Good lord, this thing sounds GORGEOUS. I don't think I've ever heard ANY vocoder, software or hardware, sound as clear as this one does. I would KILL to get articulation THAT nice out of any of the vocoders I have.
The vocoder was invented to be a cryptographic device for encoding human speech. The way you 'scramble' the channels becomes the private key that you share with someone on the other end of the encoded audio signal, and then they can 'descramble' the channels to hear something approximating human speech. Musical vocoders don't have this, so it's really interesting to me that Moog have made a Real Deal vocoder.
The Vocoder was not developed by Moog, but by the retired German physicist Harald Bode in 1977 at the age of 68. The Moog Vocoder is only a licence replica.
This seems more like it’s geared towards the MOOG addicts/synth collectors, kinda how Sweetwater sells the JHS 40 watt 1x12 “clean” tube amp, pretty much made for pedal addicts , for 2600 bucks. Gear becomes insanely addicting if you get deep into it. I’ve been to a place that’s tucked away in NJ, an unmarked building, that once you enter sells every type of synth you could imagine. They had a massive space just filled with coveted Moog Euroracks, some early ones, with SOLD tags that were 40,000, Junos, Jupiters, things like that. Moogs have never been cheap to begin with. Some smaller ones like the sub phatty or mooger fooger were under 1000, and now there’s the grandmother at 999.00, the mother 32 at 650, DFAM for 650, matriarch for 2000, but I can easily see someone who is part of the niche synth/Moog collectors drop 5k on this the same way a guitar collector would drop 20k on a ‘62 Strat. It wouldn’t be practical in a studio nowadays. There are so few fully analog studios, and all of this and more can be fully emulated with software patches on a good D.A.W. Program. It’s for collectors. It’s so cool, but seriously, run all your guitar pedals through your vocals. I run vocals through vibrato, trailing reverb, trem, it’s fun and won’t cost you 5k.
Great demo but the big surprise everyone was anxiously waiting for: 5000$!!! There must be a way to make those affordable, even if they're less "high end" versions. You'd sell a bunch at around 1000$
Cmon guys. This box is full of stuff. 16 vcas? 16 filters. Every behringer synth for 399 has one filter, one vca and the same cem chip vor oscs. So take that times 16 divided by 3 (less knobs and such) and you will land roughly at 2500 or so. And it will be made in China and not the US by a workers owned company. 5000 is an amazing price.
That hiss idea is awesome. Now i'm thinking of how to parallel the mic signal through an EQ to just slide in some of the hi-freq speech definition. My vocoder definitely blurs out the words quite a lot.

And damn.. cross patching all those patch points could make a massive mess of crazy sounds. Bad ass review. I’m not a vocoder dude but I really enjoyed watching and listening to this
@@petedako of the Emerson? Yeah I think you're right there that thing is probably mostly a rich collector type commodity. But in regard to something like the model 15 or 32, while it's clearly a big investment, I can see why a bigger studio would by something like that.
The Spectravox from last year's Moogfest is almost as much fun but only 10 bands. Still the Spectravox has voltage control of the carrier filter frequencies so it can do some other tricks. : )

I’ve never seen anyone so amped by a piece of kit (except when my buddy got a music easel) Ok I checked the SW webpage for price.. @Boofsquad I have enough experience with electronics to know that most analog synth architecture really hasn't evolved much in 40 years and the parts and manufacturing costs and processes compared to back then are much cheaper and efficient even with only a 50 person team. Look at various DIY vocoder projects and the parts cost of those and then look at this and tell me what exactly is justified in the price tag other than slapping the Moog logo on it? What R&D do you think went into a nearly 50 year old design? Also your "American based" company has all their PCB boards printed and assembled in china further expediting the cost.

The user manual for the Bode 7702 (on which the original Moog 7702 was based) includes a schematic diagram - band 1 is a 4th order low pass filter based on 2 stages of Sallen-Key topology, while bands 2 to 16 are 2-stage band pass filters based on multiple feedback topology.

Great vocoder, and I was initially excited. I just couldn't fathom using a vocoder that much to justify the $5k price tag.....and I spend a small fortune on gear, owning some of the more expensive synths out there such as a Baloran the River and a Modal 002. I guess I'll have to stick to my lowly VC340. :(
At first, I was upset because I have wanted a Vocoder for a while... and finally bought a used Novation Supernova and THEN Moog come out with this sexy monster! Then... I heard the price and realized I shouldn't be upset because this has nothing to do with me lol

Hi Sabina Studio. Whenever the Vocoder is engaged, you're only hearing the Matriarch as filtered by the Vocoder; and the filtering is directed by the spectral shape of my voice. But you're not hearing my voice, only what it's making the Vocoder do to the Matriarch. Thanks for watching!
Hi! I own a matriarch and I'm curious as to how you are doing this chain thing. You are using the matriarch oscillators (im guessing from the simple line out of the matriarch?) but then after processing the oscillator through the vocoder, how do you find a way of feeding the vocoded signal into the delay but not make it go through the vocoder again? Hope you understand what I'm asking. thanks, //isak

No software vocoder can or will sound this smooth- real electricity vs. organizing 0's and 1's. It's not a matter of CPU power, it's just physics. It's shame all the great ones are so rare (except the SVC-350)
I think something about the VCA's being so dynamic and smooth in the analog realm. Plus, when you zoom in on a sine wave in the computer, it's still a series of stair-steps. I've never been able to get good warm punchy clear bass out of VST vocoders, and they are somewhat brittle sounding too
Humble suggestion: Demos featuring younger artists who use the gear in a more contemporary way rather than the way they and things like them have been used in the past. IN ADDITION to the very informative Daniel Fisher demos!
Heathcliff a more contemporary way, not that it’s necessarily used that way now. No ones done it until someone does it. To some it up neatly, supplement the renditions with some imagination. Use a vocoder in a contemporary way regardless if it’s been done before. Preferably you’ll come up with something that hasn’t. I’m new to the synth community and I’ve noticed over the last year that a huge part of its marketing is nostalgia and recreating old sounds. Idk if you guys know it or not but you’re sitting on the most expressive sound technology on earth. Go forward instead of backwards and watch heavens gates open.

the VC340 is really good though. You can go from quite calm to batshit mental without splashing out that much money.
For the price I think I'll stick with my Waves Ovox. Very cool though.

They dont really use vocoders in contemporary music, it almost always auto-tune.

Use a vocoder in a contemporary way regardless if it’s been done before. Preferably you’ll come up with something that hasn’t. I’m new to the synth community and I’ve noticed over the last year that a huge part of its marketing is nostalgia and recreating old sounds. Idk if you guys know it or not but you’re sitting on the most expressive sound technology on earth. Go forward instead of backwards and watch heavens gates open.
