All of these are well known classics to passionate N64 fans and hardcore 90's retro gamers.
But how much of a footprint did they leave outside our communities?
This list wasn't made for us. Think of any system's library you've been unfamiliar with, and what you'd have missed out on, if every list of forgotten classics assumed you were already in the know?
Also, the year of the article was the same year Rare Replay was released. Sometimes, as a content creator, you're just a victim of bad timing.

Beetle Adventure Racing might be forgotten by younger gamers, but those that were around when the N64 was relevant know it was a banger of a racing game. Wish someone got the Volkswagen license back and made a sequel. Anyway the game that is probably the most underrated and underappreciated here is Ogre Battle 64, it was a tactical RPG on a console that wasn't known for RPG's that I would hold up there with the best of the best PS1 RPG's of the time.

I think one of the most forgotten games on the N64 was Stunt Racer 64. Sure people like us, die hard fans of the platform, will know all about it but for most other people the game never existed, mostly due to it's Blockbuster exclusivity. I myself only learnt about the game in the mid 2000s reading a forum thread in one of these dark corners of the internet back in the day, and I only ever had a chance to play it through emulation.

I got my first PC in the second half of the 90s. It was a Pentium II 233 Mhz.
So I never really played any PC ports on the N64 or vice-versa, since I had both systems. And as a kid/teenager you really have to focus where you put your money. hah
Goemon is a great entry on this list tbh, because while it did have kind of a cult following, I think a lot of people just didn't give it a chance since it was "very Japanese". Goemon was one of my most rented games ever, it was lovely.
No clue what Blast Corps does on this list, it's not forgotten at all.

To be fair with people who are less experienced with a console's lineup, especially younger players, it's pretty common for them to think that only the absolutely most well known games are the only ones that are worth playing on that console, I have not heard few times that the N64 only has the Nintendo and Rare games and nothing else, or seen people who are only familiar with the Sonic games when thinking on the Sega Genesis.

Silicon Valley is typically one of those lost gems that is based around a concept that can easily spawn a couple of games and be interesting nowadays. Just like Blast Corps it's got that quirky kind of creativity that was a product of it's time which u rarely see today. I'd say a more forgotten classic is the second goemon game, which i absolutely loved as well, again a perfect soundtrack but u had to like the 2.5D gameplay though.

That list is admittedly a tad unimaginative and obvious. I think that Mystical Ninja (it didn't sell particularly well in the UK with that £60 price tag!, true, but it simply has too much crossover goodwill and too many cult fans on the N64 for this sort of list) and/or Silicon Valley could have easily been replaced by stuff like Bomberman 64, Glover and Mischief Makers, for instance.
And I can't deny that Blast Corps is the oddest choice of them all: it has been re-issued on that Rare compilation for the Xbox, it was a first-party title (thus it seems no less obscure than, say, Snowboard Kids!) and it was one of the cheaper early N64 titles at £40, so it really isn't one of the rarer (pun not intended!) games on the second-hand market, whether in 1999 or 2022. Tetrisphere would have a MUCH better choice if they were looking for an early game at the £40 price level that didn't get a ton of attention.
But, still, I don't think that this is such a bad list. It's not on a N64-dedicated website, so this is clearly aimed at gamers that really like to game but perhaps didn't own the console at the time or have only played it on a more casual basis with friends and family, which makes it a more reasonable list under those circumstances. I certainly think that there's room online for a very basic entry-level list like this one on PCGamer AND one that's more aimed at keener N64 gamers on something like Eurogamer or IGN.
Beetle Adventure Racing doesn't seem too out of place, for instance, as it just comes across as a game that has a more passive cult fandom that some of the other hidden gems for the N64 and there aren't that many third-party exclusive racers on the console (I mean: Re-Volt, Micro Machines, Roadsters, Hydro Thunder, Hot Wheels etc were all multi-platform).
And BAR never seemed like a game that was very widely distributed in the UK as, unlike Mystical Ninja and Body Harvest et al, I can't remember ever seeing many, if any, second-hand copies of BAR on market stalls and independent gaming stores. Stuff like Mario Party and Castlevania 64 et al seemed a lot more common in the likes of Game and Electronic Boutique, too, so BAR genuinely came across as a very marginal and niche game (in terms of commercial appeal and success!) to me in 1999, despite all of the positive reviews that I read in magazines etc!
I could say the same about Top Gear Overdrive and the Rush series, both of which were just as elusive as BAR in my area, so I might have been REALLY bad at finding those sort of games as a 12-year-old and I'll happily be corrected when there are others who have more knowledge and/or better memories than me.
It's also clear that the writer went for safe and objective options, which rules out some of the more controversial yet perfectly viable candidates like Buck Bumble, Chameleon Twist, Cruis'n USA and Wetrix that might have more subjective and limited appeal. And it could be argued that some of the more credible hidden games (I'm thinking of stuff like Virtual Pool 64, NBA Courtside, Fighters Destiny, Extreme-G etc) are a tad generic for this sort of list, so I totally get those sort of omissions, too.

I've never been keen on the terms "Hidden Gem", "Obscure", or "Forgotten" used for video games, because much of it largely depends between groups of people and everything usually falls its own niche now. It can be somewhat irritating when people seem to place more value on things only or specifically because it's something that others don't know about, and then those same people get mad when that "obscure" game becomes popular and isn't considered obscure anymore.
That being said, I appreciate all the work you do on these videos to help raise awareness of some great games for others to find. The N64 really does have more to offer than some realize.

One of the reasons Body Harvest wasn't a success is that it's a butt ugly game with terrible art direction. It really is ugly, which probably turned a lot of people off.
But after playing it to death i can really say i wouldn't want it any other way. It's weird looks add to the 50's alien movie vibe and the overall uglyness add to the depressing atmosphere which is elevated even more by the AMAZING music.
Or maybe it's the nostalgia talking, i don't know.

This whole list reaks of someone having googled "n64 hidden gems" and then cobbling together an article based on Wikipedia articles.

I'm not a fan of the combative tone you've taken in this episode, Glenn. Benj is a respected writer and regular contributor to Retronauts. I'm surprised you're not familiar with his work, and I'm shocked you think it's okay to refer to him as "Benji" throughout the video. You know how hard this stuff is to get right. Please consider taking a different approach the next time you decide to review another content creator's work. You're better than this.
