Hey,I watched this youtube video of this guy testing the NIKON AF-S 18-55 kit lens against the Nikon AF-P 18-55 kit lens and as he was using the video mode with the AF-S lens, you could really hear terrible clicking noises as he was zooming in and out and the AF-S was also considerably slower....I have the Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm 1: f/4.5 - 6.3 ED but the none VR version and was considering buying the same one as in your video with the VR but was afraid it might be noisier while zooming in and out in video mode. so my question is how do the two compare in terms of zooming noise and autofocus speed
I was actually pretty hard on the AF-P pulse motor in my review of the AF-P 18-55mm that has the same stepping motor sytem (pulse motor) as the AF-P 70-300. I'll post the link to that review; after 4:15 I show the AF noise: ruclips.net/video/03HnE9WTEGA/видео.html I have sensitive ears and was thinking "virtually silent" would mean I can't hear anything; but I can pick up high pitched electronic noise (like old tv sets). Overall, the pulse motor is quiet enough to make the camera mic unable to pick up the AF. I realized what they meant by virtually silent once I started looking at all the AF-S lenses; they are LOUD like you said. In one of my AF-S reviews I call the clicking like recording next to "train tracks" hah! The Silent Wave Motor system is so loud that it's unusable in my mind for video unless I'm using external audio, and it has to be off the body of the camera. IMO the Pulse Motor AF-P autofocus noise solves that dysfunction in the "silent wave motor" system. But check out my 18-55mm AF-P review to hear it for yourself.
Drive By Reviews yes but i was talking about the Af-p 70-300 DX vs the AF-P DX 70 -300 VR!! how do these two compare ? i have the none vr version and wanted to upgrade to the vr version of the AF-p DX 70-300 but was worried the VR version might have more noise when video zooming compare to the none VR lens I have..can you help with opinion on that?
Haven't tried the non-VR lens myself so I'm not sure how it compares (however it is the same pulse motor). I will say that non-VR vs. VR on the AF-S models made little difference, as they were all quite loud due to their Silent Wave Motor. The lens in this review, the VR model, is quiet enough that the mic on the D7500 body didn't pick up any AF noise. So if your camera isn't going to pick up any noise from the AF/VR, isn't that the answer you're looking for? Btw, did you check out the pulse motor and VR in the kit lens video I posted above? Turn your speakers up and see if you can hear through my a6000 mic and that will be pretty accurate to what you'll hear from your own camera body.
so what you are saying is basically both AF-p lenses, the vr and the none vr one are supposed to be just as silent while zooming? since they use the same type motor?no chance the vr motor could be adding a little extra noise vs the none vr af-p version? i did watch your video but couldn't hear anything special, also i don't have a d7500 ,i have a d5500
This is exactly the review I needed. I was first not very sure if the portraits would turn out well due to f/4.5-6.3, but your pictures proved me otherwise, and I can have that nice smooth bokeh with this lens. I'll definitely buy it next month. Thank you so much for this review, mate. Cheers!

Ciao a tutti da Roma, thank you for your nice review! I have two questions : is it compatible with the Nikon d3400? has it an internal auto focus motor?
This is an old comment, but yes, it's compatible with the D3300 and newer, the D5200 and newer, and the D7100 and newer. All AF-S and AF-P Nikon lenses have internal autofocus motors. HEADS UP! I found this 70-300mm lens was NO better than the Nikon Coolpix L340 with 28x focus! Even with a 2x Kenko converter lens, it had insufficient reach. In other words, it's reach was way LESS than the Coolpix L340 with 28x focus. A huge disappointment!
it compactinle only with new model camera which has d setting of vr ...so make sure before ur going to purchase..it doesn't wrk even autofocus in my Nikon d7000...
The video was shot in Multiple point focus and hence the lens could'nt focus on the point needed. Switch to single point focus and the story is different.
I used various AF settings throughout, the bridge bar shot was single point with the AF directly on the bar at 3:50, generally I couldn't get it to do what I wanted (in video) unless I was in the smaller AF area. The B roll footage was almost 100% not multi point as most of that footage was hunting continuously.
@@DriveByReviews but I have the same lens with my D5300 has quick autofocus on Single point focus, whereas in Multi- point focus it struggles as in the video
@@aravindm4440 that's great! All I can say is with the D7500 this was the results, and I attribute the AF issues to the camera body. In photography it was fast and accurate no matter the AF mode, but in video it struggled in every AF mode. Nikon is far more concerned with their photography focus anyways, so it doesn't surprise me.
Nobody really shoots video with Nikon cameras. And if you are doing it with a telephoto you need some kind of a stabilization rig. Not knocking the review just giving pointers to those who maybe don't know.

The limitation is in the body not the lens though. The AF-P lenses worked best out of all the nikkor lenses I tested when it came to AF.
lens good for portrait and Wedding hall ???
Nice review 👌👌
Does it work with nikon 5300
I have just purchased the lens for my D5300 and yes it seems to work beautifully.
David Shaw Awesome! Thank you for answering sir.. I will get this soon. ☺
Yup, but you have to upgrade firmware 1st.
I'm using this on a d3200 and it won't auto focus can you help a brother out
The D3200 is on the list of "incompatible models" per Nikon, so all the functions of this AF-P lens wont work on it.
Drive By Reviews Is it compatible with Nikon D5300?
Brit2017 Yes it is
Vhnnxy y What about in D750?
Brit2017 Yes but there will be vignetting. This is a DX lens not an FX lens.
Is the lens good for astrophotography?
Christian Fink probably not. It’ has too much zoom to start. I’d suggest the 18-55 for Astro.
hey m from India
nice video loved it ..
i also want to know about 55-300 lens .
if u have that video please do send me the link .
work for d7200 ???
Anirban Sarkar yup, i use it on mine
@@CapturedByKen Does it work without any issues, as smooth as it works on the D7500.
Or is there a firmware update to make it work?
I'm planning to buy this one.
@@ravinschannel no issues at all with the D7200 , not great for low light though (I'm eventually upgrading to the 70-200 2.8)
does it support D5000
Yes , it support
No
Nice vid!
Muito legal, vou adquirir uma lente desta, hoje tenho uma d5300 com a lente do kit
Bahia em Focos - Noticias e Entretenimentos: yes it works on the D5300. You do need to upgrade the firmware.
Work for d40
HEADS UP! I found this 70-300mm lens was NO better than the Nikon Coolpix L340 with 28x focus! Even with a 2x Kenko converter lens, it had insufficient reach. In other words, it's reach was way LESS than the Coolpix L340 with 28x focus. A huge disappointment!
I'm beginning to think a DSLR camera is way overrated from a point & shoot camera.
It doesnt have that much reach but if you use this range properly, a DSLR gives much better image quality. Just don't use teleconverters.
ordered it on flip ... hope I won't be disapointed.
Hi Mr. Bhowmick, Sanjay from Bangalore. How is the lense working.. I'm planning to buy one.
@@sanjayt5633 no issues. I have tested my copy with Nikon D5500.
This is or the classic nikon af-s 70-300 4.5-5.6G ed vr? hmm..
this is AF-P, newer version of AF-S 70-300mm, better performance
@@aruzyen4044 the AF-P is also a DX lens, not FF
I’ll stick to the 70-300VR AF/S
it compactinle only with new model camera which has d setting of vr ...so make sure before ur going to purchase..it doesn't wrk even autofocus in my Nikon d7000...
manual focus also not working
Nice! just noticed you live in oregon also! Cheers!!
That’s what she said it feels great in hand
nikon d5100 work ????
Are you sure bc it isn't letting me take photos on my d5100
@@yanky_olabode3349 I think it should be working but without auto focus
No
5:51 the sound if the wind ?!? 🤪 your kinding right? whats the point if your talking about a lens?!
Please tell me can I use this lenes with nikon D5300 camera
Yes you can. If your firmware is up to date.
Yes, you can use it on your D5300
I prefer to stick to FF telephoto lens on aps-c bodies.
Please blurr out the license plates in the video...other than that great video!
Good review
Does it support Nikon D90
Muy bueno, muchas gracas.
Thanks
Nobody really shoots video with Nikon cameras. And if you are doing it with a telephoto you need some kind of a stabilization rig. Not knocking the review just giving pointers to those who maybe don't know.
I have the lens more than 6 years, sharp, crisp, fast. But not use it longer than 200mm. it's not sharp after 200mm. Keep ISO100 and crop an image .
This lens came in 2016, you have the previous version. This is AF-P version and works only on newer cameras.
And why is your flag upside down?
Nice
Has anyone bought this lens from ebay for $150 and get the real thing ?
Odrc Trx also what I was wondering
Odrc Trx I think I’m selling mines for 165 if you haven’t received yours yet. I have D5100 and it’s not compatible :(
I bought it new in about $135 from nearby shop new.
Better 55-300mm
I have tested both. Missing the 15mm gap is no issue. 70-300 is cheaper and lighter and works on newer body, that's the difference.
Yo yo
wannahave
Huuuy que zoom tan pobre :( mejor me compro una Nikon P900
👌👍
