    I recently got this same lens and fully agree - I couldn't be happier. Using it mainly to photograph birds with a D3300. Caught some amazing photos with super-quick autofocus, and everything is beautifully sharp.

    I’ve got the same lens, and I used it for wildlife on both my D5300 & later on my D500. As long as there’s enough light, it’s an amazing little lens. Some of my best photos of Sandhill Sandhill cranes, Canadian Geese, and moose & Caribou in Denali National Park were taken with that same lens.

    I got this lens along with a 18-55 included as kit lenses for my d3500. It works well for me for bird photography and other scenarios where I need some reach or where I want that background compression look. It's also very good for photographing bigger flowers. I did a nice panorama stitch of a cityscape shot with about 10-12 frames using this lens at 80mm focal length. The result is an amazingly sharp and detailed pano that's around 100 mega pixels resolution. This lens along with the f1.8 35mm dx lens is one of the better value lenses for dx cameras.

      I got the D3500 with the AF-P 18-55 & 70-300 as well. The 70-300 is excellent but kind of bulky and at 70mm it's already too zoomed-in so I have to swap lenses often. I replaced the 18-55 with the 35 f1.8 which is amazing. Thinking to replace the 70-300 with the 55-200 which is more useable range for me.

Is there a way round this ? - would def lose some shots in my humble experience

      Difficult decision, as these are two very different lenes. It all depends on what you're photographing. The 70-300 is very versatile and quite light. The 300mm f4 will be sharper than the 70-300, but heavier and you're stuck at 300mm. I did get this lens a couple of months ago and took a lot of great photos with it in on a D3300 at a large music festival in the north of England in August. The performance wide open is really good, sharp and contrasty, the VR is excellent, the AF is quick and reliable. But now I'm considering maybe selling it and buying one of the newer 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lenses to replace it with to be able to use the D3300 as a one-lens-do-all travel camera. According to DXOMark the 18-300mm (the newer one, not the f/3.5-5.6) should be just about as good as the AF-P DX 70-300mm, but I can't find any independent info/confirmation on this, except for heresay how it's great or crap, no consensus, so I don't know what to do and I don't have money to burn. Going on a trip soon and would like to either sell the 70-300 and get the 18-300, or just keep the 70-300 and get an 18-140 for travel (which I know is good for what it is). If anyone has experience with these lenses and could advise I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  Год назад +1

      There is always going to be a compromise when you buy a lens with a focal length from 18-300. it's either going to be soft at 18 or at 300mm. This is why most people like the 70-300 lens

    • @zetacrucis681
      @zetacrucis681 Год назад

      @@CharlesNPhotography Thank you Charles, that was my hunch as well but it's good to have confirmation by someone with a lot more experience. The 70-300 AF-P is too good to let go. I was using a D600 with a 24-120mm f/4 alongside the D3300 with the 70-300, so I have a tremendous range there, but it means carrying two cameras and a fair bit of weight. That's fine for dedicated photography outings, but for holiday snaps it's out of the question. I think I'll heed your advice on the 18-140mm (from your "Perfect Travel Lens" video) and get one of them to pair with the D3300 for a portable but still very versatile combo. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and enthusiasm!

    Do you think this lens with a D7200 would be a good starter camera for wildlife?

      Yes it would be Matthew, I've found that it focuses very quickly and the images are very sharp.

    Would the FX version work as well on a crop sensor model like D5600? There seem to be more second hand FX versions of this lens, than DX and they're pretty much the same price.

    Hi does this DX lens five you the same crop factor than the 70-300 FX, which become a 105-450 on a DX body, or does this DX lens, being DX, render 70-300 on DX body ?
    Thank you for any insight...

      @@CharlesNPhotography It makes sens, on my Canon I mainly have full frame lenses on my both FF and APS-C system, so I was kind of blurry with it when I asked... Thank you though.
      I wish I could find a comparative of photos taken both with the DX and FX version at different similar equivalent apertures on a DX body, for I really wonder, if there is an IQ loss between the 2 (sharpness, color and micro-contrast), because yes, the FX has all the advantages, crop factor additional reach, on lens VR access, 9 aperture blades vs 7 so much better for star effect rendering on night lights, weather seal and more I'm forgetting at the moment, but the DXs, if good, are cuties with their tinier size, yet I can fiddle with all missing FX assets but not the IQ.
      Wish they'd really push the enveloppe on their DX lens line up and give us awesome glass options there too.
      You lose the crop enhancing with a DX lens but there is something undeniably pleasant to have a lens just tailored for an existing system. One just wants them as good as their big brothers offering...
      Otherwise, aside of this lens (I'm trying to get a few for a used D500 I got almost bare a few weeks ago), would you say the 105 Nikon micro lens would be one of the best choices for it?
      I know I prefer the reach of my full frame 100mm Canon macro lens with my Canon APS-C over what I get with my Canon full frame so I kind of like the longer reach, but maybe you might think of better option...
      Thank you for all your prior insights.

      @@CharlesNPhotography Wait, wait, Charles...
      I abided little fast in my prior reply... It looks like doesn't work like that.
      I recently got a D500 (DX format) and the 17-55mm f/2.8 DX lens for it, and the lens does indeed translate to a 25.5 to 82.50mm in 35mm format, for DX the lens is.
      So... are you sure you're right? Like you, at some point I thought that too (and it would make sens) but it looks like that's not what they do.
      If I take my Nikon DX 17-55mm f/2.8 lens as an example, then the DX 70-300mm should also become a 105-450mm in 35mm equivalent, no?
      I know one could think that, since it's a DX lens, the given focal length reading on it would be a 35mm equivalent to simplify, but apparently not, and one still have to convert for crop, just like with an FX lens...

      If you own the Nikon D5000, this lens is not compatible with it.
      The D5000 is not compatible with AF-P type lenses as they use a new electromagnetic focusing system that the D5000 cannot communicate with
