Great video with good explanation as to what you are doing and why. Also congratulations on your recent agriculture award. You are doing a good job of it. Lovely farm too.

First off....Hilarious to see Davy having some fun @ 22:48 🤣 Always good day at work when you can enjoy the work without all the hustle and bustle and stress that comes with moving animals around! I do believe your Farm's Motto should be "It Works For Us"! I completely understand that some Fans really are sincere in asking "Why do you do such and such"...and then there are a "few" who love to analyze how you all go about a job while they sit on their couch in the suburbs munching on potato chips telling you it's wrong. Bollocks To Them! Our temps here in Ohio have been very warm first part of Nov, but that is already changing this week! Great video Nicola and thank you for my seat! I wean the calves of my cows and sell them straight to market. Cows always go back to where they last saw their calves and will shout for a couple days. The calves will weigh about 220kg to 250kg. Ready for the next farmer to fatten them up. I don't do any arable crops so would have to buy in all the feed if I wintered the calves. Your system seems to work well for you!

    A few questions please
*Are all the cattle naturally polled?
*Do you castrate the bull calves and if so at what age?
*If very young cows (eg Heifers or second or third calvers fail to get in calf) do you dispatch them off the farm straightaway or allow them a second chance (once) to get in calf by sliding back to the other group of cows?
*Assuming your herds have reached your target numbers do you plan to breed and select for any replacement females?
Many thanks for your videos (I have not been subscribed for very long) but I find the livestock side of the business most interesting and informative.

      Welcome, thanks for following along.
Of course, so calves are dehorned & castrated at around 3 weeks of age. I am working on how to share this on socials without it being portrayed in a negative way to people who maybe don’t understand the reasoning behind it.
We have a strict culling policy, if she’s not in calf she goes. We used to allow swapping between herds as we do spring and autumn calving but with new regulations of calving intervals this isn’t possible and the price of cull cows now, we don’t carry passengers.
No plans currently to breed replacements.
      Hope that helps 😊

You’ve bred them , weaned them, fed them and watered them and they have had a good life so I know when I eat 🥩 and I do I know I’m getting quality
But we must pay for quality
I always buy British beef - Hawksmoor stocked by Ocado
    Lamb from Staffordshire
    Pork from Staffordshire
I’m disgusted still at what the Government at the IHT changed from April next year

It makes me sad to see the abandoned cottage. Our family left Scotland in the 1840's due to the clearances.

Thanks for your comment, it’s what works for us.
As I’ve explained, we use the shed for other purposes prior to weaning also.
Can I ask why you feel they should be weaned earlier?
