"Brass knuckles" are banned in many countries, and apparently they have even scared lawmakers in many American states...
    worldpopulationreview.com/sta...
Obviously the main reason they are regarded with suspicion is their association with gangsters and thugs. But how dangerous are they really as a weapon, or how useful are they as self-defense tools? Some people view them as gimmicky and useless. But is the problem simply that they are not shaped right? Let's talk about it!
This is just for entertainment purposes, I do not condone violence. Be sure to check your local laws.

I took a couple of metres out of the bottom of the tree and the rest of it stayed up there, waiting for someone to go where it could fall on them. I had to use another dead tree as a lever to pry that dead tree out of the branches of the living tree that had caught it.
It's not so bad when the tree's small enough to get your hands round, but there's a fallen willow that's stuck its branches into the ground and resumed growing right across the path and it must have a 125 cm girth four metres above the path and I just don't fancy trying to deal with that one at all.

Most of the traditional knuckle duster designs are uncomfortable because they're tiny flea market crap. I think it's a cost reduction thing. Designs like those found during WWI and with late 19th to early 20th century police are way better. I've got several pairs of knucks from East Coast Knuckles. People that down play the effectiveness forget that most materials are much harder than your hand. Not too mention all the force is concentrated into a much smaller surface area. Now you've got me thinking about making a D shaped duster out of hickory.

    • @eisensturm2199
      @eisensturm2199 6 месяцев назад +37

I was about to post something very similar. One of the chief advantages of the "classic" design that he shows here is that when made of actual metal the studs/spikes concentrate a lot of force. Given that it's metal and metal is hard ... that is not a good day for you. One thing that is very well demonstrated is that the design allows you to do "jabs" (relatively light punches) that do a lot of damage relative to effort. Which is one of the big reasons trench knives became a thing. Punch and stab in one compact package!

I’ve found that the traditional brass ones work better when hitting a target with a knocking motion as opposed to a jab or punch. It’s not the best way to hit, but it is intuitive for an untrained or panicked person. Basically align the second knuckles in the center of the finger holes and the palm rest on the base of the thumb, then take a wide swing like knocking on a door. I think that the untrained or panicked person is actually the intended use case, as these were (if I’m not mistaken) were issued to troops in WWI as a last resort trench fighting weapon. Not meant as lethal per-se, but meant to give an edge in a pinch

    • @user-cl2tc5kd8k
      @user-cl2tc5kd8k Месяц назад +1

But this is exactly how brass knuckles are meant to be used. It should be placed against the middle knuckles of the fingers, rather than pushing the fingers all the way through. And the blows are delivered as you described, like a cat paw or a knock on the door, as well as hooks,or using a hammer fist strikes or the butt from the side of index finger. There is enough information about this, articles and videos explaining how to use it correctly, but people continue to make fun of this weapon.

With traditional design brass knuckles the force of the punch is concentrated into a much smaller area than with the one that he is using, so the actual impact onto the bad guys jaw will be much more damaging with them. I was taught to place them on the first knuckle, place the rear into ur palm and try to push it into the sky. Then to prevent finger breakage, your fist is now used as a pick with wide and arching swings. Jabs and straights could turn the tool preventing you from maintaining your grip. I was told early boxers designed this way of use so they could fight outside the ring without injuring their hands. Old people stories.

There used to be a weapon sold, that doubled up as an ice scraper for windscreens. It had a similar design to the duster in the video, but with a plastic blade.
With a few cosmetic changes, the duster in the video could double up as a handle to help you carry multiple plastic bags full of shopping, in comfort......Perhaps a couple of metal hooks screwed in the front, to hang the bags on.....Which would also cause damage if you 'accidentally' hit someone 😊

Hell the hole is already the shape of a protractor
Jesus this is genius man, I wonder if these would sell .... with a bit more complications you could have a plumb (or force multiplier in a pinch) and level.

Any weapon that has a high risk of breaking the hand (and disabling it) won’t be able to be used more than once or twice. Thus, the person using it had better hope they can get an ideal hit in before their hand becomes ineffective.

Effectively a bit like a broad pyramid. It doesn't have to be particularly long (like a real katar) but even if it came to a point 1 or 2" from the leading edge of your hand, it would create a pressure point that would be extremely painful with a very light punch.

I think the "classic" duster design came from the 1918 US army trench knife.
They were trying all kinds of things in the trench raids, where fighting frequently went extremely close. The idea was to protect the knife-hand and make for a more secure grip when you were covered with slippery blood and mud.
The purpose-built dusters bulked up the rods between fingers, to stand up to the strain of being used to actually punch hard, thus making the things uncomfortable.
Some sources claim the best trench weapon was actually the small shovels they were issued... clubs of various sorts were also popular. The pump-action shotgun was the only weapon so effective the enemy made a formal protest about it, though.

  • @Dmobley9901

I find it interesting how the design we're talking about here is effectively just a handle, not too different from some door or gate handles, ideally with a wedge on the opposite side so it effectively acts as a tool for...let's just say "picking" at solid and squishy materials.
I could definitely see that design with a wedge/taper to it effectively making cuts in a lot of different materials, and it would make fracturing a lot easier.
It's interesting because it wouldn't necessarily be a "stabbing" weapon but more akin to something serrated, meant to cause more lacerations, with the added bonus of focusing pressure on bone.

FWIW, the way I was taught about knuckle dusters is that you have to punch differently with them. You don't put your fingers all the way in, but you want your 2nd knuckles to be even with the holes. You use the duster for the structure against your palm to transmit the force through the knucks, so your hand shouldn't be taking much shock anywhere but the fleshy heel. The closed, tight fist that you would use for normal punching isn't the way to go, instead pretend you are doing a kung fu movie throat strike or something.

Brass knuckles are a ridiculously effective self defence weapon. One shot situation enders. Problem is that there are so many shit ones on the market and people also don’t know to either size them properly or use them properly. As well as a massive force enhancer and force concentrator, a proper pair gives protection with the force of the blow bypassing the metacarpal bones in the hand straight to the forearm.

I’ve heard it said that the duster’s are not really for punching head on, but raking the spikes across the face.

    • @Taolan8472
      @Taolan8472 6 месяцев назад +1

That may be true for spiked knuckles, but is not true generally of knuckle dusters.
A proper made-for-purpose metal knuckle duster has a comparatively wide handle and a tapered front bar almost like a blade but without an edge. It is designed to concentrate the force of your punch down as small as possible while retaining rigidity. The odd shapes of the handle end are to add weight to add force. The metal being harder than bone means you are more likely to break their bones than yours when you punch them.

So Skall there's this cooking tool called bear claws aka bbq claws aka meat claws which are basically just a handle with knives attached to them. For some reason owning and carrying around a pair of those is perfectly legal. Those things can easily shred though large game so they would easily tear through a human.

It's pretty sad actually. Back in the good old days, very artistic knuckle dusters could be found that almost could be considered as jewelry even if they could bust your face up. Of course then you had the more eccentric ones that would have a knife and or short pistol attached to it.

I ordered a sword from them almost 3 years ago and they never delivered. Constant lying about when it will be done and eventually 0 updates. Now when pressed for a refund they’re not responding. I’m not emailing a pr guy mind you, It’s been contact with the owner! 3 Years, no sight of the sword or my 800$.

If im not mistaken, the original knuckle dusters were the stirrups (the place where you put your foot when riding a horse), and they were very much like the wooden one he showed here! But with metal and stuff, of course. Usually had a bigger loop, so you got a few extra centimeters too!

Over here in germany, knuckle dusters are also banned.
But you can buy astonishingly big and padded carbine hooks.
also, blades of 10cm or longer are banned. technically, you
are not allowed to buy a bread knife and bring it home with you
from the shop where you got it, because you are, in most likely
cases, carrying a way too long and pointed blade in a hidden
    case . .
And yes, our popo does actually pay attention to this, as i had
the misfortune of finding out, when i bought my naginata and
took it home from the shop in my hands.

This reminds me of 30 years ago, when in elementary school a schoolmate of mine made a cast for knuckle duster and then we scavanged enough lead to melt it and pour it, cast gave up at the third pouring. They were crude, but they were something we made ourselves. There were no laws regulating them back then, but there was no one selling them around here. Not that we needed them, it was just something cool we wanted. Mine was later sacrificed when I needed to make weights for the tractor wheels.

Been carrying around a black oversized carabiner style clip used for hanging keys. It’s made out of solid metal (not hollow) and it wraps perfectly around my right fist. Wrapped some textured grip tape around it and it’s surprisingly effective at punching and protecting my hand. I’ve punched chunks of wood out of dead trees without issue. It’s also just a carabiner, meaning I have carried it on a backpack into interesting places after being frisked by security all over the city of Chicago. Never been asked about it once. Been doing it for 4 years now.

Great video. I would love it if you could do a video on Blackjacks, and Saps. It would make a great complement to this video, I think. Covers the 3 basic Modern North American impact weapons. I suppose, if you add in flashlights and batons, you could call it five NA impact weapons.

I once saw a man make a purse with a handle like that, yet it had sharp edges at the top and bottom of your hand. the purse was REALLY small and light and the handle was twice as big, so he didnt say this but it was obvious that you could wrap the fabric around the "grip" and be holding not only a punching weapon but you can do downward or inward strikes that would pernitrate. I kinda got the idea that he was unaware of his design though, it was TV show and he got "kicked off" I will never forget it though because it was one of the most subtle weapons I have ever seen.

I’d recommend having a long hole cut on the end you punch with to wrap leather or some form of cushion between where you put your hand and the side that would hit the knuckles to make a bit of a snug fit in order to allow you to (in theory) punch harder without hurting your hand by having a cushion against your knuckles/fingers

7:11 - I'd also recommend wrist wraps when doing these sorts of tests. It's very very easy to mess up your wrist punching something as unforgiving as a tree (dead or otherwise), or even a heavy bag.

The Indian Vajra-mushti is a good compromise : doesn’t separate the fingers, isnt metal, but horn, which is light but more flexible and resiliant than wood. It has been used in a blood sport for centuries, quite neat design.

I'm from MI. Our knuckleduster law was put into effect as an anti-strike /anti-protest ordinance. Too many factory owners and scabs got ambushed with them in the Great Depression, so of course, those same factory owners called their Congressmen, presumably offered an appropriate bribe (an essential part of getting laws passed in America), and had blackjacks, knuckledusters, and virtually all bludgeoning weapons added to the firearm law of '31. The original intent of the law was to ban bombs, silencers, and machine guns.
Even if they were technically legal, it still wouldn't be worth it IMO. Folding knives under 3" are legal to carry in MI. But that didn't stop me from being arrested for it, held over an entire weekend, dragged into court, and then when it became clear they couldn't actually charge me with anything, they kept my knife and all the cash I had on me.

This was a popular design in Mexico cause street thugs and hooligans used metal saddle stirrups strewn aplenty by the revolution.
And yeah the idea was to hold the thicker foot rest and hit with the much slimmer joint that often had protuberances or sharp corners.

It's always cool to see your branch out and talk about different kinds of weapons and give your perspectives on them. I totally agree about the standard form of Knuckles being very uncomfortable. I would probably prefer something closer to your design.
