Wow ! All my favourite artists over the years and who I listen to now . What history thanks for taking us there and sorry your pain mess making you a bit sad hope your feeling better soon and you managed to get a lift to the BBQ . But you have Jah to cheer you up .
Jordan, it’s so nice to see a young person interested in Hollywood history and all it encompasses. I grew up in L.A. and spent a lot of my teenage years hanging out in Hollywood stargazing. Two more people who recorded at Gold Star are:Darlene Love - the great back up singer and solo artist in her own right.Tina Turner - recorded “River Deep, Mountain High” there and Phil Spector banned Ike Turner from being present. Keep on vloging, I’m a fan!
I'm 30, and if not for the wreaking crew, Phil Spector and Brian Wilson Id be stuck in some corporate job. Instead I worked with my dad who is a musician and built a studio in our home. Totally analog, with a 16 track reel to reel Tascam, In an 11 ft by 18 ft room the previous owners had paneled wall to wall with redwood. We took down.one wall to expose the brick for a better sound. In the root cellar is an empty 14 ft propane tank with two speakers and two mics for reverb. Took us 8 years but its now the only place with real analog sound, and I don't charge a lot for session time. You can't beat the warmth of analog.
Great vlog!!!! Much of the music I grew up with was recorded here, collected on 45s and heard on L.A. AM radio. I knew it was gone, but an effing strip mall? Damn!! Glad to know the board is at the R and R Hall of Fame. // Thanks for another piece that pays the subject proper respect. That respect is the common thread in all your vlogs and distinguishes your work from all the rest.
I can't believe the historical society did not save this place !! That place would be sacred ground for me . Dude , you're makin me want to visit California . I would love to travel but I don't have the money to do so :(
The Iron Butterfly was one of the opening bands for The Doors in 1967. I saw them in concert at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. That's when tickets were $5.50.
Amazing history! I'd say it's a shame but really, it's just they way things go. I do hope you had a nice day and continue to heal up so you don't need pain meds anymore.
downtonviewer David gold said that basically they just accomplished everything there they thought they could. he wanted to make sure history reflected that the fires in the building happened after they closed up, and not that that was the reason they closed
@Daze with Jordan the Lion That's good to know. I had a theory someone(maybe Phil Spector?) had it burned down so nobody could replicate the signature sound he created there. Lol I was 14 when I thought of that and was only half serious, but it seemed like something he would do.
Gold Star Recording Studio is the equivalent of Sun Studio in Memphis. The City allowing Gold Star to be torn down to build a strip mall is criminal. Apparently Charles Manson met Paul McCartney at Gold Star Recording Studio. He attended along with Brain Wilson, Kim Fowley, Mick Jagger, Sonny Bono, Terry Melcher and Phil Spector when Tina and Ike Turner were recording. Your vlogs rock, Jordan.
Such a shame how these magical space are going or gone. I had a UPS round in Leatherhead in Surrey, England. I used to deliver to a cricket bat shop with a gym above it. I didnt realise it was Surrey Sound Studios where The Police recorded a lot of their early hits!
Fantastic video man! I think me and you have the same interest when it comes to this stuff. The history behind the music and stories. Definitely subscribed!
Jordan, do you know if that is the same studio that Phil Spector fired a gun in the control room just inches from John Lennon? I remember reading about it happening, not sure if it was there or not...supposedly around 1973
When I was in college, I got really into recording. I knew a lot about Gold Star Studio, so I went to the location to see if I could visit it. I couldn't get in because it was locked up and no one answered. I did find out that next door to Gold Star was a slightly smaller studio called "American Recording Company," that had been owned by Richie Podolor. It was where John Kay and Steppenwolf, among others had done their recording. The American Recording studio had been rented by Marlin Jones, a music professor from Azusa Pacific College (now University) who had owned a small storefront studio in Glendora, CA (I went to Azusa Pacific in the 1960s). Jones wanted a bigger operation, so he rented Podolor's studio. Jones's Glendora studio was where Bill Schnee started engineering. It was too bad that I never got into Gold Star, but I'm still recording, though actually retired.
Imagine Bryan Wilson recorded Good Vibrations" there and Jimi Hendrix did his first recordings there and Sonny and Cher were there, and Bob Dylan recorded there, awesome Jordan. It's interesting to see how a place where stars made music history at is now a simple shopping center with an insurance agency in it.But the world evolves. Plus that fire helped destroy it . thanks for this
OMG...there used to be a big flag store on that corner I saw that corner goes into cycle because I frequented that surplus store in the 70's. This blew my mind as well.
Astounding that there's no marker or anything on this former Gold Star Studio site, music history happened here! Your vlogs are always interesting and full of amazing facts! Jah was probably picking up on that you weren't feeling that great and just wanted to chill himself, my little guy Willie, a terrier, is the same way if I'm under the weather.
Great job, Jordan. Especially since all you had to work with was a run down strip mall. You made Goldstar come alive, though. Too bad it's not still standing and preserved for tours, like Sun Records studio is.
Up here in Everett, Washington...I found out a few years ago that some local guy, a Boeing engineer, started recording local musical talent in a small basement room, back around 1960...The guy's house was just a half-block away from my home...He actually recorded quite a few local groups, a few of whom sold a lot of records in the NorthWest. I talked to a lady who had lived next to the dude, back in the early 1960s...She was now elderly, of course...and all she told me was that the noise factor coming from her neighbor's basement studio used to really bother her!..The nature of music itself is so transitory, it seems! I was excited to hear about this recording studio...but other neighbor of mine would just say--SO WHAT?
I know this is an old vlog ! U mentioned the song fire! What part of l a is this! We had a pyro set a fire on sept 1 st at our house! 1965! This man torched a lot of places! Was finally caught outside watching a place ablaze! Didn't go to prison instead went to a mental institution!
Phil Spector was awesome, just too bad the way his life turned out. What an amazing group of people who have recorded here! History sure has a way of changing things. Did I hear you say Winnipeg's Neil Young? Dang your videos are awesome!
How about a mention of Larry Levine? He engineered so many amazing artists there, and he was the specter’s engineer by the way. It would be nice if he got some mention. He also brought all the sound to A&M records from his 15 years experience at Goldstar. May want to mention him in any future references.
Radio Recorders would be another good one to do a vlog on - I don't think it was too far away from Gold Star - if you haven't already done that. I don't recall. Elvis among others recorded there in the 50s -- and also the Pan Pacific Theater in L.A., where Elvis famously performed live in '57.
Excellent mini-documentary. I agree it's a shame the mall wasn't named "GOLD STAR RECORDING" mall. Would draw a few 60's music die hards (like me). I mean, the Beach Boys have a memorial to their now non-existent house. Thanks for making this.
Great vlog!!! Now you need to do one on Sound City. Equally impressive with music history in my opinion. Also, I provided a link below on Falcon Liars comment in which Jerry Cole talks about what he believes is the real reason for the echo effect at Gold Star, plus the infamous Phil Spector gun firing and the Wrecking Crew recording for Charlie Manson. Have a great day!
Another echo chamber that still exists but is never seen ... the one created for the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, NM. (Petty recorded Buddy Holly, The Fireballs and other groups there). For his echo chamber, they constructed it in the building next door ... in the attic. Holley's father apparently had a tile business, so they tiled out the attic with ceramic tiles, then ran speaker and microphone cables across an outside yard and back!
Greeting and God bless y'all, here's the deal while watching the commentary to la bamba they refer to that echo chamber and they said they talk about how its been paved over but that thing is still down there. But interesting that the guy said he destroyed it, and in the picture it looms like they had to crawl in or out of the. Crazy stuff. Have a good life God bless you, peace in Jesus Christ. L8-pc
@@markg6860 sorry i mentee at gold star they where saying it was under ground still. Pretty cool if it is, just what i heard. Interesting of they took out to capital records though wouldn't mind seeing it some day. God bless.-pc
@@thefunkyfreshjustus I think a 7-11 now stands on the site of the old GoldStar studio in LA. The intrigue surrounding that echo chamber took on a life of its own ... Phil Spector's "wall of sound", etc.
Absolutely sad no recognition given to this location. Some sort of monument or a at least a large plaque should be placed in this location to recognize the importance of Gold Star Recording Studio in musical history. Shame on the city for not doing anything to acknowledge Gold Star Studio.
If my eyesight and measuring skills are correct, I'd say Goldstar was right where Starbucks is. So if you're sitting in Starbucks, you're sitting in the middle of Goldstar.....
