Denzel is a Master of his craft... He plays every role he takes with unbelievable passion and authenticity... He has a personal moral code that extends beyond his personal life and he is a role model in so many ways. One of my favorite actors without question.
I was fortunate to see him live on Broadway NY. He really is the definition of professional. I kept thinking that his movie scenes probably just needed only the first take.
@@larryousman No. These scenes involve many, many people. Even the best actor could not expect literally everyone else to do every line and scene perfectly. Let alone avoiding making even small mistakes themselves. You might want to get from between Denzel's legs for a bit.
I like The Equalizer and John Wick but what I liked alot about Denzel in this scene was he had no wasted movements. Every action/reaction was swift, fast and with a purpose. Hitting certain guys with kill shots while wanting others to suffer so he could take his time to punish them. Plus, the music made it feel even more badass.
This is one of the greatest fight scenes in movie history. I always wondered if this could be done in real life. Denzel said it took a lot of training and shoots to get this scene perfect. This is one great movie!
There is no MMA or blood sport I ever heard of where one man takes of multiple opponents and beats them. This seems like the most popular theme I see in all these type of movies. It's like a woman taking on a trained man and winning, never happens in real life.
@@safffff1000 well if someone is just trained to kill then he can take down multiple people at times. Here Denzel is trained to kill and He's a kind of mercenary and capable of killing with a blink of an eye. You can't kill so many people during a long interval, it has to be a sudden burst of killing spree where your opponents don't even get the chance to react property. Efficient, fast and ruthless.
He should had been in John Wick as a trustworthy friend. If the make the Expendable 4 he could be of great help as the Equalizer. Like show up in one scene and saved the entirely expendable from a bunch of baddies who trapped them.
My favorite part was when he repeatedly opens and closes the door. It's the perfect representation of what's happening mentally with the character. "I promised her I'd never do this again" "I'm Alina's only hope" "I promised my dead wife" "Alina needs you" "Leave" "Stay" "Leave" "Stay" *Door locks* "OK, this is now happening"
I think it was an OCD thing. You see how neatly he folds things and how he is always tidying up around himself. The door opening and closing seemed like another manifestation of his compulsions
@@scottverni8333 I agree, he's very much OCD and needs everything precisely as he arranges it. Watch the beginning of Equalizer 2 when he's at the bar on the train and starts unfolding the napkin and rotating it until he's satisfied with it, and taps his spoon 7 times on the cup.
That's a good point about how his action at the door reflects some internal dialogue or indecision as he tries to decide whether to walk away or exact some justice on these thugs for what they've done and are doing. Like other things in his life, it also reflects his thoughtfulness and precision, as he waits for the right moment to start the meting out of justice and then collects himself as he observes various elements around the room that will play a role in his destruction of each thug. He has an intense focus combined with supreme confidence that allows him to relax and execute what he intends to do.
His performance in Crimson Tide was par excellence!!! And combine that with an equally powerful performance from Gene Hackman and one's brain starts to implode!!! Poignant film too... Given these disturbing times...
5:51 I love how he surveys the entire room in complete detail. The manner in which he calculates an estimate & calmly whispers to himself: "16 seconds." Afterward, the way he grades himself on how well he did. Cold, deliberate & detailed. That is freaking awesome!!
I don't think it's grading him in how well he did, I think he calculates how long it will take and then she's how long he was actually gone. Notice how the guy he killed with the corkscrews took about 9 seconds to actually die, so he subtracts that 9 seconds from the 28 seconds and comes up with the total of 19.
@@kyleringham8290 He could have killed him much faster but purposefully did it in way that made it slower and more painful which is why he subtracted the 9. If he was going off the time for them to all be dead he would still be counting because the main guy on the floor is still alive when he stops

This extended scene is great. Top notch acting by all. Such controlled violence by Denzels character. I even love how he times himself, predicts 16 seconds and hits 19 showing that he is a bit rusty even though it was completely effortless.
The fact that Denzel Washington ( Robert McCall ) gives his opponents a chance to speak Finnish and say what they have to say and give them a chance to make the right decision and walk away is just amazing. Super empaths who were abused by narcissists all their lives and were taught to fight can do this. It is a gift from God to protect the innocent. This style of fighting is the most realistic I have ever seen. Watch the making of this film, you will understand.
We’ll one thing I can say is that the equalizer seems like one of the more realistic action movies I’ve seen. Like out of all these action movies Bourne, bond, MI, wick; this one feels like the most realistic
it's not, this is just for the movie. In reality, he would be dead, because this close combat area, with weapons and guns, could not be predicted in any way. Also, in reality, physics are the same for everyone. It's not like the other guys move in slow motion or do exactly what it's predicted, while Denzel move in light speed. There a many goofs in the scene, a trained close combat personal would never do. For instance, the guy with the gun, why should he go into distance? Just shoot him in the back, that's it. Or the guy at the desk, why he has no gun at his desk. He is in the position, where he must count on such situation, so a gun should be obligatory.
Also u can use it counting system while storming to the enemy fronts, or leaving ur current position or while throwing a hand grenade it’s very effective and most of the special forces using this system for many situations
This is one of the best fight scenes ever and one of my favorite scenes ever in film. Denzel demonstrates total control of the situation. He first surveys his environment very well, then plans and then acts, not allowing his emotions to get the better of him. That's the way you win in life. Very few times, if any, do you go in guns blazing.
It's pretty cool that a pretty good amount of the characters Denzel plays in any action movies has scenes similar to this. The kind where he shows up all calm and quiet and ends up basically going "Well fine, I tried to be nice about this, but now we're gonna do it the hard way" and just killing everybody, only to come out just as calm and quiet after everybody else is dead.
THANK YOU for the full sequences! Gotta love the way you excerpt the critical scenes, with the necessary lead-up material, and then show it in its entirety! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
I love the effect starting at 8:36 making McCall's face blur to look like part of a skull from the POV of the dying mobster. It's very subtle and only lasts for 2 seconds, but the effect is pretty creepy.
Every guy in that scene deserves an Oscar, but boy Denzel definitely killed it. His facial expression when Slavi calls Alina “the trouble maker” was epic. Basically saying “you’re a dead man”.
@@HerrinSchadenfreude those 9 seconds were for his corkscrew moves and extras that were unnecessary... he spilled 9 seconds on the guy but could have floored him immediately with 1 hit.

I suggest that you see "Justified". It's an American TV-show, of small village and crime in Kentucky. The actor (David Meunier) makes absolutely outstanding side-performance and the series is actually very good. He is credited 37 episodes of total of 78 episodes of the series.
Love the McCall character. I understand its just a movie, but it so perfectly illustrates how we should all tread softly because you just never know who you are fucking with. The absolutely worst thing even the strongest most powerful man can do is underestimate his opponent.
I just decided to watch this movie because it was on Amazon Prime. When this scene went down, I was totally surprised. It caught me off guard. Still one of the best movie fight scenes.
The fact that he times himself and he’s disappointed because he keeps finishing slower than what his targeted time was points to the fact that this is him over the hill and past his prime a bit. Meaning that there was a time when he was even more deadlier and efficient than he is in these films as a killer.
My opinion is a bit different, his only competition at this point is himself. So he can only better his craft by timing himself against his own expectations. The fight is not the challenge anymore, he knows he will win, the challenge is to beat is own expectations.
@@cttekin Funny, Because I’ve always found it a bit of both. I think through his career he’s come to understand he’s his only competition, so he started out timing himself in his prime and came to an understanding based on his environment, how long it should take him to finish. In this scene, his takes away the time in which he took to “show off”, like slowly killing the man with the wine opener…Arrives at his new calulcated time which was still over his estimate, and you see him shrug it off as “acceptable”. Because he knows he’s out of practice. It’s beautiful detail
@@cttekin slightly disagree because he made a promise to his wife not to go back to this life. So he’s reluctant to kill again and this scene is his first time back at it. Someone who’s reluctant to kill and is back at it for the first time isn’t looking to challenge themselves but more so to measure themselves to get their skill back on track to what it previously was.
Such an amazing scene! McCall comes in as a calm, reasonable, caring man until he finds out that these men are callous, despicable and unreasonable, he then, with no indication, goes back to his past, to his unknown training skills and automatically morphs into a cold blooded killing machine.
what is a bit unrealistic, is that he can just walk right into the room where the top dude for the russian mafia is; no big burly guy standing guard at the door; no one frisks him for weapons when he comes in, etc.....great scene otherwise.
@@ronyeahright9536 McCall had no weapons! But everyone else in the room did! So they felt they didn’t need a reason to frisk him. That’s what made this scene so intense. McCall took them all out with their own weapons, and used objects in the room as weapons and took every one out with them! You can say it’s unrealistic, but it’s great choreography that’ll make you think that it can actually happen!
@@ronyeahright9536 right…now my question to you is, would the scene be more realistic if it was a different actor? Say maybe….Steven seagal or Jason Statham….?!

But here he brings a real eerie, hardcore intensity of a character who has such a total and devestating CALCULATED ability to cause physical damage. Yet, and the best thing, it is still well within the boundaries of believable. One scene that never gets old. And, besides, which ever movie it is, seeing assholes such as these gangsters get what's coming to them, is always a rewarding treat.
I think the russian actor probably carried this scene along with Denzel. If it wasn't for his performance, the satisfaction of it wouldn't be as great as it is. Respect to these two actors.

That's a good assessment. Makes you wonder how much of a beast he was in his prime.
If you start counting at the last thrust of the corkscrew..... 13 seconds go by while he watches him fall. He was right on target of his 15 seconds.
