Hi Mike! First off, I love your channel. You've made getting back into audio fun and accessible. (I use your ENCN technique and noise reduction/noise gate tips for every video I make.) Secondly, do you have a preset that reduces sibilance and mouth sounds? Or would the Personal Audio Coaching option be the better choice? I've tried to use Adobe's basic DeClicker and DeEsser, but the results are mixed. I then spend too much time manually getting rid of them because they drive me crazy.
Will these help with a hazy background, AND low voice recording? I’m having a hard time trying to edit my audio recording, where the voices aren’t a whisper, but sound like a whisper… AND a noise background.
I'm an audiobook narrator and this has helped IMMENSELY with my post production process, I really appreciate the clarity with which you spoke. Thank you so much!
Hi Mike. Another great video. I pretty much always head straight for option 3 and the noise gate, also cranking up the hold to stop words being clipped. Seems to work for larger projects such as our podcasts and makes the workflow easier. Sometimes analysing the whole recording first of all to get a cut off level to start at. Love your videos and have pretty much learnt all about Audition through your videos.
i have a very different trick for this.... DJ software such as virtual dj and serato, now have voice isolation filters using AI which is trained to identify human voice. the tech has come a LONG way now ,and its almost perfect. it also can be used for instruments, bass and percussion, but for videography we usually just need the voice. so you can put the audio in there, and remove everything except the human voice, and then record that as a new file and then mix it with some of the original noisy file if you want. only issue it has is that if the background noise is due to people talking, then it will also keep those bakground voices too. i dont think adobe have anything like this yet.. but this is where its headed i believe ,and this will be a much handier way to do it than the 3 ways mentioned in the video here.
Glad to have helped. Naturally you want to be recording in the quiestest possible environment as while these methods can reduce noise they also reduce audio quality too. Certainly if you're having to use all three at the same time then you need to think about where you're recording and lower the noise floor.
@@MikeRussell Hey just to clarify i do not use all three at the same time, i will choose one of the method depending on the level of the noise reduction needed. in most cases audio clips recorded by someone else are sent to me for noise treatment befor use in video or audio production, as for mie i'm always looking for the best posible enviroment to record when i have to.
Thank you sooo much! I struggled with the DeNoise effect in Premiere Pro and tried various other effects to fix the voice, but it never came out right. The Noise Reduction effect in Audition fixed the entire sound in a few seconds. I thought it was a lot more complicated and that I would need to adjust various values, but Audition is really great for sound. Once again, I was convinced of the truth of the sentence that every Adobe tool should be used for its intended purpose.
I'm so glad to hear that the Noise Reduction effect in Adobe Audition worked so well for you and made the process much simpler than you expected - that's exactly what I aim for with these tutorials, to provide efficient and effective solutions for common audio production challenges.
why does noise reduction always makes my audio sound like I'm in a big empty room or alienates audio when other effects are added? I've tried doing noise reduction first before anything else, tried it after and I even tried DeNoise instead but that one sounds like there's a shower running in the background. Maybe noise reduction doesn't work well with -33 db raw audio or you just can't reduce noise without damaging voice file. It's strange because in audacity it's so easy to reduce noise. You capture noise before and after effects and it's perfect
Noise reduction can be tricky, especially when dealing with lower dB levels. The 'big empty room' or 'alien' sound often occurs when the settings are too aggressive. Try and get a balance if you can.
@@MikeRussell just watched your adobe audition tutorial which was very helpful :) but it got me thinking. Is it better to record at low levels around -33 to not pick up as much background noise or record between -18 to -12 then remove noise?
you are the dopest and the realist. i remember an old video where you did this tutorial but with some free app. its been a while since I've seen that but its amazing to watch you work. thank you.
Hi Ive been listening to your Adobe Audition tutorials and they are very helpful! My one suggestion would be to go just a bit slower especially when clicking thru procedure on Adobe itself. Thanks again
Have you tried the newest plugins that use AI for noise reduction like UAD C-vox and Waves Clarity? It would be nice if you could show the community those tools as well. Thanks for your videos, keep the good job.
I like to use a program that extracts vocals from mastered tracks, though they doesn't always come out clear like a studio acapella would (obviously). The more instruments/elements (kick, bass, drum, etc.) there are behind the vocals, the less clear and harder to extract they are. Is it possible to make a video on at least sharpening those vocals, or "bringing them forward" so to speak? Normally I'd go into the Parametric Equalizer but I feel there's probably a better way. Would love to hear your take on it.
Isolating vocals from an already mixed and mastered track will never provide clean vocals. The only option is to source and acapella if you need a perfect version.
Fantastic. I would've never tried Dynamics for noise reduction. It sounds like these methods will offset poor room treatment but I know the goal is to have a low noise floor at the front end.
I usually go for the first option, but of late - nothing has changed set-up wise - after applying the noise reduction, the audio sounds like I’m speaking through a tin can! I’ve tried removing and re-installing the Focusrite driver as I thought it might be that, but no. Might try those other options to see if I get the same result and narrow the issue down. Great video as usual, Mike.
To remove background noise from multiple tracks simultaneously in Adobe Audition simply select all the tracks you want to apply the noise reduction effect to and apply the effect using the Multitrack.
Hello Mike, Thanks for all your help. It's such a great ressource for me as a podcaster. Unfortunately, after I followed your advice using the noise gate in waveform-view and applied the effect the gate is working too much, and the file was saved. I feel stupid now since I can't seem to be able to undo it. Please, is there any way to redo the edit or maybe apply any other effect to ease out the cutting effect on the vocal? The best, Mikkel
Hello Mikkel, try to use alternative noise reduction tools like spectral repair or adaptive noise reduction. Also you could try and manually adjust the threshold and attack/decay settings of the noise gate effect to refine the desired reduction.
this frustrates me so MUCHHH ARGHHHHHH, but at the same THANK YOU SO MUCH I never knew in noise reduction you can lift the line (for many years) ........ if that wasn't enough, paired that with autogate and OH MY GOD!!! never heard such a clear voice like this before. now I'm trying to get rid of muffled voice from the lavalier mic, is there are a way to bring back the liveliness of the voice? Vocal enhancer is not doing much
I'm glad you found success with noise reduction and autogate! To bring back the liveliness of the voice from a lavalier mic and enhance vocal clarity try experimenting with EQ adjustments. I just made a video about this.
Mike, your videos are amazing!!! I have a vocal track that has an impossible swish sound to remove, as it only appears during words. Would you be willing to listen to it to give some tips?
WOW MIKE, please share what equipment you are using and the settings to get that quality and richness of your voice. Almost like a radio station broadcast.
@@MikeRussell Hello Mike! I saw equipment recoms, I don't plan on buying an audio interface or pre-amp, will I able to use an 80ohm headphone like the ones in your equip list?
It depends on what you're plugging them into, I definitely wouldn't go above 80ohms unless you're plugging them into professional equipment or using a headphone amplifier.
Thank you Mike for these videos. I have tried to capture a noise print on my track but this function is greyed out on my tab when I go to use it. I am not sure why and was wondering if you could advise. Thank you!!
Hi there! I'm glad you find my videos helpful. The "Capture Noise Print" function might be greyed out due to several reasons such as not having a selection on the audio track or working with a multitrack session.
I recommend removing background noise in Adobe Audition before adding any other vocal effects to ensure a clean foundation for your audio processing. Thank you for your question!
Thanks, Mike! Worked like a charm. I’ve been using the older Audition 3 for about 20 years and never knew this existed. It quite effectively gets rid of my Central AC noise in the background while recording! I am relatively new to this version so I’m sure I’ll have more questions for you. Thanks again, Mike! Salute!
so i use the capture noise profile to highlight the specific sound level i want to cut but it cut out the natural hallow studio noise that i want as well... is their a setting in the noise reduction that will take away the background sounds but keep the hallowed studio noise?
Yes, you can adjust the Noise Reduction settings in Adobe Audition to reduce background noise while preserving the desired natural ambiance in your studio recordings.
Thanks for the wonderful videos Mike! When reducing noise using the noise capture method, why aren't you going to 100% noise reduction? Is the 80% threshold the maximum amount to reduce noise? I just go to 100% noise reduction. The only caveat is that I really need a long capture of the noise print, otherwise the vocals sound phased.
@@MikeRussell Good point. Yes, the noise we deal with is (thankfully!) pretty consistent. It is the hum of the air conditioner units on the roof of the building that permeates the recording area. So, I take a nice long sample before recording and use that. I will try using 80% (or less) to see if it helps. Thanks!
I am going in now to have tht fiddle. Although......I will say this. Given what I am doing (I edit opera so there is singing and music)...I would love to see what your take would be on any given problem that I would have. I would also be MORE than happy to provide you with a clip from one of my Mother's performances in order for you to do this? Ya see, no matter where I go for advice in Audition, I always come back home....here! You have given me the best advice so far and different ways to do things so that I can "fiddle". But my stuff is not speaking. What say you fine sir? Up for an operatic and musical challenge?
how do you remove static noise ? i got this philip recorder for my lecture and all i can hear is loud statics so was wondering on how to clean that up so i can hear the recorded audio
Love your videos. I'm applying speech volume leveler to tracks where the speaker's voice gets really quite at the end of sentences. The leveler is great but it's also spiking his breath making his breathing sounds really loud. I've tried capturing a noise print and doing a reduction but the audio just sounds awful. Is there a right way to do this?
Thank you for your support! Try using the Dynamics Processing effect in Adobe Audition to gently reduce the breath sounds without affecting the overall quality of the audio track. Hope this helps!
I'm glad the first method helped! For persistent background noise, you might need to try a combination of techniques or consider adjusting your recording environment for better results.
Hi Mike, i know u are the best one in audition, so i would ask you if i make audio typing words in azure for example and them put ir in audition, could i change this audio in order to leave it with intonations that simulate real speech emotions. If yes, how can i make this? thanks in advance
I usually highlight it then silence it but how you pop up the preview window so when you using auto gate you can see where its removing the noise, cheers?
Is there any way we can isolate a human voice and remove other human voices . For example I got an audio where a lady was singing and I had to remove the voice of other people talking in the background. I tried with izotope too but could not find any better way. Dialogue isolate did not help because it only works when the voice has to be separated from noise but in this case their is voice plus voice. So is there any thing, any magical plugin Mike?
Hi Mike. Great video. Thanks. I've tried to find the answer in many places, but I get horizontal lines in the spectral view. Together, they produce a noise - humming plus some high frequencies. The lines are spaced almost like harmonics - parallel and decreasing in distance as you move up the spectrum. I'm in a well-treated room. Using a decent USB mic (Rode NT1). If I bump up the input gain in the computer (PC), the noise floor does go up significantly. Haven't found an answer in Adobe's forum, YT videos or any place else. The wave is not a perfect sine wave during the noise, and I hate having to push really hard on any post-processing to tell you the truth. Using gates, denoise, Waves NS1 and all that together ends up eating into the vocals. Any ideas would really help. Appreciate it. :)
Hi! Thanks for watching. Oh my, sounds like you might be dealing with some interference or electrical noise. I would recommend trying a few things: 1) Check your microphone cables and connections for any issues. 2) Experiment with different USB ports on your PC to see if that helps. 3) Try using a ground loop isolator to eliminate any potential grounding issues. Let me know how you get on!
@@MikeRussell Tried the USB ports. I reckon it's the first reason. I hadn't thought about the third one though. I'll give it a look. Appreciate it. 👍 Have a good one. _edit : just looked up what a ground loop isolator is. Can't believe I haven't dealt with one before. My guess is you're absolutely right. Thanks again._
Hi Mike thank u for all great videos.. I want to ask u about the high voic problems.. when the voice had recorded while it was loud we hear the noise of loudspeaker .. how can I remove it with out effecting the voice .. thank u 💓
Always make sure the speakers are off when recording voiceovers. Look for the video on removing echo although I suspect your best option will be to record again with the speakers off.

now i am in a good mood
😁
Many tnx Bro!
You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help!
Thank you Mike :)
👍
Thanks so much
You're welcome
Mike if we are using the third meh=thod that is Dynamic then how I will export the audio track in Adobe Premiere?
In Premiere you can right click any audio and there is the option to edit in Audition.
Do you recommend doing this before or after you have added any other vocal effects? Thank you.
Salute!
thanks helpful vid

Hi Mike. Thanks for this tutorial. How do you decide which method to use?
It depends on what the noise is.
so i use the capture noise profile to highlight the specific sound level i want to cut but it cut out the natural hallow studio noise that i want as well... is their a setting in the noise reduction that will take away the background sounds but keep the hallowed studio noise?
Yes, you can adjust the Noise Reduction settings in Adobe Audition to reduce background noise while preserving the desired natural ambiance in your studio recordings.
Thanks for the wonderful videos Mike! When reducing noise using the noise capture method, why aren't you going to 100% noise reduction? Is the 80% threshold the maximum amount to reduce noise? I just go to 100% noise reduction. The only caveat is that I really need a long capture of the noise print, otherwise the vocals sound phased.
Any noise reduction has a negative impact on the audio quality so the least you can use the better. Always best to solve noise before you hit record.
Thanks!
Is it possible to turn them off while you record?

Have a look at noise reduction videos on the channel where we reduce lots of different noises.
@@MikeRussell they show how to remove background sound not static hissing sounds
The first one is working for me I tried the third one but it's not working the noise is still in the speaking. Thank you so much!!!
At the top right of the main waveform window there is a show preview editor button
@@MikeRussell cheers buddy I seen it when I fully watched your video you going over to it 😅 thanx anyway
Thanks Lazarbeam's brother! Great tutorial
You're welcome! I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful in removing background noise in Adobe Audition.
appreciated !
Thank you for your appreciation!
This wouldn’t be possible as the frequencies would be too similar in between the two different voices.
@@MikeRussell thank u very much Mike.. but the voice is from an old tape and it's very important.. I don't know if there's another way to fix this 😕
Look at the videos for removing echo. It works best on room reflections rather than out and out echo but it's worth a try
Would it be better to do noise reduction before or after ENCN?
Before. Always noise reduction first 👍
@@MikeRussell thanks
Perfect ...!!!
Noise reduction is very good but should only ever be a last resort and noise should always be eliminated at source wherever possible 👍
