i'd been stagnating on improving in pixel art for years, and ever since i've started watching your videos i've improved massively (not just me being an arrogant prick, i've been showing off my art alot recently and people seem to really like it- also i now have the confidence to actually show my art off now thanks to you lmao). your videos are so amazing, i really do hope you don't stop! also, i couldn't say my favorite character sprite of all time cuz it's just not really something i've thought about, but out of your characters i really like your stone golem that you did recently.
Some of the level decoration sprite work in the original Worms is great, Metal Slug 1 has brill enemy and player sprites and finally Jazz Jackrabbit for DOS reads great with its bright colours and style. Great vid as always!
@@blackcitadel37 Jazz Jackrabbit was the game that came with my very first gaming PC (not that they were really called that back then). Awesome game. Sequel was really fun too. Remember the sprites seeming really high definition at the time.
It's great to see all your work together like this, it really shows off the breadth of your skills. My favourite character sprite has always been red from the original pokémon games, because it's the first time I properly realised that game art was just pictures made of tiny squares! I can vividly remember squinting at my game boy screen, to copy the sprite, pixel by pixel, on to graph paper, and into MSPaint on my computer.
seeing all of these sprites together is honesty so nostalgic! Side note: I’ve been doing sprite art for years now and haven’t improved noticeably, until I started to watch your videos… Thanks for everything!
when you asked our favourite sprites I thought you were talking about the sprites you made, and honestly I love the super famicom control team and the fighter gummies, the idea of creating such interesting and creative characters out of such simple things like candy and buttons on a controller is so amazing for me I wish I could do the same
What I love and respect most about your channel is your framing of decisions as stylistic choices rather than right or wrong. After I started pixel art and not-so-coincidentally watching your videos, the algorithm bombarded me with pixel art tutorials veering straight into "NEVER use black outlines! ALWAYS use shadows and highlights!"-territory which... idk man, I don't think any discipline of art works like that. What you do on the other hand - discussing the various effects the different choices can have - is perfect for me. It makes me want to try the things you mentioned out for myself, see the effect for myself, see if I agree, see if I can find an exception. It's just far more engaging.
I thoroughly love the battle scene sprites from the Shining Force games and would to see you do a battle scene between Link and Dark Beast Ganon from Breath of the Wild in that style. Upon seeing the Alucard sprite, I could see a battle scene between him and Dracula in that style as well.
my favorite sprite atm has gotta be robo-ky from guilty gear, especially Isuka. he can be given the moves of other characters in Isuka, and the sheer variety and creativity in what he can copy and how he pulls it off without the powers and weapons the other fighters have makes him so fun to look at. the overall spritework in SFIII is also really good, the sheer level of detail and smoothness of animation couldn't have been easy to pull off in that era, or even nowadays, really.
Always a delight to see these analysis/discussion videos! I'd say my current favorite sprite works come from Stardew Valley and River City Girls. Can't pick just one sprite though haha
great to see your progression so far! been loving all the tutorials and commentary every since the channel came up. thank you for the great content and I hope you keep having fun making all these amazing pixel artworks!
By far my favourite sprites are the haribo fighters. They just feel retro in that cool nostalgic way (even though I never even grew up with a game boy colour). I can’t wait to see what other sprites we’ll see in the future :)
It's hard to pick a favorite! But I'm really fond of just about everything in Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent, and I love the colors and overall vibe of Breath of Fire IV's battle sprites.
Great Job as always. Every time I feel like I have a grip on pixel art, you upload a new video and I learn something new or see things in a new light. I love it.
Love your channel, Brandon! You always do such a great job on your videos. I discovered you a few months ago and have been tearing through all of them. I don't know my favorite, but a lot of the sprite work from the older Marvel vs. Capcom games definitely come to mind, so good pick with Spidey.
The information you provide us is so amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. (Also my favorite sprite is Sam from Eastward. Though I've falling in love with that game so I maybe a little bias.)
I know this is a bit older but I love your work and how you simply show your process. My 3 favorites are: 1) Rock Golom 2) Gameboy character 2 bit color (most recent post). I like how you can make something so simple into great detail. 3) Blade Runner. Just watched that movie. Keep up the good work.
Wow! This gives me a great idea of varying looks because when I try to convert a drawing into pixel art it never seems to go how I imaged it, this honestly gives me that kinda push to just draw it out in pixels rather than trying to just look off of a physical drawing to see what I get as that's what I typically do
I'm a big fan of the 16ish pixel height because it forces the artist to abstract features and it's always fun to see how people "solve" how to convey an object at that resolution
Been a while since I've watched one of these! Hope you've been doing well dude. Planning to start getting back into my projects, and also work on pixel art again too. (This vid was quite helpful for that haha). Your tone seems calmer btw! xD
I really like these videos. I'm not sure if I want to go into pixel design or not yet but I really enjoy seeing the workflow. My fave sprites are a bit basic but I love Sonic, Mario and crash bandicoot as they're the highlight of my youth gameplay but also because I think they really are fun and we'll drawn.
It's quite hard to just pick a favorite sprite, I'd just say in general, I love the pixel art in Risk of Rain, Stardew Valley, and lot from the GBA era of games. Risk of Rain's pixel art really gives a since of scaled, and is a great example of tiny sprite work, with a lot of the enemies and characters being no more then 10 pixels tall. Stardew valley, just has a great homemade feel to it. With Eric have no prior pixel art experience, he learned as he made the game. And GBA sprites are just awesome with how many different styles there are, from Fire Emblem to Pokemon, to Mario and Luigi. All amazing stuff.
I personnally love the breath of fire 4 sprites. i wanna get better at that style for a game i wanna make ^^ your videos are just amazing and full of details, i used to be like. selecting the pixel amount first and then having always similar results. but proportion depending on what look you wanna achieve is just nice information to have. kudos to you p.s still cant believe you use a trackpad. wow
my favourite sprites are from the game Metal Gear: Ghost Babel on the Game Boy Colour. Both the tiny character sprites and the larger art sprites are AMAZING.
Favourite sprites? Basically anything from Jojo Heritage for the Future. The sprites are real clean, the animations are stylish and smooth, and the poses are just *chef's kiss*. There's so much personality and style in each sprite.
Kakyoin's taunt, Star Platinum's hand in Jotaro's idle stance, Rush punches clashes, time stop shenanigans, S.DIO's counter, the K.O. portraits that get sliced up or shot at depending on the final blow. HFTF is just gorgeous. _Busted AF_ but gorgeous.
Iris’s Sprite set in X4, as well as the expansion by FxFreitas, are just great and favorites of mine. They manage to capture how delicate and innocent she is even at that resolution.
Thank you, Brandon, that was very informative and helpful! I'm in the middle of designing and drawing some pixel DnD characters (avatars for a modern app, I have a thin space of weird proportion for them: 54x89px) and your experience helps me a lot! Great idea for a video! I'd like to see some videos of you trying to create the same character, in the same pose, in different heights and outline styles - of course if you found it fun enough for you :) I like what you said about no-outline-style being connected with more mature visuals. I think that's very true. This always reminds me of such games like Another World (or Out Of This World) or Prince of Persia. Have you ever played or analysed the game Another World? It's beautiful both visually and storywise :)
Thanks dude! That's a great idea to tackle the same character in different stylistic approaches, will have to keep that in mind! It's funny you mention Another World, because I was reading about that just a few weeks ago - haven't had the opportunity to play it (or source it for that matter...) but the visuals are stunning and it looks like the kind of thing that was ahead of it's time in a way. Gonna have to get around to that one! :D
I personally love the look of the GBA and DS era Castlevania games, especially the ones with Soma Cruz. Those seem to really push the boundaries of what's possible. I've been practicing that 'painterly' approach for years now, but it's just SO DIFFICULT!!!
Earthworm Jim has my favorite spritework. It's weird how they did it though, instead of just making a pixel sprite, they made full on drawings and then digitized, then crunched them down to pixel art. Crazy
My favorite sprite of all time has to be Guy from the SFA series, but the entire cast of Chrono Trigger is also amazing. Oh! The characters in River City Girls are also top-notch.
