I could imagine if Mega Man had a dance club / disco level, you could put those new highlights on a new layer and have them fade in and out with the dance lights. Maybe even change colour in time with the music. 🪩
I was hoping to find a comment like this. The 19 color one actually looked really awesome on the CRT. Would be interesting to see an entire scene mocked up using that style.
I'm partial to minimal palettes, so I love the 5-color v2. It's interesting that bringing down the saturation made the colors more multipurpose. I gotta keep that in mind.
Totally! Always something I have to remember as well, since I tend to go for saturated/punchy - but lowering the saturation makes it easier to pair up different hues
@@BJGpixel something else i found fascinating about the 5 color v2, is that it suddenly looks like a gameboy color sprite rather than an nes sprite. I can imagine playing pokemon crystal and running into a wild mega man!
Tbh I always prefer colors in less saturated tones that are closer together and multi purpose Not only it looks pretty but it can be considered to be impressive by some and on top of that it saves resources Theorically, if you were to mod one of the og MegaMan to add these multipurpose versions, it would work except for some minor slowdown in some parts, since one layer of color doesn't update shape
I think it was the best because it didn't use many colours at all, might also be because I'm use to drawing with only plain pencil so less complicated and multicoloured stuff looks better to me.
I actually love the 19 color? It's a LOT and certainly not usable for a game, but for illustration or certain game cinematics, I think it's super cool (especially in comparison to Too Many Mario, which really was just Too Much) Also, 0 colors was an unexpected but [chefs kiss] perfect addition
The 19-colour sprite actually looks fantastic; it’s so stylised with the way it’s got various lighting sources and colours, and gives the impression of being in a neon-lit cyberpunk-inspired level, which would fit Megaman quite well
the 9-color one seems perfect for the clean sprite in modern screens, but the 14 one seems perfect in CRT. 19 colors are not bad, but I agree its a little too much lol
honestly i really love how the colors blended together for the 19-color Megaman! I was surprised, since I thought it looked a bit goofy in PS, but the CRT does wonders
I really enjoy your videos brandon! I like the focus on just exoirementing with diffent rendering styles and just messing arou d with colors and just not worrying about making like a finished piece, half of art is the process of it and having fun!
The end result is amazing. I've been watching you for years, but every time I'm amazed at how, with just a few changes, you can turn what looks like a finished graphic into such a great piece like this enhanced Megaman! Respect! 😍
Thanks dude! It's always surprising to see the number of possibilities with how to finish something like this - hard to pick just a single style, so I include them all 😅 Appreciate your support, as always 🙌
@@BJGpixel If you're surprised by this, imagine my surprise when I'm certain that a particular graphic is already in its final version and cannot be improved, and then you come along and not only improve it but also do so in several variations haha! 😅😉 Awesome job! Hey great video! I know I’m going to sound like a bunch of other commenters, and I know you might not even read this, but you inspired me to start pixel art! I bought aseprite and that’s all I’ve been doing recently. I’ve watched almost all of your videos within the last month or two. Anyway, I’m writing this comment to tell you thanks for inspiring me and having great content. Have a great day!
I have to admit, I was pretty happy when I saw you released a video at around 11:00 PM. But it was even better after hearing that one iconic elevator music song! Another amazing job as always, and I liked the mega-man army!
Yeah, I think the MvC Palette version really works great on the CRT monitor, It has just the right amount of stepping and the saturation levels and color variance is not too extreme either.
Too many color joking aside, I genuinely love the magenta and cyan lighting you added to your Megaman and Mario sprites. I'd unironically love a game that used that aesthetic in their pixel art.
I’m a graphic designer so I know a good bit about color theory. But I love the way you explain it in your videos, i definitely could never word it as clearly as you do. Always fun to see your content, the 14 color and the halfway to MvC were my favorites!
The 19 color is good but the most vintage and long-term classic looking one is the 5 color V2. You can see it in the old times working for years with no updates and serving generations 😢
I'd really, really love to see you shrink a sprite more and more, seeing when it becomes indistinguishable. I feel like that might be something pixel artists have already cracked, but I'm a more "regular" artist and it seems like a super interesting topic! (Plus, probably а clickable video)
The 5-color v2 looks like it belongs in a gameboy color game! All look quite good and im sure with the right bg even the 19-color would look good (like if the 2 rim lights were contextual and changed based on each stage)
I love the 14 colors, but the 19 colors has a specific flare to it that could make for a good aesthetic for a game, and the revised 5 color sprite could fit those low color types of games, amazing work.
I like pixel art, and your content really scratches that itch! Your vibe is very calming and nice to just watch/listen to! Thank you for posting these videos :D +1 sub
Recently for my new indie game project (which i might make) i was experimenting sprites for enemies with my girlfriend, so she made a cat-apillar and i made some slime dudes, the point is, that day i learnt the beauty of using more than just black for the sprite outline, this whole time I thought that i was bad at pixel art, after making some of the twins resprites i realized my flaw was not adding enough vibrancy to make certain areas pop more, that's about what i wanted to share!
5-colour v2 looks like a GBC sprite while double digits move towards 16-bit consoles. I actually liked the MVC pallette one too. Excellent work, as always.
I always find it interesting when you try to replicate other rendering styles in pixel-art. Using a shadow under the topmost eye-pixels really made it look more like what I picture in my head when I think of box-art mega man.
Oh the 5 color v2 you nailed it man really proved what you are capable of too with this it truely shocked me when you showed off that one its amazing gives me gbc vibes i really love it truely special talent you have keep it up
I’ve been experimenting with the same things today - trying to find a middle ground between 3-color x2 size sprites and that overly-pillowed look, and also landed on a 9-color version as a decent starting point. Picotron’s alpha release has had me thinking of how to upscale sprites and also play around with adding color. 3-color versions look too flat, and while one cannot do photoshop tricks within Picotron the color palettes out there offer some good midway steps to choose from. I’m leaning hard into Picotron V4 on Lospec, currently (though I absolutely LOVE intense colors and am bucking against the trend towards desaturated palettes). Great content - I’d love to see you continue this experimentation and critical examination of spritework’s evolution beyond the arcade.
The 19 colour sprite looks totally rad, it'd make for an awesome substitute of the 14 colour version in a level with a bunch of neon lights! ✨ Nice seeing everything on the CRT at the end too, the gradients did end up looking very good! 😁
Thanks so much! Yeah even though I made that one to be ridiculous, it seems potentially viable if there was an entire neon-soaked level design to go along with it 😎 This was a fun CRT Time to put together; seeing all the subtle differences and the way they blend on there ✨
Thanks so much Brandon. I love listening to your process. It's so helpful! I am a huge fan of hue shift shading, so I really enjoy hearing how you developed this sprite while exploring that process. I really appreciate how you share your thoughts and considerations regarding this. 🎉
19 would only really work if those gratuitous shading would come from dynamic lighting of a stage; but damn would it look gorgeous in an appropiate scene.
I loved the one with few colors and little contrast, it looks official, I love your sprites. I hope you can show us sub-pixel animation in a future video. 🤩😍
I always had the problem of making colors like blue washed out when I tried to make them lighter and brighter. It was a paradox as I didn't want to change the hue but wanted to make it brighter (which just isn't possible). This video helped me realize how much it helps to shift the hue towards the adjacent lighter hue when trying to make that color "brighter." Thank you!
Loved them all, but i think my favorite was the 5 color v2. there’s just something about it’s simplicity and the way the highlights were especially in the eyes that just drew me in.
Love it and they look great on your CRT (such a genius way to finally view your work). It's hard (for me anyways) to decide on a finished look as the dreaded choice paralysis kicks in!
I would love to see the end result with an insane amount of hue variation. While it's definitely overkill on the palette, going for a unique color for every pixel is definitely doable in pixel art if you know your colors. Would look really painterly, especially on a CRT!
the 19 color one I could see as a key animatio. slot for when you are firing your blaster or an explosion goes off. like as a momentary stark light from an explosive source
I love the videos and I've been absolutely smashing through them recently trying to absorb as much knowledge and technique as possible. If you could maybe do a beginner tips video that may be super helpful to a lot of people I'm sure. Thank you and keep it up 🐸
