Thanks, this is great. Fascinatingly there are many similar statements in the Dhammapada; a collection of sayings of the Buddha, e.g.:
"Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.
Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow.
    --
Just as a storm throws down a weak tree, so does Mara [i.e. unwholesome impulses, unskillfulness] overpower the man who lives for the pursuit of pleasures, who is uncontrolled in his senses, immoderate in eating, indolent, and dissipated.
    --
There are those who do not realize that one day we all must die. But those who do realize this settle their quarrels.
    --
Let the discerning man guard the mind, so difficult to detect and extremely subtle, seizing whatever it desires. A guarded mind brings happiness.
    --
Few among men are those who cross to the farther shore. The rest, the bulk of men, only run up and down the hither bank.
    --
Those whose minds have reached full excellence in the factors of enlightenment, who, having renounced acquisitiveness, rejoice in not clinging to things - rid of cankers, glowing with wisdom, they have attained Nibbana in this very life.
Calm is his thought, calm his speech, and calm his deed, who, truly knowing, is wholly freed, perfectly tranquil and wise."
As far as I can tell, the practice of meditation is the core element for developing a "happy brain" and a more care-free, unburdened and present-focused conscioussness -- and modern neuroscience is beginning to catch up with the wisdom of the stoics, mystics -- and eastern thinkers such as the Buddha -- whose voices echoes throughout history. Cheers!

Your philosophy videos are awesome, they’re not overly complex or wordy, like many lectures can be. Listening to philosophy usually takes a lot out of you, because of all the focus and analysis it takes, some how you’ve made it relaxing and calming, rather than overly analytic and exhausting to listen to.

In a consumerist society Stoicism is such a well-settled philosophy to stop the anxiety of buying unnecessary stuff as well as to prevent the perfectionism. "If they want me to do something; I'll do my best to do so, but I won't push myself, for I'd be incurring in such an over demanding which makes to pay attention to the procedure of how I do the job rather than the job itself"

  • @blizzmen

    Great video!
The Meditations were my first introduction to philosophy and I still like to read them today :) It's just such a powerful and logical philosophy - put in relatively simple terms. I even gave copies of it to 2 of my friends who struggled with depression or anxiety in school and both of them reported to have gotten some form of help from reading the Meditations. Fun fact: I live in the city where Marcus Aurelius died - Vienna, Austria :P
Anyway, how about doing a video on Daoism? I always felt like it had a lot in common with stoicism, but generally Daoism seems to have a stronger focus on more cosmological / metaphysical topics. But still, I think the resulting attitude is the same, call it indifference, wu-wei, "Gelassenheit" or letting go.

Has similarities with Christianity - self reliance, personal responsibility, community for man, compassion, charity, etc...They're both based on classic Greek virtues and sprang/were popularized in the Roman world and spread to Europe.
The great ideas of the Enlightenment were based on stoicism and Christianity such as individual freedoms...Adam Smith was a Christian who read Epictetus and Seneca regularly. Thomas Jefferson died with Seneca on his night stand. Benjamin Franklin was also well versed in the Stoics and stoicism. It's the philosophy for doers and on how to be resilient...

Complaining Qoheleth A Greek named Zeno is considered the founder or father (?) of Stoicism in the year 301 BC. Alexander the Great died in 323 BC. Some believe the Greeks brought back Buddhist ideas from the east. There are differences but I, at best, a layperson sharing what was told to me. A major difference between the two is the motivation to practice. In Buddhism the motivation is improvement of ones station in the next life, with the ultimate goal of reaching paradise. (forgive me for not recalling the Buddhist name) One studies Stoicism to lead a better life for it’s own sake, and perhaps societies sake in the here and now. Personally, I value and study both. I hope this helps someone, on the odd chance it gets read. 😊

Just realised this guy persecuted the Christians. - One can spend their life trying to be a stoic kage, yet fail to understand what happiness really means. If happiness is not based in truth and instead on ones own desires/feelings, you get a emperor who persecutes horrifically, a great many. -
