Stoicism has completely improved the quality of my life. It's not a switch you can flip, you have to work at it each day. If something bothers you, you have to enter the world of Epictetus and take on that Stoic perspective. I feel like I've been robbed of "How to Live 101" all these years, so grateful for the writings of Marcus Aurelius and teachings of Epictetus.

I can testify to that. Am making more critical decisions with great insight and most importantly remaining calm when adversity or problems arise. Basically it was the best thing to ever happen to me in 2020, is to chance upon Stoicism and to use it in my life.
What more could I desire for? Nothing!

the only problem is if stoicism is accepted by the average person then they would become complecent.. chaos and disorder and difference in being is necessary so that others may feel more strongly .. For example according to stoicism i may not care so much if there is racism because i'd "feel" that it's up to me to control my internal thoughts and work hard enough to overcome my environment rather than being controlled by it and forcing me to change it..

    • @clidelivingston
      @clidelivingston 6 лет назад +16

to me living a life of stoicism means not so much accepting bad things as good things just to save our sanity, that's more the opposite. it means controlling our own happiness, that doesn't mean don't stand up for something if it violates your set of ethics, and that's where spirituality comes in, if we live a life more intuune with our spirits rather than tunned into the Kardashian trash these days, we would have a more similar set of ethics as a nation.

My research on this philosophy has shown me quite the opposite, however, I may be wrong of course. My interpretation of what the stoics believe is that justice and courage do not sit idle when there are injustices occurring before their eyes. Stoics believe even slaves are men, and no man is above another man, but rather all are suffering, and the only cure to internal suffering is to treat others with kindness and love, while working out your own issues without complaining. It is not nihilism or complacency to be a stoic, but a path to become a higher being, and to do the opposite of what evil men do, and if need be to rise against evil in order for justice to prevail.

I wish I had known this was a formal philosophy years ago. I have struggled with depression and meaning since I was a kid. And all my friends "cheer ups" and "it gets betters" only made things worse. I lost really important friends to me recently when I told them to stop doing that because I was trying to let go of hopes to things that were causing me more harm then good. They took that as giving up on life. I have been a DEVOUT follow of stoic philosophy since long before I knew what it was. But seeing the teachings formalized it helping me so much.

Seems like I'm currently transitioning to stoicism from nihilism/pessimism as a result of simply trying to find a positive outlook on things and life in general, being tired of my present state, which led me to believe I should control my thoughts, not be upset about things I have no influence over, do something about things I have control over to better my situation, focus on positives in negatives, be indifferent to having and/or experiencing something. All sounds like stoicism. The last point, I figured, worked because you do not notice the time that passes before you obtain something of value or pleasure, so it's always a pleasant surprise, while if you longed for it, you would have spent the whole time not having the thing you longed for suffering from not being able to obtain it.

There is quite a bit of overlap between stoicism and Nietzsche. Love of fate (amor fati) features prominently in both, and the idea of the stoic sage is quite similar to that of the übermensch, at least in my mind.

    • @wolferine6466
      @wolferine6466 6 лет назад

The Max Does thinking life has no meaning mean you have a negative outlook on life? Not always. Just because there is no concrete meaning to life doesn’t mean there is a right or wrong way to live life. We also don’t need a meaning to life because either way we are here and we can choose to do whatever we want with this reality.

I just discovered Stoicism, and I've never seen a philosophy I've identified with more. My life has been hell, but I find fortitude in it. I've found that playing games, I always tend to be very tanky characters. You stand at the front, bearing all the pain with a laugh and a taunt, having your enemies bear down on you.
Of course, gaming also provides a good bit of insight into the idea for the analogy as well... Eventually, most people will be worn down by the stresses that stoics can endure, but the accepting life's pleasures is also accepting that there needs to be a healer behind a tank to relieve the pain before the stoic buckles.
I heard they valued "Temperance" before, and it was really the only thing that prevented me from fully vibing with the idea, since I regularly enjoy intoxicants and small pleasures, But how you describe it with the idea that you'd be just as content without, that totally made sense to me, having been sober for months at a time without even thinking about it.

“Whatever happens to you had been waiting to happen since the beginning of time.” is very similar to the mantra i try to live my life by: “whatever happens, happens”
i’ve been learning about stoicism recently and while i’m not ready to call myself someone who practices it, the ideas and beliefs seem very similar to how i would like to (but don’t necessarily *do*) carry myself and go about life

  • @daves6503

I find it really very interesting how similar this seems to be to ancient eastern traditions, the emphasis on the one-ness of all creation....that we are both of fleshly being and higher spiritual being at the same time, that there is a supreme order and path (destiny) to our lives and a purpose that unfolds.
It underscores the basic, elemental truth that there really is "one true way" to find your higher self......to attain a closer connection to spirit, to the creation force (god), and that in all of man's concocted religions.....all of them - even the furthest fringe / mystic beliefs...to structured, "organized religion" still all funnel back to a common thread.....
This is reassuring, this existence is just one of so many that we (our etheric, spirit self) will experience as a manifestation of god itself.....this one spin around the race track and there have been many before and there are many more ahead.....just learn, and try and become a better version of yourself, be true, be kind, be loving, be higher.....

Thats where i have a bit of a problem myself. Live the way you want and dont put labels on it. You practiced stoicism before you even knew it was an actual way of life with a name, why confine yourself now to it? Anyway, i was the same as you. I generally practiced it in my life then i found out it was a philosophy and way of life. Stoicism is the closest teachings and outlook on how i live my life, but I dont call myself a stoic or even feel that i should belong to that group. Maybe its because i feel that groups end up controlling the way you think or live, and i want to be free of that.

It's funny that the stoic view towards wanting things you don't have is very similar to the theory on not having an overhyped videogame ruin your expectations of it. If you are hyped and it is a good game, you'll enjoy it. If it is a bad game, you feel a large emptiness in your life. However if you choose not to get hyped over a game and it turns out to be terrible, you don't feel like you're missing anything at all, but if it is a good game, you will get just about as much enjoyment from it as the person who is hyped for it.

This is a great video. I love the practical knowledge aspect of this philosophy. It seems also that it shares some similarities to the Dao De Jing, especially the principle of non action - which I interpret as being the fact of us not being in control of the grand scheme of things among other external factors. The ancient text, as you might know, speaks of living according to nature and also to avoid "abundance" (worldly pleasures?) and that is the path to completion. For "if a man desires nothing, isn't he, therefore, complete?".
If you haven't so far, I think it would be a good idea if you made about the Daoism or its immortal works, namely the one I mentioned above
Thanks for all your work, I love this channel

I feel like this is easy to apply when a person is content with the choices they have made and are making. If the bad things in life were not brought upon by my bad decisions it would be much easier to have this soft determinism view towards life. The problem comes when something bad happens to us that is a direct result of something we consciously did. Thoughts?

I offer that there may be a more useful way to frame the Stoic idea of nondependancy. Indifference seems to infer, in the 21st Century, an attitude of not caring. I don't think the Stoics hold this in mind, they lean more toward non-attachment? If I am incorrect about this let me know here.

Yes it is...also followed in Hinduism. But they (stoics) take it one step further by saying that how we react to it is in our hands and we can shape it as we want.

Very interesting point. It’s mentioned that no one could ever be perfect stoic. So, Maybe Hinduism , and facets of Buddhism , are just forks in the road of stoicism that we get to choose from in becoming the type of stoic we wish to be :)

There's a few parrallels between stoicism and Christianity. I'm not saying stoics believed in God but they lived a life that Christians are told to live; not word for word though ofc

Philosophy and religion are two different things, you don’t go to “heaven/paradise” for believing and living by it. It is only to make sense of our reality.

The main hole in stoicism is, desires are not up to us. If it were, none of us would be here today. Our desires are a product of millions of years of evolution, if its attainment were indifferent to our desires, we would not need to have a desire for it, because it would already be predetermined, there would be no need for an internal biological mechanism to drive us to it.

I agree. I was severely depressed at the same time I was coming to the realization that I was becoming an Atheist. I realized all there was in life was reproduction, survival, and reduction of suffering. Absurdism introduced me to the idea of making my own meaning and purpose. Then my wife and I had a daughter. Reproduction suddenly had a whole new meaning, and it almost feels inherent, but I've worked towards that. I've made it my life's goal to protect, to love, to teach that little girl. She's my meaning, my purpose. I am happier than I've ever been in my life.

I have been practicing stoicism but I found it paradoxical. Like It is necessary to climb social ladder but in turn very difficult to stay calm when things go wrong. Same goes with earning money and other external stuffs which you form Bonding. As a social beings and it is rooted in us we form bonding. It is impossible not to do so. We identify ourselves with our processions and that forms our ego. Like the line in a fight club 'The things you own end up owning you'. So I'd suggest to first not to identify yourself with your processions. You're not you cloths, money, beauty no nothing. And second, lose your ego. And first step is the way you losing your ego.

Anyone else wondering why at 13:23 the painting "der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer" by Caspar David Friedrich from 1818 is shown??? It is associated with the German literature era "Romantik" which commonly promotes a life in which longing for something is a key element...in my eyes the total opposite of the stoics way of life, who is trying to be happy with the things he has at hand...

    • @Bleuenvert

Mmm I think they have some pretty important key differences, though I do agree there are some major overlap. It is also noteworthy that historically stoicism developed around the time that buddhist thought reached greece!
I don't disagree that some schools of buddhists have arguably "pointless practices". This being said, stoicism seems to lack an explanation of how to properly cultivate the states of mind it professes (something meditation happens to do quite well).

Is this pre or post Siddhartha Gautama's saying :"We crave and cling to impermanent states and things"? A lot of stoicism and Buddhist practices have helped me tremendously through very difficult times in my life. They've also, in my opinion, contributed to a more healthy society. For when the individual is content he/she then brings this to the environment from which said individual resides. In lieu of looking toward the sky or theatrical religious figure heads and scrambling for the why & how in my opinion we should focus on the here and now. We have a beautiful planet. Call this "Heaven" if your psyche requires such. Also, look inside yourself. We all have what is described as God like qualities. Adapt this if you need the label. I'd keep from proclaiming "I'm a God" to yourself but compassion, peace, equality and love exist inherently in us all for the most part. #ThIsIsNoTThEaLgOrItHiM

Stoicism's whole rationale holds up because of the belief in fate and the methaphysical guiding hand of the logos - so that anything that happens is beneficial when taken into the broad context of the cosmos. Modern CBT doesn't have this component so when it teaches downtrodden people that it's not the situation itself that is the problem but their interpretation of it the result is just a hollow call for social conformity and not challenging the establishment. If a person loses their job the psychologist will say ¨well it's not employment that is the problem it's your interpretation of it¨ and so on so forth so the problems of society are always pushed back onto the individual.
