Modernism and art
Beginning in the late nineteenth century a movement began to sweep the globe that brought radical change to every aspect of life. The industrialized world was on the rise after witnessing the tragedies of World War I, and artistic movements began to change culture in ways that are still seen today. People were re-examining their values and finding traditional concepts of the Enlightenment were no longer applicable. A desire for a new way of creating and expressing the individual’s place in the world emerged and abstract art from literature to music became the norm.

Artist's work in this video is mentioned in the description!
I kept my eyes on the purple duck: it moved. It even showed a pile of books, which might be a recent haul or a TBR.
Haha, those are just books I am always reading. Study books! There is always piles of them on my desk. 😅
Ooh I could talk about 20th century art all day long!! A lot of my early drag was inspired by art history, I even have a clock dress inspired by Persistence of Memory!
Oh! I would love to hear your take on these subjects! 😮😊
This video shows why engineers need artist friends.
And a lot of artists need engineering friends! Haha
I liked how disruptive modernism was to art. Especially going from such such a long historical stretch of praising realism (the contemporary life subjects being my personal favorite) to this avant-garde modernist works was such a shock. Totally changed the standard that critics used in judging art as a whole. Nice intro, looking forward to this series!
Yes! I agree, with the contemporary subjects being the focus in so many works--Von Gogh's Three Sunflowers in a Vase, A Pair of Shoes, being two of my favorites. Though he did depart from such styles of painting, his more realist works have always been what I preferred. 😊😎
I Remb so clearly when I was introduced to abstract art . Instant love
Some of it can really be captivating.😊😊
Very nice sharing my dear respected friend Big Big likes & full Support from Ahmed Ali Nizamani,,,.
..
Thank you so much for taking the time to check this out! 😊😊
The history of the term avant-garde was very interesting! Modernism's abandonment of previous trends were also heavily influenced by moving away from a strict religious understanding of life and the world around us reflected in "high brow" art and embracing art just for art's sake - or at least that's what I think I remember from my modernist modules haha
I appreciate how the modernist era paved the way for the diverse, experimental forms of writing we see today!
Oh, definitely! There was a huge turn in people's acceptance of what could be considered art. I always think back to Wilde's "all art is quite useless" quote, as it seemed to single handedly take away a lot of that "high brow" and replaced it with art for art's sake attitude. 😊😊
Great introduction.
"The Enlightenment had failed" . . . . "let's go back to the drawing board."
Looking forward to t he next.
Thank you, Brian! I think it is going to be a fun subject to cover over the next little bit. 😊
keep up the good work, with you always in this journey.
Thank you, my friend!😊😎
I like how avant-garde seems to push the boundaries and expand the mind rather than just be a beautiful work of art. 😊 I will now spend some time going through Pinterest because this art looks really interesting! Haha
It really did change many ways in which we look at art, and even to this day, the visual arts maintain an understanding that it should represent a profound idea, if that be political, philosophical, or even just commentary on culture. You can probably find some pretty great stuff on Pinterest 😅
I always feel like I'm gearing myself up for a university class I never took when I watch your videos. LOL. Looking forward to the rest of the series as it comes out!
Hahaha, thank you so much! The start of the 20th century brought so many great authors, I may stay around this era for a while haha😅
I guess you can’t talk about modernism without connecting it back to the state of the world and the context from which it emerged, but as someone who’s brain gets on so much more with the history side than the art side it was so helpful!
Oh good! I am glad to hear! Other than the literature, for the most part, I may find the history more fascinating that a lot of the art 😅😂
My mind is stuck on the origin of the term avant-garde. It makes so much sense, but I never imagined that back in the days when I would binge watch Project Runway and they had to make avant-garde looks!
Oh yes! I know what you are talking about! Haha😅 it is still a clear endeavour to this day!😎
I didn't know a lot of these things.. I was taught in high school more about the classical period of art and not as much about more modern art. Admittedly I like earlier art works more usually but it was interesting to watch and learn about the history of modernism. Interesting to know about the influence of history on literature too.
I think, overall, I agree. I mean, it is difficult to beat the Italian Renaissance haha😅😎
Aaah another great video❤❤❤👌
Thank you so much, Jen! Hope all is well! 😊
I've been proof reading a book on the Georgian Avant Garde (1918 to 1921), focusing on the brothers Zdanevich (Kirill and Ilya). The early 20th century was an interesting time for art.
Absolutely! It was a complete overhaul, and some of what came out of it was really interesting 😊
"You can't stop what's coming...that's vanity." No Country For Old Men...seemed appropriate here.😀
I think that is very appropriate here! Haha😎
Great discussion!! We have just begun discussing this in one of my courses!!
Oh! Perfect timing! It is an interesting time in history 😎
Fantastic introduction video! I’ve never before thought of Modernism as a combination between escapism and examining purpose. Also interesting how you brought up that this change was universal. I’m looking forward to ways you’ll expand upon this in future videos! 😊
Thank you! The authors to come out during this time could have a channel dedicated to them alone. I can understand why some people may not like a lot of it, but it is so diverse in style, it would be difficult to not find something for most people.😊
Great examination on Modernism!
Thank you so much for checking it out!😊😊
How avant-garde of you to make this video! :)
Hahah it did kind of come out of nowhere 😅
Like the wander into the visual arts; great discussion as always :)
I thought a little change may be alright 😊😊
I love this! I used to love learning about art 🖼
It is a great subject to study, for sure. 😊😎
Visual arts. That was a surprise although not an unwelcome one. I had a happy paddle in The Waves this May. Oddly I think modernism may be more digestible in art now as images surround us and become ubiquitous whereas a the prose in something like The Waves remains challenging for most of us.
That is a very good point. A lot of the literature seems to be attached to that time. There are probably a few factors on why this is, other than literature being less prevalent in modern society.
great videos as always! I am not sure how I missed this video, I have notifications on it, but this time I was not notified! I apologize my friend, I try to always support your channel because I find your content thoroughly interesting and compelling! I always learn so much and you introduce me to your unique perspective and views of the written word and I love watching! Art is subjective I know, But I love that you are open and kind with how you bring your opinion to your audience.
My bell notifications rarely let me know when people are post. I am not sure why. But! I am glad you liked this, it was a really interesting time in history, for sure 😊😊
Very nice 👍
Thank you very much!😊
I'm just going to leave a duck🦆for engagement. I'll wait until next week to see if I understand more!
You know it is always good to see you here! 😊😊😎
I think I'm going to call you Professor Pae from now on!😁 Very interesting history on avant gaurd... never knew that!
Thank you so much! And maybe one day that will be a real title I will have!😊😎
@@attention5638 that would be awesome!!!😍
In my opinion technology has destroyed most Art...or A want 2 push most Art...now ....not all...but a lot just....push technology, and rely on that more than imagination, invention of New techniques , pushing boundaries, or different thought. JMO.
Great Video 👍😁👍
I agree in many, many areas. Technology has, in a lot of ways, replaced imagination. This decline in originality in art is due to a lot of things, and technological advancements, within social media and what not, has definitely contributed.
@@attention5638 👍😁👍
Interesting as always. I can't say anything modern is my cup of tea, but I'm sure you've realized that by now :) I do admit to liking Hemingway's approach to writing and am not too offended by impressionism, but make no claims otherwise.
When it comes to modernist art, I think you and I would agree on a lot. Though I do really like my experimental novelist, I do tend to gravitate toward the Hemingway types. When it comes to the other arts, I do have to admit, there is more I dislike than like. But there are the gems. I do like what the movement as a whole did for art, as I do think it pushed a lot in the right direction. 😊😎
It’s interesting to think how two artists with different styles, like Van Gogh and Hemingway can fall under the same umbrella. One is full of colorful vibrant depictions and the other is bland and straight to the point.
Totally! It is strange looking at it from the outside, but within the context of it's history, it does seem to make sense. Thank you so much for checking this out 😊😊
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Although, I might have to watch it a couple of times more to understand it fully since I am not a literature or art sutdent. Most of these concepts were just words that intellectuals used and totally went over my head. :) I am trying to learn and familiarize these concepts and thus, the timing of this video couldnt have been better.
Oh perfect! I am glad to hear. A lot of these art movements are really fascinating to look at. It is a fun journey, for sure!😊
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, despite modernism not being my favourite artistic movement. I have recently been feeling like minimalism strips the art and feeling from humanity. I also think it's the theme of 'life is futile" that I don't enjoy. Maybe modernists were just the precursor to doomers 😂 but it's understandable in the war/post war period, why these sorts of themes were aroused in so many artists.
Though it is far from my favorite artistic movement, and I do agree, the "life is futile" attitude does get a bit much at times, there is so much great literature from this time, especially from the start of the 20th century onward. That will be my main focus for a bit, and hopefully it doesn't get too down 😅😊
😂 the Peanut Gallery fellas would show up as I take a sip, yes 🗣💀🤣 I had tunnel vision going before that, though! 😆
Hahaha, I have to throw those kind of things in when possible!😂
always learn something in the University of Pae :-D i'm really struggling with mrs dalloway at the moment i have to say...
You would be the first to not struggle with that novel on a first read haha. I still do.😅
well I have nothing to say xD So i will just say GREAT JOB :D
Hahah, always good to see you, Hugo!😊😎
I always learn something new with your videos. Nice job! "...jumping into a novel like 'The Waves' by Woolf" your pun does not go unnoticed, sir. The audio sounded good. Still a Yeti... did something change? If we have good hair days, do we have good audio days?
Thank you! And yeah, I noticed that too. I turned down the background music a bit, which may be all it is. I've been thinking on getting rid of it all together. Also, I may not be using the mic properly. I tend to be terrible with things like that 😅
I think I much prefer postmodernism to modernism in almost every instance and art form.
For the most part, so do I. Minus a few great exceptions. 😎
@@attention5638 Which ones? I need to know!
Ooh I love this. I studied modernism in university but only literature/poetry and not really the visual arts. This was really fascinating. Thank you.
Given WWI's influence on the movement tied with the rise of technology and societal change, do you think we'll ever have a future equivalent in art/lit or was that a unique time in our society?
That is a really good question, and I do think we are getting something similar now. It may not be recognized at the moment, but a lot of these movements were more realized after looking back. We do seem to have a drastic device in the arts now, with traditional art being challenged with technological arts. Especially in film, photography, music and other visual arts. Literature is split in a different way, in which we have this rise of mass produced "repetition of the same" as Nietzsche would put it, in contrast with a return to traditional forms, as what I see in independent publishing, which has been on a projectory that could take over the major publishers in the near future. With the pandemic, major publishers took such a hit, while indie publishers were able to cash in. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a huge turn in the next ten to twenty years. I would be okay with that haha.
@@attention5638 I wonder what they'll call it, this era of art. Knowing us, we won't get anything as classy as modernism or post-modernism, but something like "information era" or "electronic shift" 🙄. But who knows!
I too, think small publishers are the future of books, because they're small enough to be nimble regarding marketing tactics and publication dates, but also because they're not driven solely by profit margins and can publish stories they care about. Not that good stuff doesn't come from the big five, of course, but I wonder if they'll tend to the genetic as competition gets more fierce.
I knew you were going to reference Finnegan's Wake 😂 I've given up on reading that one 🥴 Is post-modernism next?!
That is a challenge to get through, for sure! I will definitely be reaching post-modernism eventually. After going through a few works here, haha 😊😊
Wait woah you're going to be taking a look at prominent movements? That is not what I expected from this channel. Yes that's a poop joke and yes I'm a child. I'm very interested in this series as I know so very litle about art. It's always been a foreign unaccessible world to me as I've never been able to fully appreciate it with my sight being so poor. I'm interested though. if Avant Garde tries to explain things that are ineffible would My Life Inside A Kaleidoscope fall into that catagory since me trying to explain what I "see" and experience visually as a blind person is such an unexplainable concept to the fully sighted?
You go from a poop joke to a very great question that I actually have no idea how to answer, but will be thinking about all night hahah. I do know, if you were to pick up painting, it would more than likely be described as Avant-gaurd haha😅
Neat! The origins of "Avant Garde" in the context of art feels like something one seldom hears but makes all kinds of sense.
Um, is it flattering or creepy if fans look at your suspenders in lust? (asking for an id of my acquaintence)
Suspenders are SO hard to find these days, so true!
Hahaha, definitely flattery. I do like my suspenders. Haha. And it is difficult to find durable ones. These black ones are great, but usually I go through them pretty quickly haha 😅
@@MargaretPinard A good pair that lasts longer than a month is nearly impossible haha😅
@@attention5638 My mom and I tried to find a pair for my dad while on a trip and they were SOOOOOO expensive, it was unbelievable. Like, jeesh.
Would it be too much if I recommended Messenger of Truth as The Official Novel to Accompany this Video? It is such a good answer to your intro, though!!
By Winspear? I have never read it, but now really interested. I am going to the bookstore tomorrow, so I will have to look for it. But if I can pick it up, definitely! 😎😊
@@attention5638 Yes! Literally about an artist and his war experiences... again, earnestness warning, but if you're in a mood for that, it's good 😜
@@MargaretPinard I was reading about it last night, and it is definitely something I would like. Though I couldn't find it at my local used bookstore, I think I will have to order it anyway!😎
