Comment for the algorithm, already watched the first version but I'll watch this too. Crazy how that arcade Onaga fight perfectly plays off of the story mode's set-up, but because Midway seemingly couldn't let Shujinko canonically do *anything* except bring Onaga back, they couldn't let him have a proper ending in a mode that already goes far out of its way to make him look bad. Wild stuff.
So the Original video was "Best MK Story Mode", now you made this updated version "Best MK Story Mode: Champion Edition". I can't wait for the definitive version of the video: "Super Best MK Story Mode Turbo"
What I remember most about this game is that in the Netherrealm there is a large shrine-like looking building that is mysteriously inaccessible and has a path around to the back with a bunch of spikes blocking what looks like a usable door. For a long time, it was hypothesized there was some kind of secret or something back there, that this was a very well buried 'big secret'. I scoured the game and tried to look for clues on how to get back there, like maybe there was a certain time of day or week or even if it had something to do with the date. Anyway, I never found anything but it was fun to dream and experiment. I'm sure now someone has scraped over the game or used a no-clip effect to get through the spikes in order to prove there is nothing there. The single player campaign isn't exactly high art but if you can go easy on passing judgement on it I think it winds up being a fun little romp for someone who likes classic martial arts films.
Oh man, I remember all those wild rumors about Kochal and the Super-unlockables.That's the real beauty of Konquest - there's so many secrets, kameos and missable interactions packed in there that it makes you easily believe that's even more stuff waiting to be discovered.
Mortal Kombat Deception is my all time favorite Mk game. I absolutely loved the Konquest mode for this game to this day. I genuinely love that MK Deception's Konquest is getting the love it deserves for being ahead of its time and being super fun to play through. Loved the video GuileWinQuote.
Shujinko is maybe the most impressively untalented person ever written. He gets given instant mastery of any marital art he sees, then still spends years at a time to learn anything in the story.
It hurts a bit to see a re-upload since it'll absolutely kill the momentum that you were getting, but I have nothing but respect for a creator who cares more about the integrity of their content than they do about successful algorithm metrics. Anyway, one thing I find funny about Shujinko's story is that he basically saved the world by accident since if he didn't resurrect Onaga, Quan-Chi probably would've just used his army to take over the world since the deadly alliance killed everyone else that could've stopped this. No one was gonna take him down by breaking six rocks. So in a weird roundabout way Shujinko did the right thing after all.
I don't know if Shunjinko resurrected Onaga, I was led to believe that technically Reptile "revived" Onaga and therefore also relieving Blaze of his duty to protect Onaga's Dragon Egg (which Shunjinko does help him with his "memory problem". frick fracking thanks Shunjinko for bringing about Armageddon--)
Shujinko never resurrected Onaga. Blaze was brainwashed by Onaga's holy men and fought Reptile, using him as Onaga's vessel. All Shujinko did was bring Onaga power while he was dead.
I think Shujinko is awesome, and he outsmarted Onaga in the end with his own power. Also, i don't think Armageddon should be used as a legit way to drag down a character since they brought back everyone, most without any logic. And even so, throughout MK's history they keep resurrecting every villain every time, Shujinko is not that stupid when you look at the whole picture.
Exploring all the realms when I was younger was such a cool experience, something about the fog, the music, the ambiance, just gave an incredible vibe, made the areas feel so much bigger to me than they probably were.
I had the PSP version as a kid and I adored this mode. The environments had a great atmosphere and it was fun to run around and interact with all the random NPCs
Props for the update. What I don´t get is why didn´t Nightwolf just throw a tomahawk at Shujinko to cleanse his soul the fast way? Or does that only work for Animalities? Also, the human Nightwolf didn´t age a day during the whole process.
I thought RUclips was bugging out recommending me this video again until I saw your comment, GWQ! Glad Shujinko got some closure at the end of arcade mode though. I mentioned it last time, but this whole mode reeks of grand narrative adventure that had to get cut and cut and cut until it became what it is now. I'm sure it made more sense in the original writer's minds but gameplay demands and budget/time had to rearrange stuff until it became the current goofy adventure. Still pretty impressive what they were able to put together. Can't believe they made an entire open world adventure game together with a fighter at the same time, just wild to imagine on the production side.
Deception(and even moreso, It's Konquest) is actually an unfinished game, Multiple side quests dead end with some items having no purpose in the game, Notably it was originally meant to include some form of time travel element to it, before it got scrapped.
I wouldn’t call him an idiot. Onaga chose him because he he was a kid and kids are easily impressionable and easily manipulated. And Shujinko’s belief in his mission where he thought he was doing good and in the service of the Elder Gods was further heightened and reinforced due to him obtaining the ability to copy move sets as well as the victories he’s had throughout the life. When Damashi revealed himself as Onaga, his belief in his mission was crushed. But I wonder how bad it must’ve felt realizing that his life was a lie. Currently, in MK1 (2023), Onaga got reduced to and is implied to have become some wild beast chained somewhere underneath a mountain that General Shao and Reiko must tame in order to conquer Outworld. Rather than the manipulative and deceptive former Kahn of Outworld he was meant to be but I guess through Liu Kang’s meddling, had nerfed him as he considered him a malefactor that was a threat to his vision for the new timeline.
I do love that this 1 story mode implies that shujinko is at fault for everything bad that happens in the 3 3D era mortal kombats, and now he is apparently about to come back in the new era too
Year 01 is the first year of Shujinko's journey. 5 years pass, and we're in year 06. If he was 12, he'd be 17 now. Next time skip puts him at 27 in year 16. Then Nightwolf's spiritual quest happens, leading to year 27, adding 9 years on him, dropping Shujinko at 36. That is a very elderly looking 36 year old. Then we get the final time skip, in jail for 20 years, leaving our "hero" at 56 years old.
Agreed. This is the greatest story mode in MKs history. It’s saddening that NRS haven’t brought this mode back in any of their subsequent games considering the evolution of technology they’ve have access to compared to 20 years ago.
I'm so happy someone covered this. I think about this game all the time, the atmosphere was unlike any game I'd played. I probably played through the first hour 100 times before getting stuck and restarting.
I remember my cousins and I were playing a game where we describe videogame plots as bad as possible and guess what game it is my favorites were " man with mommy issues penetrates brother for his inheritance" "guy gets lightning powers but in trade can't wash his ass" "mail man gets shot in the head gone postal " and finally the way my cousin describe mk deceptions conquest "dragon grooms child into finding his Funko pops"
It's mortal Monday!! Konquest looks really fun. I love how fast you can run and the feedback of punching strangers looks very satisfying. Midway games definitely made art in the same way a lot of b movies are art.
MK deception was my first introduction to the franchise i remember playing it on my play station portable. I remembered i was fond AF with the game i didn't really understand the story when i was a kid all i remember is an old man that goes to different worlds and cool deaths. i really blanked out the actually storyline in my mind till i watched this video. nostalgia hitting hard
It's still the best Single Player/ Story Mode ever made... and the only time something similar has been attempted was "World Tour" ... 19 YEARS latter... I'm fed up of the "Cinematic Story Modes" we've been having since MK vs DC.
I personally prefer Armageddon's Konquest a little more, but I can't deny that outside of the amazingly huge levels of stupidity Deception's Konquest mode has, it's still a lot of fun, especially for the average MK fan to expand stuff on the lore, exploring stuff that otherwise gets mention-only, or just overall a different point of view in the universe. I swear MK has NEVER been a good fighting game, and I mean it as a competitive player (MK4 rules, and I will keep mentioning it), but Midway devs seriously showcased they are amazing putting together some good beat'em ups, the previously mentioned Konquests and especially Shaolin Monks, to this day I'm so sad the Scorpion/Sub-Zero sequel was cancelled, and I wish that project comes someday... What a nostalgia trip this video was, I remember doing this as a 6-year-old who barely had any real English knowledge, and twisting the lore even more with what I could understand, fun times.
Uhhmmm... I think I need to point out that the reason why he trained with the lin kuei is because they would need people that they can trust and someone that is capable to defend the artifact so they give him some training. Its not shujink who insist to learning, it was them.
MK actually had a really good mythology and lore. Sure it was goofy but there were so many interesting concepts there. I don't really care for the multiverse comic book stuff in MK12, and I hope they settle down and try to create a fun single world again in 13
Although the story was so stupid, voice acting was dumb and cliche, and the fact that so many decision Shujinko made didn't make any sense, but it was a great mode which gave us access to all the realms each with its unique atmosphere and so much to do and find, I wish they can do the same mode again in future Mortal Kombat games with today's technology, for me it's super nostalgic to watch, thanks for this great video it brought back memories!
I still, to this day, wish for MK to go back to what it was back in the Midway days; not only because of the content (because MKD Konquest mode is easily the best story mode of MK) but the whole vibe of a more creepy and satanic MK will always be better than whatever multiverse super hero bs NRS/WB Games are trying now
Glad to see someone talking about this. The konquest mode is amazing and silly as hell. But I had more fun with it than any of the modern story modes that started with MK Vs. DC. I love how the story hinges on him being naive. If he wasn’t a naive kid when the plot started then the world would’ve been screwed. Hahaha Shujinko is finally starting to get some respect again in MK1. Even if he’s basically an NPC.
You know how Deception Scorpion kameo-ed in Drawn Together? If you didn't, well it happened but point is, I would've loved to see an episode of Xavier Renegade Angel where Xavier met Shujinko and Damashi.
THIS story mode is what made me a huge fan of MK to this day. It was awesome seeing this big behind-the-scenes adventure that tied the games I played in the past together, which is why I believe there were so many time skips, because Shujinko's story started even before the first game but they had to get the player up to the story point of that current game without him interfering with the cannon up to that point. It would be awesome if they made a Shaolin Monks 2 with a story similar to this. Imagine how awesome it would be to go through the Realms as two customizable characters learning the ways of various characters throughout the series. With multiple timelines now being a thing, there are all kinds of interesting places throughout the MK history that could be used as set pieces. They could even get away with having both players being a Shujinko from a different timeline working together. As an aside, for some reason one of my most favorite moments in this mode was returning Ashrah's sword to her after seeing her drop it in her ending. It guess it just made me feel even more connected to the story when I could influence the very endings themselves for other characters.
The idea of the story mode encompassing a life long journey that turns out to be all a plot by an immortal being is actually really cool, just the excecution doesn't make much sense.
The image of Xavier slowly aperring during the havik dialogue freaking killed me, not gonna lie, I cannot play this game anymore without seeing sujinko as a alternate universe Xavier
These games are fantastic, easily my three favorite fighters of all time, and proof that focusing only on the competitive side of fighting game fandom causes greats to be overlooked. This is one of my favorite video game stories I've ever experienced, an the Konquest mode itself is fantastic. I love this game, and Shujinko is one of my favorite protagonists of all time. This is the respect this game deserves.
Onaga not being pressed about the timeline makes sense when you consider that he had many people going about the Realms to complete the quest. Shujinko wasn't his only and probably not even his best bet of winning, just the one that happened to pan out for him.
Onaga had been dead for most of the time that jinko was out gathering the kamidogu for him which is why he needed jinko to collect them in the first place.
Having seen this the first time and then the reupload, yeah: this one is honestly a better version. Like Deception (though I played the PSP version, which does have extra stuff unlocked from the start, and some bugs like I think the Tanya Tutorial is somewhat impossible to complete due to one of her juggles, unless I just suck at the toming of it) was one of yhose games that I tried after my first break with MK since I didn't have a system that could play the games, and whenbI tried Konquest Mode, the game had stuff that basically tied into the main arcade mode, and even if he does show up in Armaggedon, the canonical event of Deception was that Shujinko, gathering all the knowledge he has accumulated from his years of training, managed to beat Onaga and prevented the awakening of the One Being. It's just unfortunate that when you first have Shujinko, you need to unlock all of his special moves, so the intention was that Shujinko would be one of the last characters you would use in Arcade Mode - and that's saying something, because my favorite character in that game aside from Mileena, Sub, and I want to say Kira (honestly a lot of this roster I really like) was Hotaru, and he barely has any special moves.
I can't believe Cassie Cage killed Shujinko. She also killed Shinnok. She must be a very powerful, mortal, teenager that blows bubbles, and takes selfies. kills Shinnok. A Big face palm, and kick in the nuts from NRS to the OG fans.

Wild stuff.
At least his Arcade mode ending is canonical IIRC.
Thank you for watching 🙇🏼
Deja Vu, i have been in this place before
Must've been a timeskip
Got stuck in the orange water
Konquest mode is basically what a 2000s mortal kombat shonen anime would look like
Shujinko is maybe the most impressively untalented person ever written. He gets given instant mastery of any marital art he sees, then still spends years at a time to learn anything in the story.
Bad luck with spouses I guess
I didn't think about it like that, but you're probably right 🤔
Even though Blaze comes in and messes up everything anyways lol
I don't know if Shunjinko resurrected Onaga, I was led to believe that technically Reptile "revived" Onaga and therefore also relieving Blaze of his duty to protect Onaga's Dragon Egg (which Shunjinko does help him with his "memory problem". frick fracking thanks Shunjinko for bringing about Armageddon--)
Shujinko never resurrected Onaga. Blaze was brainwashed by Onaga's holy men and fought Reptile, using him as Onaga's vessel. All Shujinko did was bring Onaga power while he was dead.
Deception’s Konquest was lightning in a bottle I don’t think we’ll ever see anything as immersive again in Mortal Kombat
ill gladly watch this again, i eat my delicious 3d era slop with a grin
Mom says it's my turn to walk in the orange timey wimey water.

I have seen call-backs to the Renegade Angel two times more this week than I'd've expected, and that is fine.
I genuinely believe that the only way you hate Shujinko is if you've never played Deception
To add something to this
Raiden's arcade ending shows that all of the Konquest events happened and after that Raiden kills Shujinko
I retroactively love the 3d games now. I'd love a remaster compilation on current gen
13:10 the dialogue and the crude 3d animation really does feel like a joke from xavier renegade angel 😂😂
Shujinko's Bizarre Adventure
Except Midway games are unironically high art
that Monster guy was supposed to be an alt skin for Scorpion but they made him his own character for some reason
Again MK Deception is one the best PS2 games ever. Playing Konquest mode is very memorable to me. Just how goofy it is.
As one of the biggest Shujinko fans out there, I'm glad you made a video on him.
I just wanna say i really enjoy the thumbnail you made for this video
MK deception was my first introduction to the franchise i remember playing it on my play station portable. I remembered i was fond AF with the game i didn't really understand the story when i was a kid all i remember is an old man that goes to different worlds and cool deaths. i really blanked out the actually storyline in my mind till i watched this video. nostalgia hitting hard
Shunjinko is a Forrest Gump of Mortal Kombat
It's still the best Single Player/ Story Mode ever made... and the only time something similar has been attempted was "World Tour" ... 19 YEARS latter...
I'm fed up of the "Cinematic Story Modes" we've been having since MK vs DC.
Nah MK Shaolin Monks is the greatest Mk story mode game
Gonna watch it again and give it another thumbs up, thanks for the edits Guile
This is basically PS2 World Tour, way ahead of it’s time
Better than the sf6 world tour.
I've actually never been thru Armageddon's Konquest mode fully...will need to change that soon!
Shujinko is the Forrest Gump of the Mortal Kombat universe.
Uhhmmm... I think I need to point out that the reason why he trained with the lin kuei is because they would need people that they can trust and someone that is capable to defend the artifact so they give him some training. Its not shujink who insist to learning, it was them.
seeing this now, in the new timeline where both Shujinko and Hanzo are just boys... their journeys may still cross each other's paths 💀
MK actually had a really good mythology and lore. Sure it was goofy but there were so many interesting concepts there. I don't really care for the multiverse comic book stuff in MK12, and I hope they settle down and try to create a fun single world again in 13
MrGSTAR321 has an amazing decade old longplay of Konquest, well worth the watch
and somehow we avoided mentioning that this game has the best alternate game modes in fighting game history. Who up for some fuckin CHESS KOMBAT
I still, to this day, wish for MK to go back to what it was back in the Midway days; not only because of the content (because MKD Konquest mode is easily the best story mode of MK) but the whole vibe of a more creepy and satanic MK will always be better than whatever multiverse super hero bs NRS/WB Games are trying now
the 3d era was so fucking amazing
Gotta respect someone who'll take the algorithm hit to get things right
I'm a big fan of deception's konquest i was shocked that they didn't bring it back in MK1 i hope it returns sometime
This is a great overview of this mode and story. I love how enthusiastic you are about the stupidity.
Hahaha
Shujinko is finally starting to get some respect again in MK1. Even if he’s basically an NPC.
My favorite thing about 13:18 is Havik basically responds by saying “oh no, I totally was also trying to kill you”
when we were kids this game and halo were everything to me lol
Oh cool he can actually do it. Yeah I don’t blame you for missing that and then feeling like you need to edit and reup. Good as always GWQ.
I'm actually glad I watched this video and I now know who shujinko is and honestly in my opinion he's a very underrated character in all honesty.
You know how Deception Scorpion kameo-ed in Drawn Together? If you didn't, well it happened but point is, I would've loved to see an episode of Xavier Renegade Angel where Xavier met Shujinko and Damashi.
all native americans do tae kwon do
THIS story mode is what made me a huge fan of MK to this day.
Its wild that Raiden orders Cassie Cage to kill Shujinko in MK X. He doesnt even tell her his name, just says he *might* be Shang Tsung reborn ☠
The idea of the story mode encompassing a life long journey that turns out to be all a plot by an immortal being is actually really cool, just the excecution doesn't make much sense.
I always loved Shujinko man he's just so funny the guy doesn't know anything and doesn't ask questions he just is on a quest literally any quest😂
Y'know inspite of his jobbing and how stupid he is I've always really liked shujinko. Really glad he's in MK1 even if he's just a kameo.
The image of Xavier slowly aperring during the havik dialogue freaking killed me, not gonna lie, I cannot play this game anymore without seeing sujinko as a alternate universe Xavier
I'm no MK fan but I'll watch this vid again because it was really good
Thank you for watching 🙇🏼🙇🏼🙇🏼
It looks like he's coming back soo, the entire Kung Lao ending was based on Shujinko!
I think "Monster" was actually Onaga or his servant, but he realized he was not powerful enough to defeat Shujinko
Monster properly does work for Onaga. A character to prove to Onaga, Shujinko is worthy to help him in his question for kamidogu's.
Ive never seen this much love for such an arguably ass era this shit is so fire
Man I need shujinko playable in mk1, his gimmick has so much potential
I love the Xavier renegade angel cameo
This is one of those things Soul Calibur lacked. While it did have its own story modes or conquest variants it was never on a level like this.
Wow my brain just unlocked the memory of the Soul Calibur beat em up I never ended up playing.
Onaga had been dead for most of the time that jinko was out gathering the kamidogu for him which is why he needed jinko to collect them in the first place.
Hope you're willing to talk about Armadeggon next, I already liked the first version so, once again, good video.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on Konquest story mode and have watched this a couple times.
This means a lot, thanks!!!
i love 3d mk too, they're fun even though there's a lot of jank
Konquest mode was like my favorite. Something about the fact that he gets older is cool.
Ah a man of culture playing the GameCube version which Is goated
13:10 I see you're a man of fine culture.
Shujinko should not be allowed near big red buttons.
MK deception story mode is great, to be honest elements of SF6 world tour reminds me of deception.
it was that ahead of its time i guess haha
Fitting Q-Sound usage for MK!
