  • I wanted to bring you this issue that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently launched. They opened an investigation into certain Honda Insights and Passports following several complaints of phantom braking incidents. The organization is currently seeking more information regarding possible unintended activation of the brakes.
The investigation, launched March 7, focuses on Insights and Passports built from 2019 through 2022. A document from the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) states that 46 complaints have been received regarding the system, alleging the brakes were applied unexpectedly with no clear obstruction to set them off. Of those instances, three resulted in either a crash or fire, and two resulted in reported injuries. The document lists an estimate of 250,712 vehicles as part of the investigation.
It's important to note that this is not a recall, but a preliminary investigation into a potential problem. A Honda spokesperson provided the following comment when contacted by Motor1:
“Honda is committed to safety. We are aware that the NHTSA has initiated a Preliminary Evaluation, their first level of investigation, regarding a limited number of consumer reports of inadvertent activation of the Automatic Emergency Braking system. Honda has already been in communication with the agency on this topic and will cooperate with the NHTSA through the investigation process, while continuing our own internal review of the available information.”
Beyond unintended activation of the brakes, other parameters such as speeds, locations, or whether cruise control was active are unknown. Additionally, there's no information as to why the Passport and Insight are singled out versus other Honda models equipped with automatic emergency braking. If more information becomes available, we'll jump in with an update.

My 2022 accord has done that twice. On Friday a car was two lanes over to my right. My car went from 70 mph down to 45 by automatically braking.

This happened to my 2018 Accord 1.5T Sport. I don't have this car anymore but did get the 2020 Accord Touring and that one seemed to be fine. Now I won't even have an Acura or Honda anymore at this time. They need to figure and fix all these issues that they be having recently. They sure don't make them like how they use to. The 90s and early 2000s Honda and Acura were pure gold imo.

my 2018 accord did this with my entire family in the car. Thankfully no one was behind us when it phantom braked. I manually turned off those safety features every time I started the car after that.

Glad to hear you were safe. I agree. I would turn these off too. The technology is still finicky.

Thanks @@HondaJon ! I had big plans for the car. It's what led me to your channel. After that incident and a few other things, I sold it. I went with less tech and more space. 17 Odyssey. Safety is priority now.

Can’t go wrong with that. We had an odyssey before. It definitely has the space and ease of use. They are great vehicles. 👊🏼

My 2023 Pilot did this a few times but always on the same stretch of road. I discovered that it was because of the road construction and the lane being diverted to the shoulder. It would do it when you would cross the solid white line marking the side of the road.

I turn those features every time in my TLX. They are so annoying, IMO.

My car has done this its a 2024 accord ex 1.5t, everytime i turn the car on i take the time to disable cmbs, its really inconvenient that it auto reenables itself. I didnt know we could complain directly to nhtsa so i may just do that. I know how to drive and how to brake, so the few times it slammed on the brakes it was alarming and came to a complete stop. And it it took all control away from me. In the split second it happened i even tapped the gas gently to try to cancel it. Or to brake softer and i felt the pedal go full force by itself. Some jeep braked last second in front of me but i was paying attention, and would have braked in time easily by myself. From what i can tell. Whatever system they have processing is too slow. It takes in data too slow, it needs to be 4 to 8 times faster than what it is so it can have enough time to deduce a possible crash. Right now it is too slow and assumes the worst, that a crash will happen and it must brake. It’s too slow and too extreme.

Hi Honda Jon. This happened to me too (Acura ILX 2020).
I think the radar is set at too wide angle and even when I pass other cars is getting crazy. This system is made for driving and texting idiots!
... that's why I think no one should get drivers license unles is on a car with manual transmission...

My 2021 TLX has done this after vehicles in front turn. No one will be in front, and it will beep and slam on brakes.

A simple problem that could lead to a fatal accident, yet car companies are racing ahead with the development of self-driving vehicles. I will never get a self-driving car or get into one. Enough with the technology advances, just make a safe car for my family.

Hey Honda Jon my 2022 Odyssey has done it a hand full of times and it literally feels like whiplash. It’s horrible. I think they call it phantom braking.

Note my wife ask why I put the brakes on so hard. My 2020 MDX does the same thing. It will apply the brakes on by it self and has short stops.
