- AWD TEST: Honda Pilot 2016 in snow and ice
We tested the new AWD of the Honda Pilot 2016! Quite impressive since it was icy all over the place! The truck apply traction to the wheel that grip in a fraction of time. But it work better in SAND mode since the snow mode remove a lot of acceleration power to go up icy hill.

And that my friends, is how a real world test drive is done!
My hats off to you!
I absolutely love that color. It looks black at first, but as you walk up to it it's actually a deep emerald green, just beautiful.
That's the one I have its a darkngreen
The best snow ice test I seen so far
Loved the vid. That thing sounds amazing. Almost spit out my coffee when you broke through the ice.
thanks! next one: Honda Ridgeline!
Thomas Place surprised the hell out of me too lol
We bought a 19 exl awd and it finally snowed. I took it out and was very happy with its performance!! I have a 02 f150 4wd that does not preform as good in the snow. The pilot is a beast on the snow! It’s a great in the snow and a family hauler! Would definitely recommend. I can’t wait for my snow tires! Only draw back is you need to turn off the auto collision sensor it nearly wrecked me. When it snowed the lines where covered and it braked me when there was no danger luckily I didn’t lose control. So now I disable it when I drive.
Excellent test of the VTM-4 AWD. I think it's an excellent system. Snow mode is great for traction, but I think sand mode is the most capable for most terrains.
Dang that thing accelerates like a beast
Zero to 60 in 6.9, I think on dry road. Not bad for an N/A 3.5 V6. These J-35 engines pull like a rocket ship in the low end for an SUV type vehicle.
@@scdevon is it still N/A? I thought they went GDI for all their engines.
@@FMF5517 It is GDI and Naturally Aspirated together. Gasoline Direct Injection can be on an N/A engine or a forced induction engine.
I love mine!
this is the kind of car review I want to see
damn this shits fast for its size
Not really, Ford Explorer, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Jeep Grand Cherokee are faster...
Eugene Chao yea it is my parents own this SUV and damn it's fast
yeah def not santa fe.. I don't trust any korean made cars including both kia and hyundai. They are just plain garbage in quality and performance, but mainly the build quality.
I talked my father in law into buying one of these after his 2010 got destroyed after the hurricane. He didn't believe me when I said these SUVs are awesome. He's a believer after watching this video lol
With all season tires on too, thats quite impresive.
"lightly used" Honda Pilot AWD for sale
lol
@@stevencheng5722 bro do you know jasmine cheng ?
@@Ecuador006 who the hell is Jasmin Cheng? Is it because my name is "Cheng"? LMFAO
Hi
I like this kind of test, are you planning do this test with the new Kia Sorento and new cx9?
Could be good see it in addition with the diagonal test.
Very impressive! 😍😍
No oratory necessary. A picture is worth a thousand words. A video is worth a google of words!
Surprisingly capable vehicle. At 3.00 I thought it got stuck for good.
can you do a diagonal test for this?
GREAT REVIEW👍
VTEC POWAAAAA
great job man thanks
I think I bought this very SUV, though what concerns me was that the salesperson said it was very lightly used by the previous owner (a grandma) and she mostly did short trips to the grocery stores and to see her doctor!
I own a 2019 Pilot LX AWD and I can attest that the AWD system is awesome. I have tested it on sand and dirt roads and the car couldn't be stopped. I've climbed steep dirt hills where I could only see the sky and it crawled up without breaking a sweat.
I also own a Subaru and I would take the Pilot AWD system over Subaru AWD with CVT any day. With the right AT tires the Pilot can go just about anywhere you want with the exception of rock crawling because the ground clearance is not that great.
TIP: just make sure to drain and fill the transmission fluid every 30k miles. The Pilot transmission doesn't hold much fluid and it tends to break down the fluid quickly. You'll know when it's time to change the fluid because the RPMs will go up and down even when maintaining the same speed on a flat road.
that green is awesome
Great video, can you please test 2016 Kia Sorento in the same conditions ? I would like to see how it performs in snow. Thanks
+minastg We only got it on tarmac for now :( have you seen it? check out: ruclips.net/video/Ail1jaVgovY/видео.html
2:56 about to pull the everymandriver with the tacoma move lol
sssmeee exactly what came to my mind instantly
sssmeee can you give me more detail about this one ? Not sure I understand
lol! man yep same thing but...I don't know if he got damage on this Runner, but our Pilote suffered from a cracked bumper and fog light :(
Dam that sucks and yea he did, he also lost a go pro there that he checks for every now and then lol. Toyota also wont loan him vehicles anymore.
Test vehicle or your vehicle? In any case this is impressive as hell, this thing is pulling around in snow/ice and that pond with no problems. Did you have winter tires on?
Please do the 2019 honda pilot exl awd offroad please!? Let’s see what the 6 speed with torque vectoring will act like! Lol
I thought I wanted the green paint until I saw this one xD Now I'm going with the blue.
I have not seen the blue, but the green was not so bad! But i like black :)
how does the vehicle handle in deep snow? like 8 inches.
У Honda (Acura) самый лучший полный привод, молодцы.
What tires are you running? Looks like Michelin cross climate 2
Is this a forest black color? I saw a hint of green
Gorgeous truck!
great video.. I am picking up my 2017 tomorrow, touring edition.
cool what color?
keep us informed on how you love it!
not bad for a city suv/family 7 seater, impressive.
you are right! :) -
correction: 8 seater.
correction: 8 seater with all trims EXCEPT the Elite; it goes down to 7 due to the 2nd row being captain's chairs.
Correction 6 seater
👏🏽👏🏽 way to go Honda, great performance.
I currently drive a 2020 Htrac AWD Hyundai Santa Fe.
And so far it does perform excellent in heavy rain on highways. Not sure what it would perform like in snow in ice yet here in Missouri 🤷🏽♂️
What size are those tires ?
What type of tires are on this pilot?
fantastic machine, especially that breaking with that awd
AWD is great, but a vehicle with WINTER TIRES is the smart thing for anyone to do. If you live in an area that has snow in the winter and you DON'T get winter tires, then you will soon learn that having winter tires will prevent you from getting into an accident in the snow. I drive a front wheel drive car with winter tires, and I see so many guys (adult men) with their fancy SUV's / Pickup trucks that skidded into the ditch, because they did not think they needed winter tires. Funny.
what winter tire are you putting on for winter?
Great color.
It really is!
That thing sounds great. What size of engine is in it... Wish it was available in Europe. And the Ridge line
David J McIntyre it has the same engine as the ridge line it’s a 3.5L v6
Can you test this vehicle on dry Loose sands? Like Dune bashing, desert driving with various heights? I want to know if this Pilot can drive in the Desert of Uae, where there is plenty dry sand, this is very challenging even for a 4x4.
Interested
I have this same car (2017)and I'm trying to figure out if I should get studs 🤔(NYC)
Rosie Fabian Winter tires should be enough in the city. It’s been pretty warm this winter anyway.
Getting the groceries with some cheap thrills lol
I'm glad that's not my pilot but then again what are test drives for!!
you got it man! :)
A good video, especially considering that there wasn't any voiceover to further explain what was seen.
+snowrocket thanks for your comments! glad you like it!
So does awd kick in automatically in this video or do you vtm lock on?
auto awd :)
How long did it take you get out of the puddle? Obviously there was some tape editing, but I am still impressed that it appeared to come out on its own. Cold and hot doesn't mix considering the oil pan no doubt got submerged with that stunt.
+glenndm1 actually, no time at all! the cameraman press the stop button too soon! But guess what... damaged was done to the lowerlip and one fog light! that ice was hard rock!
It's really tire dependent. Doesn't matter how good your awd system is if you can't get traction.
True, but I think these are more submit to show how much torque the rear wheels can get and what happens if only one wheel has traction
I doubt it's the same awd system with MDX. is it a full time all wheel drive?
+Olis Lee yep full time! with mode select!

It's time for a new car and truck, and I've been looking at just about everything: BMW, Mercedes, Acura, Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, and Ford. I'll probably end up with an Accord Touring and a Pilot Elite. Those vehicles give you the most for your money - but I'm going to miss my old Acura TL and my Toyota 4Runner.
+Zachary Zarko I have a TL 2006 dynamic 6-speed manual, sure love this car! The accord is not a bad choice if you compare it to the TL, will you take the v6? For the 4runner, it's not like the pilot :(
I would have to go with the Accord Touring with the V-6 and all the technology stuff. My old 4Runner has been the best vehicle I've ever owned, but the next SUV I get needs adaptive cruise, lane-keeping assist, rear view camera, blind spot warning, and better gas mileage.
+Zachary Zarko i love the v6! so much fun!
This is such a better buy for the money I think. If a Honda Pilot was $80,000 I think it would rival the Mercedes, Audi and BMW.
Just got 2023 Pilot Elite
On a light snow day with little ice on the road and 15mph speed, my Honda Pilot 2016 skidded off the side of the road and hit a pole. The front of my car got damaged and airbags exposed from the side and steering wheel. Your Pilot is incomparable to mine. The safety systems of my Pilot did not protect the car from the collision. How does your Pilot not slip on the ice while mine did? Thanks!
what tires where you on?
I could not remember. It came with the car.
Exactly, it came with the car. Cars don't come with winter tires. Don't blame the car, blame yourself.
This was the All Wheel Drive version too I think. Every Pilot (maybe yours) is NOT AWD
Ice and snow are 2 different animals. Awd may help some on ice with good tires but no car is great on ice and that can happen in any car
Impressive. Honda's earlier AWD systems (used in the CR-V) was almost useless. Looks like they fixed it with this new gen Pilot, even if I do hate its generic looks (like a lifted Odyssey from most angles).
+Trades46 I think the previous Pilot's AWD system was different than the CRV's. I certainly agree with you on the CRV; the CRV's AWD was one of the worst I've ever seen. It often wouldn't even provide enough torque to the rear to spin the rear wheels.
+snowrocket Honda change the system this year: Intelligent-Variable Torque ManagementTM4 (i-VTM4)TM AWD combined to a Intelligent Traction Management (ITM. it's a new Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4) AWD System and all-new selectable Intelligent Traction Management system featuring Normal, Mud, Sand, and Snow modes on the AWD models
The Pilot has never used the CR-V system. VTM4 was way more useable than the CR-W AWD.
My Element has the real time awd, and I think it's great. Mostly used in mud tho.
it has a short circuit in one of the stop lights the right
+Anton Caldwell nope that a camera Vs Led effect!
This is worth the price in my opinion
?
Can you guys do this with the 2018 Chevy traverse high country
will do but later in 2018!
Car Question Ok thank you!
What brand and model of tire were on the SUV? The tires are 80% of the job in the snow.
yep but ice can be found sometime under snow :P
answer: ruclips.net/video/uVRFthsg1Hw/видео.htmlm26s
That answer is missing the question completely and sound very condescendant.
To recap: there is the ice then the snow then the tire and the mag that hold the tire. What brand and model of tire was on the mag that was on top of the snow that is on top of the ice?
chikiebella1 the answer was in the link where you had even a close up video of the tire
Best part starts at @02:55. Can Toyota Highlander do that!
Do you have a CRV/HRV diagonal test?
+rotaxrider not for now, but will add it to the wish list.
I have a 2012 Rav4 and the Pilot's AWD system is definitively better than the Rav4's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Pilot equipped with SH-AWD (Acura's brand name)?
no, it's different. similar but different
Quyen Le Actually they just released an article and it's the same.
That's next to no snow and it has that much trouble? I have an 09' Rav4 V6 and it can handle much deeper snow than that.
How about the ice under the snow? and no your Rav4 09 won't do much in that situation. Ref: ruclips.net/video/Fkc1sP2-QuI/видео.html
That RAV4 generation sucks in the snow. The AWD system is slow to transfer power to the rear when needed. Plows in the corner for a second before the rear starts to help the front wheels. The 1999 RAV4 did so much better with the older 4wd system.
that's epic
why? :P
nice that's my next car .did u have snow tires on it
+julio.g nomzuno yes because there was a lot of ice under the snow. you will love that SUV! just the sound of acceleration and equipment is awesome!
Nice thx
M J My 2000 Subaru outback manual made it up something similar on all season tires, ended up getting winter tires anyways, better safe than sorry.
Could you have climbed that hill with factory tires?
Maybe with a lot Of Speed
With Snow tires or just standard ALL SEASON tires in this test ???
ruclips.net/video/uVRFthsg1Hw/видео.htmlm28s
check that out
that's not a snow test. I use to go through worse in a old 92 civic in the rockys. I remember going to Nelson BC from Kelowna one night. Where the snow was coming over my and I made no problem. Don't think this thing would make it lol
Zabardast
Hondo pilot for sale "Used but never abused, mint!"
Bet you didn't see that big dip in ice did you?
+Matthew Wood you got it! and the lower lip did not like that hole either!
Hahaha my 2013 limited highlander would have made no problem without much throttle too
Every1 shut up this is a real world test drive not like those punks at tfl this is the tests I want to see, abuse the hell out of it to see if really can get out of stuck maneuvers, I love how you push it to the limits, that’s how all test should be done cause that’s how I would test it in real life
Not sure what this test was for. If you want to go off-road into deeper snow, then get top of the line snow tires. Checkout Nokian. You'll be able to repeat your test with half the effort.
The test is to see how the AWD react to slippery situation and not get stuck or damage this suv.
CarQuestion did you have the snow mode on?
Nothing I couldn't do in my '86 plymouth horizon.
+PillCosby from going down that hill? :)
Never compare a plymouth with a Honda Vehicle. Honda is just too above the plymouth.
The best or nothing
Sh-awd & vtec
Acura
Turn the snow mode on
+Ryan Rock the Honda Pilot is WAY MORE reactive when in sand or mud mode! Snow mode maximize traction but also kill reaction to prevent slipping.
I prefer the Pilot van to the Odyssey van
The pilot isn't a van idiot
Garage kept Never Seen Rain or dirt price firm.
Don't be emotive! If you want to see a lot of garage queen cars or SUV's, you've got the wrong channel!
Those look like summer tires. No bueno
Cool, good car to wait.. 30k is a good price
Pasha Defragzor you can get the base lx starting at around 30k so no need to wait
Wheels R17 or R20?
20'' check that out: ruclips.net/video/uVRFthsg1Hw/видео.htmlm28s
Do you tire 245/50 R20
If you set the wheels R18 tires will have a different size.
For example: Factory equipment 245/65 R17
Possible replacement 245/60 R18
A question for you: what are your recommendations for changing tires? And are you satisfied with the tires, which is mounted on your car?
Red Tomato I am not Russian, I am Ukrainian. Can you understand this? Pindos stupid?
Nice AWD minivan.
Did any one else hear the squeaky suspension when braking?
that was the snow i believe
HONDA WILL ALWAYS BE IMPRESSIVE 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
2:51
1:33 супер ускорение 🔝🔝🔝🔥👌
The guy driving it doesn't know much about the Pilot. It has a mode just for snow. If he had put that on, then the wheels wouldn't spin and the car wouldn't slide in all directions.
the guy driving know everything about the Pilot! But you need to consider the ice under the snow.... momentum is needed! With snow mode on, the car was way to restrictive to do this climb! :)
CarQuestion Your test has no narrator, no comparison, no actual real world test . I'm not saying you are an idiot, but you played one in this video. Take a look at the more popular car reviews and compare your content with theirs and you will see your content's poor quality.
Vtm 4 lock
Switching to electric vehicles is a big mistake, internal combustion engine vehicles such as the honda pilot are powerful in the snow, yes your spending alot on gas but thats how the power comes. Electric vehicles cant be handled
That's just a dusting of snow, doesn't mean a thing. Except he can't drive.
Only smokes a brand new car buried in water past axels.. This car should be found and reviews doe damage.. Btw no he didn't mean to do that and sure felt like a dummy but still the owner of the car should have been told..
lolllll
no need to find the car, we already took care of the inspection after this visit in the pond! no damage beside a broken fog light and the lower lip craked.
That was nothing my Nissan Murano Cross Can can get through that! Heck my '08 accord coupe could do the same with proper tires. Not impressed 😒
Poor looser
A Civic with snow tires is more capable.
Первый русский!!!
Nice looking minivan
SUVivan.
But the new Pilot looks more like mini van now! :(
Acura MDX SH-AWD better
How as it even possible to have you tube video with out some gay rave music melting your brain. Or some shmuck gabbing for 20 minutes about who gives a shit stuff. Great vid, now I know how and if the new Pilot will climb my un plowed driveway. And if it will go through deep slush. Thanx will subscribe now.
Not for the dealer to test the truck. Dumb.
a Toyota corolla can do the same thing, the problem with the pilot is the same with a car. plastic bumper, you can t do everything, it s like a car
I will sell you one I have lost my guts worst ringing car I ever owned you are not driving in snow all the time
This is not a test !!!! this is abuse
I wouldn't call it abuse I will call it letting you know what Honda is made of!👍
Sometimes you have to slightly abuse things to test their abilities. No different than a heart stress test in that regard.
