Just contemplating buying an old leather flying jacket to restore and soon as I saw a guy in a flat cap, I knew the advice would be good. You didn't disappoint. Thanks Derek!
@@derekdoeschannel Going to take a look this week. Price is a steal at $20 NZ from the local vintage emporium and they have it stashed away in a quiet corner. I think no one has touched it because of the rough condition...but I love a challenge :) Will let you know exactly what it is if/when I purchase it.
It looks really good! Another cool thing you can do (if you dont mimd darkening the leather a little) is using an antique gel. It will darken the scratches and blend them in.
I am watching this because I just got an old BSA jacket that needs to be brought back to life. I have already found Recard on Amazon before I finished watching. :P
Great Video. I think yours is the only one like this. I also like and have used Pecards on my Old Leather Jackets. I like Pecard Brown Tint Conditioner also if you want to cover some of the wear. It comes in Black also. On Fadora Lounge Forum Some people use Obenauf’s LP. I researched for hours about leather care. Even though Pecards made with Food Grade Petroleum big debate if safe for leather. You found a beautiful jacket. Thank You for Posting.
Thank you, I've used both but keep coming back to Pecards Antique. I've never tried the tinted but that probably would help if you wanted an even color.
Great video and great jacket. I'm writing from Croatia, Europe and can't get products that have mentioned. Just bought old, used bomber brown jacket. First day I have clean it, and put some, not much, liquid conditioner for leather and let it dry. Since zipper has been brooken, I gave it to a tailor to replace it with new zipper. Tailor gave advice (he is biker, by the way) to "use ordinary hand cream". Please what is your opinion, regular hand cream or cream with bee wax, that I planned to use ? Thank you.
Hi and thank you for watching. Yes any hand cream will work at first, but be careful of what's in it. Your jacket will look good at first, but it might have some chemicals in it that will break down the leather over time or the stitching. I'd stick with a product made for leather. Even natural animal fat would probably work better than a processed hand cream.
Another great tutorial Derek 👍🏻 very informative and you have done a great job on the jacket 👍🏻 a product I use to clean & restore leather is RENAPUR brings leather up a treat . Cheers Terry
@@derekdoeschannel Very true. Growing up we didn't like patina, as it looked old and poor and unkept in my country, so we put the brown/black shoe paste on our shoes and sometimes even jackets. It really depends what you prefer and what the trend is, no right or wrong.
Hi, yes if you want to make a jacket darker you can use a dye to color it. Do a google search on what color leather dye you'd like. But it's non-reversible.
I didn’t mind the look of how it was before, but it drapes and fits much nicer after the conditioning! Would love to find one of these in my size. Do you do anything to sanitize or clean the liner? Last jacket I bought had an unpleasant thrift store smell I couldn’t get rid of.
Thanks. If your jacket is new, just wear it. Let the weather beat it down for a few years, then you can condition it. New Horsehide is already conditioned and oiled so nothing to do but enjoy it!

I think you'll have to re-dye it white. I think that the original white has deteriorated or had heavy sun damage. White leather is difficult to keep white.

If it's a good price you should get it. What model are you looking at?

You've done a good job with the restoration!
Thank you!
Very helpful video, I'm going to try this on my sister's jacket that's seen better days and hopefully surprise her for her birthday
Sounds great, I'm sure it will help and she'll love it.
I use saddle soap then mink oil, works very well too
Saddle soap is good, but mink oil over time will harden the leather as it breaks down.
I'm pretty sure I bought this from you. Good job with it!

Thanks. Yes that would work, but I think most people that restore a vintage leather jacket, want all those scratches and patina.

Hi Derik. Do you think there is a differene between the Regular Dressing and the one you used?
HI, I think the Antique dressing is gentler on older leather while the regular one is more suited for newer leather items.
They have them also brown and black colored, so you could use the brown and recolor it.
Yes if you don’t want the patina.

You're a stylin' dude, Derek! What kind of buffalo check flannel are you wearing? How about the casquette? New sub!
Thanks. I think it's just a jcrew thrift store pick up, the hat is from "hat people" from 15 years ago or so. Most all my stuff is thrift or vintage.
Great video as always ❤
Thank you!

@@JasonCryer turn it inside out in the sun for a little. And also put it in a plastic bag with baking soda. See if that helps

What would you use to remove heavy dirt on a lighter colored vintage leather jacket?
I'd first scrape off the dirt with putty knife, then use soapy water over and over again on a rag and wipe it down as best you can.
@@derekdoeschannel thank you!
if a white leather jacket slightly yellows in a closet is it possible to get white again? and would this help?
I think you'll have to re-dye it white. I think that the original white has deteriorated or had heavy sun damage. White leather is difficult to keep white.
What would old leather be? +10 years?
10 would be the earliest. I’d say 30+ as good leather has lots of oils in it so it can age decades.
Thank you very much! @@derekdoeschannel
That jacket is 😍
It really did come out great, better than I thought it would.
How do I get dark blue ink pen satins out of my brown jacket the same color as this one?
Probably can’t if it’s leaked ink. Maybe try restating the area with a similar color but it might just be permanently stained blue.
👌🏼
Thanks!
It's not in bad shape. Considering it's from the 30's.
No it's not bad at all. Definitely wearable.
