As physical as 1990s defenses were, they weren't all that good People like to pretend Michael Jordan would average 50 points per game in the modern NBA because of the lack of a hand-checking rule. They conveniently ignore that the elimination of hand-checking wasn't the only defensive rule change in the early 2000s. The NBA also modified the illegal defense rule, allowing teams to play hybrid man-zone scheme all over the court. That change affected post players big and small - from the likes of Shaquille O'Neal to, yes, His Airness. Defenses could now send a soft double-team at you before you even caught the ball, instead of having to wait to help under the old rules. Schemes became more sophisticated, thanks to visionaries such as Tom Thibodeau and Gregg Popovich. Teams defended areas of the floor, taking away scoring superstars' comfort zones. Moreover, teams fouled less often because they were able to prevent stars from getting to their spots and didn't have to resort to grabbing and knocking a guy on his butt. All of this would have affected Jordan. His scoring prowess was built on the foundation of his legendary ability to draw fouls, in addition to all of his other greatness, and he was the ultimate one-on-one assassin. It has become far more difficult to impose your personal will on an opponent in the modern NBA, and without that dominance, Jordan's Bulls might have come up short a time or two. Faced with increasingly complex defenses that could focus their attention on Jordan alone, His Airness would have played a lot more like LeBron - moving the ball, trusting his teammates, and shooting more 3s. And when you have to rely on others to the extent LeBron has in his career, instead of just to win championships with series-clinching shots, you're going to have failures.
The NBA made things easier for Jordan on three separate occasions But we can go back further than contemporary rule changes, as there were two seismic shifts during Jordan's time in the NBA that enabled his dominance. First, Jordan was the beneficiary of expansion - twice. In 1988 and 1989, the NBA added four teams (the Heat, Hornets, Timberwolves, and Magic), diluting the talent pool across the Association. Coupled with the decline of the Lakers and Celtics in the early '90s, Jordan marched through a league still on the rebound. Then, in 1995, the Grizzlies and Raptors came into the NBA - once again just in time for a Bulls threepeat. Never forget, though, that the 72-10 Chicago squad lost to the expansion Raptors in that 1995-96 season, because anything can happen on a given night. And right at that moment, the NBA also shortened the 3-point line to try to drive up scoring, from 22 feet in the corners and 23-9 above the break to 22 feet all the way around. How convenient for Jodan, a career 32.7 percent shooter from behind the arc who shot 50.0 percent, 42.7 percent, and 37.4 percent in three years with the shorter line - all as he played alongside the most accurate 3-point shooter in NBA history, Steve Kerr, who also had career years with the Bulls. Then again, it's not like Kerr's 3-point shooting helped Jordan win any championships, right?
Jordan never faced a truly worthy adversary LeBron James has faced the greatest players of his generation in the NBA Finals (other than Kobe Bryant, sadly). He had to beat Tim Duncan, and lost to the Big Fundamental twice. He's been defended by perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidates such as Draymond Green, Kawhi Leonard and Andre Iguodala. He took down an Oklahoma City Thunder team with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden. And, of course, he conquered the greatest regular-season team in NBA history, then prepared to beat them again after they restocked by adding KD. Who's the greatest superstar Jordan had to vanquish for a championship? Magic Johnson? That Lakers team was falling apart, and less than five months after the 1991 Finals, Johnson announced he was HIV positive and retired from the game. Clyde Drexler? Overlooked, yet not on the level of LeBron's opponents. Charles Barkley? John Stockton? Karl Malone? Count the rings - and they had chances, too, when Jordan was retired or losing in the Eastern Conference finals. He ducked Hakeem Olajuwon, was in the same conference as Shaquille O'Neal (by the way, going 1-1 against Shaq's Magic in the postseason before Orlando lowballed the Diesel and broke apart Chicago's biggest threat), and scored against guys like Jeff Hornacek and Dan Majerle in the NBA Finals. Jordan rose to every challenge, but the challengers never rose to him.
The Bulls' Finals record doesn't belong to just Michael Jordan LeBron has had more superstar help in his career, of course, but there are two key franchise factors in Jordan's favor. Phil Jackson is the obvious one, as The King has mostly had to deal with average-at-best coaches during his time in the NBA (Erik Spoelstra being the exception, although there are varied opinions on just how good of a coach Spoelstra was during LeBron's Miami tenure). Jordan, meanwhile, had the Zen Master to lead the Bulls, allowing His Airness to concentrate on being a score-first, ultra-competitive maniac who fought teammates and intimidated opponents. He also had Scottie Pippen. While Dwyane Wade is a better overall player than Pippen, Pippen's game perfectly complemented Jordan's. His defense gave MJ a respite when he needed it, and his playmaking kept the Triangle Offense flowing when Jordan preferred to dominate the ball. Really, it's unfair to harp on Jordan's perfect Finals record. The Chicago Bulls deserve credit as a franchise for what they accomplished; giving all the glory to the GOAT doesn't do that team justice.
@@luismorales-mz8ck man MJ was averaging almost 28 in his Wizard days, which was second in the league I believe, and that's 2000's with the legendary Players like T mac/ VC / AI and Kobe in their primes.. I never thought I'd see the day when there'd be skepticism about Jordan's greatness. It's truly mind-boggling. You can ask any true basketball fan who watched closely from mid '80's until today, and moreover any contemporary who played with both: Jordan was unequivocally a better basketball than Kobe (and this is no knock on Kobe). Jordan was a better one-on-one, and also clearly a better "team" player and defender. Any rationale to the contrary is dubious to say the least. The one I hear the most is, "Cuz modern ball handlers are too quick doe." This is the fallback for anybody who hasn't watched the NBA continuously for more than 10 years...the assertion that "today's NBA players" are so superior skill-wise than 20 years ago that 80's stars wouldn't be able to compete is unfounded nonsense. Even Kobe himself readily stated that the NBA was tougher in his earlier days.
@@musiciz - Jordan averaged 30ppg on 50% shooting for his career. I started with his rookie year because if the competition wouldn't have been so bad as to allow a rookie to drop 28ppg, Jordan would've averaged something more like 18-20 ppg (just an example) on something closer to 44% shooting his rookie year, and those numbers would've more than likely steadily progressed from there. That would've lowered his career numbers more than likely to somewhere around 25ppg on something closer to 45% shooting from the field, making the goat conversion a little different.
I swear his honesty is something else, not often you see a grown man say “We knew what it was with Mike” We don’t talk to him like that...it’s the ultimate admission of respect and deference
Jordan is the GOAT but idk about most competitive era. Kobe played in an era where a 50 win team was an 8th seed. Like the 2008 Carmelo/AI nuggets and the 2010 young OKC squad. 50+ win 8th seeds didnt exist back then lol

That story is one of the funniest MJ stories of all time and I hear KG tell it many times. But hearing Isiah “JR” Rider tell it, just reconfigure my perspective on how it went. Only thing left now is to see the game. We need most games to be shown with a deep dive of these stories
Best story ever! Seen this 100x still gives me chills. JR speaks very articulate. Also seems like a good man! Like JR. also the clip back and fourth with KG. It’s really the best story/ interview question ever!
Mike just did everything with style and he looked good doin it, with his beautiful J and fade-away to his iconic dunks with tongue out and all. Aesthetically every movement on the court was an artist painting his masterpiece
MJs athletic prime ended around 89-90 probably. His prime prime was the last couple years w/ the Bulls. He could slice and dice any defense that was thrown at him and there was never a Jordan stopper (1v1).
I saw J.R. in Atlanta, floor seats!! That guy is arguably one of the "purest" one on one players I've ever seen, NBA or street ball!! Fade away....silky smooth!!🔥
This shows you how stupid Kobe fans are. They happily crow about a hearsay story where Kobe messed up a guy on his own team and made him suck. Even if that was true, think about it for a second, numbskulls.

4:25 mark of video "We don't talk to Mike like that." Haaaaaaaa JR was speaking on behalf of not only his: teammates, organization, peers, but rather the entire league!! As fans being familiar with both KG & MJ you can actually visualize their faces and mannerisms as JR recounts the story. So believable. Thanks JR.
"KG didn't understand that we don't talk to Mike that!" 4:23. The worst thing that you want MJ to do is to get mad at get 50 or 60 points on you. JR knew better! KG learned that night! Lol.
Mad respect for Kobe. He was as close as you could possibly get to Mike without being Mike. But he was literally just that, a copy. He didn't have any moves that Mike didn't already do, and Mike did them all just a little bit better.
This is nostalgia speaking, he didn’t have moves that he didn’t already do. Y’all are crazy, he took all of Mike’s skill set, Jerry west, Allen Iverson, Tim hard, tmac, dirk, Hakeem, and many more, he was more skilled than mike by default, was able to take what was before him and after!
Some of you fans are so emotional about Kobe that you didnt even hear what he said. He said he give Kobe all his due, he was the best 18 year old he ever saw but prior to him joining the Lakers he served him. But when him and Kobe played Kobe worked but he was out of shape, i dont think thos are excuses. I think yall just mad because he said Mike was better which every player ever agrees with
These types of videos of former players are the icing on the cake for the LeBron vs Jordan debate. It is rather unanimous from the player perspective. On a side note, I had the pleasure of meeting J.R in Oakland one day on a whim at a gas station convenience store. We are from the same hood relatively with him being from Alameda and me from Oakland. He is a legend in the Bay along with Jason Kidd, Gary Payton and honorable mention for Brian Shaw. J.R. was a really down to Earth guy and easy to talk to. Great player.
Michael Hernandez You have no idea who Jordan was. Go listen to Steve Kerr and Phil Jackson interviews. MJ was the best. Kobe did not know how to play team ball. Just a gunner.
Ralph 328 Chauncey St. Strange how the thought of insulting Jordan when he played was unheard of. But the internet lets everyone throw out their opinion. Now I can’t say Joe Montana was the best qb or not. He played in an era where teams stayed together. His stats were good, great sometimes. But I can’t imagine people attacking Montana like they have Jordan. It’s a disrespect that when you saw Jordan play, just didn’t exist. I think you’re effort to combine him with Kobe and Westbrook (not played long enough) is not really accurate. He was his own unique player. If you look at major US Sports, while the athleticism difference is huge, the only player who truly must have carried a team almost by himself was Peyton Manning with the Colts. I knew he did a lot. But to take an every year playoff team and remove 1 player and they lose 14 games in a row out of there total 16? Even Jordan leaving did not kill the bulls like that. However, The importance of Jordan cannot be overstated and how different of a player he was. This is a joke that all these Kobe fans have jumped on here to criticize a person and played with them both and say that he’s motivated to say bad things about Kobe just because he got beat one on one. This guy was a great player for many years. Who knew the league. I don’t care of his career was getting at the end when Kobe was there. He knows Michael Jordan. He knows Kobe Bryant. He knows basketball a lot better than the rest of us. He played there with both of them. People dismissing him because he lost one on one game against Kobe Bryant? Again, Kobe was never a team player like Jordan. Never. Never could do it
chris moss don't mind him, triggered groupie man. So Kobe was a gunner who took less shots a game for his career than Jordan huh? 19 for Kobe a game, only 23 for Jordan a game lmao stfu
just watched a video where he got DESTROYED by Kobe so bad he wanted to fight everyone in the gym after the game because Kobe beat him so bad. Quotes from teammates that were there when it happened. He would talk shit to Kobe everyday in practice and one day Kobe said let's play 1 on 1 and killed him. He never played Mike 1 on 1. Playing in a game is different cuz you have more options so on offense and defense you have more to worry about.
there's no actual video of the game, maybe like a 2 second clip and we're not sure if that's the same event. However, the video he's talking about is a recap of what happened from Horace Grant and quotes from Phil Jackson and other teammates. It's essentially a recap of the events.
James Ber Well Duh. Who cares? Basketball is a team sport. Kobe never really got that. That is the biggest difference between MJ and Kobe. MJ played to win. Kobe played for Kobe. And his last 3 years were beyond embarrassing.
Seriously, he said it best. MJ is a whole different beast and you can't fade that - he said! Just watching MJ games, you can see how he almost never makes mistakes and you can feel how he is going after your jugular and how no matter who guards him, it doesn't matter. I don't think people realize how tough it was for his Bulls teams to face teams with great big men in the old rules. For exaMple, beating a team with Shaq and Penny should have been difficult, especially on paper but MJ always seemed able to overcome any challenge.
The thing that takes Kobe a notch below Jordan is his shooting %. Kobe has the most missed Field Goals in nba history. And the fact Kobe copied everything and I mean EVERYTHING about Michael. And the fact that Kobe was not able to dominate his era with the Tim Duncan’s and dirk novitzki‘ and Steve Nash’s getting in his way. Kobe only has one league MVP. And Kobe had Shaq in those 3 championship years. It was clear that Shaq was the greater power as he won all 3 Finals MVP.
The thing that set MJ apart from everything else, cannot be described in stats. It wasn't only what he did, it's how he did it and I'd like to see stats on game winning shot totals and percentages, especially in the playoffs and Finals. Or how about stats on 4th quarters and also the last 7-8 minutes or so. He had swagger. He had fully justified arrogance. Other great players mostly made sure, not to piss/set him off with talking shit to him in fear, that he would destroy them. MJ talked all kinds of shit. Counting down from 40 is one of my favorite taunts he did. Taking free throws with his eyes closed. He could fly. He could hang in a way, that made it look like, that gravity didn't quite apply to him. The tongue that signaled "you might as well get out of the way." People who played against him, calls him an assassin. I mean listen to Magic fucking Johnson talk about MJ. A man who is way up their on the goat list completely in awe of his game. Listen to Allen Iverson, another great great player, talk about MJ in an almost worshipping way. MJ 'simply' was in a league of his own. I guess you had to have watched the games live back in the day, to fully appreaciate the man's game and how he adapted, as he got older. I feel truly blessed, that I lived to see them, albeit unfortunately only on tv.
FG percentage isn’t everything, otherwise no one would talk about Harden. Kobe was a force often having to Will his teams through and bail out shot clocks. What takes him a notch down is not copying moves... they all copy/borrow. If I were knock him it would because at time he thought he was going to hit every shot and lose the system.
Damon Nevils by “will his team to win “ I think you meant “to brick his team to win”. Even in the 80s when Jordan would lose in the playoffs Jordan still shot a good percentage and made sensible shots.
sparkymike83 Jordan is the Goat! However, can’t discount Kobe just because his FG percentage isn’t as high as Jordan’s. Kobe played defense, Kobe passed well, had the will to be great, Eras are different, and the teams also
I’m surprise ppl never say Kobe is the best due to the fact that they knew he was coming out the MJ bag. However, Kobe using the MJ blueprint is a testament to MJ’s work.
Now that is what you call wisdom. Thats one of the ingredients that gets a person be remembered for generations. Then becomes legendary, then earns the word Greatness.
It's funny Kobe Fan boys didn't hear what he said. Which was he used to dominant young Kobe which was true. As he got older of course Kobe was in his prime and dominated JR

And to think of what KB did to him, talking about MJ saying he's on another level... I mean just look at it like that? This is not throwing shade. This facts man.
I would like to one day at least hear some stories about the UNLV forgotten year. The rebels lost Larry Johnson, Stacey Augman, Anderson Hunt, Greg Anthony, George Ackles & you could say Charles O'Bannon who the NCAA allowed to forfeit his signing to UNLV, lost all those great players in one year yet the following year went something like 28-2 while on probation.
Jordan never faced a truly worthy adversary
LeBron James has faced the greatest players of his generation in the NBA Finals (other than Kobe Bryant, sadly).
The Bulls' Finals record doesn't belong to just Michael Jordan
LeBron has had more superstar help in his career, of course, but there are two key franchise factors in Jordan's favor.
MJ drop many 30+ 40+ even 50 point games and was getting double teamed.. what makes you think that he won't do much better if it was a younger MJ..
I know.....as time passes we gonna see more and more of it.
QFT "Jordan was unequivocally a better basketball than Kobe" ...... Damn, all along I though both were men. ;)
Amen bro
@@ivancalkins3645 what's rookie Jordan have to do with all this? pointless
I swear his honesty is something else, not often you see a grown man say

Jordan is a joke just like you
Jordan is the GOAT but idk about most competitive era. Kobe played in an era where a 50 win team was an 8th seed. Like the 2008 Carmelo/AI nuggets and the 2010 young OKC squad. 50+ win 8th seeds didnt exist back then lol

That is so true what J R said. Both Air and Kobe (Goats)!!!
JR was a solid player back in his day. Eddie Jones was dope too as the "Swingman" !
Eddie jones had legit skills
Eddie Jones and nick da quick was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Eddie Jones, Malik Sealy, Stacey Augmon, Scottie Pippen were a few of the high level unique role players that fit in the alpha male, unique physique, muscular NBA of that era. The "Swingmen" were an awesome feature of that time. I loved Plastic Man Stacey Augmon from his time with UNLV. Great ERA.

Is cool how people from MJ era said MJ is the beast/goat. You don't talk like that to Mike. No NBA player or any other sport player is compared to Michael Jordan. You don't trash talk Jordan, if you do, be ready for what is coming.
Guys like Pierce, Ray Allen, Arrest who played MJ in his twilight said how much MJ was a beast. Look up Robert Hooray too.
JR was definitely gangsta with his game. One of my favorites to watch especially at UNLV
he smashed gtown
yeah, j.r was dope
He never play against Kobe until he played him 1on1 so how did he serve him up straight hating

While LeBron looks like a clumsy goof half the time.

When people say they played Mike in his prime, they're basically saying every year he was with the Bulls.
Mike was more crafty in 96-98. But his dominance was until 93.
90-93 Jordan was crazy dude
Never saw something like that
Killing everybody and winning chips
87-89 Jordan was a beast too but without the chips
MJs athletic prime ended around 89-90 probably. His prime prime was the last couple years w/ the Bulls. He could slice and dice any defense that was thrown at him and there was never a Jordan stopper (1v1).
That is a great MJ story and a worthy entry into the story of his legend.
Mike is a whole different thing... says many who played against him.
@ [03:11] The way he said “he’s standing right here buddy” was hilarious!
I saw J.R. in Atlanta, floor seats!!

Even if that was true, think about it for a second, numbskulls.
how is it hearsay is there was eyewitness accounts from teammates and coaches?

Mad respect for Kobe. He was as close as you could possibly get to Mike without being Mike. But he was literally just that, a copy. He didn't have any moves that Mike didn't already do, and Mike did them all just a little bit better.
This is nostalgia speaking, he didn’t have moves that he didn’t already do. Y’all are crazy, he took all of Mike’s skill set, Jerry west, Allen Iverson, Tim hard, tmac, dirk, Hakeem, and many more, he was more skilled than mike by default, was able to take what was before him and after!

MJ stories never get old
These types of videos of former players are the icing on the cake for the LeBron vs Jordan debate.
Nobody is or was even close to being as good as Jordan!!!

Why would anyone believe MJ is hyperbole? This guys was an assassin. Think Russell Westbrook and Kobe combined ,but more aggressive, clutch, deadly!
Yeah no
Michael Hernandez You have no idea who Jordan was.
Never. Never could do it
Jordan is so clutch, he had the most go-ahead baskets in the playoffs all time...he had 3 booya, wait what? Oh I was being sarcastic lol
chris moss don't mind him, triggered groupie man.
GetsugaSengan there's a video of it?? Where??
@SJPark97 /watch?v=z0VjBcneVpI enjoy!
there's no actual video of the game, maybe like a 2 second clip and we're not sure if that's the same event. However, the video he's talking about is a recap of what happened from Horace Grant and quotes from Phil Jackson and other teammates. It's essentially a recap of the events.
GetsugaSengan upload it

Seriously, he said it best. MJ is a whole different beast and you can't fade that - he said! Just watching MJ games, you can see how he almost never makes mistakes and you can feel how he is going after your jugular and how no matter who guards him, it doesn't matter. I don't think people realize how tough it was for his Bulls teams to face teams with great big men in the old rules. For exaMple, beating a team with Shaq and Penny should have been difficult, especially on paper but MJ always seemed able to overcome any challenge.
😂 Kobe still cooks his ass

I love this story, everytime I here it it's like the first time all over again.
"ok,you talkin'?!" That's when it got personal. 😆
The way kg told it was goldddddd
My-Ngz' 4-real, 4-real! 🎶
Kobe played defense, Kobe passed well, had the will to be great,
