Stormin Stove System | Cone Stove - The Best lightweight Stove in the World

- ******Since making the video I happened to mention to another youtuber about this stove system and he informed me that he had seen threads on forums relating to the fact that sadly the one man manufacturer "Stormin Norman" had passed away in Aug 2020 .
This appears to be correct as the website is no longer taking orders.*****
For the burner: Weight varies between 8g or 0.28 oz Cost £7 or 9USD just for burner
For the Pot holder: Weight for mine is 44g or 1.55 oz if you buy the set total for the cone and stove is £18 or 22USD
The main purpose of the burner is for boiling water, it is also capable of simmering, with the optional titanium Flame Reducer/ Simmer Ring. Completely spill-proof, thanks to the super absorption of the wicking material. Boil times will vary, depending on wind/ temperature and barometric pressure. Bio-ethanol or methylated spirits are our primary fuel sources in the UK, you can source higher grade ethanol and methanol if you wish to experiment with different mixtures. Controlled tests have achieved 5min 10 sec. boil time, expect 6min +/- for normal weather conditions.
Pour 20mm of alcohol fuel into the open cup of the burner.
This is the minimum amount of fuel required to boil 500ml of water. Although 20ml of fuel is required, the actual amount of fuel burned is 15-16ml.
you can ignite the burner while holding in one hand and lighting with the other.
Ignite the exposed Carbon woven fabric, place inside the windshield.
Wait 15- 25 seconds for the burner to bloom. ie. flames emitting from the jets.
Place the pot into the windshield over the centre of the burner and wait for your boil.
Boil times will vary, depending on conditions.
In a controlled environment the burner boiled 500 ml of 18.6C. water with 20 ml of bio-ethanol in 5 min 10 secs. Fuel consumed was 15.5ml. 20 ml of fuel is the minimum required to achieve enough vaporisation to force fuel through the jets consistently.
Unburned fuel, which can be saved by returning the burner to its container when sufficiently cooled, warm, but not hot. This will avoid evaporation and contamination when stored in your pot or elsewhere in your pack.
When refilling the stove, do not overfill, pour in just enough to soak the black base material without pooling.
Filling the burner to capacity, 30ml, will bring a faster boil, your fuel consumption will be slightly higher, due to thermal feedback to the stove, making it hotter and boiling the fuel faster.
This may also result in incomplete combustion, resulting in heavy sooting to your pot. Развлечения

I love my Bobcat jr stove, it basically wind proof, it fits rolled up into my 600ml pot & works with 2 other pots 900ml of a different shape that are wide not too tall for a better heating of the bottom
I have a Vargo triad using the stand & starlyte diy burner using a X titanium pot holder & they both work great without needing another “cone”
Or a TOAKS Ti windscreen to wrap around it if it’s not very windy!
Trail Designs makes something they call the caldera cone.
I used an online truncated cone calculator to get the numbers and went ahead and made my own cone out of aluminum. The source for that was a cheapo turkey pan from the supermarket that I flattened out, made a template, traced & cut it out, etc.
2 cups of tap water (50-ish degrees) boils in 3 minutes 23 seconds (rolling boil was 3,m 44s). Your results may vary, but my usual boil times are 5 to 6 minutes (I use Yellow HEET).
Very cool indeed!
do you still have the template now to share ?
I was aware of his passing....RIP Norman; selfishly - I debated too long and will now miss out on what is clearly a great product. Hope these remain in circulation and use for a long time for those who own one as a tribute to his efforts. Cheers
So sad. I unfortunately didn't reorder as I wanted more for my lads to have one each. Maybe I will try to make my own 👍
Wild Camper if you do make a video so we can copy 👍
@@Ashysand for sure!
Trail Designs caldera cone.
@@KingTesticus
Bobcat stoves actually fit inside of your pots & they’re better IMHO!!
A very clear recording and well explained and demonstrated 👍
The back drop was also cool and looked a nice camping spot👌
I look forward to your next adventure atb Taff 🤠
Thanks Taff! Fimed in Camp Alpha, not been there for ages as another person had trashed it then rebuilt it 20meters away from the original spot. May do an overnighter there soon. ATB Rob
Reminds me of the Caldera Cone System.
Very similar indeed, 👍
Entre os realmente funcionais, este foi o mais compacto que vi aqui no RUclips. Parabéns ao criador! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻😎
gracias por ver y el comentario.
bugger i didn't know that.. he was a great guy really helpful and always looking to innovate.
Sad times 😢
Absolutely love my stormin norman cone meths stove, I use with a 900ml alpkit mytimug, just seen the post of his passing, such sad news
They are indeed legendary bits of kit, so sad he is gone.
great product, thanks for showing
I love it 💕
It is so simple but so effective. Having hung around with you for a good while now, I know you can be critical of gear. But I’ve never heard you say anything but good things about this kit.
And every time you use it I’m jealous. I really want one!
Good video mate.
Thumbs up.

Dan
Cheers buddy, yes I will moan about the slightest thing , but this stove is simply perfect. Thought I was going to get you one for Xmas but the old boy who makes them has passed away! So sad ATB Rob
Yeah I read the description after I commented. Poor guy.
Thought I was over my stove addiction until watching this video 😂 Hmm... interesting - lightweight, compact, simple, stable and efficient. I also own a MSR Titan Kettle and will consider purchasing one of these to try out. Thanks for the demo 👍
Sadly I have found out since uploading that the chap who makes them has passed away
@@WildCamper Oh no! Sorry to hear that. What a great concept and so cheap as well. Might have a go at making my own. Thanks for the heads up
@@wanderingit_ yeah, I kinda wanted to order more from him for my lads to have their own stoves when we walk together. Will try my own as well and see how that goes! ATB Rob
@@WildCamper Sounds like a good little project there and great legacy to the bloke 👍
Really like this. Thinking of getting one for my Trangia style burner. I'm hoping a small frying pan (OEX Frysta) will be held on top ok do you think?
Also does that cup come with the stove? Tks
The gent who made these has since passed away sadly. But there are others that make similar set ups. I liked this chaps as he made them made to measure for your cup/kettle/pot etc .this kettle is my msr kettle , (love it!) Pan may work but this style use the lip of the pot/kettle etc to "seal" the top from escaping heat. Likely to bend I would have thought with a pan that wasn't made specifically for it.
Thanks for your ❤ to my comment & I hope to find a “stormin normin” cone system if I’m lucky to find it, your video truly inspired me to obtain what I have because of the “packability” into the cook pots that I use & I was going to & may still diy that cone (toaks ti windscreen) cut to fit, wrap around but it’s too thin lol but I have 3 at $10-$12 each, it’ll need a pot stand
I use it in my motel room to cook my food, people are amazed at other areas where I fix my meals…Thanks!
Try this , looks like a replacement www.kickstarter.com/projects/wildsideadventures/featherlight-700-kit-ultralight-cooking-system?ref=discovery
@@WildCamper
WOW & Thanks!
Very nice option & I can purchase individual pieces, I truly like the burner it’s better quality material than my diy aluminum cap with carbon fiber cloth, able to use fry pan on 1/2 screen mode which I have to prop up my burner for flame contact, 10% discount really helps also…Thank You!
@@IAMGWH1 I would value your opinion when you get it if it is any good etc 👍
@@WildCamper
Ok I sure will very soon I’m hoping & it might work as a wood gasifier using 1/2 inverted inside my stainless steel Bobcat stove system & as a second stove for 2 pots to cook at the same time for 2 people or more complex meals
Hi is there any chance you could maybe trace the outline of the windshield on a peace of A4 so we can have it as a pdf?
Loving this pot set up, is Norman still making them Rob? Is he still alive? (Just read the comments)
Sadly not Lee, see info box under video ,ATB Rob
Ah bastardo! I'm gunna havta McGuyver something similar from aluminium! I wonder if he sold the patent ? The 'balancing of holes' also means that with an efficient burn, your drink doesn't end up with a 'meths taint' taste🤔👍. Great bit of kit.
If you look at the website it's clear that there must have been a ding dong with the ones in America as he mentions patents and other issues about selling there!
Thanks for making this video. Where can you buy these?
Sadly the chap who makes them has since passed away👍
@@WildCamper Well that's a bit inconsiderate of him 🤷🏼♂️😉. There's nothing on the market like this that splits into 2 to fit in a 900ml pot 😭
@@PhilHaddon I can't remember the manufacturer but someone mentions it in the comments on this video , Calder cone or something like that if I recall do something very similar.
aww i'm sad to hear that news,,,i have the exact same and find it great ! is yours titanium?
It's a belter for sure , I am sure I paid for ti version but was so long ago I forget! ATB Rob
If you weigh yours we can compare!
Windshield/potstand is aluminum?
Yes that's correct
Tidy. I am waiting for a manufacturer to make a 500 ml kelly kettle. It's always the wind stealing the heat. Insulation is relatively easy to overcome with a double walled jacket filled with dry vermiculite.
4 minutes is a respectable time for your gadget.
admittedly is 100ml more then you want but... wildbounds.com/products/trekker-kettle-06l?variant=37195542069415&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA7t6sBhAiEiwAsaieYtfschfSe4g8BwCtHobhVJ1hZLrVGBxVFFhpk2LWjncO9857ImC4UBoC604QAvD_BwE
Is there a link for purchase?
Best place in UK via www.seasofsolutions.com or GTC gtc.co.uk/mcmurdo-fastfind-220-plb for about £200
Battery replacement is around £130 www.sparesmarine.co.uk - cost to change is based on if you get a full service a full service which is highly recommended
Sadly Norman passed a way around a month ago.
Yes , I mentioned it in the box below the video (only found out after I did the video) so sad.atb Rob
@@WildCamper I was lucky to purchase a titanium stormin Norman stove last year. I'll guard it with my life now !
@@the_big_o such excellent bits of kit!
There is a good video for making your own cone-type wind shield here: ruclips.net/video/VerP7-aiEBw/видео.html
Sadly now Norman has passed away I am told, can you tell me thickness of titanium please,
0.12mm for the titanium cone
When compared with gas do you prefer meths. I’ve found multiday trips gas is the way to go.
Totally depends if it's a hiking job or a chill out session. If hiking gas , if the chill out then the quietness of meths 👍
Wild Camper makes sense. Thanks. Weight isn’t a big thing at the mo as I’m in a wheelchair for a bit. But I like the idea of not a lot of noise while in brewing up.
@@Ashysand definitely a completely silent affair!
