- We are installing Compadre Zoysia plugs using a Proplugger, where we previously had a tree. You can find our plugs on ncgrassplugs.com. More videos like this to come, subscribe now! Sign up for our newsletter on the website and we'll occasionally send grass plug discounts. We will send a $10 discount code when we make our zoysia plugs available.
Links are at the bottom of the page.
Installation steps:
1 - Prep the ground. Go ahead and level the soil if you can.
2 - Use the Proplugger to create your holes.
3 - Place the new plugs into the hole and step on them to increase the root to soil contact and to remove any air pockets.
4 - Fertilize and water. Continue daily watering for a couple of weeks.
We recommend using a starter fertilizer like the Yardmastery 12-12-12, Ecologel Bloomplex or N-Ext GreenePOP. We also recommend using Hydretain and N-ext RGS or CytoGro. You'll need a Proplugger to make the job easy!

Great video! Your zoysia plugs look so healthy! Looking forward to seeing this area filled in!
Thank you!
welcome back Paul! great video!
Looking forward to updates on the progress of this.
Nice my friend…
How long will it take for the Zoysia plugs to grow and cover the whole plot? How many hours of sunshine a day?
Those Compadre plugs only took a few months, with only a little afternoon shade.
I can’t find my previous comment so just want to clarify.
We just planted Zoysia plugs in Ft Worth, Tx.
We used the RGS, Hydretain and Hydroplex. I thought at the end of your video that you said to use a 10-10-10 grass starter in a couple weeks.
Is that a no on the 10-10-10 in October for us? October is usually our last fertilizing time for the rest of our lawn
Thanks!
October in my area is way too late for fertilizer. It might would be ok if you’re 6-8 weeks prior to your first frost.
Thank you!
Can you install the plugs in the fall. And also do you need to put down sand.
You can do plugs up until 30 days before your first frost.
What variation do you guys have? Am a Northern Zoysia lawn guy. I live zone 6a... I know zenith zoysia grass works real well
We have Compadre and El toro. Compadre and Zenith are practically identical, I can't see a difference.
Do you have Zoysia Plugs and do I use the same root growth and fertilizer for zoysia?
Yes and yes. There are many formulations of starter fertilizers, I recommend the Yard Mastery 12-12-12 or the GreenePop.
Our El Toro plugs should be available next week.
@@NCGrassPlugs do you have the Zenith Zoysia plugs?
Nice video. How long do you expect coverage at the spacing used? How often do you plan to apply stimulants and fertilizer to achieve coverage?
As long as these plugs are given sufficient water and nutrients, I think we'll be about filled in this year.
The stimulants like RGS should not be over applied or you'll see stunting, more is not better. You can push it with extra NPK, this is how pro growers do it. The most important thing for spreading fast is sunlight, water and NPK....and mowing multiple times a week. There is a horomone stored in the tips of the grass that suppresses growth, keep it trimmed off every couple of days.
@@NCGrassPlugs After you plug them want do you cut the plugs with to keep them trimmed - a push mower or something else?
@@markhouston4473 any kind of mower is fine but no string trimmers. You dont want to cut them shorter than 2" either. There's nothing wrong with 3" if that's what you wanted to do.
@@NCGrassPlugs How long do you plan wait to smooth up the depression and height of the plugs in relation to the ground and perhaps any unevenness in the plugs? You mentioned that you want to allow them to root in, so do you just wait a few weeks or pull lightly to see if rooted? I would think to mow over them it would be best to have it relatively smooth so as not to scalp the plugs or plull them up
@@markhouston4473 I will wait a month or so but there's no harm in adding some sand now. Just be careful not to accidentally pull up the plugs when you smooth it out.
Whats the spacing between plugs is 12" apart too far?
12” is excellent spacing
@NCGrassPlugs im planning on doing a piece i have thats 750 sqft and i ordered some empire zoysia plugs from todd valley but i also have some fescue seed from a friend that works at a golf course would that be a bad mix to toss some of that different seed with the zoysia plugs? And will it be different shades if i do that?
@@ObeyMorsa We don’t recommend mixing any other turf types with our plugs.
1 yr later did it work
Yes that spot was filled in but I power raked it out and plugged the entire front lawn with El Toro. My latest videos will show this progress.
Is El toro better than compadre?
How can I tell what type of zoysia grass exists in my lawn already?
You have to make an educated guess. Do you know if it was seeded or sodded? Do you know about how old the lawn is? What do the closest sod farms sell? Is it a medium or fine bladed zoysia?
@@NCGrassPlugs My house was built in the late 70's. Virginia Beach area. Most lawns in my neighborhood have zoysia (some have fescue). I assume it's sod and has a medium thickness blade. I bought plugs from central plugs and they seemed to match my existing zoysia but this last time I ordered they sent zenith zoysia and it seems much more lime/lighter than my existing zoysia.
@@phukyew14 I bet it’s Meyer Z52 zoysia
@@NCGrassPlugs You're the man. Even if you're wrong I still trust that you're right 🤣 thank you!
@@NCGrassPlugs I just googled Meyer Zoysia and that's spot on to my existing lawn. Thanks again! You're my go to zoysia guy! Do you guys happen to sell Meyer Zoysia or no?
