24 (!) years ago, Hideo Kojima's KCE Japan reinvented the modern video game with the legendary METAL GEAR SOLID. But what were some of the game's deeper, more local secrets and allusions we in the English-speaking West by and large simply failed to catch?
In this, part one in a new series by Futurasound Productions, we delve into the many major (yet subtle) ways MGS1 evoked or referenced Kojima games that remained as of 1998, playable only in Japan. - Игры
"We'll keep you in the stockade until you're a very old man!"
Snake: "That won't be long."
“Jesus, how many times do I have to save the world for you guys??”
MGS1 is just packed to the brim with Easter eggs and little subtle details. I've played all the way through it at least 50 times and countless unfinished runs and if you factor in Twin Snakes were talking closer to 100 times, and I still to the day discover things I never knew or picked up on. Great Video as always Boss! 👍
I hope you're happy dude. Because of your channel, I bought MGS: Ground Zeroes on Steam (already owned V), another PS2, MGS, MGS 2, and MGS 3:Subsistence. Really though, the way you paint the series' brilliance is why i just had to own them again.
It blows my mind how much of this beloved series remains untranslated.
Have you considered going over the Snake Eater commentary?
I will never forget opening up a brand new PS1, and putting in the demo disc that came in the box with a variety of demos you could play and some trailers you could watch that were promotional tools for upcoming games. The first game I selected to play was Metal Gear Solid. That was the day where life as I knew was changed forever.
I loved the context specific codec calls because for whatever reason I didn't particularly like progressing in games and having a bunch of people to call was a great distraction, being rewarded with more information or lore while I was procrastinating was a joy
I like to think the "Evil Campbell" scene is one of Snake's PTSD nightmares. Like, "what if I tried to refuse harder?" I could see Kojima including something like that in that way, though it's also metacommentary on player behavior. Skipping cutscenes, "I just wanna play" behavior, being equated to Snake being just like Big Boss in this way. It's just, it has that extreme meta nature while feeling weirdly foreshadowing despite that not being planned.
Always love discovering new rare codecs, never heard those funny cold calls before. I noticed MGS1 even uses the same font as Policenauts. That's a serious commitment to artistic continuity.
"You're a natural born soldier. You're not the 'grow old gracefully' type." - Psycho Campbell(?)
Fantastic content, Jorin. The codec in MGS1 still amazes me. I had many playthroughs where it took forever just because I wanted to hear all the codec convos. This is a great reminder of those days
for a console that could only hold so much memory, i'm impressed that konami managed to fit in all the easter eggs and conversations in an excellent, classic masterpiece.
Lol Snakes cold voice is hilarious
The Policenauts song in the beginning made me go on a wild goose chase for that theme, because that was one of my favorite tracks to play in MGO2
Gray Fox's helmet reads "TOKUGAWA HEAVY INDUSTRY"
The balls on the guy from Policenauts for smoking a cigarette inside a spacesuit.
I really enjoy this format - when I am looking for a hideo to kill time it’s often important for the elapsed time to coincide with my free time. I also like the raw content to stir up the memories.
It’s amazing how much I still regularly learn about this series despite the hundreds of hours I’ve spent playing it and reading/watching videos about it over the past 25 years.
Having all these optional recordings, messages and info is just an indication of a well designed game.
One of the facts I heard about recently: Apparently for the Japanese Exclusive PocketStation mini console (which was an accessory that was SUPPOSED to come to the US, to the point that the American version of FFVIII had instructions for a chocobo minigame on PocketStation that American players could never play) there was some sort of way to "infect" your PocketStation with FoxDie. Not sure what that entailed, but apparently it was a thing
Also, Otacon's office has a PS1 in it. In Twin Snakes the PS1 becomes a Gamecube.
Also, you know that parachute you see in MGS4 slung over the tree next to where you find the crashed Hind? Yeah, that parachute is visible in MGS1. Along one of the walls if you look with Binoculars, you can see the tree with the parachute. No hind wreckage though. Theres a Codec call if you find it.
I've replayed it so many times and there is always something else that I never knew, some dialogue that I never heard before or something hidden in a corner. That's why I will always like MGS1, it has such a unique vibe to it that even the later games couldn't exactly replicate it.
What a treat on this bitter winters day 👍
I would love more videos on this series.
The music in this vid is damn good
I think I speak from everyone when I say this but we really appreciate these videos. Your love for all things Metal Gear is palatable and its fantastic for huge fans like us. Keep going, Boss!
@1:06 I would have thought the docs starting to MGS1 is a reference to the original 1987 metal gear, as solid snake first emerges from the water to infiltrate Outer Heaven
I love the ost for policenauts and snatcher so much. Love how you implement them into your videos
Pretty casual overall, greatly enjoyed it. Hope to see more in the future!
I'd also be interested in what the original MG games lost in translation; I know character limits for Japanese vs English meant a lot of dialogue and plot had to be cut to fit.
love the idea for a new series! It is hard to believe that there is still so much to uncover in these games.
I always wondered what it would be like to be Japanese or to have played his previous games to catch all the information that Kojima was trying to convey. Thank you so much for making something that I never thought would happen into a reality. Really enjoying this series so far 👍🏻
I always thought it was weird Naomi talks about antibiotics when you catch a cold. I always wondered if it was a side effect of foxdie and the cold medicine was just placebo.
Thing is, antibiotics don't work on viruses, they kill bacteria.
Cold medicine doesn't really "cure" a cold, it helps your body, while your immune system fights the infection.
Wow I never knew about the cold codec calls, and I used to play MGS1 all the time growing up. Snake sounds so funny congested xD
Love the presentation, but a lot of these are tenuous parallels AT BEST. A steaming grate being used in the Heliport is a reference to the opening of Policenauts? Seriously?
I have to agree, there’s a lot of “links” here that are really weak. No doubt there’s plenty of references between works published by Kojima and his team, but the searching in this video is getting a bit desperate.
We’ve also no way of knowing if reusing certain things was just a simple matter of saving time or effort in building the works.
I enjoy these videos a lot, but would appreciate more substance and less speculation, I think if this was an article in a publication the editor would send it back for more work and edits.
Was waiting for a video like this for mgs
I consider MGS the best game ever made.
Im proud to own a phisical copy.
Yes! Love the MGS content great video!
keep these coming!
So Tokugawa Heavy industries like on the helmet of grey fox is a nod to policenauts? nice
I'm down for more of this series.
The history of colonel Campbell would really interest me. Is it possible that he knows more about the truth but he can't say it because zero's ai is always aware??
This is gold man
Good job boss.
Thanks jorin
The chaff grenade floaties is a call to Snow-9 from Snatcher. Both of which jams radar.
oh nice, a video on metal gear solid, for a change
in b4 orwell reference
Not many people know this but the Japanese version of metal gear had an ez gun just like snake eater and it was the mp5sd which was finally made available for mgs4
If you go to Japan buying second had retro games can be super cheap. In Japan they don’t really have a retro gaming/collecting scene like they do in the west. In part I would imagine this is why Nintendo aren’t super keen to revisit past titles. It’s a difference of mindset?
Policenauts really is a masterpiece in atmosphere and storytelling
Instant click
With that title...
A forklift truck is a poor substitute for EMPS
I feel as though there is some potential for a conspiratorial MGS 'Petscop'-esque creepy pasta. We have the technology.
Wow that Tokugawa bit made me do a double take - sounds almost exactly like a track from Front Mission 3. Was it the same composer?
Heres a secret thats been lost to the west, go play Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake best game in the series that nobody ever plays.
No seriously, just play it.
No doubt man. I think MG2 has the best soundtrack ever in an 8 bit title. We need a full on remake badly.
@@SnakeHiggins MG2 is such a badass game it dont even need a remake, just a re-release unless you have a PS2/PS3 like myself or willing to emulate it on PC kind of screwed. They released the original MG on GOG but the original MG2 on MSX never had an official English release its been Japan only for over 30 years. The more modern release on PS2/PS3 is still basically the same game but made several changes to fit in more with the Solid games.
@@MCHH-ml2qq Yeah I remember buying MGS3 Subsistence just for the MG2 English version, but personally a large part of me prefers the translated Japanse version for the original character designs. Mel Gibson Solid Snake and Sean Connery Big Boss was just too damn cool. Hell I remember bidding on a complete Japanese version of the game just to have it about a decade ago and getting outbid at the very last second.
@@SnakeHiggins yeah the only way to play the translated Japanese original is on an MSX emulator, thats how I first played it over 10 years ago and immediately became my favorite in the series even after playing through the newer MGS games several times over. I still have an original MSX copy of MG2 I picked up on ebay years ago but cost me over $500 and now they've gone up to over $1000 in price now. The real life character portraits were the best part Mel Gibson and Sean Connery in a Metal Gear game will never get old 😂.
I played it on the legacy collection on PS3 last year, replaying it on subsistence ps2, 2nd favorite mgs behind sons of liberty.
12:54 whats is this song called? It slaps.
Snake referring to grenades as pineapples is a call back to MG2:SS on MSX when the children in Zanzibar land would refer to grenades as pineapples.
I mean, "pineapple" is just a colloquial term for fragmentation grenades outside of MGS, due to the scoring on the case
@@knightshousegames ruclips.net/video/awUmGQYWs54/видео.html 1:26:25 i was referring to this.
@@__tengu__ And I in turn was referencing this:
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/MkII_07.JPG
The MK2 hand grenade from World War 2 had that characteristic scoring on it's case so that when it exploded, it maximized the amount of fragments it would break into, and that look combined with it's elongated shape makes it look like a pineapple, which is what guys started calling them. Then the term just got used to refer to all frag grenades, even though these days they do the scoring inside the case with strips of wire.
I know it was used in MG2, I'm just saying the colloquialism predates the franchise in general.
@@knightshousegames lmao
Does anybody find the briefing videos sort of creepy?
Nice
Yay!
snatchers appear in mgsv raiden mission
pls finish gta vice city 1984 video essays they were great, love mgs content too tho
👍👍
Why's snake blonde in the interrogation/ incarceration cutscene
Continuity error I guess
Why don't you do a video on Mgo 1,2,3?
For the algorithm
Me rikey
First for the algo
steam grate? Really? C'mon
practically every video this guy makes is full of grabbing similarities out of thin air, i just come watch these vids when i need a good hearty laugh
Instant like
oh man
get to the point
Wasn't a fan of this format need some more commentary far too much letting clips play.
A video essay brought to you by reddit
Secrets Lost to the West? I thought this would be secrets that were buried by translation or something. Very clickbaity.
The vid is mostly codec calls and extended footage use... This is your tablescraps smashed together into a minimum viable video.
This channel used to be good, good luck.
This channel moves further left with every video. Thanks for politicizing my favorite series 😐
