The Resident Evil 4 Remake is upon us, and it's solid but uninspired. Join Jorin in this brief video essay as we broadly tackle what worked, what didn't, and why remakes in general could be bad for the medium.

I did not like being forced to use a non upgraded version of the R9 during the minecart part, prefered the OG minecart part tbh. The Spinel were very nicely recycled, wish we could hide some accessories (I find the cat ears to be ridiculous looking)

This is exactly what they did with 2 and 3 except there was very little attempt at recreating what made their originals good. I don't like playing a game like I've never played that before in a remake. Save that for anew game. RE1 remake wasn't perfect, but it did a good job of establishing itself as the definitive version of re1, not saying o.g. doesn't have its merits as I like both games. But especially with the remaster of rEmake where they added some modern control options and an in game reload that's how a remake should be handled.

This game did not need a remake. Pus there's latency and hit detection issues with the game (which fucks with the gun balancing). Especially since RE8 was basically already a modern version of 4. And even with the improved controls playing it doesn't feel good like it did with the original. It would have been better to remake Code Veronica (and taken more liberties with it) as that would have fit in better with the gameplay designs of the other REmakes. This game just feels unnecessary.

People want to complain about action but what do you expect out of the 6th (really the 9th) installment of the series. The series was always headed in the action direction. Ever since the first game, and every subsequent game released afterward has included more guns, ammo, and action set pieces. They put so much content in re6 its honestly insane. The boss fights, minecart set-pieces, all the Gigante encounters (but especially the double Gigante room), the Krauser knife fight and the overall combat system were super intense and contributed incredibly fun/memorable action sequences. I'm also a bigger fan of horror than most, so the new Ashley section, the new Regenerator and Garrador encounters, the dungeon, and especially the new Verdugo encounter were welcome inclusions for a horror junkie. The characters, lore, overall presentation, and pacing were also incredibly well handled, and personally I intend on returning to the Remake many times before I do the original.

What I can't understand is that I haven't seen anyone else mention the terrible, inconsistent lighting and color pallete. RE2MAKE looked great, but this looks like an unfinished engine demo. And it degrades terribly. Half of the footage I've seen of this game has the brightness turned up too high, and you really see the fundamental lack of coherent visual design. Just look at the skin texture and funky, fake, halfway shadowing in the very first shot of Leon in the car.
It's a common problem when making a foray into new technologies, and I largely blame the split development of including the new(ish, and still rarely properly implemented) trend of tacking on ray tracing into the world design. It goes in two mutually exclusive directions if you try to do full ray traced lighting, as opposed to something like shadows only in I think _Rise of the Tomb Raider_ . Looking especially at the color of and texture work of Ashley makes her stick out like garrish lipstick on earth tones (just looking at the photo makes the lack of color grading or advanced focus apparent). It ruins the storybook visual style of the original for the remake not to even have a uniform visual style.

I'm inclined to agree on many levels. I expected the story to be fixed flawlessly. Unfortunately, there were a lot of inconsistencies, plot holes, and questions left behind.
The game plays 98% like the original, making it feel very dated in some ways. The voice acting was bad on many levels. The villains were very one-dimensional and forgettable this time out. Leon's character took a hit with more bad and frequently-spoken quips. His personality and appearance took a hit, too. Ashley's AI sucks like it always did, and she's equally as useless. Her girly flirtation was tiresome and ill-timed.
The animation wasn't great. The graphics weren't too hot. The dialogue sucked. Many of the cutscenes were watered down, as were several boss encounters. The entire castle portion was nerfed, too. Although the game was entertaining enough, it failed to impress me. It simply imitated its predecessor down to its outdated combat system while trying to add a darker tone that didn't match the comic tone of Leon's nonsensical quips and made him dull while making the game paradoxical. In short, it lacked the charm of the original.

When things in the original are more innovative like for example Enemy AI when it comes to "stealth"( In the remake, you can legit casually walk behind enemies or even break wooden boxes and they won't notice), breakable wooden doors, incendiary grenades for crowd stun + minimal damage, dumbed down novistador enemies(these things were terrifying as hell. They are a joke in the remake.).. etc. It puts into question whether or not the new devs made a serious genuine attempt at reimagining re4 and not simply cashing out on the success of re2r along by phoning it in with random modern game mechanics like parry and stealth that don't necessarily belong here gameplay-wise. They ended up making The last of evil 4.
A simple take i have that puts into perspective how misguided and wasted some of the designs are. Why not use the weapon position/placement in the Case as hotkey for in realtime swapping? Why not include other items as physical objects valid as such, like in Re5 & 6. Why have a seperate LOU style shortcut menu? There was also no need to downgrade Ashley by removing her healthbar altogether, by doing so they fck over their own "muh realism" approach with this remake. Mechanically the remake is a mess, it wants to live up to re4 without respecting basic sht like pacing, level-design, movement and atmosphere. Again, it's The last of evil 4: modern audience edition.

I think this is something that should be explained because "disappointing" can be a very misleading as a descriptor if you just take it as face value.
At least in this case, he's not saying this game is bad, he's saying it didn't meet the expectations he had, and it's not the first time I've heard this criticism of this remake, but as he says himself, he still had a good time with and will play more, it's not a *bad* game, it just fell shy of doing more that it could've, or the direction wasn't what it should've been, and it's just a reality that most remakes are cash grabs, cause lets face it, there's many RE games that deserved the remake treatment more than this one.
I've yet to play RE4 remake myself, only seen people play, but I can bring a close parallel myself with Elden Ring; as a veteran Fromsoft fan, I found Elden Ring disappointing as an installment because there was so many things it did very wrong which they had already done much better prior in the series, and there's certain aspects of it that could've been more as well, but I still enjoy the hell out of the game for the most part, I've replayed a crap ton.

Bad in so many ways its not even funny
    1) Run speed is reduced compared to the original
    2) Gun damage spread like the shotgun was reduced
    3) Mercenaries mode is unbelievably awful compared to the original
    4) Enemies are not instantly staggered in every area of their body ESPECIALLY during animations.
    5) You can be attacked DURING animations(I dont think I am tripping, but if I got grabbed by a ganado, another ganado or el salvador, cant attack me)
    6) Unable to perform an action like jumping over a fence WITHOUT the input showing in front of you(something that hasnt been fixed since re2 remake)
Just some things that came to mind. RE4 original better. Cant even replay remake.

The gameplay was a big win but the story took a big hit, it's more detailed and complex, and yet it feels more generic, the only improvements was Ashley actually being pleasant to be around this time and Luis having a more lasting importance to the story, which I liked, but all the villains, all of them, feel like a downgrade, I'm not talking about the monsters, I'm talking about the bosses, all of them lost something in this transition, they are much less menacing and sound way lore generic, maybe it has something to do with the direction this time, who knows...

As much as i love the gameplay and technically one of the best gameplay i play for the last decades, i cannot bring myself to love the "reimagine" of how stuff are happening in the storyline and maps. the problem with this remake are Resident Evil 4 (original) existed and i pretty much more enjoying most of the aspect of that game than the remake. i feels like new line and story are dragging too much and the new maps are mostly boring to replay compared to the original. eventhough the playtime of the remake and the OG are almost comparably the same but there are more area that being explored in the OG.
calling this remake soulless as other said i think are too far since i do believe the dev that remaking this game kinda do a great job recreating stuff that hard to immitated such as RE4 but i can personally say that i cannot give the same love as i give to the original on this one.
while the original trying to be as goofy and Edgy as possible, its kinda make senses in term of RE universe law while the remake trying to be as make senses and realistic as possibly that it kinda killing the vibe and just becoming generic horror story least for me. interm of story, Resident Evil was not really have realistic looking story but the thing that attracted me are the edginess and the weird thing that are existed on this franchise more that other horror survival games.
