  • After four years of digging, building and planting our fabulous fifth garden, RHS Garden Bridgewater is now open.
We’re hugely thankful to all of our staff, designers, gardeners, contractors, and volunteers who have helped bring our newest garden in Salford, Greater Manchester, to life and to our investors, including Salford City Council and The Peel Group.
Featuring cutting-edge design by RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal winners alongside numerous dedicated community spaces, Bridgewater will be a beacon of gardening inspiration, education and engagement in the heart of the North West.

The RHS was founded in 1804, and our core objective is to be the world’s leading gardening charity by inspiring passion and excellence in the science, art and practice of horticulture. In everything we do, we will aim to use our guiding principles, which are to: Inspire, Involve, Inform and Improve.

I'll be curious to see whether the same thing happens at Bridgewater as happened at Harlow Carr (Harrogate) which was our nearest RHS garden when we lived near Skipton.
    1) There was no concession for people aged 65+
    2) We eventually joined but subsequently cancelled our RHS membership because of repeated requests for donations - with the minimum' suggested amount starting at £50. We were pensioners so would have appreciated allowance for (1) and acknowledgement that we were fed up with (2) and didn't want endless junk mail.
Bridgewater will be nearer for me than Harlow Carr was, but I'll hang fire until I find out what concessions there are (if any) for pensioners.

This excellent video was ruined by inappropriately invasive “music” which made it difficult for me to appreciate what people were saying. Gardens don’t need high-energy noises to promote them!

I have also cancelled my membership, for the reasons below. I'm aware of the need for funds, but also the Garden magazine has become almost impossible to read, and the photographs dull, small and poor. I have explained to Head Office that one of the worst offences in the printing is being white, or red - both very basic artistic blunders.
I need to have help now, but have to pay for my companion. For disabled, elderly or unwell visitors, show gardens and shows are pitifully lacking in seating. So my last visit was sadly my last and having known the original house and garden here, for me it's "never go back".
