I feel like Scott could make this video 10 times and would have a completely different list each time.
He should go from Z-A next time lol
Yeah like every week
😂 I agree! I think that would be the same for anybody though.
haven’t watched the video, but by knowing scott, your right
Definitely
As a Texan, I am constantly offended that the OG license plate was discontinued. It had a cowboy riding a horse while looking up at a NASA shuttle! It was awesome!!
Right?? Those were gorgeous.
He is right, though. The new ones look good on every car. But I miss the pretty ones.
WAT?! As a Texan, this is the first I am hearing of this and now I am sad. Our plates are so boring lol
That plate came out in 1999, it was cool but there were plenty of versions before that so I don't think its really the OG plate.
I loved that plate! I’m from New Mexico and saw so many Texas plates and now they are so boring
That license plate could convince me to move to Texas.
As someone from New Jersey who spends a ridiculous amount of time on road trips complaining about NJ's plate compared to other states, this was validating. Literally the garden state and no flowers on our license plate? Embarrassing.
No flowers and no gardens like anywhere. I live in the less populated south jersey and it's not very garden-like, more farm-like.
I found it funny on how it looked like it was cracked in the middle (if you took a quick look)
but ofcourse for an extra fee to nj dmv you can get the many different custom plates theres so many anymore its hard to even keep track.
You're from Jersey? My condolences.
I find the New Jersey plate to be pretty clean, it’s close to uninspiring but definitely not a disaster in my opinion. I don’t have to look at it all the time though so there’s that.
As a European who went on a trip to the US at age 14 I was blown away by your plates! I didn't realize (some of) you guys had cute drawings on them. I bought the little souvenir versions from the states I visited :)
Awh that's so wholesome! I live in the states and some change every few years so it's kinda fun to keep up with which state has drastically changed their plates. In Nebraska (and I'm sure other states as well), we have special edition plates for the Omaha zoo or the migration of the sandhill cranes
in my state (Pennsylvania) we can get our college or high school logo on our plates, and we also have special edition wildlife and train license plates that look completely different
yes in europe licence plates are so shit honestly
@@spoiledmilk8888 True! Also, some states have custom plates. Illinois has 67 different license plates. Some reserved for trucks, disabilities, etcs.; while others are for fun like pet lovers, Chicago sport lovers, University of Illinois, etc.
I love EU plates, it’s just something about them
As a Californian my excuse for having a “boring” license plate is that California has a lot of different types of geography (like mountains, beaches, valleys, deserts, and lots of wildlife) in it so it’s pretty hard to just choose one thing to make a design out of. But, I still wish we had a more interesting license plate 😢
Tbh I prefer the more “boring” plates, they’re functional as identification tags and they don’t clash as much with a car’s design.
As a native Californian, i think there should've been at least one more option for the License plate on the site that he went to. In my opinion, the design I would've picked would've been the one that was released in 2006 to celebrate the state's 150th anniversary. If not that plate, one of the retro plates from the late 80s early 90s with the cursive script. I've seen some of the vanity plates that have the golden Poppy or an image of the Golden Gate Bridge 🌉 or the one with palm trees on the left side and an image of a setting ☀️ going down over the ocean on the bottom right. A quick Google search 🔍 would bring it up.
That's the case for many states though...
I actually really like the cursive. I'm from illinois
@@danielleporter1829I have the sunset with the palm trees plate on my car, and, I feel like *that* should be the default one as that’s what a lot of people think of when they hear “California”.
as a life-long Californian, when I first realized that other states had actual designs on their license plates, my mind was blown! and tbh at first I was like "why do they bother? it's just a license plate"
California and Texas are the only states that get a pass for having "boring" plates, IMO. Like Scott said, California plates are just so iconic! Something about the red cursive and blue characters on a white background just does something for me, lol. I instantly imagine myself back in Santa Monica or somethin whenever I see one.
As for the rest of the states, you can def go overboard with design on a plate. It's all about finding that middle ground between detail and simplicity, like Utah did
I mean there are special plates you can get. That plate with the killer whale in it is pretty dope.
We can get custom plates here we just have to pay a fee. And none of them are too great tbh. But yeah we do have a pretty iconic plate, just sucks it has to be boring lol
Same from mass
There is another California license plate called the California Arts Plate, it looks so good, very California-like theme, and proceeds go to art programs
Always love when someone is introduced to the NC-OH first in flight drama. To those who don't know: The Wright Brothers were from Ohio and built the flyer there but first tested it and achieved flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. North Carolina is pretty proud of being the place where powered flight was first performed and likes bragging about it, but Ohio feels that that's not the important detail of the first flight.
I'm just saying you don't see the moon claiming credit for Neil Armstrong *cough*alsofromohio*... The Wright brothers lived in Ohio, did all of their development there, and after the first successful flight came back and refined the design and did full circuit flights back home just outside of Dayton.
@@danbert8 But nobody remembers where Neil Armstrong was born (except people from that same state), they remember the exciting thing he did and where he did it lol. *cough*fromNC* Take pity on us, our license plate is a fender bender.
@@ImmortalBroken I’m from Ohio and didn’t even know Neil Armstrong is Ohian
Nobody likes Ohio, though (jk). They are trying to pass Florida as the meme state...which simply won't happen bc Florida folks are wild, lol. The flight took place in N.C. so yes, they are first in flight....and Ohio makes sense as the birthplace. Hence, that's where they are from. So I never understood the confusion or made-up beef... and I grew up in the OBX, we all knew they're from Ohio...its written and mentioned several times at their museum in Kitty Hawk. I don't even live in N.C. any more, though, so maybe people have changed....lol
@@ImmortalBrokenThat’s because the whole mission was about *going to* the moon. Nobody celebrated when the Wright Brother’s first crossed the border into North Carolina. They cheered when the Ohioans and their invention took flight. While I generally dislike the concepts of location-based identity because of it’s inclination to nationalism, North Carolina has barely a leg to stand on in this stupid debate. And Ohio doesn’t have a great argument either. Idk, borders and tribalism is stupid, but the comparison to the moon landing is kinda stretching it
The Wright brothers were from Ohio, and built the Wright Flyer in Ohio. The Wright Brothers Museum is in Ohio. The first flight occurred in Kitty Hawk, NC. The Wright Brothers Memorial is in North Carolina.
And the argument between NC and Ohio regarding which gets to claim the Wright brothers' success is as contentious as Scott assumes.
Ah, thanks for this. I'll also point out that GE Aerospace is headquartered in Ohio, so lots of aircraft engines are "born" here as well. :)
Honestly though, if you think about it, it's kinda insane NC wants to claim the Wright brothers just because the first flight took place there, when the entire idea was born out of wanting to get TF out of Ohio like every other normal person who is born in Ohio. As someone born in Ohio, who has since fled that hellhole. Beautiful state land wise, just a lot of crazy bigots and ass backward police that literally get away with crimes constantly. Most people who have sense wanna blast off outta Ohio since childhood.
If ohio was so great then the first flight would be in ohio.
First in flight is North Carolina. It happened in NC so it’s NC’s title.
Louisianan here! “Intimidating” but also “fun and inviting” is an excellent description of the entire state. Thanks for the shoutout 👍
I was going to comment that lol Louisiana is intimidating with food but we are fun and inviting in new Orleans and some other parts !!
The biggest problem with the DC license plate is that most license plate covers cover up the "End" so it ends up just reading "Taxation without representation"
Considering it's DC it might be purposeful.
At one point, the District Of Columbia plates actually _did_ say "Taxation Without Representation" (there was no "End")!
That makes it better imo hahahaha
The rage I felt at Scott almost calling Maine’s plate “uninspired” was unbridled. I wouldn’t call it pure art, but it’s more aesthetic than a blank square. I didn’t think I’d get this heated but here we are
STRONG agree
I agree!!
Maine’s is gorgeous, pure art in my opinion
As a fellow Nebraskan I am also asking “Who is this man?” Although, I am very proud that the man granted us the prize of pure art.
The design is inspired by a mosaic on the floor of the State Capitol building called “the Genius of Creative Energy.” It depicts a Roman character harnessing earth, air, wind and fire.
@@dull_scythe so it’s the avatar
I’m sorry you live in Nebraska
@@captainclutch3818 we Nebraskans invented Kool Aid so it's not all bad 🤷♀️
I'm also Nebraskan and when I first saw it I thought it was a sexy version of the golden sower on the top of the capitol building 😂
Let me fill you in: a few years back they updated the Iowa license plate design to what it is now. We don't like it. The old design was cleaner. But now you can also get plain black plates, and although it's boring, some people prefer it to the mess of the new standard plates.
My buddy lives in Iowa
And it sucks even more because we came so close to getting something that looked so much better, like there were three options and one looked pretty cool and the other two were bland flat colors (one of them being this one), pretty tragic if you ask me
The old Iowa plate was also awful, I'm shocked the state didn't just pull the plug and go to the black plates as the standard.
Don’t forget the Hawkeyes plates 😅
Na what? The black is the best, current is 2nd, and the old one is last
15:47 that is the “old man of the mountain” a natural rock formation that fell in 2003, but is a icon of new hampshire
The Washington slander is wild
Fun fact: the plane on the Ohio plate was originally printed backward. They printed thousands of plates with the error before correcting the art.
Can’t even have normal License Plates
Fun fact: Ohio is the greatest state in the Union

Drinking game: take a shot every time Scott completely changes his mind about a license plate.
Wait don’t do that
The amount of pride I felt seeing Scott put my states license plate into pure art was unreal.
Oh my goodness, same
Same dude
Same
Same 😂
the amount of shame i felt seeing scot put my state (CA) into fender bender..
You're spot on about the Maryland flag and college. I moved here to attend school. The flag is an extremely common decoration. It's in almost every dorm room.
I live in California and have always felt that way about the license plate! There is so much beautiful scenery they could have on the plate. The golden gate bridge, LA palm trees, lassen volcano, San Diego beaches. However, I think that's exactly why they made it plain. If they did the golden gate- LA would be PISSED, if they did palm trees- NorCal would be PISSED, etc etc lol
I still prefer the black/yellow, blue/yellow, or "Back to the Future" plates. They don't have crazy graphics either, but they're still nicer looking than the boring current plates.
That makes sense
Could include the Golden Gate Bridge on one half and a vaguely SoCal beach on the other half.
omg Scott this was such a good video idea. It was interesting hearing your takes, I was actually surprised how many of them were different than mine. This was so much fun to watch!
honestly this is randomly giving me the inspiration as an artist to design cool license plates for each state. not that they’ll ever be a real thing but like just as a fun project to do.
I would give up after the fourth one😭
Sounds fun af I might join you haha
as a Michigander, the normal Michigan license plate is offensive to look at. but thankfully, we also have one that’s got the Mackinac Bridge with a pretty sunset behind it that i think is pure art tier worthy.
I prefer the water winter wonderland plate myself, but I totally agree that the default plate is trash. Very glad they don't make you pay some crazy fee for the vastly superior alternative designs.
Agreed our original plate is so boring. I had no problem spending a few extra bucks for the water winter wonderland, it’s so much more appealing
Came here to comment this, I was very disappointed our default plate was chosen. It's trash. The bridge is pure art, and the new WWW is clean as hell.
mine is a recently discontinued design released back in 2007 and it's gorgeous, it should replace the default ngl
Remember the blue ones with the white letters? Sigh I miss those for nostalgia reasons
Scott’s humor is actually really good 😭 I was chuckling the whole video
As a Nebraskan, so glad our new license plate made it into pure art! But the man is a mosaic that is in the Nebraska state Capitol. It is a Roman character depicting “the genius of creativity”. Now does that really represent Nebraska? I’m not entirely sure, but it is a cool piece of art!
Thank you so much for explaining that character's identity. I was wondering.
@@theadaptationstationmaster The full mosaic in the capital is beautiful as well. It isn't that odd for us to re-depict art on our plates. A past plate showed "The Sower" a huge statue that sits on top of the capital building. Though this is our coolest plate by far.
@@titheproven954 it is pretty
The crazy thing about Maryland’s flag is that every college age guy is also completely obsessed with it and it’s not uncommon to see people wearing Maryland flag shorts and socks
Because it's an awesome flag
no literally and it's so ugly imo!! never understood it
Yup! I went to University of Maryland and as you can imagine the flag is our whole aesthetic lmao
@@wawaicedcoffeeand @vampireinthesun question for you as someone who’s from Maryland. When I was a teenager my sis started dating a guy from Maryland, his car had a Maryland plate with a crane/herron on it. I thought that was the official plate for a long time, so my question for you is; is the flag plate the official plate for Maryland, if so have you seen the crane/herron plate, and if you have seen the crane/herron plate how common is it??
It looks like a destiny shader lmao it’s so sick
NH resident here - The “maybe Crazy Horse being carved” face on the plate is actually a natural geological occurrence on the side of a mountain called “The Old Man of the Mountain”. It was a big tourist attraction in our state, but it fell down in 2003. Now, the iconic profile of the Old Man is on our license plates, drivers licenses, and state highway markers. Personally, I always liked that our state has a little in-joke as our logo and on all our branding. It’s really something that no one else would know outside of NH!
was born in 06 never got to see the old man on the mountain only its remnants 😭
I’m a Rhode Island resident and I was never alive to see him, but whenever I go to New Hampshire I try to take the trail to see where he once was. It’s a beautiful lake, and eagle crag is there too which is cool. The mountains you drive through as you go anywhere in the white mountains is so cool. I also think about the Willy house and accompanying pond that has some amazing clear water and beautiful brook trout. New England as a whole is underrated as New Hampshire has some amazing landscape and Rhode Island has some great coast. Idk if it’s just because I’m a resident but it feels like there’s so much culture in these shores, and in those mountains in New Hampshire
I think Scott should have sought some education before he took on this topic. I'm pretty sure that the "Star Wars thing" he pointed out on the Illinois place was a representation of the state capitol dome. As for the "random lettering" on the bottom of some plates, that could be the county where the vehicle owner resides. That was true in Georgia when I lived there many years ago.
I remember hearing about it when i lived there in 2016. Im sad i didnt get to see it myself
@@christopherboada7921tbh it makes it funnier
I’m an indiana resident and very familiar with our license plate. The little red birds are referencing how the cardinal is our state bird, which I see literally everywhere. I have a couple living near my house and they’re so pretty. It’s a very basic license plate though, not bad but not amazing. I enjoy it.
Yeah Indiana should be pure art in my opinion lol
It’s the state bird in Ohio too, I love them 🕊️❤️
It's ours in North Carolina too. Now I'm wondering how many states have them as the state bird tho🤔
There are seven with the cardinal: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia
As a Hoosier, I’m sad that I don’t see more ppl with the state license plates. It really is simple but pretty too.
I never thought I’d find myself enjoying a half hour of some dude ranking license plates but here we are!
NH license plate has the “old man of the mountain” on it. A natural granite formation in the white mountains that was up kept by the same local family for decades until it fell due to erosion and ice separation in 2003. It’s still the iconic image of New Hampshire hahahaha loved all the commentary. This is the first of your videos I’ve seen can’t wait to cruise through more of your content 😊
new yorkers actually got to vote for the new plates; 3 of the five designs had preferences to nyc which everyone hated. so naturally, the one showcasing more than just the city won. sure beats the old "gold" plates which a lot of us still have.
"gold" until it starts peeling and you're left with just the stamped metal 😷
@@nickluciano474 only F and G series plates had the printing fall off🙃 H through J have been fine
ahhhh that explains why i didnt recognize the one in the video
The 2001 NY license plate is the best one in my opinion
I actually liked the gold and blue plates, they stood out
That’s the Old Man of the Mountain of NH’s license plate!! “It is believed that it was formed 12,000 years ago from the water in the granite bedrock froze and thawed after the glaciers retreated. It was first noted in 1805.” It fell into a lake in May of 2003. I was lucky I got to see it twice before it fell. It really was beautiful.
I was surprised he didn’t know about the old man of the mountain; it made national headlines when it collapsed! But maybe only we New Englanders remember 😅
My New Hampshire Heart broke when he didn't recognize it
@@TheBeatlesTodayI’m from Utah and I instantly recognized it was the old man of the mountain. So it’s not just new englanders that would know it
I recognized it, but I had no idea it fell down
The Wright Brothers were from Ohio, hence the “birthplace” of aviation. They made their first successful flight in Kittyhawk, North Carolina. Don’t be dissing my Ohio Scott!
that's what I was guessing, one was flexing where flight first happened, and the other was flexing where they were born
I was going to comment the same thing but you explained it much better than I would have! I’ll add that I very much preferred our older, more minimalist plates. For me, the new ones are just… too much.
The last Ohio plate was much better, we had a downgrade 😢
They have the flex in the same way on the state quarters lol
@@claywilliams6480 if you're talking about the 2004 one, I'd say it's close, but nostalgia for my teenage years makes me choose the 2013 one
As a new Mexican I'm so mad it was not an updated license plate but I will let it slide, for this time
I’m saying! Our Black Chile plate is the best looking by far.
The fact you being state neighbors and you calling Minnesota beautiful that melts my still frozen from the winter heart
I went from "iconic" fender bender California to "pure art" Ohio plates, it was very strange to see real colors on my bumper. But I think California has the best "unapologetically government-issued" look, no bias at all. I'm also glad you got the new Ohio plate and not the ugly old one hahaha
yeah, the old ohio one is so boring lol
Does anybody actually have the new ones though? I never see them because who wants to give the government extra money that they don't have to.
@@niloc446 a lot of times if you get a new car you need new plates so I’ve seen them a lot because of that. I still see a few of the old red white and blue ones though

I live in Alaska and there's actually a bunch of beautiful official plates you can choose from, but if you don't ask for a different one you will get stuck with the ugly yellow one. There's a lot of good options if you want a pretty plate though.
Also, I'm from Ohio, and the reason it's called the birthplace of aviation is because even though they flew a plane for the first time in a different state, the Wright brothers were born in Ohio.
lol that’s tricky on Ohio’s part. I was going to say my grandpa has an Alaska plate and it has a cool design with a bear but idk if it’s current
@@kristin3386 Yeah the bear one's pretty popular :) I see it all the time

Also from alaska and thought the same thing. There’s a couple way prettier ones! From an outside perspective the yellow one is pretty ugly. But as someone from the state I think it’s also kind of iconic lol
As someone living in Arizona, seeing a Wisconsin front license plate coming at you from the wrong direction on the highway is extremely accurate when they come migrate south for the winter.

@@JhonnyBoi - Uhaul was based in Arizona. It's easier for them to keep the trucks registered in AZ because there's no inspection on vehicles and it saves them a bunch of $. They can just send out the new stickers to where the trucks are located when registration is due.
A few years ago, New Mexico started doing black license plates with yellow lettering and cute little chili peppers. It looks way cooler than that plain bright yellow with red letter. Sad you didn't get to see it.
From New Hampshire: that's the Old Man of the Mountain! It was a natural rock formation that looked like a man, it sadly collapsed in 2003. Also "live free or die" is not just a motto, people legitimately use it to argue against laws and they brand it on everything - it's a way of life.
as a citizen of Georgia, i do not think the Georgia license plate deserves to be in pure art, but i'm glad you feel that way, Scott.
the white with the peach option is much better

I'm pretty sure this whole video was made so that Scott could talk about how much nicer the North Dakota license plate is than the Minnesota one.
Great job @MikeCrocker. Clean edit, you captured Scott's style and essence well. If he hadn't given you credit I wouldn't have known he didn't edit it. I liked the Pelican fade and all the plates on the cars too. Those seemingly little things to the viewer, that are a major PITA, added a lot.

Ya Canadian here, also got little variety here
And each state has many variations and customizations.

As a person from North Dakota, I am overjoyed at the fact I've actually found a RUclipsr that lives here.
As a Nebraska who lives uncomfortably close to Iowa, the "Scott" at the bottom of the plate is a county - Iowa plates have the residents' respective county at the bottom of it. Also, the greek mythology guy on our plate is from a mural that's in our state capital lol.
"This is the governor of Nebraska... a very flattering portrait of himself" when I tell you I laughed so hard my sides hurt
As a Californian, when I found out about other states actually having a design on their license plates, I was so disappointed in what we had, it's literally nothing
The Ca license plate is plain for cost cutting reasons.
@@danielleporter1829 that just makes it worse...
My favorite license plates are Nevada
As an born and raised Arkansas girl, I'll give you the reason for the diamond in the middle of the AR license plate. Arkansas has a natural diamond mine, located in Murfreesboro, where you can mine for diamonds. The diamond mine is called Crater of Diamonds State Park.
New Mexico also has a turquoise and a black license plate. Plus it’s the only one that has USA on it because people still think it’s just Mexico
I will say, I'm from Upstate New York and it feels very nice to be included on the state license plate by Niagara Falls. Also so glad you got to see that plate and not the unbearably ugly orange plates we had not too long ago. They were like Alaska's but worse somehow. The new ones were a huge improvement
Yeah those plates were ugly. I’m glad they have the plates they have now. It reminds of of the one from the 2000s which also had Niagara Falls and NYC. Although as someone originally from Long Island, I personally like that they included the Montauk lighthouse on the new license plate.
I was so afraid whatever website he used wouldn’t have our updated plates. Those old ones were such monstrosities 😂
I’m from Connecticut, but I still see a lot of New York license plates since I don’t work far from that state line. Those orange plates would be a Fender Bender for sure unless you are from the area.
I was pleasantly surprised by your placement of Oregon's plate! It seemed like your top spots were reserved for plates with a lot going on and it's more minimalist, but the thick borders pushed it over the edge!
I think it's art I just got Oregon plates 2 yrs ago and I feel very fancy Also it looks like Oregon We love our Redwoods here in the coastal Northwest
I love Oregons plate Oregon and Maines plates are my favorite. As some one from California I wish our plate was better it has so much potential.
The eight stars on the Alaska flag are supposed to be the Big Dipper and then the North Star in the corner but most people don’t have that plate there are a ton of more specialty plates with more art like there’s a bear one and a gold rush one and a northern lights one
I love Alaska license plates, when I see them (I live in a military area), I didn't even realize I'd never seen the standard one. It's so boring. P.s. I recognized the Big Dipper immediately, Scott must not be into constellations.
So I decided to do the tier-maker as well and ranked the license plates myself. This is what I had, from last place to the top:
Fender Bender: Wisconsin, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Vermont, Delaware, Alaska, New Mexico, Missouri, Pennsylvania, New Jersey
I especially found Wisconsin terrible from the get-go and over 15 years after seeing my first Wisconsin plate my opinion has not changed. The change in Tennessee’s plate was so bad that my jaw dropped when I went there last month. Thankfully not all Tennessee license plates are like that.
Uninspiring: Montana, Texas, DC, Iowa, California, Virginia, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, West Virginia
I have seen enough Texas and California license plates to know they wouldn’t cause fender benders, so Uninspiring is where they had to go. I couldn’t place West Virginia higher like you did. I just didn’t have it in me to.
Clean: Kansas, Oregon, Mississippi, Connecticut, Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, Washington, New Hampshire
Connecticut, my home state, appears here. While I might agree on a case to put it a tier lower, the one time I saw a CT license plate during my trip to TN, my family that are now locals in Tennessee were kind of jealous of both Connecticut license plates and the ID Cards we get. Plus, we do have an iteration that has “Preserve the Sound” on it that if displayed would be aesthetic. All that made my decision to put my state in Clean. As for the others, they all had something I liked enough that I couldn’t put them lower, but also lacked in ways that kept me from placing them any higher.
Aesthetic: Hawaii, Colorado, New York, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Maryland, Florida, Nevada, Oklahoma, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana
Hawaii is right on the edge, but the rainbow was just enough that I gave it the nudge to aesthetic. I’m glad New York doesn’t have that ugly orange anymore because THAT was atrocious given how many times I have seen those license plates. North Carolina is perhaps where we disagree the most. I actually love what they did with their license plate and it really illustrated “First in Flight” very well in a subtle way. The character font was what kept NC out of Pure Art because everything else was just that: Pure Art.
Pure Art: Ohio, Utah, Georgia, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Arizona (Bronze), Idaho (Silver), Nebraska (Gold)
All of these were pure art and I think you did a good job with this category. I did not have North Dakota as my favorite license plate, but that’s because of the states I placed above it. 5th is still amazing and North Dakota definitely did an amazing job! Idaho and Nebraska for me was what won me over. The Art decisions they did on their respective plates was masterful!
Me staying up for 27 minutes, trying to keep my eyes open so I could hear what Scott says about Wisconsin
I realize I could’ve skipped but I needed context
This was so entertaining. 😂 I wasn’t expecting to be extremely invested the entire time. I’ve moved around to a lot of states and I have a multimedia degree though, so it felt like a close to home subject. Also, I think Washington state has had that license plate design for over 20 years because I believe it was the same when I lived there. I think they should update it with an actual photo of Mount Rainier.
Babe new Greek Lore just dropped! Todd the God of Nebraska!
I had an obsession with license plates as a child, so I can identify a bunch without really looking. So this video felt like it was made for me. I'd actually love to do this with some of the nicer specialty plates from each state, but that would probably take ages.
fun fact: the words on the kansas license plate says “Ad Astra Per Aspera” which means “To the Stars Through Difficulties”, which is our state motto.
I liked the old Iowa plates a little more. It felt more home-grown. The new ones they rolled out a few years ago (several, to be fair) have gone really minimalist which I guess is the point, and I do like the color blocking. The colors are just not good lol. But we do have a LOT of windmills. The 2nd most windmills of any state, even though we are not a big state.
Edit: I said something about Scott being the county because we have counties at the bottom of the plates, but it was actually hilarious you just stumbled upon the Scott county plate and were so offended by it
hi i'm from Iowa
@@watchoutforwhoyoupissoff3046 hi lol, good for you
Sigh. The Wright brothers were from Ohio, but took their plane to Kitty Hawk, NC to complete their historic flight.
When Scott mentioned the first in flight bit for North Carolina I knew he was going to be confused once he got to Ohio.
I'm from Ohio, the reason the license plates say birthplace of aviation is because the Write brothers were born and lived in Ohio their entire lives. But I think their first successful flight took place in North Carolina.
Technically Wilbur was born in Indiana. But they were both raised and lived in Dayton.
I moved to Montana a couple years ago from Chicago.. one of the first things I noticed was the 1,000 different license plates.
I was kind of excited to pick my Montana plates when I had the chance. There's literally a book you can flip through to choose your license plate design.
I’m in Colorado right now and so many people (myself included) have alternate plates that are so graphically varied! My “shelter pet” plate makes me aesthetically happy and lets me support our humane society!
@@Slowplaymae I do believe those are extra though, like in Florida where the special plates are donations to the cause associated with your plate. I think Montana just has a massive amount of options compared to other states for free
@@boojersey13 only like 3 or 4 are free. The others all cost somewhere between $10-$50 if you want them. It's a way for montana to get some money because we don't have sales tax. Most of our money comes from tourism though
That's so fun!
Yes, a lot of Montana plates benefit local nonprofits which is really cool!
You should do this again in a year lmao
Alaska had a limited edition northern lights license plate that I got issued while registering my car. Kept it as a souvenir after moving. Definitely would’ve been higher up if you used that one
I don't think anyone would mind if this was a tier list channel
As someone who has family in Idaho, Idaho is so flat that you can see mountains in a full 360 degrees around you no matter where you stand... So having the mountains almost be invisible, its pretty accurate...
I grew up in Idaho. I lol’d when he said he would imagine it being flat
As a native Tennesseean, our license plate is very uninspired. It very recently changed, so I’m surprised it’s actually updated on the tier list. It used to be a prettier (but still kinda uninspired if I’m being honest) gradient green that was supposed to represent the Smoky Mountains, and that was the image I used to think of when I thought of Tennessee.
With the new license plate, there’s been a whole brouhaha surrounding the fact that they made the “In God We Trust” text optional. There are literally articles publishing the statistics for which counties are the “Godliest” based on the opt-in rates for the license plates.
There is one thing Tennessee has that makes our license plate superiority undebatable, though: no where else can you embellish your motor vehicle with a license plate that features Dolly Parton’s face.
I wish they would have just grabbed the Friends of the Smokies plate and made that our official plate
My dad still has the old Tennessee License plate(I like the Blue color of the new Tennessee license plate tho)
If I remember right, I believe there used to be a TN plate that was actually shaped liked the state. Wish we could have those, they'd be sick.
i really like your guy's art plates with the cat with the saxaphone and the grining fish plate.
As a fellow Tennesseean, I really like our new plate! Very preppy. But my favorite is the “Save the bees” plate 🐝 that one always makes me smile!
As an Oklahoman who's lived in Texas, I loved your takes!
Virginian here! Our slogan is “Virginia is for lovers” because we were the first state to legalize Black and White marriages. A lot of people would come to our state to get married! I’m pretty proud of that :)
I used to live in VA. I used to have the railroad license plate. I was gonna get the one with the flag until I saw the railroad heritage one at the last second before I stepped to the counter. And considering that was the Loving case, very nice play on words (even though I’d be surprised if that was a no pun intended).
I... don't think that's true? The slogan started being used in 1969 (which was close to Loving v. Virginia), but most websites I could find said it referred to the scenery and tourist destinations that people could fall in love with.
Your capitol city Richmond used to also be the Confederate Capitol
Ok but it was loving VS Virginia thoooo. Like. Y’all were canonically anti interracial marriages. Virgin a was v much not for the Lovings that’s why you had to have the casw
The Oklahoma license plate is indeed new, they updated it just a few years ago (2017). They also changed the "Oklahoma" at the top just last year for some reason. It used to say "Explore Oklahoma." No idea why effort was put into that change.
It's also not the only official plate (there are several tribal license plates). The last two general state license plates we had were a lot more Native America-centric, but they just went with the state bird this time. They're very tourism-focused now instead of history focused. Makes sense, considering the Tourism and Recreation Department is who selected the new plates.
A bunch of the newer plates that are just plain with the squiggly line down the middle are that way for security reasons. Something about reflective “threads” that make it easier to spot fakes. I think we should take the opposite approach. Make license plates so chaotic that they are hard to counterfeit because no one could possibly notice all the things happening at once.
Is that what it is? I always thought it was supposed to be smoke.
My least favorite part about moving from Oregon to California was having to change my license plate. I miss that dope little tree!
You shouldn't have changed CA's registration is bonkers expensive
on the edge of my seat waiting for Idaho, you honor us for even recognizing we are a separate state from Iowa. tysm, it’s great to be aesthetic
The Iowa plate is going for a two for one design like the previous one had (but did kinda better). It's supposed to blend the City life and rural aesthetic into one aswell as the vibrant colors you'd see in Iowa. And of course the words in the bottom is County names. I personally really like the Iowa plate. The old one had the outline of a farm but the skyline was the outline of a city which made it look like the city in the background while being on a farm so the old plate kinda did it better. But i do love the vibrant colors of the new plate compared to the white of the old one, Iowa is a vibrant state and driving though the country the vibrant earthy colors of greens and blues is beautiful so i like that the plate fits that. Also i think Minnesota has the most Iconic plate out of Midwest states. Living in North Iowa Minnesota drivers are usually pretty bad lol
As a Michigander, I have never had any youtuber take me on a roller coaster of emotions greater than those few seconds of you debating where to put it.
As someone from europe who didn't even know different state license plates are a thing, that was so much fun to watch! But can you choose between a plain and a fun one or does everyone have these state specific plates?
Maine is definitely my favorite one though, it's so cute and cozy
You do have to get one specific to the state where you live, but at least where I live in Michigan you can get the default or pay a little more for a couple different options. My dad has a really nice one from here that has the Mackinaw bridge and a sunset. Absolute art, and always disappoints me that its not the default.
you can pay extra for custom words + letters too :) but that's usually kind of rare for ppl to do
You can choose in most states! There’s a few options
these are the default and you can pay to choose a different one! in florida at least some of the fees go to help protect whales for example and you can get a plate with whales on it!
I’m from Oregon and I agree with Scott’s assessment that it is aesthetic; you should look at the cultural trust one from Oregon- that one is pure art.
For sure, Oregon has pretty license plates
We have so many beautiful plate options in Oregon! I want to get the one with the Orca 😍
Oregon has some bangers for sure. The salmon one from the 90s/00’s was great, the Oregon trail one was kinda dope too and way ahead of it’s time with the gradient scheme. Also I love those Rip City Trailblazer ones. Also crater lake one is amazing. Oregon is killing it, what a great state
As an arizona resident. I appreciate that you put our plate in pure art. We really do have a good one. Beautiful just like our little desert paradise. My hometown flagstaff though is not a desert like the rest of the state. We're at a higher elevation so that changes things weather wise. I a tually used to live in Tennessee, and the three stars represent the 3 regions of Tennessee, east, middle, and west Tennesee.
As an Arizonan- I get offended when ppl don’t like our license plate. I feel so validated rn 😂 it’s just so good!
AZ is the only state offering an Alice Cooper license plate.
As a Michigander, I was hoping he'd see one of the Mackinac Bridge licence plates, not the Pure Michigan one. There's several iterations of it, but some have some nice sunsets. There's also a nice design with a skyline and forest in the background and the state in the middle. The fact you were provided our plainest one--
Even the new Winter Wonderland throwback plates are better looking than the Pure Michigan ones. They're AWFUL.
Yeah there's a reason why I've gone with specialty plates, first plate was Spectacular Peninsulas and now I've got the Conserve Wildlife Habitat plate with the elk
I honestly like the Pure Michigan one, but there's no denying it's the worst.
The pure michigan one is the state standard one and the Mackinac Bridge one is more expensive since it is a collectors plate.
@@jennteal5265the throwback plate is clean as hell
I'm an Iowan living in Illinois. I find the Illinois opinion accurate, lol. Scott is a county in Iowa, mine says a different name because my car is registered in another county. We named a county after you because you're so special. This plate is a new design meant to highlight the city and country feel (or whatever) but I never thought it would look like 2 license plates taped on top of each other. I gotta look at this thing daily, thanks, I hate it
I agree the old ones feel more nostalgic/small town. I think the newer ones (although they’re more than 5 years old now I guess) were going for minimalism with the silhouettes but they picked very vibrant colors. I don’t mind the idea of minimalist silhouettes with color blocking, but I agree the colors are kinda garish and the font is not good 😂 I never noticed the edge and I had to run out to my car because I was so confused.
Update: burned my feet on the sidewalk running out to look. Now I’m extra salty. Not a good plate, I could have gone my whole life without knowing about the border. Who did that? I wish I never knew 😂
god i love scott. I want him to take on state and city flags now.
Mista GG already did a ranking state flags video! Might actually be where Scott got the idea for this vid lol. Maybe Scott could do city flags though. I was today years old when I found out cities have flags.
@@ImmortalBroken Seriously!? Your city doesn't put it up everywhere? Cause my city has it all over the place. (I mean technically it's a logo that can be put on a solid color flag, but same thing really).
As a resident of New York that does NOT live in NYC and actually lives very close to Niagara Falls I was so excited to see that new license plate design. It really does say “hey, we’re more than just the city” and I’m glad you agree.
I’m moving from Wyoming to Texas for work and the saddest thing about it aside from losing mountains, snow, and access to public land is having to give up my gorgeous WY tag for the dull and boring TX tag.
My family collected all 50 states Matchbox cars with their matching little plastic license plate. I remember being like 6-8 years old in different K-Mart's when we traveled. Almost every-time we was in the current state we never found that current state. This reminds of me when my family would judge the new one in the car when we got them! I'm 23 years old and still got 38. The last 12 I don't know where they went over 15 years.
Hey Scott- Ohioan here. First off, I’m glad you realized the absolute ART of the new plate. Our old plate was SO BORING, so as you can imagine, we were all pretty happy about the new plate design. Fun fact- there are new plates worth some money because they accidentally printed some with the plane backwards! Gotta say though, wish they would have went more **spooky** since we are home to the most haunted houses. We are not okay 😂
Also- Wright Brothers were born and raised in Ohio, hence being the “birthplace”. However, their first flight took place in North Carolina. Essentially, Ohio is trying to take all the credit there.
Yesss state drama
I have never seen that Ohio plate in my life
@@Eirik_Bloodaxe Cuz it's literally brand new lol
A lot of people in Ohio still have the plain blue boring plates on their cars
@@kevinsealschott1090yeah we still do on our cars lol
Why was I so nervous as you got to my state 😂 Legitimately getting tense. I love our license plate (Utah) so I was very relieved that you immediately dropped it into pure art lol I had no idea this is something I apparently care about. It looks really nice on every car I've seen it on and it's easily recognizable when playing a driving game to find plates from as many states as you can.
same lmao i was like if Utah doesn't get pure art i will riot in the streets 😂
Utah is usually forgotten so I was very happy seeing him rank it at the top! Utah has an amazing license plate
While i associate Utah’s plates with people who think they’re piloting the Millennium Falcon away from the Death Star, they’re driving so aggressively…
I mean the design is nice as heck!
Ignore me, I’m from Idaho
@@kaimcdragonfist4803 Ah! So that’s why I get so irritated every time I see an Idaho plate! You guys drive like you are gonna go hang with Napoleon and Pedro in Preston! We move at a faster pace on the Wasatch Front, that’s why we drive like that. It ain’t small town Idaho down here!
(All jokes aside, we really do love you guys up north. Idaho is Utah’s brother from another mother.)
New hampshire resident here, the thing on the licence plate is a mountain formation called the old man on the mountain, because well, it looks kinda like a face. that's an artistic rendition of what it looked like before it fell off. I'm pretty sure
Considering it's New Hampshire, I'm betting that's Mount Washington on the plate in the background.
Annnnnnnnnd, looks like I'm wrong. :D But that's OK. There ARE a lot of mountains up that way at least.
After watching the tier list for US state flags, this is exactly what I wanna see.
The thing in the New Hampshire plate is the “Old Man of the Mountain,” basically a chunk of rock that looks like a man’s face. It fell off the mountain in 2003 but it’s still on the license plate
As a New Yorker this is the first time I’ve ever seen that license plate. Honestly like it better
Massachusetts here. Yeah I’ll agree our plates suck. But I see New Hampshire plates all the time and that’s the Old Man of the Mountain which collapsed 20 years ago. Franconia Notch is beautiful.
Idaho flat?! No sir! We’ve got mountains galore
