HMD is evolving despite the short life span and little money to fight competitors, but it is on the right track. It's a small company so fans need a little more patience, more modern phones will come with time. Nokia 8.3 is a device with a beautiful design, it will be my next smartphone, three days from now, we have other manufacturers in the game, but I prefer Nokia for its history and confidence. The camera is OK for me.
The 1020 has a nice and natural look to it. A pity the newer hardware and processing in the 8.3 still has a little too much sharpening and noise reduction. Otherwise it does pretty well especially with DR and low light
Every smartphone nowadays has this oversharpened imaged as default resulting for hurting the eyes.. and all of these camphone today, the image you will get is more likely unnatural too!
I am. I was hoping the Nokia 9 could replace it, but the camera oversharpens everything and the resolution is relatively low. Have two Lumia 1020s, one on Win 8.1, the other on 10. Use them for photography and e-mail.
I see you are a man of culture. The same for me since the old camera phones looks way more natural and true-to-life than today's software-driven oversharpened mess.
What is "the rest" for you? Can you set a link as minute:second? For me, everywhere the Lumia brought the better and above all editable photos. Only, with LowLight photos the color of the Lumia moves a bit into the greenish.
Wouldn't really say the 8.3 5G has more detail or better dynamic range when not using HDR setting. The 8.3 5G's dynamic range on daylight is too high, not pleasant enough. Even the 3x zoom is a complete fail for the 8.3 5G. But I can agree that the 8.3 5G has more detail and better dynamic range in lowlight and with HDR feature turned on. It does look miles better than the L1020.

Very nice comparison. I would try the new Nokia if it had something besides the camera to offer. I have a 1020 and still use it on occasion with the grip and extra battery capacity. The Lumia 950XL is also good. However, the shot to shot speed with the 1020 is so slow that any action shots are essentially impossible. But that's not to say that the 8.3 5G is a slouch, the HDR ON shot is definitely miles better than the Lumia. Even the lowlight shot seems to favour the 8.3 5G more because of its Quad Bayer sensor. If Nokia put OIS on the main camera like in its predecessor, the 8.1, I can guarantee the lowlight shot would be even better. As for the macro camera, it needs to DIE! IT'S COMPLETELY HOPELESS!
