The greying of Ciri's hair was from stress - that's how I related to it. She'd been in such hardship, we was going grey at an incredibly young age, that's why Geralt was furious. He saw how much hell she must have been through to be effected as such

This is obvious to me that the colour of her hair changed because of her traumatic experience during the time she was separated from Geralt. That is why Geralt is so angry. That he could not prevent all the harm that happened to her.

Reading this books can give you an introduction to European collective unconsciousness, spirit, mindset etc. So many meaningless deaths, personal and social traumas, unfair situations, hard, unsolvable dilemmas. Still, my favouire part is how Sapkowski stands for hope and personal responsibility. I think, Ciri managed to stop the endless circle of hatred and wrath thanks to Geralt and Yennefer as role models and parent figures to her. Its a beautiful, still realistic story about how to deal with the hardest emotions, grief, anger, lonelyness.. anyone experience at some point in their life. I agree that Ciri's hair got white because of the traumatic experiences she went through. It might be a metaphore how she aged a lot mentally in such a short time. And I think they died at the end but only for this world, this sphere, this age. It was a nice ending that could strenghten people who loss their loved ones within similar circumstances, unexpected, unfair, ugly way that yes, its shocking, but its not the end, just the beginning of something new.

You had the answer to the books ending in your lips but did not went all the way. In short, the island that Ciri and the Unicorn take Geralt and Yennefer is the Isle of Avallac`h, which is a nod, as you said, to the Arthurian legends as in the Isle of Avalon. The Isle of Avalon in Arthurian legends is the land of the fairies (elves) and it is a mystical place where nothing ever really dies. So, in that sense, Geralt and Yennefer are not dead. It`s a poetic ending more than a true ending, hence the huge room for interpretation.

Ciri's hair changes because of shock and trauma it turns a - well let's just say whiter shade of pale - she already had ashen blonde but not white hair before (which has been debated over whether it's a dishwater blonde or a grey blonde because of translation issues) which she inherited from her Elven ancestor Lara Dorren.
Sorry if that's a tad confusing, but yeah hair went white from shock and she was already light haired so probably made it easier to happen.
I love the books but yeah LotL threw me for a loop and I'm a Brit so I should know about all that myth stuff, I do love mythology but it seems like a retcon but I don't know, I just know that the books are fantastic as a whole, but perfection is subjective and even so I don't think perfection can exist.
Also Ciri doesn't have a brother, her father (biological, I think we can all agree that Geralt's the better father figure) Emhyr wants to make a baby with Ciri himself, so yeah it's even sicker haha.

8:28 I think that I know why Emhyr let them go. It was because Yennefer told him that she does not want to die with a thought that her daughter was crying. Ciri's hair doesn't change, but the description does based on who is looking, what they lighting is like, and whether there's some magic going on through/nearby her.
My impression is that they'd die in this world if they stayed, but can recover and live on in the new world. Ciri would likely be able to bring them back if she wanted, but she brought them to a paradise life where they could be together without all the extra complications, so why would they come back? Their story is done in their world, and the world will go on without them.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I enjoyed the review a lot!
Personally I love the LAdy of the Lake because it leans so strongly into the witcher being a fairy tale spun out of real events - events often tragic and simply sad and ending in death. But the fairy tale end happily, it has to, it's a fairy tale! And the real story also ends with an air of mystery - the ambiguous ending, which in turth most likely means Geralt and Yennefer died in Rivia.
And I agree - the Battle of Sodden and the field hospital - it's creme de la creme, wonderful!
Also - you said something very important - the character writing is where Sapkowski shines in regards to his style.
And as far as killing all of the minor or secondary characters. They usuallu are a part of "show don't tell" reinforcing the current state of the world. The messenger was killed by Scoia'tael - therefore the scoia'tael are still active and truly happen to disrupt plans of the monarchs. The roads are not safe. Codringer and Fenn died - so they couldn't share truth about Ciri. And Vysogota, and Geralt's hansa, well this is the though one, but to me it reflects the theme of Death following both Geralt's and Ciri's steps - sure, it's meant to be hyperbolic, but is it? Is destiny real, is the outcome always ensured? :D

    • @BiggusD77
      @BiggusD77 Год назад

You're onto something there. People forget what the whole saga is really about; Destiny (predestination). Everyone Ciri meets gets caught in a strong current, either trying to kill her, get her, save her or have a baby with her - often to the point that they become single-minded bots only caring about that one thing. Then, when they are out of the picture, they die. All everyone - the Emperor, the sorceresses, Djikstra - achieved in the entire saga was to plunge the continent into war, hatred and death. This includes Ciri and the other protagonists.
So what that means to me is that the Destiny was fulfilled when Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer left that world. That's why Ciri joins Galahad, creating her own story and legend. The world was not only beyond saving, it was destined to die and be covered in ice, just like the prophecy said. Ciri's existence was what brought that about.
I think it is clear that Geralt and Yennefer were alive in their ending on the island of Avalon, but it is also quite likely that Avalon - an elven world - is a plane on the "spiral", which makes it impossible for Ciri to remain there herself because of the Wild Hunt. This is why Ciri tells Galahad how Geralt and Yennefer lived happily ever after together with her, and then adds that this is how she wished it ended, her face revealing sorrow.
To summarize, all the characters in the story, perhaps except Ciri, were not acting from a position of free will. Every word, every action and every character motivation was puppeteered by Destiny. Why? Because the whole of Geralt's world was an abomination of nature, an unnatural plane of existence where all other worlds blended into each other. The Conjunction of the Spheres had to be "cleaned up", and everyone and everything on it killed.
Once the race wars started in Rivia, the death spiral had already begun, and the ice age would just finish everything off. Ciri's mere existence was the progenitor of the whole process. Now that Destiny was done with them, she is finally free to pursue her own destiny.

Just finshed the book and I think it's one of the best in the series (haven't read Season of Storms yet). Agree with you that the way Geralt learns the castle location is very cheap and unearned, which is uncharacteristic for this author.
I also think that Geralt and Yen died. The fact that they also see all their friends who died at the boat scene and that Ciri cries when telling the ending to Galahad is enough for me. But I like that it's open to interpretation and everyone can make their own head canon from it!

You're not alone in the book losing you a bit. Even most Polish fans consider the final book a mixed bag and a bit out there. This isn't a cultural difference, I think Sapkowski was just getting tired and wanted to wrap things up and start writing his next book (Narrenturm, a historical adventure). He's also a big Arthurian legends buff so he probably threw it in to keep his interest. Hence the Lady of the Lake being full of weird historical tangents, convention shifts and Deus Ex Machina resolutions. I disagree on The Battle of Brenna though - for me it's one of the best battle scenes in any medium, and that's without any of the main characters in it.

I do think they are dead because there were numerous foreshadowing moments during the saga, most notably by the very end of Sword Of Destiny when Geralt is on the hill he is said to have met Death, and it's mentioned a couple of times that death is on his heels. It would also tie in with the wish he made, to bind Yennefer's fate to his, which would explain why she had to die with him.
Of all the added side characters and minor storylines I thought Nimue and Condwiramures were pretty great, genuinely captivating. I also think that some of these excepts at the begining of each chapter are wrong and serve to show how truth get's twisted over time, especially when recoeds are scarce or scrutanized.
Overall I enjoyed the read, short stories and books 6&7 more than most but I didn't get a sense of closure at the end. Not just because it's open for interpretation but because after 7 books I find it hard to pinpoint what exactly was this destiny they kept talking about. Did they reach it? was it fulfilled? I feel like Sapko put more effort into the war stories than the Geralt related one.

I am a European and I knew about Arthur as much as you mentioned in the vid, lol. I think it is fine nevertheless, but maybe even better otherwise, but yea google helps. For example, the island where Geralt & Yen ended up is the same where King Arthur was brought to rest in peace.
    **SPOILER**
I liked the end, but (unfortunately) I am convinced they both are dead in the end. Geralt died, whether Yen died or not during her rescue attempts is irrelevant because: In my opinion, with the help of the unicorn Ciri brought them into the underworld of the dead so they can rest in peace together for eternity. So no matter, whether Yen died or not, Geralt did, and Yen would love to be with him. That is what the unicorn did and this makes much more sense than the unicorn rescuing him because there is not the slightest hint in previous books that unicorns have powers to cheat death, but there is evidence that they have powers related to traveling across worlds. Also, a lot of characters' behaviors and reactions don't make sense otherwise. That is a short version, I could support these statements by numerous references from the book's ending, but my English is not good enough and my time runs out. Cheers^^

I think you're correct to "complain" (I know - you're not complaining - so... I'll say I'm complaining) about all the death. It's clear that the author wants us to feel like this world he's describing is just absolutely gruesome and everyone is just waiting for their turn in the barrel (the women in particular have absolutely nothing to look forward to other than being abused and raped in EVERY situation) but the problem with how he kills off all the main characters is that their deaths neither serve a purpose nor move the story along. They're just removed so that we don't have to think about them any longer. It's cheap and lazy. Regis' primary use was to help Geralt and Dandylion escape from the army camp 2(?) books earlier. Then he's just filler and witty banter.
But honestly - as complaints go - all of these pale in comparison to Emhyr's change of heart. It's the most bizarre writing I've ever encountered. The primary antagonist having spent the last 4.75 books carefully plotting everything in his world explains to Geralt what he's planning - and it's really wicked and contorted and gruesome and yet, as a villainous plot it makes a lot of sense and in response he tells Geralt and Yen to [I won't spoil it but everyone here knows] and they say... "yep - sounds good"?!?!?!? What?! How?! And then than we get Ciri arguing with him for 40 pages and seeing his inner workings and slowly he comes around... no wait [checks notes] no - that's what SHOULD have happened but instead he just kind of "meh - neverminds" it off-page and Ciri says "he just left" and that's... it.
And then we get a lot more (totally unnecessary) story-telling but the actual plot which again is what the whole story has been building towards - is just abandoned and we're left to watch Ciri and Yen inexplicably try and explain stuff to the Sourceress cabal and get (yet) more backstory of the way the kingdoms are negotiating and then as you've well described some totally ambiguous and unspecific "ending" with Geralt and Yen dying or not dying or sort of dying and absolutely no payoff on Ciri being a timelord... sorry - I'm rambling but this book was just such an incredible disappointment. The first 4 were fantastic... This was some Michael Chrichton level flubbing the finale.

i think Geralt and Yennefer lived, on the isle of apples, Ciri was so sad and upset as in her mind and rightly so she thinks she will never have the chance to see them again, and to keep the rest of her friends safe she cant return home, The games are hugely important for the next point and that on your preferance. I believe the games are CANNON and that theyre fitting to the source material and carry it on n a beautiful way, Geralt and Yennefer were close to death and not dead, and they spoent some time on the ISLE of APPLES to heal, thats when the RED RIDERS take Yennefer and we get the results of the first game, obviously to save yennefer Geralt needs to do some wither stuff, and this all culminates with him swapping places with Yennefer and ciri senses this in her Arthurian world and leaves that place, saving geralt but needing to go on the run now the hunt has her trail, and this leads through the second into the third game, where she comes back to the continent and Geralt and Yen find her and finallly help her defeat the hunt so she can live in peace, peace at her home

I really didn't enjoy the mixing of realities. I felt like it was written too much from author's personal world view and not really relatable to an average reader. Also, never truly explained what was Ciri's power all about, and why is she or her bloodline supposed to be saviour of the world. Overall I can say I really enjoyed the writing, not so much the story.

Let me tell you " Regis didn't died ". He is a high vampire, and a high vampire can killed by only other higher vampire. He was melted by spell of Vilgerfortz but he can regenerate. But through that state it must have took enormous time so his friend Detlaff (Higher vampire helped him regenerate ( This is from Witcher wild hunt Blood and wine expansion ). And from previous books we know that once Regis was torn into pieces and buried into a grave, it took him half of century to regenerate.
I totally agree that there could be a better story about how Geralt finding hideout of Vilgerfortz.
What i feel is witcher story is in pieces and because of so many adaptation it's getting complex.

Ciri's hair changes because she used a drug called fisstech, it's one of the side effects. Geralt knew she used the drug, that's why he was so angry.

I don't think that's it, there were lots of fisstech users in the books and they had normal hair. And there was no mention of fisstech changing hair color. I think it's simply Ciri experiences stressed her a lot and she grayed a little and Geralt was angry that she had suffered..

Yup, it was just the stress and anguish she went through. I'm surprised this is confusing for some people and they try to come up with all these deep lore explanations when it's just that simple.

I'm just gonna say something controversial here , that ending was horrible, Witcher TV show is no longer cannon in my mind, Ciri saving geralt and yennifer and placing them on a magical isle is my understanding and then the wild hunt attack the island to kick start the later(game) years of the Witcher.

Was pretty disappointed in the last book overall. Had a hard time finishing even. Almost felt written by a different author.
If basically everyone winds up googling something afterwards, it’s not a success.
We had to fill in a lot gaps for the author; Ciri’s becoming a Witcher and having white hair without taking the trials being just one. It’s bad story craft.

The book was OK for me definitely one of the weakest in the series. Knowledge of Arthurian legends doesn't make it particularly better either 😉 the first half of the book in particular was very weak. Sapkowski is trying to build up hype without any substance I was bored and really just pushing through to meaty final battle.

I thought the ending was some top tier bullsh*t. Everything was for nothing. I was madly in love with the story the entire way through the books. Then this one started and I was nothing but confused the entire time. What was the point? What was the point of anything at all? No prophesy came to fruition. Ciri being the chosen one and destiny and the child surprise… like… it all came to nothing. Why was Cahir’s destiny attached to Ciri? So he could die in her place? Surely there was a better use of his character. That was a sh*tty death! I could go on and on… in the end I’m just pissed off. Especially about Geralt. Just gets stabbed by a nobody in some “not so random” random and sudden genocide attempt on non-humans MERE MOMENTS before Ciri and Yennefer arrive? WTF? That was stupid. Whether we believe he died or went to lala land, his life with Ciri and in his world was over. I don’t expect happy endings but Geralt and Ciri deserved better and they deserved more and it’s really sad. I’m not sure there was even a moral to the story. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe I need more time to digest but pfftt. That pissed me off.
My #1 issues is that Emyhr just walks. off. Can’t stand to see Ciri sad and JUST LEAVES. Did I miss something? So all Ciri had to do this whole time was cry in front of her Dad. K. K. Any explanation there is more than welcome.
