- We spent Halloween Day streaming live from some of San Diego's Most Haunted locations. At the Elfin Forest we experienced interference with our go pro and a sound that was like nails on a chalk board that we could not explain when we were filming. I grew up about two miles away from Spooks Canyon. Moved out there in 1969. A 20 acre horse ranch at the end of Fortuna Ranch Road. Spent days hiking and riding horses through those hills.
Originally there were Indians, Grizzly Bears, coyotes, quail and who knows what else, that lived there for 10,000 years.
Then the Mexicans and the white man showed up.
Spanish missionaries and settlers use to travel through there on the old wagon train road that ran North and South from San Luis Rey to San Diego. Connecting with the wagon trail East to the water in Elfin Forest and the Escondido river.
The monks planted olive trees along the trail. They are gone by now. Replaced by homes. East of El Camino Real.
There was an insane asylum in the 1800's out somewhere near where Questhaven is now, that burned down in 1840, with a lot of asylum patients running out on fire and dying in the brush. How long it was there, who built it and whether it was owned by the Spanish or Mexican government or, a was private institution is unknown. It was still Mexico in 1840.
Then the olive farmers started to show up. What they did in the area was unclear except plant olive trees and start to settle. No records remain. The ruins faded and were lost to time, until they were purchased with the rest of the property in 1940 by Flower Newhouse from olive farmers and was re-named Questhaven spiritual retreat. A total of 655 acres. What remained of the asylum ruins after 100 years is unknown.
The Gypsies were in Hippy Valley/ Harmony Grove in the mid 1800's doing a lot of reported black and alternative magic. Trying to contact dead Indian spirits and open spiritual doorways. Most were driven out by the Christian townspeople and the rest were killed. They cursed the white settlers for it.
The story of the lady in white. A sheephearders wife who followed her husband and son out to California somewhere in the Elfin Forest area. Only to find they had been murdered and burned alive in their new home. She disappeared into the wilderness and supposedly haunts the area to this day causing major fatal accidents on Elfin Forest Road.
The closest family I knew back around that time were the Bumanns. They lived about two miles away. They had been there since the 1800's.
There were the gold and copper mines in the late 1800's out beyond Lone Jack Rd. (Named for one of the miners burrows that got left behind. Use to wander up and down Lone Jack Road for years.)
The whole time I lived out there the scariest thing was the coyotes howling together. About 20 of them.I did see some weird lights and a HUGE owl one night. There used to be 100's of quail, 100's of rabbits and 100's of Kangaroo rats.
It was REALLY DARK AND QUIET out there at night. I saw the old fire pit in Hippy Valley where a large group would meet. ???
Spent many a night with a small fire, camped out with my friend, a joint or two and some steaks bar-b-quing with nothing but peace and quiet to report. Except one time we did hear some children laughing one night. That was weird.
The only story I have.... One night in 1979 at about 3:00am, while I was living on the remaining five acres my parents owned in Olivenhain, I was woken up to the howling of all the dogs in the neighborhood. Non stop. So about 7-8 dogs all howling. I was frozen scared for some reason but about a minute into it, I managed to burst out of the door and run up a small incline where I could get a better view. I saw right at the entrance to our property an eerie blue light. It was there for about a second then vanished and all the dogs stopped howling at once. Dead silence. Nothing more that night.
It wasn’t until later I read about the old Englishman. A ghost who roams around with a blue lantern.

It's really pretty there. Love all the green scenery but hiking up there is killer. It's mostly uphill. I never got a scary or haunted vibe from it though.
Did you go at night ?? It’s a different story after dark
I live just a few miles from here, and my family has a really strange past with this place. A lot of the females in my family were "witches" and they used to "escape" into the forest for like 5 days at a time and no one knew why

Here's a tip, sweetheart. Next time you use a GoPro, put the skeleton back door on it so the mic isn't covered up.
Or just use the camera in your hand. Can hear squat with the water proof case👍gopros do have a downside.
