I like that 1999 model. $600 in 1999 with no bag, bagging chute, or mulch plug. That bagging kit was likely another $100-$150. Adjusted for inflation that would be upwards of $1,300 out the door in todays deflated Dollars. Toro could still build them like that, but consumers would *itch and complain to no end. Most people like to point the finger at manufactures, but consumers drive the market.

I've been watching your channel and others. I just bought a Super Recycler last week. I'm disappointed. I love the cut and the bagging. I HATE the Personal Pace drive system. My yard has several flower beds where I have to nose in and back out. The mower doesn't like to back out. My yard is also uphill and downhill. It's VERY hard to maintain a constant pace. I think I'm going back to my tried and true Snapper.

I have a 1988 Toro Recycler with a Tecumseh engine .It has a 3 speed transmission along with the throttle control , grease fittings and starts on the first or second pull. I got a new Toro Recycler in September, 2023. It broke after 1week (8-10hrs) of use. The new Briggs and Stratton engines leak oil (90% of the time I’m mowing a hill side. Yes, I go sideways not straight up and down). Then the plastic that keeps the wheel on broke. The wheel has been repaired, but the mower is still in the shop (as of 2/15). There is no word on when Briggs and Stratton will send the parts to fix the oil leak. I’ve had Toros before, but never this much problem with them.

On your older Toro, there should be a heavy black rubber handle latch spacer, Toro part 3-3287, on each of the handle latch mounting bolts. The rubber spacer goes between the deck and the handle latch. If the handle latch spacer is worn-out or missing, the handle latch won't stay on the pin further up on the handle.
If you install new handle latch spacers on your older Toro, you won't need to resort to using zip ties to hold the handle latches in place.
After installing the new handle latch spacers, bend the handle latches inward if needed.

I had a model 20056 SR4 that was as tough as a tank. Nothing slowed it down, and it cut beautifully mulching or bagging. Then I moved from CA to WA and found it upside down sitting on top of other furniture at the top of the moving truck trailer when they opened the doors. That pretty much killed the engine, so I got rid of it. I should have just repowered it. That was about the peak for Toro in my opinion.

I've hoped to find a good used Super Recycler for years and, last week, my wife called me up and said, "Honey, there are two of them grass thingies that you like on the side of the road. Do you want 'em?". Once I figured out what she was talking about, I said "YES! Where are you!!!"
8 minutes later, I was loading a Primo1996 Toro Super Recycler (looks like it's only a year or two old) and an older Craftsman push mower into the back of my truck.
The guy came out and said "They both ran when I parked them last fall and there is no gas in the tanks. I've owned them since they were new, but my wife is having a hard time using them. So I got an electric mower. You're welcome to them both." Then he started explaining his rationale for going the battery equipment route (I bet he regrets it within 2 years, if he doesn't already. Man, that's a nice mower.)
That Super Recycler will be parked right beside my 2014 HRX217, and I'll repair and sell the other 7 or 8 mowers that I've managed to gather over the past summer to support my mower habit.
I think I'm really starting to like other people choosing electric mowers.

After looking for weeks for a good cond used Toro, I’ve decided to go new. I’ve narrowed it down to the SR 21565 & this, 21564. Having read and watched many reviews of the latter having sputter/bogging issues, I’m leaning towards the 21565. Any thoughts on that decision? Mowing twice a wk in peak season and once wk mid summer here in the Northeast.

Back when I bought my Toro in 2020 I almost went with the one that has the 190cc briggs. I actually own the 21386 model though which the 21565 replaces! I have read quite a bit of mixed reviews as well on the 190cc engine that the 21564 model has that you mentioned. I ended up going with my model and it has the same engine as the updated 21565 model (163cc) and I can definitely say that I have never had an issue with it and it runs very strong and smooth! Ive seen from videos and reviews that the 190cc engine has better power but has issues with sputtering and failing. I guess my input would be if you REALLY need the power than go with the 21564 model but if it’s not a concern then just go with what is more reliable. The newer Briggs exi engines all have some bad reviews but that 190cc model does seem really hit or miss from what I have seen and read. Either way you will have a badass super recycler, I suggest the 21565 model though, it has not failed me! I hope this helps at all!

@@GarageGear Update: ((optional add on) Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) does fit all new Toro mowers that have the new baby carriage curved shape.
IMO you could make your own Toro's BTAH (Black Traction Assist Handle) from 2 pieces of wood in ((L) shape) and some bolts and washers.
Toro's BTAH converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward).
This is needed on steep hills where you need the Toro mower to pull you and this powerful mower up the hill without any effort on your part.
The powerful Toro mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode).
Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill.

Electric start via wall plug or separate dc source eliminates the battery dead weight. Tecumseh is the bees knees although many people will try to punch you for saying that. You might want to do a CA series for our friends in CA that are about to lose the ability to buy a new gas mower, riding mower, blower, string trimmer, etc. What they should buy now if it's close to time to replace something and how to keep these things going until the Democrats lose power in CA which is the 15th of never, so basically how to keep them going as long as possible or until battery technology catches up to fuel technology which might be in a few years or it might be the 15th of never.

You are much better off buying the old Toro. The Toro recycler is the worst lawn mower our family has ever purchased. We bought it in 2010 and IT NEVER WORKED GOOD FROM THE TIME WE PURCHASED IT BRAND NEW AND CAREFULLY TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX.
It did not work even after changing the blade, oil, clearing the filter, inspection. All it did from day one is bog, clog, and stall and leave huge clumps 😡🔥👎 The trash-picked 4.0 hp Craftsman no self propel lawn mower never bogged, clogged, or stalled one time and is still in use today. It sipped gasoline instead of guzzling it and blowing the exhaust in your face which the Toro mower did.
