    Great comparison! I have the 2020 version (pre Vortex deck) of this Super Recycler, and my engine does sputter sometimes. Bought it over the HRX because of the stow-n-go (not much storage space at my house), maneuverability, and the shock absorbing handles that are good for bumpy yards. I mostly enjoy it and do not regret the purchase. Mulching quality is right on par with the mid-90s HRB215 and early 2010s HRN that I had prior to that. The 190cc Briggs has what feels like double the power of the standard HRN 160cc Honda motors. My grass is healthy and very thick, and the Briggs has never once stalled on me. The 1990s machine I'd get to stall maybe 1-2x a year, the 160cc HRN, more like 1-2x per mow lol one big con vs the plastic deck Hondas is the amount of grass build up I get, but I guess I would say it's not any worse than the steel deck Honda I had prior to this one.

      Yup. 2020 is like a distant memory now. Prices were still within the universe. That's the Loncin engine right? Black top? Toro needs to up the ante and the consumer needs at least 170 ccs on a mulching mower. 150 can chug in the deep stuff. How's the power. Toro usually uses straight blades for whatever reason.

    May 2024, Honda has stopped making Lawn Mowers. I just called a local dealer, they have two left and I scored the HRX217VKA model! I'll be picking it up early next week. This video helped solidify my decision to go with Honda. I have a mower I bought about 5 years ago and am gifting it to my son. It's a Briggs and Straton engine (as most are) but at every mow it hesitates! The engine likely needs to be tuned up.

      @@GarageGear I did watch that video some time ago. At the time I didn't need a new lawn mower but when mine shit the bed 3 days ago, I went for the HRX217 after watching this video. The engine serial number is GJAVA 1856740 MY01. It's outside the range of serial numbers on the spreadsheet. I also checked the mower serial number on the Honda website for recalls and there weren't any recalls.
      I cut my grass with it last night. Used the bagger on the front yard. Filled it up 4 times! Used mulch mode on the back and did just fine. Couple things I didn't like, unfortunately. There's a short hill section in the back. There must be a clutch on the drive system because it didn't help much at all going up the hill. My old mower is a Husqvarna 725EX AWD with a 190cc engine. It's a beast. The other issue with the Honda drive system is that it's a bit jerky and inconsistent. With the speed dial set, it will sometimes go at that speed and sometimes just take off.
      Other than those two things it did a great job cutting and the mulch was way better than the Husky.
      We also have a Toro at our rental property that I bought new earlier this summer. I don't recall the model but it has the Personal Pace drive and I believe it was around $400 bucks. Don't like that mower much. Mulching wasn't great and it struggled cutting any more than a couple inches off the grass.
      Thanks for reviews! You do a great job!

    Not sure why folks talk about Honda's Xenoy (aka NeXite) decks as if this is a new invention? Honda introduced these composite decks in HRM models in the early 1990s! So yes, they last decades! The wheels on HRX217 have 2 bearings (inner and outer) in each wheel. In VKA, VYA and VLA trim levels, the front wheels are also made heavier due to additional round metal plates inside the wheels. Also, the quality of paint and smoothness of all levers on Honda is really top of the class.

    My new Honda mower has an open belt and pulley (no guard) under the deck. It looked like the Toro had one. That lack of protection could cause premature wear or failure of the drive. I have been wanting a smartstow Toro to save room and now watching this video, that is this same Honda that I am replacing. I am awaiting the Toro 190cc to arrive so I cannot compare them yet, personally. However, I have had that Honda HRX217 for about 8-9 years and still starts first pull. I have super thick grass and keep it at 4" cut without any problems. The deck is a non issue really, it is similar to a football helmet material and those are meant for taking a beating. My Honda still looks brand new. I take care of my sister-in-law's lawn and will leave it over there, so I will get to enjoy both of these mowers. Thanks for these great videos, I ordered the Toro after watchign your review video on it.
    P.S. - I do the annual maintenance on the Honda religiously and keep an extra sharpened blade on hand to rotate every few cuts (I am a lawn nut). One thing I am struggling with is the thought of the "no oil change" Toro marketing. I believe I will end up removing the annual used oil and replacing it, but haven't made up my mind yet.

    I have had the same Honda for about a year now and agree completely with all of your opinions, especially about the underside of the deck. Lots of places for grass clippings to accumulate. But, that is my only complaint. Hands down, the most powerful walk behind mower I have used. I cut 3 lawns with really thick St. Augustine grass and it is very rare that it has an issue. One thing you might have left out, does the Toro have a fuel shutoff? That can be a huge carburetor saver long term.

The Toro seems to have a bit more power and will drag you around on a trailer if you could find a hitch point, but that Honda is just a lovely machine too, with perfect lawn stripes and cleaner cut. I even tried both in the rain and both gave perfect results. Beggared for choice after putting up with dodgy mowers for a couple of years. BTW, how do you get rid of old mowers which still work just fine but are ratty compared to both of my new ones? Probably could leave them on the sidewalk with a sign, 'FREE to good Home'.

I searched the web (including RUclips); found a video with the exact same problem. the noise was coming from the pull start (the pull start worked, but the ticking was annoying). I ordered a new pull start for around $25 + tax and the issue was fixed. This has been the most reliable lawnmower I have owned. My first was a Craftsman that lasted about 5 years . I bought a Honda HRX in 2021. Overall big fan. I will say, while the Mulch/Bag adjustment seems like a good idea, if you have a finer grass like Bermuda you'll still wind up with clippings accumulating in the discharge port when fully on Mulch setting (along with a little bit of discharged clippings coming out of the back). Feels like Honda could have solved this with some sort of weather stripping or just better seal for the adjuster. It's not a huge pain, but doesn't match the usual Honda engineering standard.

      Hey Tom can’t go wrong grabbing a set of wheels, an auto choke actuator, and maybe a back up carburetor with some extra air filters. You’ll be set for a VERY long time! 👍

    I have both of these mowers. One other thing Toro has over Honda is that it mulches leaves better with its higher deck.

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Год назад

      Yep it’s how the mower pulls the grass up with the blade as it cuts! Usually it’s really good in bag mode or side discharge!

  • @neoretrophoto9198
    @neoretrophoto9198 7 месяцев назад

    Used the Honda once - even in the full mulch setting clipping are shooting out the back and collecting in the rear bag area - I’m returning it - faulty design with air gaps that surround the plastic “adjustable mulch plug”. Lots of good about the mower but the multi clip adjustment is no good if you want to mulch 99% of the time.

    I have a Honda 190cc HRX 217 that is about 12yrs old, and a 32yr old cast aluminum Toro Recycler with the tiny 121cc Suzuki 2-cycle engine and 3-speed transmission. I have some bumps in the yard and the Honda is kind of bouncy and feels a bit top heavy compared to the old Toro. I think the Toro is a few pounds heavier and most of the weight is in the deck, and the Honda has a lighter deck and larger heavier motor that stands much higher off the deck. The Honda does make more power, but it is more than needed.
    The Honda is a great mower, but the old Toro mulches better and leaves a much better finished cut. I am not a fan of Honda's select drive or Toro's Personal Pace. I like old school 3-speeds, but I have never tried Hondas Hydrostatic transmissions. If I bump into an old 1990's cast aluminum Honda HR 215 on the cheap I'm grabbing it. I'm not feelin' Honda's Nexite so much even though I am a HUGE Honda fan. Been driving Honda's for 27yrs, and my old Accord saved my life 23yrs ago.

    I bought a HRX217HYA. Ran for 20 min. When I tried to start it up again the pull cord was stuck and almost ripped my arm off. I guess it’s a common issue for the cam assembly/decompression.
    Have you had any experience with this issue?
    Dealer told me Honda was making warranty repairs difficult, taking about 2-3 months of going back and forth just to get Honda to approve repairs.

    How would you compare this Toro model to a new HRN series Honda? For comparison would be nice to know. Also, there are complaints supposedly with the changes Honda made in the last few years about grass getting stuck in the belt area and causing transmission issues? I'm Honda guy with a 17 year old HRN and it's about ready to be replaced and I'm trying to figure out what to go with. My old HRN doesn't seem to have enough power at times and I'm wondering if I need to step up to a HRX or the newer 170 CC engine will be big enough to notice a difference on the HRN.
    Sorry for all the questions trying to figure out what seriously look at. Especially at 5000 ft I do lose power.
    Thanks!!!

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Год назад +1

      Hey Daniel! First I have not had any issues with grass and the belt. I don’t know what’s causing this to happen to people but I mow twice a week with no problems. Perhaps if you are mowing a ridiculously long lawn this could be the case but I don’t see any issues mowing my lawn when it’s longer. The 170cc engine has plenty of power and is actually pretty fuel efficient. Hope this helps you out!

    I would definitely go with the Honda, BUT, Honda isn't making new lawn mowers anymore - last year 2024 I think - they will be out of the lawn mower business - too bad. I have a 16 year old Honda, still running well and always keep it in the shed, so no rusting and looks good. Someday I will need to replace it, then I'm stuck with inferior products to choose from, too bad again. Can you tell us what could is better than a Toro, rather than a Honda? I don't mind paying $600 to $700 for lawn mower, not more, what are other top of the line mowers? By the way I remember paying a little over $300 for my old Honda, just to give context. Great Analysis!

    The Toro ground speed control is the best by far because it is fully automatic. Walk faster and the mower speed increases. Walk slower and the mower speed decreases. With the Honda you have to constantly coordinate your hands and walking speed, and the speed levers are very hard on my arthritic thumbs. My Honda engine would not restart when hot, so the electric start was useless. The Toro with blade brake does not need to restart when hot. These factors were big enough to make me give away my 2 year old Honda and buy the Toro.
