I looked at a Toro Super Recycler yesterday at my local Toro dealer and I thought it was peculiar/odd that the right front wheel did not touch the ground. A defect??
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
The sputtering is easy to fix and has three causes. First, the spark plug boot may not be pushed all the way on. Second, it only comes with only enough oil to fill to the bottom of the acceptable oil fill zone on the dipstick. The engine has an oil level switch and won't run if too little oil is in it. Mow on a hill or hit a bump and the oil sloshes and the oil level switch momentarily turns off, killing the engine for a second. Just add more oil up to to the top of the hashed area on the dipstick. Finally, the factory Champion plugs just misfire. Take your spark plug out and replace it with correct E3 brand spark plug, (E3.20 on mine). Be sure to carefully set the spark gap to what the manual says (0.020" on mine). Regarding the slight variation in wheel height, the wheels have ball bearings and tighter tolerances. With plain bearing wheels there is more bearing play and that lets all wheels touch the floor, therefore you can't detect any wheel diameter difference. Not an issue at all when on grass as the grass is springy. Good mower. Much more nimble than the steel deck versions. I have long arms so the lower handle does not hit my gut. If you have short arms or a big gut, I would not recommend it.
During the 1st mow with my brand new 190cc super recycler using the supplied toro oil it sputtered and complained like everybody says. Changed the oil to mobil 1 synthetic and an E3 plug and its a different mower! Just completed a 3rd mow and absolutely no sputtering. using reg 87 octane pump gas In regards to the "3 wheel off balance" issue, if you note in the manual, to achieve a particular mow height, the front wheels will have a different notch than the rear wheels. I followed these directions and all 4 wheels are firmly in contact with my garage floor. Good luck with this very picky mower!
@@GamerNxUSN Have you ever been to a gas station? For the lower grade gas is always regular! Non ethanol always says non ethanol or ethanol free. Regular unleaded is just that regular unleaded. WOW
I bought mine in 2023, I stored it for the winter, left the gas in. This Spring when I went to run it for a few mins to warm up the oil to change. It started up fine, then it started high revving, then the engine seized. I took the mower back to where I bought it. They said because the oil had metallic specs, they couldn’t do anything for me except sell me a new mower at their cost ($750 ish). I am glad I had an older Super Recycler (20038) as a back up. For the new one, the first couple of times it ran fine, no sputter but it did show up before the end of the season.
@@GarageGear I plan on contacting other dealers or Toro and see if they can help. If not I’ll try and fix it myself. I don’t feel I should shell out hundreds of dollars for another mower for something that might have 15 ish hours on it.
Proud owner of a 21564 as of 4 hours ago thanks to your videos. Just like you warned. One front wheel spinning freely while the other three are resting on the garage floor. Also, the spark plug boot wasn't even close to being seated on the plug. How can this consistently be a problem before being boxed and shipped out? I got my mower preassembled from a very respected dealer and they obviously didn't catch the plug boot issue. Thanks to your videos I knew exactly what I was getting into and what to look for and address. I'm pretty excited to mow after taking it for a dry run around the driveway. Personal Pace worked very well and disengaged when it was supposed to when backing up. Keep up the videos coming!!!!!!
After 11 years I had it with my Husqvarna. Engine still runs well but for the last 2 years I’ve been dealing with a hole where the wheel fits the deck causing the deck to drop no matter the amount of JB weld products. I spent some time trying to figure out if I wanted to go with the new Toro Super Recycler 21565 or the Honda HRX217VKA. Ultimately I chose the Toro mainly due to the aluminum deck and Honda leaving the outdoor equipment scene. Hopefully I made the right call. They sure are expensive these days.
I have the 2021 190cc, mine came with side discharge but it's on the side, not from the back. Seems pretty unsafe that it's coming from the rear so close to the legs. Down south we got some thick St. Augustine and even after 3-4 weeks of not mowing with heavy rain and fertilizer, the 190cc cuts through it like butter. I don't have the "vortex" but I still love the machine. The Engine surges, but I put High octane gas in it and it doesn't sputter. Seems to sputter on hotter days as well. Great vid.
Another great video Jb! I have the exact same mower and have been using it since March, and have no sputtering... 1 helpful suggestion for those that own it, to help make the plastic carburetor last longer, put a fuel shut off valve on it and shut the fuel off when you're done mowing for the day and let the mower run till it runs out the fuel in the carb. Then pull the starter rope a few times to purge the carb.
Agree on all your observations completely. Always a big fan of spiral shaped decks for vacuum action on clippings to get multiple chops on them as they're suspended. That requires a powerful engine and someone who doesn't try to mulch a wet lawn. Snapper did that really well. Briggs marketing an engine that never needs an oil change is just a ploy to generate parts sales IMO.
I purchased the same mower and found that it sputtered and surged after 15-20 minutes of mowing. The dealer replaced the carb at the recommendation of Briggs, but it did not solve the problem. The dealer finally found that the gas cap was not venting properly and that solved the problem. Hope this helps someone! UPDATE: Unfortunately, after mowing yesterday I had the same sputtering problem. After mowing for a few minutes the engine started to miss, and then after continuing to mow for 20 minutes the sputtering started all over. So far, new carb, new vented gas cap and new spark plug have not fixed the problem. Back to the dealer tomorrow! 2nd UPDATE On the third trip to the dealer, Briggs had them change the coil and that seems to have solved the problem. Hope this helps someone.
I’ve mowed with this exact mower for 2 seasons, one thing I wanna mention the wheel axles are plastic. If you mow on a long incline ( like a river bank) I have split out the wheels twice. The fix: put radiator clamps, that, when tightened around plastic axles, will hold the split wheels axles permanently so you can mow on inclines without gear’s slipping. The wheels should’ve had metal sleeves around them in 1st place. I guess toro wants to sale more parts!😂
I have the 60v version of your mower and everything you said also applies to it. I will say its mulching capability is superb. We have had a lot of rain and even in damp conditions, this mower mulches flawlessly.
I have a similar model I bought new last July. About 2 months ago, the engine would stall out like it is running out of gas.(even though the tank is almost full). Brought it to the Toro service center and after having it for 3 weeks, they said they cleaned the carb. After paying $110.00 for that, got it home and did the same thing, stall out. Brought it back to the service center almost a month ago and still waiting to get it back. From what I read on Toro owner's group blog, sounds like the coil went bad. Anxious to get it back and see how it runs.
Hey just fishing, I want to say that this is a carburetor issue. A broken coil usually wouldn’t even let the mower start to begin with. Let me know what you find out. 👍
I looked at the new Roybi $800 all wheel drive yesterday at Home Depot. it came with two batteries. Also you get either a free trimmer or blower with another two batteries. I’m still on the fence on battery mowers. My six year old Toro is still working, but needs a few things I give it a workout each week. I saving my money this summer for a replacement.
@GarageGear This man, I priced out the Makita xgt mower, trimmer, and blower and it came out to be over 2k and that's without any extra batteries. When the price is too good to be true walk away. You get what you pay for.
nice machine all in all.....But people dump on Craftsman products....I am on my 3rd season with my Craftsman M270 mower....great machine....has not given me a lick of trouble.....it too has electric start utilizing craftsmans v20 battery system.....and it starts just as fast....I love it.....and the battery will last all season without needing charged.
I have the 190cc B&S on my 2008 Toro 20092 model- this year is it's 16th season and never had sputtering. I'm getting a new one and giving it to my son for his new house. I've changes the oil maybe twice, otherwise have always just topped off, maybe 2 air filters and until the 15th season, always used 87 octane & 10% ethanol fuel- with no issues- starts fast always. I'm either lucky or it's rock solid!
@@GarageGear Any plans on reviewing the NEW Ariens Razor Reflex Dual Blade mower? They're getting back in the walk behind mower market and seems to be trying to go after Toro.
Your lucky yours came out of the box and RUNS! I traded in my 2 year 3 month old Toro "Recycler" after 4 visits to a lawn equiptment sales/service shop to be looked at (the last 2 were to a Toro dealer) . The first season was ok, the rest of the time was awful! Sputtering and not starting after taking a short break and trying to restart it, I was pushing in the plug boot just in case. After trading it in I bought the Toro Super Recycler #21564 for $900.00!! I took it home and noticed 2 drops of oil right under and behind the muffler, I thought it was because it was just preped. The next morning I started it, after"3" pushes on the electric start, it started but smoked like crazy then setteled down. But it was surging/sputtering then I looked as I started mowing and I was able to look over the engine in front and saw a few more drops of oil, I went a little more and saw a little trickle of oil I stopped immediately, I just couldn't believe my bad luck a brand new mower! I was beyond mad. I called the dealer and had them pick it up, the driver tried to start it and after 5 pushes on the electric start he tried to pull started it, NO luck. I don't know what to do I think I deserve another new mower but I don't think it will happen, any advise??
I've got a "20" Super Recycler. Two big issues with it; #1 Sprays out a ton of clippings on the Left side, getting packed down by the rear wheel. #2 when pulling backwards, no mulch what so ever. Cut 2", you've got 2" trimmings left on the lawn has you pull the mower back. Was wondering if the front vent helps with that ? Both the Dealer I got it from and Toro totally deny this problem exists.
Hey jada! The vent on the front is really just a gimmick! It barely does anything from why I notice. I did notice some clippings when pulling back as well but overall not too bad.
I gotta say that’s a sexy mower. Side discharge needing to be ordered it pretty smart. Also, never saw a side discharge like that. I usually cut grass that’s super long and thick so the side discharge always gets clogged.
Great review. Answered couple of questions on how it operates & as others have said, sort of disappointed in the design, especially on the engine. Want great cut quality, but with a mower that will be confident with for many years. Do not have a self-propelled mower, but moving to one soon. May have to revisit your review on the Honda HRX. Tks
I got my 21564 online from Home Depot. It was shipped to me from Toro in El Paso. I noticed the engine build date is September 2021. Is that typical? Seems odd that it’s been sitting around for a couple years. I’m still debating returning it before 30 days runs out. The engine does not like bumps or slopes. If I’m careful not to fill the tank past about 3/4 it behaves better. I called Toro to ask if any service bulletins and they referred me to a dealer. I called the local dealer and they would not tell me if any bulletins unless I bring it in and pay $42 diagnostic fee!
Hey Stuart I would return it and probably grab another one! In the meantime you could get a used mower to get the job done while you wait for a new one to arrive! 👍
Yes Home Depot will send you old mowers. I hope you sent it back. We bought a riding mower from them in 2019 and it must have been sitting outside for two seasons. It's a piece of junk that no one can fix.
I have a 11 year old super recycler. Back when all 4 wheels are the same height. Plus I think it’s a 7 gross Torque engine. In your opinion do you think a 2024 model with all the new features plus a 8 gross torque engine would be a decent upgrade? Our yard is very uneven and bumpy so my mower stops in its tracks at times so I wonder if 10 inch rear wheels with extra traction would help a little.
Hey Charlie! The bigger back wheels would help with easier turning. I would keep that older model over buying a new one though! The older ones are built better! The new ones have issues backing up which I did a video on!
@@GarageGear ah ok. It’s a shame newer models have issues. A more powerful engine plus all the other newer features would have been nice. By the way. Would you happen to know what dual blade accelerators are? I will say too the older style personal pace handle is nice.
@@Charlie157-lb1et hey Charlie! They’re just not built as good as they used to be. The dual blade accelerator is an additional piece with wings that helps kick clippings around more for better mulching. It usually attaches over the blade on toros.
Disregarding mulching (I’m a bag guy) which way do you go, this or a Honda HRX HZA? I’ve always had Toro units but this is my last mower purchase so I want to get it right and a buck or two isn’t the issue…
Hey Scott! Can’t go wrong with a Honda! The mower bags very well and even gives you the option the mulch some in The process if you really wanted to! Thanks for watching
Hi, i just got this exact mower and mowed my yard for the first time today. The engine sputtered constantly almost the entire time and about 7-9 times I'd say it felt like the engine was going to totally die.... It never did, it always recovered but it sounded terrible. Any suggestions? I checked the spark plug boot and it seems like it's pushed in all the way to me...
I had a customer give me a 2011 version of this exact mower. Haven't tried to service and start it up yet, but knowing that I have one of the older, better engines makes me not so worried that it won't run after sitting for 2 years
Hey nurionz that’s a great question! Both models cut remarkably well! I have had zero issues with my Honda in the last three years. The aluminum deck will outlast the Honda deck though! I’ll be doing a comparison video. Probably in the near future!
I like everything about my Super Recycler except the Personal Pace. I feel like I’m pushing the mower and I’m exhausted when finished. I have neighbors with the same mower and they have the same complaint. We all had Snappers before and the self propelled system was much better. Looking to get rid of it! Should I try the Honda?
Depending on they Honda the drive systems aren’t too different than the super recycler. They have thumb drives. See my videos on them to see if they’ll work for you!
I really dig the look of that mower JB! It really “grinds my gears” to see a pretty well designed mower then skimping on things like the plastic carb, having to register the mower to get the side discharge shoot….really! Not needing to change the oil! Come ON! But the cut looked really nice. Definitely not a fan of the handle bar setup. Great review as always! Have a great weekend. Cheers neighbor!
Hey Jay! This mower could truly dominate if they fine tuned some things! Still a great cut considering! Appreciate you bud! Any barbecue going on lately?
Had a Briggs and Stratton snow blower I bought in 2020 and by 2021 it seized up on me when I was trying to run the unit until gas ran out. Luckily Costco returned it but lesson learned-run the other way when you see Briggs and Stratton.
Yep. I had a blower with a BnS motor and it literally blew up the innards. One day I went to start it and nothing, I changed the oil and gave it a once over and when changing the oil I took out chucnks of metal. I'm talking pieces so big it couldn't come out the oil drain hole.. I searched up what it was but I don't remember off hand what the part was called that cracked and crumbled..
Thanks for your videos. Have a 3 year old all black Toro SR. With blade stop. The bar is a much better design and mower has been pretty awesome. Personal pace and the handle shock absorbers are great especially on my hilly and bumpy yard.
Yep. Those were just starting to change before I got a Super with RWD, Smartstow, handle shocks and personal pace plastic bar. No blade brake on mine thank goodness. I might one day wire a kill switch and delete the operator presence bar. That bar causes wrist damage over the decades. I can prove it. Mowers should have that little wrist strap like a boat has.
That’s a great tip, if your bag deflates it means it’s clogged or full. I know some people don’t know and they end up doing most of the yard with a full bag.
This might be the year to grab em by the Hondas especially if you already have one that blew up. Yeah the prices are 20-30% higher but they are pulling a "farewell" tour. Will sales keep them around for one more round? Who knows? Might be like Motley Crüe or Rolling Stones. I like toro in general and they are great if you can deal with one stupid part like weak side discharge chute or mail in warranty cards😂.. Super secret tip on the $549 honda 216vkaa: ANY brand engine will fit if it fails. 3 5/16" 25mm shaft required. Found on most self propelled models and some mid-range consumer models. Have y'all got a Sams Club? There's a mower in there. I am tapped out for now but it's a 22" self propelled assembled in USA . $379 in my area but it didn't have to travel far. Ok🎉
Just got my toro super recycler 21 inch mower back from a small engine shop I use. It's just me $175.00. the self propelled system was not working. They told me it was the hub that was completely frozen to the shaft. That is the verbiage they used. They had to cut off and heat? Whatever that means? Please explain. Much appreciated.
@@GarageGear photos attached of my super recycler. Hopefully now my personal pace will work properly now. I used to mow like 11 lawns a week as a side job so the mower is shop worn. Many repairs have been done since i purchased. I only mow my lawn now. No question I want to avoid purchasing a new toro super recycler 21 inch mower but i am not going to put any more big $$ into this mower. Thanks
I've been doing alot of homework on todays lawn mowers, have only owned used but now im excited to buy my first ever "Brand NEW" lawn mower and i think this is the one for me
The super recycler with their “bagging blade” is a suction beast. Mulch over leaves and then go over again with the bagger on and it leaves it spotless.
I own a Toro RECYCLER MAX with a 163cc GTS engine. It's the next model down from the super recycler. It comes with a 5 year limited warranty and 5 year GTS warranty. It ran flawlessly out of the box. Filled with premium fuel, ran it for 30 minutes, changed the oil, after 5 hours of usage I change the oil again and it cuts great. I like the personnel pace handle and saved a few $100 bucks from that model.
Good one, JB! The '80s and '90s toros with electric starters (on OHV Suzuki engines) were equipped with alternators (stators) that recharged the battery as you cut.. You could also get a DC wall charger for them, as well.
@@GarageGear I agree with you on everything, btw.. From the individual height adjustment for the wheels, to the carburetor which could potentially warp when hot. I scoff at the "vortex" idea, also. Where I grew up (in West Texas), mulching didn't really catch on when I worked in lawn care (even today, most customers prefer the grass bagged, from landscapers I've talked to). That's the one thing I really disliked doing when mowing for a lawn service. At least the mowers I used had a BBC to make the bag emptying faster, but some of those lawns were so thick you could only make a couple of passes before having to empty the bag! I have to admit that's ONE of the main reasons why I appreciate those old mowers that so few know about today. I love the ergonomics of those old handles so much that I customized one that had a straight handle for one. That steady amount of nitrogen you get from mulching the grass back onto the soil is something every proud lawn owner should know about by now, as it is essential to a healthy lawn and doesn't promote more needless waste. At least Honda did come up with a good idea that omitted the mulch plug, which is all that I admire Honda mowers for (really). You could actually deceive your customer into thinking all the clippings are being bagged! Darn toro for not thinking of it first!!

HELP. (Question for anyone). I love my old Toro AWD (all wheel drive) mower with BTAH (blue traction assist handle) but the new Toro AWD mowers (21472) have baby carriage handle without BTAH. How do I add BTAH. Thank you. Toro's BTAH (Blue Traction Assist Handle) converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward). This is needed on steep hills where you need the AWD Toro mower to pull you and this powerful AWD mower up the hill without any effort on your part. The powerful Toro AWD mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode). Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill even with AWD. It is a shame that Toro has gone (woke not work) with this useless new Toro curved baby carriage handle. IMO. Thank you for your help and understanding this Toro (back breaking) mower issue.
@@GarageGear Yes, my old Toro AWD (with BTAH) mower still works great but it is getting old and I need a backup AWD mower now before the USA dollar becomes worthless.
Honda has a cease of all sales/rentals of their HRX models due to cam shaft problems currently. Also just had a Honda 190cc engine catastrophic failure after only 6 years of residential use with meticulous maintenance each year...piston broke and needless to say, it is no off to the scrap yard nap. Loved the mower, but that’s a big chunk of change to drop on a mower that couldn’t last even with maintenance it got.
Great video. I just received mine and it has the dreaded spinning front wheel. Took the wheel and mounting off and couldn't see any way to easily fix it. Has anyone found a fix to this?
JB if you find any information about which steel carburetor will replace the plastic on on the Toro 21564 190cc. I see allt on Amazon but not sure what model to buy. Thanks for any help.
I've had 3....they last about 5 years ... fall apart in year 3...then replace broken height adjust arms ...several times. Likely I'll get a cub cadet next.
I am thinking of buying it because I have a 12 year old Toro Super Recycler that I have to push now ( no more personal pace) which is really hard because I have arthritis in my knees. I can not decide between Spin-Stop or Electric Start. Excellent review.
Hey Gregory, I get that you may not want to put a lot of $$ into a 12 year old mower, but I personally would try to get it to a reputable repair shop to at least get an estimate. FYI…I have a 14 year old Super Recycler and had my Personal Pace repaired about four years ago and still going. I was told by the repair guy to keep my mower as long as possible as the newer ones are not as good. Good Luck!
Good review, JB!! How pricey is that TORO hotrod?? Since switching to a rider back in 2018 (old age, Lol) I just use my push mower for trim work. It's a 2002 Poulan Pro with a USA-made 6.5 horse B&S with ZERO bells and whistles. 21 years old, and I plan on keeping it another 21+.......... Lol And these manufacturers claiming that you do not have to change the oil is BULL CRAP!! Just a ploy to sell more over-priced, over-engineered crap IMO. (Old man rant over). 🤣😂
Hey Paul!!! This guy runs about $800. I bought it in February for $700 one week before the price hike. 😮💨 got it just in time! Keep that old baby running! Planned obsolescence my friend that’s what they’re after! They got to keep you coming back! I’m over here ranting too my friend! Have a good bud!
I have this mower, but don't have a fence like JB. The bigger handle only gets in the way a bit in one part of my yard and overall, I can't really complain about it. I don't think it's a deal breaker.
I hate the side discharge and much prefer how the Honda HRN216 shoots the grass out the back and straight down into the lawn. Can you do that with this lawn mower?
Hey JB, great review as always. My experience with Toros, about 45 years worth, is similar. The poor engineering on the discharge chute is typical of my experience with the brand. Honda still better… have a great day!👍

Ah ok. Thanks for the info. Too bad….Toro used to be great. Guess I’ll try electric then. I have about 12 Makita LXT batteries so maybe I’ll try a Makita mower.
I’ve seen people have mowers with the newer-style Briggs engines, and many of them still work fine after ten years only because they actually changed their oil and maintained them. Their Intek engines and OHV engines simply never were as solid as the flathead ones, and they go cheap with the plastic components. It is disappointing as I will always prefer the older ones.

I like this mower, but I don't like the Briggs Engine. Ever since Briggs started to mass produce cheap plastic engines, I have not been a fan of them. They don't last like they used to. The old Flat head Briggs Stratton were higher quailty than these new engines. Toro deck and featers are great, just wish it had a better engine on it.

@@johnwrigley1624 The trick is making sure the manufacturer has a blade that fits your particular mower it seams. I watched the Project farm video and the Oregon blade came out on top but doesn't have a blade that fits my Toro. The search continues 😁
Question about that flimsy rubber flap dragging along the mower. (Not sure what it’s called) Is that really necessary? When I back the unit up, it folds under the mower. Kind of annoying. Never had one on previous lawnmowers or don’t remember and it broke off.
Hey apex that is a drag flap that prevents rocks and other objects from shooting out the back. Mine seems to get hung up from time to time too. Could trim an inch off and see if that helps it move back and forth better.
You didn't like the handle bar but yet you used it at the 1:15 mark to maneuver the mower. Could this handle bar have other uses ? Also Im not sure if you covered how the foot guard works when backing up , could you comment on that.
Hey bill I don’t like how bulky it is. The assembly is huge for no reason really. The foot guard drags along as you make your passes. As you back up it will go under the mower. As you go forward again it should slide back out and drag behind. Thanks for watching
Another great review JB! I've been a big Toro fan for years but they really dropped the ball on that handle bar! Who wants to push a stroller around on the lawn?😂😂 If they tell you the oil doesn't need to be changed just add it. That means the engine is designed to burn it....🤔👎 Gimmick!

Big bumps it can be a little stop and go but overall not bad! Totally agree with the gear selector! Nice that you can stand off to the side and let it go! 👍
What do you mean you tested this on tall grass? You couldn't find tall grass if you wanted. By the looks of it, each blade of grass on your lawn is within .03cm of each other all year around. 😅 😉 Edit: I'll prove it, I'm coming over there with a micrometer. 😊

I’m on my 2nd HRX217 in 3 weeks. Both had compression release issues. Weingartz told me Honda is aware and issuing a service bulletin but not sure when the fix will be available. Returning for a 2023 Toro Super Recycler.
Question. I’ve had my 21564 for a year now. The rear trailing flap is holding on with hopes and dreams. Is there an upgraded flap? Is the stock blade good or is there a better upgraded blade that you would recommend? I only mulch. Great review and this video, along with the comparison to the Honda, help me make my decision on which to choose.
@@psychewardk1d hey psych! Not sure about an upgraded flap but they are cheap to replace. I would probably cut it down an inch though making it easier to flip back and forth. The stock blades all seem to cut fine for me on these as long as they are sharp. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@GarageGearThank you for the response! Just looked and the flaps are pretty cheap. I wonder if making a cut up the middle would help alleviate the stresses on the flap when making turns. Essentially two flaps that won’t put stress across the entire piece. I’ll give a it a shot. I do think the blade is pretty good, I was just wondering if there were any aftermarket options. Thanks again and keep up the great work! Bought our first house last year and it was a new build with no lawn.
Thanks again for sharing these tips!
During the 1st mow with my brand new 190cc super recycler using the supplied toro oil it sputtered and complained like everybody says. Changed the oil to mobil 1 synthetic and an E3 plug and its a different mower! Just completed a 3rd mow and absolutely no sputtering. using reg 87 octane pump gas
In regards to the "3 wheel off balance" issue, if you note in the manual, to achieve a particular mow height, the front wheels will have a different notch than the rear wheels. I followed these directions and all 4 wheels are firmly in contact with my garage floor. Good luck with this very picky mower!

You're asking for trouble using ethanol! Bad bad bad
@@pmaint1 he said regular...which usually means non ethanol

Nothing seems to come cheap nowadays other than cheaply made lol
I have the 2021 190cc, mine came with side discharge but it's on the side, not from the back. Seems pretty unsafe that it's coming from the rear so close to the legs.
Down south we got some thick St. Augustine and even after 3-4 weeks of not mowing with heavy rain and fertilizer, the 190cc cuts through it like butter.
I don't have the "vortex" but I still love the machine. The Engine surges, but I put High octane gas in it and it doesn't sputter. Seems to sputter on hotter days as well.
Great vid.
Thanks for sharing all of this Conrad!
Hey Keith great plan! I may have to make a video on this to share with everyone! Thanks for sharing! 👍
Can you help me with where to buy or model, for the fuel shut off
Agree on all your observations completely.
Hey g! 💯 agree with you on the briggs! Planned obsolescence! Thanks for watching!
UPDATE:
Unfortunately, after mowing yesterday I had the same sputtering problem. After mowing for a few minutes the engine started to miss, and then after continuing to mow for 20 minutes the sputtering started all over. So far, new carb, new vented gas cap and new spark plug have not fixed the problem. Back to the dealer tomorrow!
2nd UPDATE
On the third trip to the dealer, Briggs had them change the coil and that seems to have solved the problem. Hope this helps someone.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing this John!
Mine is back at the dealer with same issues.
Thanks for sharing this information my friend!
I have the 60v version of your mower and everything you said also applies to it. I will say its mulching capability is superb. We have had a lot of rain and even in damp conditions, this mower mulches flawlessly.
The mulching ability of this machine is incredible! Thanks for watching LL

Your lucky yours came out of the box and RUNS!
Those side discharges have been used by some other brands in the past but you’re right they don’t clog! 👍
Tks
Hey nibs appreciate your positive feedback! I’ll be doing a comparison between the two mowers soon! ! We’ll see who comes out on top!

Hey floor! I would try checking the carb or take it back. Thanks for watching!
I had a customer give me a 2011 version of this exact mower. Haven't tried to service and start it up yet, but knowing that I have one of the older, better engines makes me not so worried that it won't run after sitting for 2 years
The older ones are definitely better!
From your experience which mower would you recommend. A honda Hrn or super recycler? Does the super recycler design mulch better than twin blade?
Mine did the same thing until I adjusted the drive cable to make sure at fully travel the PP fully engages the drive belt.

Good one, JB!
The '80s and '90s toros with electric starters (on OHV Suzuki engines) were equipped with alternators (stators) that recharged the battery as you cut.. You could also get a DC wall charger for them, as well.
Those were AWESOME machines. Hard to find now a days. Have a great day my friend.

FYI…I have a 14 year old Super Recycler and had my Personal Pace repaired about four years ago and still going. I was told by the repair guy to keep my mower as long as possible as the newer ones are not as good.
Good Luck!
@@rooster7996 Thanks I may try that.
Lol
And these manufacturers claiming that you do not have to change the oil is BULL CRAP!!
@@GarageGear Good LORD!
My first car didn’t cost that much.

@@paulmysliborski4832 hahaha I know right! these mower prices are getting crazier Bills Tailgate lol!
Just bought this lawnmower today and will break it in as you explained. Question.. would you add Motorkote to the engine?
Hey apex. I would not. Oil or additive?
Thanks! Go Bills!!
Great review, nice garage door!
Appreciate you Ken! Thanks for watching!
Good points on the handlebar set up. It should definitely be more compact. Other than that looks like a pretty good machine.
Overall, it’s not bad, Smallblock. I like everything on it except for the handlebars.
Hey Jeremy you’ll need the side discharge chute for this one. Without it it will shoot it right into the back cover and not down! Thanks for watching
@@GarageGear Thanks for the info! I would love to see you do a comparison between this mower and the Honda HRN216 if you still have it!
Hey JB, great review as always. My experience with Toros, about 45 years worth, is similar. The poor engineering on the discharge chute is typical of my experience with the brand. Honda still better… have a great day!👍
Thanks for following along. Can’t go wrong with a Honda!
@@GarageGear any rumors that Honda will stop making gas mowers? I believe the toro personal pace is nicer. Toro just needs to raise their bar higher in all around quality. Do you agree? Thanks your vids are awesome
@@brodygoalie hey Brody! Toro is done in September! If toro were to raise their quality they could really dominate the mower market! Appreciate you bud!
@@GarageGear what do you mean Toro is done in September? Thanks
@@brodygoalie my bad! I meant Honda!
Great video. Reviews aside, what is your weekly go to lawn mower/recycler when it's all said and done??
Great question! I bounce between my John Deere jx75, my toro commercial 21” and I’ll use my Honda hrn too because that has the striping kit on it! 👍👍👍 what are you mowing with?
That engine has been around in some form well over a decade. It was used on the weed eater one rear engine rider. And many "pro" model mowers that had caster front wheels.Good to hear about that gotcha handlebar. RIP kidneys. Lol
Hahah rip kidneys lol! Thanks again for watching marsh!
Jb looking into the three wheel issue Toro could make a replacement front pivot arm and just lower the hole where the axle bolt goes
They could do that! That would be nice to see
I heard a rumor that Honda might be teaming up with Toro in the future to have a toro mower with a Honda engine.. not sure if that’s true.. but we shall see..
We will see! Could be interesting!
The best walk behind self-propelled mower is a Snapper with the disk drive system. Period.
@@blumobean thanks for sharing
Good review...but do we see an insulated garage door video in our future??
Time will tell, Mace. What’s the plan for the weekend, brother?
Best mower I ever bought. Mine is all black. So far, my only complaints is that the fuel tank is not big enough, and the individual height adjustors.
Great 93! Thanks for sharing!
JB. I’m getting ready for the 2024 season. Need a new mower. I have a 2015 SR since new that is just ok, but noticeably underpowered for my new lawn. Do you still recommend this new Toro?
Hey Mixing! I do not recommend this mower. It has a serious issue backing up that gets super annoying. Here is a video on that WHY DOES MY TORO SUPER RECYCLER 21564 NOT BACK UP?
ruclips.net/video/Ay8dEhTBwFs/видео.html
@@applianceman6009 same here my friend👍
Can't find this model anywhere. Any links?

Im trying to buy a lawnmower to start a small business but im dumb as hell trying to learn whatsup also just found out lawnmowers are expensive as hell
They ain’t getting any cheaper! I would overlook a good used one either!
That intake is hilarious. They had a good product with the previous model. Plastic carbs are life. 😋
Their older recyclers were great!
Just picked one up so far it seems good, my short wife has some issues with the handlebar Hight.
Thanks for sharing my friend!
My local Toro dealer and long time buddy said 90% claims and repairs that come in are on the Toro Walkers from Lowes.

@@GarageGear Dealers, at least mine have same price points anyway. No reason to go to Lowe's. They are put together and thrown outside by clerks that aren't invested in the quality of the equipment land experience like a dealer is. (In my experience)
@@mr.rogers7612 totally agree Mr Roger’s!

Glad I kept my 1998 Lawn Boy with spare everything! Plastic parts & the handle really would prevent me from buying one of these.
Glad it has held up for you this long. Enjoy the mow!
That's an awkward looking place for a side chute, but I might still buy the mower
Some older mowers used to do the same thing. Thanks for watching!
would you reccomend this 23' model or is the 20' model the way to go?
I would say the 2020 toro super recycler deck was a little better! 👍
@@GarageGear what the most you’d pay for a used only for a month per owner 20’super recycler ? He’s asking 610$ which I think is too much ? Thanks man ! (Sry for duplicate comment)
@@jt31713 probably $400! 👍
wish they made one with a Honda! i’m sure you would appreciate that
Oh yeah! That would be a win!
Perhaps Toro could buy the rights for the Honda mower... it could be their Premium line.
That would be a smart play! 👍
Great information.
Hows the bagging performance on the Super Recycler? Ive read that grass can get clogged in the ramp that leads up to the bag since it is at such a steep angle.
Hey kmc! Bagging has been fine for me! That hasn’t been an issue for me. Perhaps if the grass was really long! Bag blows right up and deck suction is good! 👍
@@GarageGearthat is great to hear. Thank you!
I mostly mulch but do bag sometimes. I just remember reading somewhere somebody saying the bag doesn't fill up or gets clogged.
@@kmc8765 you got it kmc!

Actually… totally impressed with the bagging
I like this mower, but I don't like the Briggs Engine. Ever since Briggs started to mass produce cheap plastic engines, I have not been a fan of them. They don't last like they used to. The old Flat head Briggs Stratton were higher quailty than these new engines. Toro deck and featers are great, just wish it had a better engine on it.
100% agree. Thanks for watching!
They don’t want it to last long b/c they need to sell those ridiculous battery mowers. Thanks for the content, I was thinking about buying a Toro so I don’t get stuck with battery lawn mower, I can see these are garbage. B&S suck big D
They have gone downhill for sure!
Do you have an opinion on masport mowers, have you used them, tested etc
Hey SA! Never used one before but would like to test one out!
Always wondered why they don't make it in the 22 inch version?...i'll keep my 2009 Recycler for now and yes that new handle bar system is goofy.
Yep keep it for now! I just don’t understand that handle bar design! Big and bulky for no reason!
The old Briggs flat head engine in 60s even had a plastic carb
Thanks for sharing briggs
How do you change the oil when the gas cap can’t lock and seal it, once you tilt it on it’s side the gasoline starts leaking out.
You’ll need to put the mower in the stow position to change the oil. It won’t leak from that position.
@@GarageGear noted I saw a few videos on the Briggs and Stratton gas cap issue and the solution is to add an O ring size 1 3/4 OD, 1 1/2 ID, 1/8 width, you should advise all your viewers. Btw I’m a new subscriber and love all your videos!
@@nelly8058 appreciate you nelly
JB have you put Toro on notice about only three wheels touching the ground? If you do please post what they say.
Not yet perhaps I should! 🤔
I slotted the hole on the wheel bracket, so I can lower the high wheel, it sits level now.
Hopefully Toro will redo the negatives you have mentioned. Going to wait until they fix these issues.
We can only hope. Thanks for watching!
Do you know of any replacement blades for a Toro21 inch that would be an upgrade over the factory blade? I don't think I'm getting enough lift with the factory blade.
See Project Farm , mower blade testing. Oregon Mulching for high CC engines or get Maxpower Mulching or Maxpower 3 in 1 blades.
@@joewger Nice! Thanks bud.
Project Farm has a good video on that.
I use the "gator" style blade for a Lawn Boy. Direct fit on my Super Recycler.
(Not sure what it’s called)
Is that really necessary? When I back the unit up, it folds under the mower. Kind of annoying.
Never had one on previous lawnmowers or don’t remember and it broke off.
Definitely going to remove that annoying rubber flap.
Why remove the flap? It’s a rock guard and it lays a decent stripe
Hey apex that is a drag flap that prevents rocks and other objects from shooting out the back. Mine seems to get hung up from time to time too. Could trim an inch off and see if that helps it move back and forth better.
Thanks JB.
@@apexiumim2741 the Hondas have a rubber one that travels better under the mower. Thanks for watching apex!

Is that garage door insulated now, nice job JB?
It is fully insulated and sounds a bit different too. Will make for those winter filming days a little easier.
