Brilliant picture quality - well done. A tremendous performance from Pebbles considering she was stopped several times in the final half mile trying to get thru on the rail. Yet she put the race to bed in a matter of strides. If memory serves me right, she was 20/1 on the US tote and commentator for ITV Brough Scott persuaded the entire British crew to put their dosh on the horse. Scott won enough to fly home to the UK on Concorde. When you bet, bet like a man!
Excellent ground saving ride by Edderly, turned out to be the difference! Some excellent sires in this race, including Strawberry road, Greinton, and Theatrical..♥️🙏👉🇺🇸
@Paul Gallagher Pat on Rainbow Quest, 85 Coronation Cup when he plays w other jockey, before Cruising to victory, Peebles Champion Stakes, Golden Fleece's Derby. To many Classic rides to mention, it would hurt my finger to keep typing😁
This race always brings a tear to my eye because of the guy jumping up and down right before the winning post. Not sure who he is but I always assumed he was Pebbles' groom.
SpursFanCanada hi mate just read your comment on the man jumping up and down at the winning post.your correct he was pebbles groom his name was John Harkness who is my wife’s dad
I worked for Mecca Bookmakers at the time, and nobody was surprised. She'd already won the Eclipse Stakes when many people hadn't given her a chance - first filly to win it in 100 years. There were so many good horses around at the time: Commanche Run, Slip Anchor, Rainbow Quest, Oh So Sharp, Tryptich, Damister, Palace Music, Theatrical etc - a great time for racing and they all had great followings. Oh So Sharp and Pebbles - two of the greatest English fillies of all time (I think that Tryptich was American?)!! The Champions Stake was probably the best race - everyone was talking Slip Anchor versus Commanche Run, and Pebbles beat them both. I can still remember most of the races. What an era!!!
I recall that day thinking there was no way Eddery would get through that wall of horses. And usually, if you have to keep pulling up on a horse they lose interest but Pebbles was a little stronger than most.
Strawberry Road had the rail spot all the way till half way on the final turn. Pebble took over same spot. If Strawberry Road stayed and waited, could have won along the rail the whole way. Who rode Strawberry Road ?
If Ditman from Australia had been riding Strawberry Road , Pebbles wouldn't have had the opportunity to run the inside rail on the straight. But that's racing.
@@seanmcmanus867 Strawberry Road was a high-class racehorse and appreciated in the US. Mick Dittman was a super strength rider and would have improved the horse's chance, though whether it would have been sufficient is pure conjecture.
Strawberry Road was a decent horse but a fairly ordinary animal against European horses. SR did nothing in the arc. An Aussie jockey on a US course wasn’t deemed good enough. So they put probably the best jockey in the world Steve Cauthen on the horse and still couldn’t win. A decent horse but not great

Pebbles was a great filly but I think what cost Strawberry Road any chance of winning was when she drifted towards Pebbles and Pat Eddery having his whip in his right hand meant SR would be running into it.

Pebbles is a better horse. Strawberry had the run of the race. I know pebbles and Eddery were lucky to get the gap, but pebbles had to put the breaks on a few times around the bend and had to put the accelerator on early in the straight to take the lead. In a match race. In a fast run race I know who I would bet on

great horse and eddery at his absolute best too ....
A Masterclass of a ride from Pat Eddery. But only possible with a gutsy, willing partner, I don't believe any horse would got past Pebbles that day.

A small filly with a giant heart
