"I rode him five times and never got beat with him. He beat all the champions in the Breeder´s cup. When people ask me who´s the best turf horse I´ve ridden, I say Manila" Jose Santos (1961- ) Retired jockey
What a great ride. Jose was along the rail moving up as they entered the turn for home, and looked like he was going to go through, but the lead horse blocked his path and he had to pull Manilla up and then swing to the outside and start running again. You will not see a better ride than this.
9-1 and the only horse I bet that day! Went to the track at 6am placed a significant early bird win wager made it home later in the day and caught the race live from the 1/4 pole!!! Could Not Believe he was 8.90-1.
I had Manila at 9-2 in the UN that year and earlier at Belmont he ran 1-2-3 with entrymates Glow and Pillaster to pay 2.80, 3.80 and 3.40. Accountant friend had 1500 to show on the entry on the grounds all three couldn't run off the board. I skipped this BC wish I hadn't: 8-1 was a steal.
Manila .. arguably the greatest American Turf horse .. if you consider he beat 3 monsters on this day .. Dancing Brave, Estrapade, and 1987 Breeders Cup champ Theatrical. His Arlington Million might have been his most Epic win .. running “Seattle Slew type last furlong” as Cordero put it .. after he was being prepped to take on Trempolino in the Arc (I have no issue he would have won ) but got him injured and retired .. his last furlongs are blitzing in most of his Turf races .. amazing horse 🎩✅
Manila was FANTASTIC to say the least, i could put only one horse ahead of him that ran on the grass and that was the immortal John Henry.......Lastly that field Manila beat in 1986 was loaded, Dancing Brave was one of the five best turf runners that ever lived and Theatrical was awesome and dont forget the filly Estrapade
I'm so tried of hearing all these excuses as to why Dancing Brave lost. Try this excuse: "He didnt like Left Handed racecourses!" Both of Dancing Braves loses (Derby, BC Turf) were on Left Handed Racecourses.
@@mallafetsno it wasnt pilot error, it was the tight left handed course, he was all over the place, by the time they hit the home turn it was just too late, a very Good horse in sharastani had too much of a lead.
Horses for courses, dancing brave's two defeats on tight left handed tracks, would love to have seen the outcome if the American Horses had taken him on in the arc, drug free......
Why did these horses not come to Europe to race. Is it because they may not have passed the juice test. Not one of these horses would of beaten Dancing brave in England or the arc for that matter. Hard to prove but how many American horses have come over here and nailed it. We don't even consider your horses. It seems impossible for a horse to run 2:24 , when most run 2:28. That's impossible and you know which horse I am talking about.
i always think it should be like the ryder cup europe, then america but it would probably be too difficult to set up tho ?? as for dancing brave the whole lead up to this race seemed ominous to me, he was set for defeat before he entered the stalls, his run up to the race was hampered with problems, also the slow early pace , and round and round track was against him. no disrepect to the first three but dancing brave never quickened at all like he usually did. he just ran flat and lifeless just like another legendary horse shergar did when only fourth in his last race the st.leger...
Dancing Brave didnt quicken at all, got dirt in His Eye too. The tactical slow pace didnt suit Him either. After a long Season and this His 7th race , it was a defeat waiting to happen. But Nobody will Ever know had it been in Europe who would have Won , the first three Home were top notch Horses, with the 2nd Theatrical winning this race the following Year ......

great ride Mr. Santos. hope your retirement is going well.
I bet on Manila three times, including a nice jackpot this day -- never lost ...

He got Manila stopped. And dropped his whip too! Great ride?? More like great horse won despite of his jockey.
Manila-The Best American grass horse ever, end of statement!
Doesn't say much
@@quick46 He beat ALL Foreign invader horses as well ...
He was far from the odds on fave that day ...
No, I am!

Dancing Brave was a great European horse, which made him a fair-to-middling horse here in the States (hehe).
Haha Theatrical was not within 14lb of DB.

The BC took the sport to a whole new level.
Some big time turf talent in this field!!!
Yes it was ..
I completely agree with your statement!
One of the greatest grass horses that ever lived, WORLDWIDE!!!!!!!!!
If Manila had been brought to europe, dancing Brave would have toasted him. also triptych, Sharastani and several other european horses of '86
@@stevo62ful they should have it in europe too like the Ryder cup, but no drugs allowed in europe so the americans wouldnt come.....
!!!!
It's no secret that Europe's 2nd best horses come here and do great, however their Champions struggle on our courses.
What a day

The Derby was purely pilot error. The BC was a tired and unwell horse, should never have ran.

American horses can't run clockwise, something kinda like driving on the other side of the road.
