AnnaNicolesDeathbed But he finished 2nd to Secretariat in two TC races. Would Holy Bull have finished closer? I'm talking about performance, not achievement.
AnnaNicolesDeathbed Hahaa I don't know either.. I said it 2 years ago! :P .. Maybe cause I rate Sham so high (like a Timeform 136) and Holy Bull's a 134.. it's interesting to see if people think Sham was on his level :)
Well sort of, but I prefer Timeform to do the work for me :P I'm pretty familiar with how they rate horses, and so I base my own figures on Visual impression (only where Timeform haven't gave a rating i.e prior to the 1980's).. Apparently Secretariat, who many consider the greatest to race on dirt, received a rating of 144 (unofficially of course, he may have been higher..) so I figured as he always beat Sham by 2 or 3 lengths, but with something in hand, Sham may be worthy of 136 (slightly less than AP and California Chrome). For those racing between a mile and 12f, it works out at 2lb a length :) Are you only familiar with Beyer figures? If so, you add 12-14 points to the figure you have, and that's the general equivalent to a Timeform rating, which is mostly popular across Europe, and especially England :)

Holly Bull was a great horse but it is sad that the race he was in against Cigar the Donn Handicap he broke down on the backstretch (ending his career). What would of been the out come of that race? Maybe a dead heat.
As much as I love Holy Bull and admire Tom Durkin, Secretariat ran a 1 1/8 at Belmont in the Marlboro in 145 2/5, hence Holy Bull's 146 4/5 was 1 2/5s off record not 3/5, as Tom stated.
