Mike and Louise Sullivan traveled to Claiborne Farm and got to meet SECRETARIAT in person one on one! So cool that this film was included in the Estate Sale and I am so happy to save it and share it with everyone for historical references.

Great memories! I played with him several times at Claiborne. At 3:25-3:30 you see him pick up a stick, a favorite game of his. We played tug-of-war with one. He loved cameras, + decided when he wanted his picture taken. He even pretended to eat grass, to mess with his grooms or admirers. He was SO smart + fun. Everyone loved him.
The horse with the bite cage was probably Hoist the Flag, great grandson of Man O War. He survived a bad injury, his paddock was close to Secretariat's.

It will be 50 years this year when on June 9, 1973 the day before my 20th birthday he won the Triple Crown winning the Belmont. In my opinion it's the greatest race in horse racing history and by doing so he entered immortality. His time has never been broken. Yeah he was beaten a few times, but when he was right no horse could touch him. Not just another horse, but one of the greatest athletes I have ever seen in my lifetime. One of my biggest regrets and I only have a few is I never got a chance to see him in person.

GREATEST is relative to historical perspective..Eclipse was undefeated and often unchallenged. Citation, Man O'War, Ribot, and others were not any second class group. the mare who won the Melbourne Cup several times, the Hugarnina mare who was undefeated. Many of the older English Champions rivaled his records St Simon, Ormonde, Nearco, Bahram, Pharis then Frankel and Personal Ensign along with Ruffian

Yes, the GOAT for sure! The nay sayers always come up with their rebuttles but no other horse captured the heart of a country, and a good part of the world, the way he did. I don't think any horse could have beaten him that day at the Belmont, and he did it on his own, Ronnie was just along for the ride.

My dad bet me $50 double or nothing that Secretariat would not win the Belmont. Dad paid me $100. @@CamaroKidd2022 He is the Best there ever was and most likely ever will be, that horse moved a nation. I was 10 years old and was at my family's grocery store which was usually packed on a Saturday afternoon and there was no one there and no cars on the road, everyone was home watching Secretariat run the Belmont. We didn't have a customer for like 20 minutes, my dad let me bring a little black and white tv to work and we watched it. The next morning we sold out of the Sunday newspaper in 45 minutes which had Secretariat on the front page. We had hundreds of newspapers and most of the time we would have a few left at the end of the day. People talked about Big Red for weeks. I never seen that store empty before or after . Secretariat is the people's horse. Most people can't name a race horse but they know who Secretariat is.

Nice words right to the matter of fact. Looking and reviewing the Secretariat Saga and Phenomenon as an adult now vs. a 12 year old when it unfolded it seems like it was just a front to shadow his real mission ... it was the Superhorse who singlehandedly humiliated and shamed Nixon and ran him out of the white house. The wrath he unleashed on the fraud began after his spectacular Preakness win, namely the Secretariat for President bumper sticker and button, the other button Breed More Secretariats, that scathing Art Buchwald Secretariat column in newspapers, and his fans calling the planes he flew on Air Horse One. Watergate boiled over at the same time, and all of a sudden nixon was just a caricature to be made fun of especially in Time, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone, just imagine the shame when he beheld the Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated Secretariat issues in his dirty hands. On Belmont Day nixon could not take the heat any longer and fled DC to Florida in to the arms of his favorite crying towel Bebe Robozo. I really believe that nixon rooted against him that day, and the humiliating wrath of the Superhorse reached its zenith when he was crowned KIng on June 9. When he returned to the Belmont Grandstand to be honored the message was clear no words needed ......"See folks I'm just a racehorse playing in a game I can win, but you folks, the silent majority as your ill fated leader calls you are playing in a game you can't win and it is time for you all to wise up".

Am I the only one who thinks all breeding stallions would benefit from being ridden 3 or 4 days a week to keep them muscled up and not bored ? It would give them something to look forward to. I’m sure any of Secretariat’s exercise riders would have been honored with the “task” or getting him out. I know they were concerned about possible injuries out on the exercise track but truthfully, they can get injured in the paddocks too. Plus it may have kept his weight down and kept him from getting laminitis. Just a thought.

If you look at the foal photo his great physical came from his mom! It took Chenery from 1934 until1970 to breed the mare who produced the masterpiece of Secretariat. My dad as a boy lived in Richmond VA and walked barefoot from his Grandmothers house through the woods to watch the horses train on the racetrack Chris Chenery built during the Depression. It’s one sided thinking to think only the Sire line is important when the dam is what made this great horse. A lesson to breeders everywhere!
