Resonator comparison - Fender, Regal & Michael Messer

- A shootout between 3 resonator guitars:
- Regal RC2
- Fender FR50
- Michael Messer Blues
There are 2 examples of slide guitar playing using the 3 guitars - one example used a pick while the other just uses fingers. The first example is a 12 bar blues in open D in the style of my band's song 'Credit Card Blues; the second example is my song 'When I cry'. At the end of the video there is a short excerpt of Credit Card Blues from my band NORTHBOUND and the recording is taken from out debut album "Wish I was Home". The Regal was the guitar I used for this recording.
Please leave some comments to tell me what you think of the guitars.

Very useful and well played. Messer for me - it seems to have the biggest spectrum of highs and lows. Awesome.
Thanks for the kind comment
The Michael Messer by a country mile. It’s got a killer tone!
My impressions of the dominant characteristics:
- Fender bright and honky
- Regal slightly muddy compared to the others (maybe the brass body effect, since it sounds a bit like MM Lightening model)
- MM Blues the goldilocks option that sounds like genuine blues of the pre-war era.
Btw, the MM Fiddle Edge is another fabulous step up but priced accordingly since only a few were made.
Thanks for an excellent comparison. And for the frank comments about the original Regal setup.
Michael Messer one gets my vote. Saw him play about ten years ago at Southport Arts Centre.
Wow, I bet that was good
Excellent review. Fair and to the point!
Thanks Iain!

They all sounded great but Michael Messer hands down!
Thanks!
I thought the Regal had a very consistent even tone ...Great sounding Guitar !
Cheers James!
Very interesting! Thank you.
My pleasure!
It's the Regal RC-2 for me.
Fender and Messer both sound great in very different ways.
Definitely!
Love the Messer
Yes, me too!
I've got a Michael Messer Blues, got it when they first came out in fact I had to wait a little while for my one because Acoustic Guitar magazine were using it to test it - the write-up is on my guitar! Couldn't have been more helpful if they tried at the firm - they offered me a discount simply because it was being used and they asked me how I'd like it set up and done it for free. Absolutely stunning guitar all I did to it was replace the tuners with Waverly's - nothing wrong with the tuners that come with it , I just like Waverly tuners. It responds that well that when my dog barks the low 'D' string resonates! :)
Hi Andy, then I probably read the write up on your guitar which influenced me buying mine!
@@MarcGuitarVideos you can't lose with them can you? :)
@@andyseed2487 Excellent guitar and good price
@@MarcGuitarVideos Michael Messer uses one live and hasn't had anything done to his - I've also got a cheapish res' that I put a National cone, biscuit and bridge and a National pickup on, Sounds good through the pickup but not a patch on the MM acoustically.
@@MarcGuitarVideos Hi , just in case you ever wanted a pickup for your Michael messer I have just found out they supply two different pickups now made by Sixtus but branded with the MM diamond logo :)
Regal 100%
I have a Regal RC2. This demo accurately depicts the sharp metal sound and ringing reverb. It is also pretty heavy. My introduction to resonator guitars was from a friend. He let me borrow a 30s era National Dulian to practice for a recording session. It was a mess in almost every way but sounded absolutely heavenly. I offered to buy it when it was time to return it but the owner would not, I had to have one of my own. Could not afford a new National so I looked around at mid budget resonators and bought the Regal for less than $600. Mine out of the box sounded very good. Strings have a profound effect and it took some searching to find the best to my ears. Now a couple years out, the finish is showing some spotting and I need to adjust the neck a bit but I play it often, mostly with slide and tuned to DAGGAD. For the money it sounds good to me.
DADGAD sorry.
Steven - thanks for a great comment adding more info
You say the strings had a profound effect. What strings did you end up choosing, and what are the gauges?
MM Blues has that reverb sound. The 013 brings that out. With the others, i don't hear it.
Helpfull!!
excellent, glad it was helpful
I have the MM Blues guitar with a 013 set of strings, set up for ragtime, blues fingerstyle and slide. But i can't dig in for slide, need to go up another gauge, but not loose the playability on fingerstyle. A set of 014 may work, but i will probably loose the action i have for the fingerstyle action. Anyone had this problem?
All three sound quite muddy, but perhaps that’s how it’s miked/captured. The Messer sounded the clearest to my ears though.
Really nice, Marc. I ‘think’ I prefer the smokier tone of the wood bodied Fender, but you made them all sound good. Slide is a little further down the road for me. T
Thanks! I have to admit that I was surprised just how good the Fender foundered when it was recorded
Great presentation. Nice playing. I’m really curious about the volume differences. Because the parts were mixed so seamlessly, it wasn’t clear from the video if the metal bodies were louder than the wood-bodied Fender. The tone was a little softer and warmer on the Fender, which I liked. But I’m looking for big volume bc I have to play acoustically with horns. I realize this video is 4 years old and I may not get a reply, but anyone please chime in. Thanks!
I really didn't like the Fender very much---sounds like it has a spider bridge. It's a toss up between the Regal and the Messer both of which sound like they have biscuit bridges which I much prefer.
The MM blues beats most resos under 1k.
Thanks for the demo. I really want to get into slide guitar and the Michael Messer Blues seems like my favorite. I have considered a cheap RD40 Regal Dobro. I'm not fond of the square necks though. The Nationals are some of my favorites but the price is ridiculous. In any event, I will look into the Michael Messer Blues a little deeper. Anybody have any more info on this guitar, please post it. Thanks!
Thanks Chuck! I agree, National are nice but the price compared to the rest is just insane. I'm please you liked my my little comparison
Hi. This was great thanks. Are you sure the messer blues is brass? On his site it’s listed as steel bodied. Thanks
Regal has the best sound...
Thanks for the comment
I've been considering an Icarus Tri-Cone. Do you have any experience with Icarus?
No sorry, never heard of them. Let me know if you try one
@@MarcGuitarVideos Hi, they seem to be like Michael Messer. They import, Quality check and set up, brand them under their own banner. I'm wanting a Tri-cone and, sadly, Michael Messer doesn't do one.
You should have used Fender FR48 instead of FR50 ; the Fender FR48..
Blow them all away !
Is it that good sounding
Hey just a heads up but those Michael Messer Blues resos are steel, not brass. However the Michael Messer Lightning reso is brass :-) I’ve the 12 fret version of the one you play in this vid. They’re a bit good aren’t they!?!!
I had no idea. I'm sure the advert said it was brass... oh well, never mind. They are really good and I'm very happy with mine
Lewis Ford I have a Messer Lightning.. Compared many, settled on the MM. great guitar. Theres a vid on my channel.
Funny about that, I like the Fender sound. Is it reasonably well made? Sound is so subjective eh!
I really like the sound of the fender. The wooden body gives it a very different sound, but one I really like. The build quality is pretty poor to be honest, but it is dirt cheap compared to other resonators on the market. Mine is one of the very first ones, from 1999 or maybe 2000 I think. They may be built better now.
Messer, fender, regal.
I’ll take the Fender All Day Long...
Made in China guitars will do that to you
