Great job. Keep going. I've been "playing " at gardening for years but started getting serious about it the last 2 years. This year my goal is to be intentional in both my gardening, canning and grocery buying. Investing my time in all of these is worth it for my family. Few days ago I had the talk with my family that it's time for them to step up too. Lol.
Hi there, I just found your channel whilst doing one of my favourite things, watching pantry tours.🤣 Great video, I have been pressure canning since April of last year and I love it. Due to the energy crisis here in Wales in the UK I have not done much canning for the last couple of months but I hope to do some soon as looking for deals on meat and some veg. Some of my fav things I canned last year were a leek, bean and turkey soup; it was fantstic to put in a pan and thicken into soup then I did ugly chicken and chicken pot pie filling. Yes, pressure canned potatoes are so easy and I love having them on my pantry shelves. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Energy is a definite concern everywhere right now, but your part of the world is being hit especially hard! We’re *hopefully* finishing up a solar install this week, to assist us in staying ahead of it, but nothing is guaranteed for sure. I canned *ugly* (gorgeous 😆) brisket on Sunday, and will have a video on it this week. I just LOVE having meat on the shelves. I also love a good pantry tour! I’m so glad you’re here!
So many greet tips. In 2004 we lived in Florida and had four hurricanes in one summer. We had a 12 day stretch with no power. It was 95+degrees and 90% humidity. I never felt so inadequately prepared to take care of my family. I vowed then and there never again ! I had been a homesteader but did not have any long term storage or emergency supplies. Everyone should be ready to get by for at least a week or two and build from there. You really never know what might come your way.
Thank you for your video. Great advice, .... You're miles ahead of the herd, ... and still, I'd advise stocking up on some staples that are still available today and may not be tomorrow. Things like Rice and Beans are getting expensive as well as scarce yet they store well given the right conditions. I pack my spices away in mason jars with an Oxygen Absorber for that extra long shelf life. As a canner, I've collected Mason Jars for years and have stocked up on new lids as well. Chickens are great, as long as you can keep them alive that is. This is the first season that I haven't been wiped out by foxes, raccoons, and hawks. My birds are in full time lock down now and they prefer to free range. I prefer them free ranging in the summer too because they eat way less bought food. Good luck.
Thank you for the advice. We have some rice and beans put away also, but somehow I think there’s always room for more! Wheat berries are on my list too. I ordered a grain mill yesterday.
The slower the better on spending, although I’ve been known to dive in. The easier it is for everyone, the more likely they are to move toward sustainability. So glad you’re here! Thanks for watching!
Freedom Rangers are great meat birds and are hardy, good foragers, grow quickly without risks like Cornish cross, and their chest meat is huge. Leghorns are hardy egg layers and are good foragers as well.
Thank you!!! I actually ordered a brown layer sampler pack of 15 just the other day, because I couldn’t commit! They’re all supposed to be great layers, so I figured this would be a great way for us to see what we like. Time will tell! 🤣
I love this. I have always tried to keep a decent pantry stock to have ingredients to throw together a few meals. This year I decided to up my game of pantry and freezer ingredients and I love knowing we have plenty to see us through.
Hi. New subscriber. Really enjoying your videos. You deserve more subscribers 😊 Keep up the good work. It’s really hard to get canning jars at a good price over here in the UK. Canning isn’t the done thing here.
Thank you for your kind words! I was growing pretty well and took a several month break last year to help run our youth sports baseball season. As a result, my growth basically stopped. This summer I amped it back up and I have almost doubled THIS MONTH!! I am so grateful to have been invited into Canuary, and to be able to participate in the Pantry Challenge. It’s been a great exercise in consistency and editing practice. Thanks again for watching!
Thanks for replying. It’s 3.30 am here and as I’m having trouble sleeping I’m still watching your channel. Just going through your sourdough playlist. I have a sourdough starter in my fridge. It’s been there since last summer! You have inspired me to resurrect it. I haven’t got to your Canuary playlist yet but looking forward to it.
Definitely a good reminder! I will say that I don’t live and die by dates on canned goods, but if I can get one with a longer life, I would definitely go for it. I know many people who open the can and smell/ look at the item to see if it’s still good. I’d definitely ignore a date before I’d go hungry. Thanks for watching!
WE HAVE HAD CHCKENS FOR YEARS AND LOVE ROAD iSLAND Reds (oops caps) they can be used for meat chickens too but our hens are like pets, so we don't eat them.
I'm following you on your journey. I'm sure it will take us places. Shopping for a new pressure canner now. Still learning about features, pros and cons of different ones, but about to take the leap. Can't wait to taste the end result. Good luck.
I looked at several canners. The Presto was easy to use and less intimidating than the All-American, but I went to the All-American so I never have to replace any gaskets and could double stack my quart jars. You won’t regret it! The food is just way better when you grow/can it yourself. 💕

@@thehometownhomestead So you bought at least a 30 Qt canner. I saw it in your video. That's big. Is there any "learning curve" or things to be aware of using such beast? Any difference between canning 1 or 2 layers? It definitely is a commitment to make such a purchase.
@@tracyfunk3928 the only thing you have to do it get used to putting the lid on exactly level. I also have a video on it. Mine is the All American 930. I was able to find a deal on it, thankfully! That said, any canned will work. I actually saw one in the box new of another brand on FB marketplace for less than $50 this week. Keep your eyes out for deals, because they’re out there!

You’re exactly right! I’m brainstorming on this topic right now. More people need to join us in this pursuit.

I would love your tip on the pad Thai noodles!

Great video! You have an impressive stocked pantry from your first year gardening. I admire your ambition!!
Thank you! Lots of work, but it’s been fun!
Thank you for sharing your experience this is very inspiring.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great advice….especially about jars and investing at each shopping trip instead of getting caught needing a lot of preservation equipment all at once.

Get that dough out and bring it back to life!
TiP: if you plan to bulk up on canned goods purchased from stores, be sure to check the expiration dates on the cans before you buy.

road island red chickens 👍
I ended up ordering a mix of brown egg layers, and this one is definitely in the mix!
