  • Speed mod on the 1986 Philips PMC100 did wonders! I could play with this FM groovebox for days now just slowing down the tape. Just adding a simple PWM DC motor speed controller that you can get for like $10. Simply wonderful!

    This episode: Simon discovers that it doesn't really matter what words (or synth) you use, because everything sounds dope when you record it to wobbly slowed down tape.
    "Nothing like a little finger on the flange."

    I'm inclined to modify a regular cassette recorder this way... And not wait until I can find a keyboard/cassette combo.

    • @Polyinstrumentalism
      @Polyinstrumentalism 2 года назад +4

      I did it with an identical PWM board on an old portastudio mf-p01 with good results, although I need to install a switch to go between the original PWM board and the new one since the syncing of the record/play of the 4 tracks is calibrated for the stock PWM board. Without it, it's impossible to record something and have it play back at the same pitch, which is not ideal for multitracking.

    On any mechanical motor a pwm will always work. It’s basically turning the power on & off to maintain the speed you’re aiming for. Where using a potentiometer to change the amount of power getting to the motor to slow it down will eventually reach a point it won’t power the motor any more.

    Ever since I got into analog gear it also got me into opening them up and repairing things on my own. So this type of stuff really interests me. What do you suggest for someone just starting out with stuff like this? Like what’s a good entry level thing for modifying gear?

    • @numbstation
      @numbstation 2 года назад +3

      For getting better at actual repair: find stuff with noisy pots, bad output jacks, or dodgy power supply caps, and replace those components. Good way to get vintage stuff cheap, practice soldering, tracing problems, and otherwise learning how to do the thing right.
      As far as stuff that has simple mods that sound good, a couple I like:
      - Hing Hon EK-001 keyboards use a simple 555 oscillator to generate a square wave. You can find them in various forms at dollar stores and thrift shops for under $10 (do *not* pay stupid eBay prices. These are not collectible. They are worth $10). Tons of mods & ideas documented online.
      - Danelectro FAB effects pedals. The Echo pedal in particular has several easy mods, can be re-housed with little trouble, and genuinely sounds good. Their original retail price was stupid cheap - like $20 - and they're still a steal.
      - Adding PWM control to things using prefab boards (see also: this video).
      - Replacing clock crystals on sound toys with VCOs (once again, using prefab boards... thank you China).
      - Read Nicholas Collins' "Hardware hacking". One of the classic intro-level books on the subject; easy projects, great "for dummies" style tutorials.

    "red is positive and black is negative". Says simple Simon... the Magpie. LOL Um... you'd think so, but I perform IT related services and even repair computers and electronics, and you have no idea how many times I saw these wires reversed on "Made in China" electronics. Gosh, even a couple of times - laptops. Worse yet, more expensive electronics may have reverse polarity protection built in, but I have seen red and black used as data send/receive cables and blue and green as power cables... So yeah... needless to say: ALWAYS VOLTAGE TEST FIRST. (Also - I wouldn't recommend going "really fast" on old tape decks, it could be recipe #1 for getting the tape chewed up or torn, should the auto stop function be compromised or simply not fire quickly enough).
