- Hello everyone. Today, I'm in Birmingham and I'm reviewing the highly rated Soho Tavern near Hockley which is a Desi Pub, also known as an Indian Gastropub. I've had a few recommendations to try this place and I decided to head down there and give it a go!

Gary, Having grown up in Vermont (US) in the 1960s & 70s, my exposure to ethnic food was nonexistent. We ate mildly seasoned, hearty, stick-to-your-ribs New England fare. Your channel has opened up my eyes to cuisines that I would never otherwise be exposed to. I am hoping that life circumstances will allow me to do some traveling to your lovely country before I am too old to do so.😊 Your geography, your history, your food . . . cannot wait! Giving out takeaway dishes not only is a brilliant idea but screams confidence in their food. Love that, always feel a bit cheeky asking to take away food i cant finish.

Sweet and Sour? That's a dish from Hong Kong to serve to westerners.
Try a proper Chinese restaurant, it's a different world from the blend rubbish that the local 'Chinese' takeaway serves.

Another cracking review Gary. I'm not vegetarian, but sometimes I don't fancy a meat heavy dish and I love that Indian cuisine has such wonderfully tasty veggie dishes. That Bhindi Masala looked delicious and if I did not have dinner on the go right now, I'd be ordering from our local Indian. Cheers m'dears!

Hi Gary, loved the review. I work nearby to the soho tavern and go there a lot!! Never had a bad meal there ever. You must try the New Soho Tavern in Hampton in Arden it is even better!! Worth checking out I would highly recommend. Ps the chilli chips are to die for👏👏👏

@@GaryEats hi Gary, it is a upmarket branch of the soho tavern with a lot of outdoor space set on three levels including roof top dining. Superb venue👍
Astonishing portions. My mouth was salivating! The tandoori grilled meats and king prawns looked delicious. The vegetable dish looked really great as well. Next time, if I may suggest, I would order alloo paratha (spiced potatoes stuffed paratha) for a change. You will love it. Thank you again for eating on our behalf. Much appreciated.

That was a great review Gary. The quality and quantity was just outstanding; pity about the lamb chops but otherwise superb. The okra, chicken and King prawns were definitely the stand-out. That was one of the best meals have seen in ages mate. I will give it a score of 10/10 because they had *OKRA* on the menu, and OKRA is my most *FAVOURITE VEGETABLE, NO IF'S NO BUT"S.* I loved the way they cooked it as well. I would have overlooked the fact that the lamb chops were a tad overdone, as the portion size was *OUTSTANDING,* and for once, my Sporran did not object. Whilst watching you devour that meal, I was getting stuck into my *FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST WITH LASHINGS OF MUSHROOMS, COOKED IN GARLIC BUTTER, "BILLY THE BUTCHER" SAUSAGES, BLACK PUDDING HEINZ ENGLISH BAKED BEANS (The only Baked Beans worthy of my stomach) and BUBBLE & SQUEAK!* NO LUNCH FOR ME! Cheers my friend, and Lord Hasselblad.

That looked amazing and, to be fair, lamb chops seem to be somethings that most restaurants struggle to serve tender, especially if they're part of a mixed grill. I know you're venturing beyond London more now but the Lahore Kebab House in Aldgate does fantastic lamb chops. Might be worth a try next time you're in the area. Great review as always.
Lamb chops at Indian restaurants usually suck. Flavour is there but usually not cooked right

My mum was shipped off to Australia from Middlemore Orphanage in Birmingham in the 1920s, courtesy of the Government. 13years old and on her own, she made a life for herself. She never went home. I think I’d like to go back and visit one day. Gary makes it easier when he does his reviews. It looks like I’d enjoy it. Thanks Gary.

Oh those prawns looked AMAZING! (King Prawn Saag is a favourite of mine!.. and a naan ….with a beer please!!!) … and for the amount you got on your plate the price was extremely reasonable! To be honest, I am an 'older' woman and would have happily used the takeaway bags and made that last for at least three meals!!! Great review as ever!

I live around the corner from the Soho tavern can I go there quite often you can't go wrong the food is incredible the staff are wonderful and the atmosphere is lovely

Oooh we love the Black country’s desi grills - try the Desi Yew Tree in Wolverhampton - it’s amazing.
Yours looked fab - I’d have been forcing those onions down and those grilled meats - wow. We’ve never had ocra but will lookout for that - infact I’ve put the soho tavern on my ever growing list 👍

Hello Mr Gary, hope you are well. Everything was perfect apart from one major experience you missed! You need to get a piece of the nan bread and put some of the onions on it, and then drop in a nice big piece of chicken tikka and then pour the mint sauce on top of the chicken, roll it up and then say LET'S GIVE IT A GO!!! It's a familiar joint for me, been many times and the food is always excellent. Have to say you missed one of the stars of this establishment, the chilli chips, they are amazing, they are coated in a chilli batter and fried, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, then covered in a sticky chilli, they are so so good, it's worth going just for the chips!

There are numerous wonderful places to try in Birmingham & the surrounding area! Ie the Vine, The Covered Wagon, The Merry Maid, Old Moseley Arms (Tindall St), The Hen & Chickens! It goes on and on

Hi I saw your question and answer video. About where to go in the country and beyond. Iv just come back from Dublin with my ex and her 2 kids. Went to the Guinness factory. All very interesting but really not sure about the food! They have 2 2 Michelin restaurants. So it can not be all that bad. Sorry for posting on this but as I say would not let me on the Guinness drinking video.😂

Excellent review as usual Gary.The food was presented well and plenty of it.Judging by your demolition of the meal you enjoyed it immensely and your mark seemed accurate.The lamb being overcooked slightly was unfortunate and the prawn size was not what i would describe as king prawns but still ok.That was a good Indian meal

That really looked good. It reminded me of what we had for our Christmas dinner - a reheated (advice given by the chef so we did it 'right') Indian takeaway banquet. There was enough for two days! Really enjoy your no nonsense approach - it makes the review more authentic!

@@GaryEats It's a long way to come for lunch! hahaha! We decided that Christmas 2024 we will be having a Thai takeaway - bought the day before, chilled and reheated to their specifications! Why waste money on food that you get tired of having to eat, because you got way too much to start with!

Hi @Gary, if you haven't already, I would try the Royal Oak in Soho Road, Birmingham. In my opinion it's far superior to the Soho Tavern! ST is great too but the food is a level above at RO.

Table 1 indeed, made me laugh out loud. Place looked sublime. Oh those gorgeous prawns, everything looked fab, apart from the overdone chop. Love the "doggy bags" similar to the US as you know. Republic please, and you can bring the good weather with you😂 Great show again, you keep surpassing yourself.

What a great find that is Gary, and I’m with you on the onions at the bottom of the pile, always one of the tastiest bits!
All of the juices give it an amazing flavour.
Why didn’t you ask them to exchange the naan for a garlic naan ? Usually realise how good the service is if you raise the issue and do they sort it out immediately

I always worry about the "sizzle" plates - they're super-heated, and some times even if the food on them is perfectly cooked when it goes on the platter, it can get overdone just in transit from the heat on the serving dish. The onions etc help, but ... I do find that items closer to the platter or eaten later in the meal can be more done than i really want. I mean, it's an exciting presentation, but ...

The plates aren't hot enough to overcook the food. The 'sizzling' comes from adding lemon juice

The Parsons Pig in Crawley, West Sussex, is really good for indian food. Their tandoori mixed grill is well known across the county.

Please come to the north east there are so many places to try out. Ocean road in South Shields has a full street of amazing authentic curry houses with amazing prices - I recommend Radhuni and Dehli 6. South Shields also has award winning fish and chips at Colman's and Friez and Burgz for an amazing cheap smash burger with garlic sauce (we love that in the north east).
Best fish and chips I've had though is Bills in North Shields.
Also in Manchester Fat Pats sell amazing sandwiches - Philly Cheese Steak is my favourite. Would love to see if you think it's worth the price!

Hi gary . If a gaff like this gives you decent portions , they will always have the same patrons coming back time and time again . Well worth the money , portions look superb ! Its just a shame there isnt many places like this in dartford kent . At this rate i can see startrek the original series has serious viewing competition.

All of that food looked delicious to me, even the lamb chops. I'm not a pink lamb lover. All meat especially steaks need to be cooked bare minimum medium. None of that rare nonsense.
Out of my budget as I'm poor nowadays but I would say that meal was good value. I would be happy to pay those prices.

Hi Gary, looks great many thanks. Next time you need to come and 'give it a go' at the Swinley Pub, South Ascot. Might sound expensive but its not - it's an old, locals pub that used to have a dodgy reputation but has been serving wonderful, very reasonable Nepalese food (basically Indian) for a few years and the place has really turned around and is very popular now. Its our favourite place locally and it does take outs too, perfect. You won't be disappointed I assure you.

Hi Gary. Had a massive steak & kidney pie and a crumble at lunch; this post has made me hungry again - I must have worms! You made me laugh at 8.06 'Just look how it falls apart - oh, that's a bit tough' 😂. You used the naan as a spoon for the okra dish - the hallmark of a true curry connoisseur!
Surprised you didn't choose India as a potential destination; a lot of planning, expense, and research would be involved I guess.

Go to The Vine, Roebuck St, West Bromwich. They do also goat curry which is superb and the open barbecue section which is set at the back and has a totally different character is unequalled in my view 👍

@@GaryEats thanks Gary. I believe it is the 'original' and has been going for decades. It's an institution. Its proximity to The Hawthornes means its known and adored by thousands of football fans. This gives a clue as to why it feels it has two characters. I remember when the rear grill area was a stack of white melamine tables and garden chairs under tarpaulins but always large enough for hungry fans. You'll see the grill kitchen because it is front of house. The expelair system is so large the grill masters stand under it. It's a tour de force.
The lamb wouldn't have bothered me in the dish you ordered because there was so much more to admire, but imagine you ordered a lamb curry. Your review would have been less complimentary, that said if I am in that area I will be popping in and ordering the same as you. There's another Indian pub just a few miles from this place in West Bromwich that I would recommend all day long......well I haven't been there since I moved to the Isle of Wight back in 2000. It's called The Vine, we used to know it as Suki's, and myself and a few mates used to drive from Staffordshire every Thursday (pay day) for a nice bit of Indian scran. I remember the food being very good whatever I ordered. Like I said, I've not been for 25 years but it's still open, which speaks volumes in the curry capital of England 😆
If you're near junction 1 of the M5 you should try it mate 👍
