  • I'm finally in Manchester! After many recommendations, I'm reviewing Mr Thomas' Chophouse which was established in 1867 would you believe? It has a deep history and I'm hoping that it lives up to with the food. Let's give it a go!
I would appreciate it if you could like and subscribe to the channel.

A couple of points. The watercress looks like rocket and you even said it was peppery so I'm totally confused 🤔. When I saw triple cooked chips I immediately rolled my eyes and thought "here we go". I normally try and avoid poncy chips in flower pots and I know exactly what you mean by dry, you just can't beat proper homemade chips piled high on the plate. There really is no need to over-engineer simple chips.

Hi Gary, this was an interesting review. I like the look of the pub, and that lamb certainly looked tasty. However, something just doesn't add up correctly. That was a stingy portion of dry chips, and yes, I think they could have offered a little mint sauce on the side. Basically, you had a tasty, albeit small, lamb chop and some nice gravy ... I think the price is too high. Your score is slightly generous, but fair enough. .... Good work, Gary ... This was actually thought provoking in terms of quality versus value for money.

Hi Gary, I think you were being generous with your score. Here are my thoughts:
The meat serving was small (even though it looked very tasty!),
the amount of rocket (you referred to as watercress) was plentiful, but looked undressed,
the gravy looked delicious but a smaller complimentary pot would have been better considering the price; and
those were not triple-cooked chips, they were wholesalers precut chips Triple-cooked chips have a very distinct look ; firstly they have to be cut from a real potato (not wholesalers type) and they're fried three times at different temperatures. Their appearance is always dark with a very crunchy outside and a super white fluffy middle. It's labour- intensive but that is factored into their price. You received cheap wholesalers caterer's chips.
That place is bog standard and extremely overpriced. I think that meal was worth no more than £20. If it were priced at £20 and advertised/described honestly 7/10. For the price you paid and their dishonesty the score is closer to 3/10 .

You've hit the nail on the head, OPC. Of course, that was rocket, and the chips brought in from the 'boil in the bag' industry/catering services: pre cooked to reheat. The "restaurant" next door operates this, but the tourists are unaware. I see the supplier delivering around the back. No way through the front door, José!

I like a Barnsley chop but I'm a peasant and like it well done 😶 £25 is a bit pricey. Chips in a pot and not many of them. Extra for gravy ??? Madness. I like a bit of mint sauce with my lamb.
Rocket and watercress is a food that my food eats.
Too expensive to get bad chips 🍟. 13% service charge is not right. It should always be discretionary.
7 is fair, reduced to 6 for the service charge. Excellent review again Gary.

Great review Gary, thank you. As you say a chop house with only one chop is poor ( no pork chops ?) and no mint sauce is unforgivable ! Your watercress was rocket ! I would have complained about that as I love watercress but hate the taste of rocket. The chop was nicely cooked - Barnsley chop a good northern dish ! The meal looked OK but I thought it was very expensive. Your 7 score was spot on 👍

Were you informed about the service charged ahead of ordering?? Because I'm poor, everything sounds too expensive. For the cost I'd expect more chips, or a medium or large option on the menu, both priced equally, so if you only want a handful of chips, at least theres the option to stop food wastage, but to be frugel with potatoes, a reasonably cheap ingredient is just mean.

Ah wow Gary, a Barnsley Chop at Thomas Chophouse. Manchester is so rich in historical delights. I've eaten there. I was introduced to Sam's chophouse by my very old friend John Gibson who was CEO of Cornhill Insurance at the time and frequented it daily. In fact, I've just called a lady friend of the 80s with whom we enjoyed afternoons devoted to eating and exploring wine. She sends her regards. The chophouses were such a feature of Manchester. I believe they are still in existence although the prices will have changed. Maybe you've given me an incentive to revisit old lunchtime venues.

Another lovely review, Gary. The pub looked beautiful, but..£27 for a bit of lamb and a few mediocre chips and then they have the audacity to add 13% service charge??! You’re too bloody nice, Gary! That would have been a 7/10 if it was £20 with a drink thrown in. For what you paid, I’d rate it a 5/10. But that’s just me being a tight git. Cheers, mate!

I visited Mr Thomas's Chop House fifteen or so years ago. At that time they had steak and kidney pudding on the menu. One of the finest things I've eaten. But, sadly, it's no longer served. I see they now do a steak and ale pie. But, in my book, a steak pie can't compare with a steak pudding!
Very disappointing that that the triple cooked chips were dry and lacked crunch. If triple cooked chips are on the menu, expectations are raised and they need to be right.

*A fair and thorough review of this Chophouse 🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻*
I noticed earlier in the video, knew what I was noticing and you particularly stipulated it in your summing up- the sauce ! Noticed how well it covered everything and I thought- wow, that is great indication of a good sauce. The final score is a respectable one because you look at it collectively- service, presentation, taste, quality, the cooking and the all important final bill.
Indeed, there are some things in the food world that are and have to be together. Lamb and mint is one but that’s my opinion. A local restaurant serves amazing Barnsley lamb chops. It’s an old unmodernised place but the food is good. Have not been there for a few years but the chef gives two of those chops, homemade potatoes of choice, peas, mushrooms and a side salad for roughly 17/18 pounds. With a mint, rosemary and red wine cream sauce and I’ve never had anything so good. Loved this Gary…brilliant

Triple cooked chip just means boiled, fried to soften and then fried a final time to crisp up. It works a treat when done right and is really more commonplace than people realise. Nice meal , looked great , the problem you have is restaurants now regardless charge for everything .. they nickel and dime the customer and I do find this frustrating. I believe certain basic condiment items like gravy can be absorbed with the cost of the meal. 30 quid with no drink I think is expensive. I live in Canada so that’s approx $50 bucks .. I can have a good meal for 30 bucks and a couple beer for a total of 50 bucks. The food served you looked great and the venue looked smart. I think the meal you had was 15 to 20 quid tops to be honest and with a drink should of been just under 30 quid. Good video as always interesting to see how food businesses are passing all the costs now onto the customer to make money. Looking forward to the next video .. cheers 🥂

That you for watching and commenting David, blimey your a harsh reviewer, you didn’t make a deduction for service charge. The lamb was quality and the ambiance of the pub amazing which in fairness you don’t get everywhere, maybe we agree on a 6.5 ?. Enjoy the rest of the weekend 👍

Maybe I’m being grumpy but I don’t see this place ever reaching the standard of Blacklock which they should aspire to. They need to be aware of customer expectations and they clearly aren’t.

The chop and the gravy looked really nice, but with poor chips and nothing much else I would have thought £20 ish would have been fairer, nice review Gary!

At £20.00 with the ambiance of the pub I would have given it a 9/10 Nick. Thanks for watching 👍

I just like to point out Gary .Chips had black bits in them & I definitely wouldn’t of eaten most them.Lamb on the bone was shocking price to pay & No mince sauce ☹️.Gravy looked absolutely spot on . Still great experience to ever watch where you take us .Thanks for a wonderful vlogg 👍🏻

Didn’t notice that regarding the chips … it was a little expensive but the gravy was as unbelievable as the lamb, thanks for watching and commenting really appreciated 👌

The insert at ~2:40 restating the prices was redundant, as you clearly mentioned them around the 2:00 mark. Also, the reason you "watercress" was peppery was because they served you arugula (rocket) without telling you. Just had to chime in. I do love the series and am a subscriber.

A very fair review Gary. The Barnsley chop and red wine gravy looked delicious, pity the chips weren’t up to top quality. The bill seemed a little pricey. Otherwise, many thanks for sharing with us. Glad you managed to get up to Manchester. See you soon 👍👍👍

Yup, mint sauce for me too! Lots of gravy on the plate and mash the chips to absorbe as much as possible! Also, I would nibble the last bit of meat off that bone! At the price, a bit of veg would have been nice though.

Good stuff Gaz. I absolutely adore a Barnsley chop but them chips were an after thought slightly over priced maybe but the surroundings were very much worth it in my opinion. Keep up the brilliant content pal 👍🏼

Great review. Will give that place I try as I love lamb. Drenching those tcc’s in gravy woulda helped. But the chop looked amazing.
