Hi Gary. Great video again. I live about 10 minutes from the pie factory. It used to be owned by an eccentric Irish man called Collum O'Rouke. He built up a chain of pubs all over the west midlands and surrounding areas. His first pub was the little pack horse in Bewdley. All the pubs were very quirky and themed. There was the sausage factory, upton muggery, the dry Dock (with a real narrow boat for a bar), the henhouse and many others. The first opened in the late 80's and he sold the chain about 15 to 20 years ago to a pub chain who ruined business. The pie factory is the only one to have survived in its original form. The pub was originally called the Dowty Arms. There used to be boxing matches held upstairs and a claim to fame is that Frank Skinner performed there before he was famous. In the old days, the Dan Pie was much larger. You had whole potatoes, whole carrots, and a mountain of meat. I once had at the pack horse a huge dan pie followed by a large steamed treacle pudding with lashings of hot custard. The pudding was big enough for a family! It was a real belly buster of a meal. I'm really glad you liked your experience, keep up the good work!

I've been to The Pie Factory a few times as I'm from the Black Country, and I've never had a bad meal from there. You should try the Mix Grill. It comes out on a shovel 😂. I think what you tried was very basic from The Pie Factory. The lamb and mint pie is exceptional and the Andy Murray curry Pie is to die for. They do their own ales (called Sledgehammer) as well. It's a brilliant place to eat. Also, there's a challenge pie called the Desperate Dan cow pie. That brings me on to battered chips. Battered chips are a staple in the Black Country. You'll find them more often than not at most chip shops. They are 100% better than regular chips, in my opinion. I'm glad you liked your visit and keep uo the good work 😊👍🏻.
Strewth, what a terrific Beef Pot Pie. Melt-in-the-mouth meat, marvellous gravy and a crispy puff pastry hat. Battered chips elevate that side to a new level. Agree that a runny egg yolk would have completed the ‘kibbeh balls’ styled black pudding. Another great review Gazza.
No Gary, that's not a pie without the filling being encased. The only exception I can think of is shepherd's pie. Just my opinion of course.🙂 Keep up the great reviews.
That’s a pot pie not a pie. Both can be delicious, but a true pie takes more skill to bake as getting the crust on the bottom and the top takes a degree of skill not necessary for a pot pie.

That "pie" looked fantastic!!! The melt in the mouth beef looked delicious & the pastry topping was superb. I agree that the chips are probably not the healthiest, but they sure looked good!! I agree about your comment on the starter. The egg would have been better had it been more runny & would have helped with the dryness of the black pudding cake, though I think I'd still have managed to eat it. At least there were no mushrooms anywhere to be seen 🤣

Hello Gary, greetings from the Dallas Metroplex. I subcribed to the channel between Christmas and New Years and could not be happier. The content is top rate. Looking forward to catching up on all of the videos that are available and those to come.
Great review, Gary 👍🏼 I was gutted when you cut the egg and it wasn't runny, I felt like I was sitting there for a moment 😄 I was expecting a full pastry pie, not just a pastry lid, but it did look tasty!
Was a favourite place when I worked in Tipton.. a pie though is fully enclosed, you had more of a pot pie, hot pot cross over.. no harm done there though.. love black pudding, don't like eggs so no comment on how it was cooked. Retired many years now, so a visit for old times sake is well overdue.. Great review Gary
The pie filling looked really tasty, although I think the gravy may have been a little thin to have been fully encased in a pastry crust. Battered chips huh, I hope they come with a side order of a defibrilator!!
Hi Gary, before you even asked about the pie, I said that is NOT a pie, It is a cheat pie 😂, think I like the idea of the black pudding cake, I love black pudding 😋 thank you for another great review ❤😊
Thanks for the review Gary and Mr C. Would have liked that pie dish with mash and cabbage as looked like stew with puff pastry topping. I prefer a proper encased pie personally but not a bad effort
Nice one Gary. Four of us visited Mad O'Rourke's a couple of months ago and it was rammed, I had to park on the street, as the large car park was full, so it is very popular. We only had pies and chips and agreed we would all return. I had the steak and kidney pudding, which was superb: my wife had the veggie pie, son had a steak pie and his girlfriend the lamb pie. We could not fault any of them and, as you stated, the battered chips are a bit good.
I definitely feel disenfranchised when I'm presented with a pie with just a hat on. A pie isn't a pie without the meat being fully surrounded by a delicious pastry.
you could not surround the meat with pastry as the amount of gravy would just make it soggy. there was only meat in the pie. no onions or anything else.
Great review as Always! Really like your channel and hope you will get millions of subs , keep being such an honest humble and a good lad as you seems to be, we need more people like you in RUclips.
I've been there and I totally agree. Personally I think it's overrated although you can obviously do a lot worse. I've found the best pies to be Lancashire/North East, especially from a standard bakery.
I ay lived there since 1989 but in the mid-late 80s my dad used to drive from Wolvo to a chippy in Bilston which was renowned for orange chips, I think they were battered. Do you know if it's still there?
I'm always wary of the "world famous" repeated non stop. Real shame about the egg. Otherwise it looked a great starter. It's a pie if it's just a top crust. Full pastry top and bottom is a tart. The pastry looked absolutely lovely. Not a bad price for a good meal out. Another excellent and fair review. I would have given this the same mark as you Gary. It's a real good pie !!
😂😂who cares..a pie a tart.. i do think it' can be a regional thing...our scholl dinners in the 70's has a " Manchester Tart" it was pastry nased the jam and custard..no top..nom nom....battered chips wow Gary...for a treat only i think..🎉enjoyd the vlog...looked yummy🎉

The mixed grill here is underwhelming and overly difficult to eat off the shovel… but the ribs & chips are to die for 🤤… also I don’t rate their pies without a bottom… their frozen take out pies are much better as they are fully encased with pastry.
Hi Gary , keep up the reviews. Head down to Sweeney Todd's in Reading to try their traditional pies. They are absolutely amazing and been going for over 44 years, all homemade on site.. Their pies are proper encased and have a bottom. The pie in your review is more of a stew then a pie IMO . Take care William
I make my own pies, short crust bases and a flakey top, but, the fillings of course are most important! I have to bake in bulk with these. Deep pies that are filled, no half measures. Chicken and vegetable curried pies, Steak pies, ham and potato pies. All have their own gravies. The gravy truly is key! I make all the filling the day before so they marinate in the fridge overnight. The steak ones as the most popular as I make a thick red wine, herb, peppery gravy that has to be a good thick gravy. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😀
Glad you enjoyed it. Went about 6 months ago for first time and going back this Thursday for lads night out. Only tried the chicken pie so may try the beef one this time. The mixed grill is interesting and comes on a shovel rather than a plate. Such a quirky place and a great night out. Battered chips is a Black Country thing and most chip shops do plain, battered and mixed. Not the healthiest but certainly tasty.
Thankyou , for visiting one of my local favourites , I did the Desperate Dan pie challenge ! very tasty . The mixed grill used/still is served on a shovel ! love the content , see you soon

It always amazes me how so called chefs in the UK can't cook a decent fried or poach egg. If you were ever wanted to begin to work for the Roux brothers you had to demonstrate you could cook a fried or poach egg before you were even allowed next to the pot wash. As it should be if you strive for excellence
The actual story behind the Roux story was , it’s not just if you could cook an egg , they wanted too know how much care and attention you put into the preparation and cooking of it , the reason being if you put a lot of effort into making it perfect then you would be the same with all penetration and cooking .
Regardless of if the pies are indeed pies, it's great to see a local restaurant serving quality food doing so well amid a climate of cookie-cutter chains. More power to them.
Thank you for these videos, Gary. As an American, I can learn more about British food and culture. I actually had never heard of Bubble and Squeak (from a different video) and appreciate learning these special dishes. Even though I have family heritage that is supposedly 40% British , I’ve never been even though I’ve traveled to many other places in the world. It’s like I’m missing a country and culture I’ve never even visited but still have a connection to. Hopefully one day I can give it a go and finally visit . 😊👍
Another great review. Chips in brown gravy is one of my favorite lunch meals. In Germany, most cafeterias will have a brown (mushroom) gravy available to top meat dishes, but I usually just ordered chips topped with gravy. So good, filling and cheap. And yes, overdone egg is one my pet peeves; I want that runny yolk.
Pastry on a beef stew does not make it pie. A pie is pastry enclosing the meat/veg. chicken. The meat looked wonderful - as did the black pudding cake. Enjoy your reviews as you are easy to listen to and not pretentious! Keep on with your happy reviews, and spare a chip for Cameraman.
I mean you’re speaking about a pie shop style pie (which I suppose they should do as they’re self styled as a pie place). However a pod isn’t just enclosed… there are countless variations of pie which are only topped. It’s wrong to suggest otherwise
@@flower-ss2jt Considering those dishes have existed for well over a century (that’s an understatement) and have been known as pies since their inception, yes they are PIES
"Is it a pie?" Well, my wife does a chicken, bacon, and leek pie exactly the same way with just a lid on top. It does us two days. 😋 So you'd have 'er indoors to deal with if you didn't call it a pie. 😂
I live near the pie factory and have been there many times over the years. All the food is cooked on the premises not bought in. You need to book a table in advance for evenings, Sundays and holiday times. Years ago they used to have entertainment on Saturday evenings and it was always packed not sure if they still do. They do a lovely Sunday roast carvery you get lots of mouth watering meat, very filling meal. Never had a bad meal there and don't know anybody who has either. Think your not so runny egg was a one off. I would always give it a 10
Delighted to see battered steak fries (what they are called in the USA) turning up in Britain, they are FANTASTIC. And the pie looked GREAT!!! America can't make a decent meat pie at all. Sure miss the FABULOUS pies I would get from bakeries when I lived in New Zealand. And the quirky establishment itself is enough to make it MORE than a destination eatery. Super upload, Gary. You're really swatting the ball out of the park (so far) in 2024.
Nice to see someone braving the black country and giving a great review. Never tried the pies myself but we used to have a Mad o' rourke's where I live, it always seemed a great place to visit and it's a shame it went. Anyway, thanks again for the great review.
Gary, I absolutely love your channel. Literally watch every video you release. You must try Brigadiers in Bank, London (Indian sports bar, quite pricey but delicious) and Dishoom in various locations in London. Both are excellent and I think you’ll enjoy. Regardless, thank you for your effort, passion and authenticity. Keep up the great work!
@@GaryEats yes, good question. I’d say certainly avoid Shoreditch and Covent Garden as they get really busy. From experience, the Kings Cross location is a good shout as it’s very big and (I think) will be the least busiest by comparison. If you want to try something different, try their breakfast menu. Some great breakfast items with an Indian twist (eg. The Big Bombay), plus it’ll be a lot less busy.
Hi Gary, afraid I do no think it is a pie without a bottom layer of pastry with the filling and of course encased with the top layer of pastry for me that is a pie, the chips looked so Amazing glad you enjoyed it keep up the 👍 work.
Hi Gary - looking forward to your new vids after my two days of travel. / Yep - looks like a great eating experience ! Chips are epic for sure! / Mark,
Been there a couple of times in the past. The fact you need to book just shows how it’s grown in popularity over time. Just looking at that pie and chips made me feel peckish - just before bedtime
A very fair and entertaining review! It's particularly impressive that you managed to capture the audio despite the extremely challenging background noise. Some great camera shots in this one too. I'm fascinated to try battered chips, though I remain unconvinced by a pie with only the top made of pastry. My only recommendation is that Tipton is very proudly part of the Black Country, with pies like this being part of the local heritage. It's totally forgivable as you're not a local, but introducing it as 'just outside Birmingham' misses chance to highlight the Black Country and its proud towns such as Dudley. There's a great museum nearby called the Black Country Living museum which is worth a visit. Keep it up Gary and Cameraman!
Brilliant, honest review again Gary. Well done mate! I love the Pie factory and its literally 2 mins away from my house, a proper old school Tipton pub. Great review Gary, been there a few times over the years and find them to be pretty reliable for good food. Battered chips have become a standard thing around the black country area especially in chip shops. More reason for you to visit Wolverhampton now with your love of the battered chip. 😁
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman, well what a great place for pies with great fillings, i looked at there menu on line and wow what a choice. A first for me tonight iv never heard of battered chips but they really do sound amazing. Im in a bit of a dilemma now for my trip down there on Saturday, is it Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory or the Soho Tavern you reviewed the other day 🤔🤔🤔 Chris.
Haha Chris. I would go for the Soho Tavern and make a quick stop off to Mad O'Rourke so you can have a go on them battered chips. Make sure you eat healthy for the rest of the week though. Thanks mate.
Hi Gary The pastry reminded me a bit of the old Fray Bentos “pies” in a tin. Your “pie” had a decent filling unlike a Fray Bentos offering which just had a large helping of thin air complemented by a minuscule amount of some gravy related slop in the bottom. Those chips looked epic and I’m going for try and recreate them at home😉 Thank you for sharing👌🏻

So if you worked for Booker you were delivering pre-cooked meals prepared at Bookers depot. I used to work for the other pub food providers. I've actually forgotten their name.
@@swinderby No, absolutely not. Booker don’t just do pre-prepared meals - in fact, the majority of their Catering sales are the base ingredients. Booker provide a good range of fresh produce which I currently use in my business - especially the fresh meat & fresh vegetables. I think the only frozen produce I delivered to the Pie Factory was ice-cream.
I’m a Geordie and my mother used to cook that kind of pie in the 70s and 80s.. she called it “ pie crust “ and it’s more or less the same as a Fray Bentos pie that comes in a tin. The one we used to have was baked in a huge glazed earthenware dish and my mother always put this strange glazed earthenware blackbird in the middle to prop the pastry up from sagging in the middle and it had its beak pointing upwards with a hole in the end to allow the steam to escape. The filling was made from big chunks of stewed steak and sliced onions in nice rich thick gravy, it was delicious.
Haven't been to the Pie Factory in 25 years, used to have some great live Irish music. Cow Pie and a pint (or several) of Lumphammer. Used to be a small chain, my nearest were the Dry Dock in Netherton, the Tumbling Sailor in Kidderminster, and the Pack Horse in Bewdley. All very quirky. Happy memories.
Where I come from it's called a Pot Pie. Very popular in Aussie pubs. Gravy needed a bit more body, but the meat and the pastry looked nice. Good review, keep up the good work Gary.
Excellent. I don't care if a pie is encased in pastry. Had too many soggy pukka suet ones now. Agree the starter looked poor and those chips looked great. Happy New Year Gary.
Good stuff Gary. Really like the look of the place. I have to agree with some of the others in the comments that a pie is something fully encased in the pastry, not just a dish with it on top.
Hi Gary, I went to Mad O'Rourkes about 30 years ago and had the Desperate Dan Cow Pie. I could really eat in those days. I had already had a couple of ham salad rolls in pubs on the way but finished the pie (horns and all). Later on back in Brum I went for a curry. I must admit I did struggle with the ruby😊 The pie was good value, apart from the meat there were big chunks of potato and other veg and it was hotter than the sun temperature wise. Really enjoyed it though. No room for any chips so I cannot comment on those. Keep up the good work Gary.
You needed a pint of Lumphammer to complement the pie. Mad O’Rourkes is a wonderful place - I’ve not been for many a year, but this shows me I need a return visit.
Hi Gary, I think a pie should be encased in pastry, is it the best pie… my opinion not.. the steak etc looks amazing.. the starter looked so dry. Battered chips looked great and delicious.. Another great review.
Great review as always. Interesting place for a visit, and I would if it wasn't so far. As others say, it isn't really a pie if not encased, but then again you wouldn't get the the lashings of very tasty looking gravy without the pie having a very soggy bottom, so swings and roundabouts I suppose.....looks like you could have done with a spoon mister, but didn't take you long to dip a chip.....just as I would have done!
Now,that’s a good pie and chips and I would happily pay that ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌 If I were to be picky but not critical over the screen,I’d want the pie totally encased in what looks like wonderful pastry….Great find sir.
Thanks for taking us back here. We used to love it, Pint of Lump Ommer and a desperate Dan cow pie. They used to do donkey burgers ( no donkeys were harmed) as well, do they still have those? They were bostin! Us Blackcountry kids were raised on battered chips! Is there still sawdust on the floor as there used to be?
Despite being the Pie Factory, the quirkiest thing about the place is the mixed grills. They come served on the head of a shovel. Some people say the Pie Factory is a tourist trap but I think that does it an injustice; the food there is well worth the money.

Hello Gary, greetings from the Dallas Metroplex. I subcribed to the channel between Christmas and New Years and could not be happier. The content is top rate. Looking forward to catching up on all of the videos that are available and those to come.
Hello to Dallas. You're very kind Gregory - thank you mate.
You have a great presentation style Gary and I look forward to many more reviews!
Thank you my friend!
That pie looked delicious! Thanks for another honest review
My pleasure!
Gary, the food looked absolutely beautiful. I liked the look of the chips' brilliant price, another great review 👍
Cheers Paul. The chips were superb!
Brilliant 👏
Great review, Gary 👍🏼
I was gutted when you cut the egg and it wasn't runny, I felt like I was sitting there for a moment 😄
I was expecting a full pastry pie, not just a pastry lid, but it did look tasty!
You and me both! Cheers Warren 👍🏼
I hope you're ok now..👊✊
This lad is struggling with ptpd.post traumatic pie disorder.
I would have asked for a new egg but hey, that's just me
That's the best pie I have ever seen. Such a great review. Your food reviews are the best. Thanks 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Sue. Agreed. Needs to be encased in pastry to be a pie in my opinion.
The pie filling looked really tasty, although I think the gravy may have been a little thin to have been fully encased in a pastry crust. Battered chips huh, I hope they come with a side order of a defibrilator!!
That would be more than needed Greeno. Will email you very soon mate.
Agree, a pie should have a thick gravy and be fully encased. Most Black Country chips are battered and often orange on the outside. Fabulous!
Hi Gary, before you even asked about the pie, I said that is NOT a pie, It is a cheat pie 😂, think I like the idea of the black pudding cake, I love black pudding 😋 thank you for another great review ❤😊
😂cheat pie,nice one
Yep. I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie". Thank you Trudy!
Thanks for the review Gary and Mr C. Would have liked that pie dish with mash and cabbage as looked like stew with puff pastry topping. I prefer a proper encased pie personally but not a bad effort
Thank you!!
Trust Gary to give you an honest review on food without any nonsense or drama. Nice work Gary.
Thank you very, very much
Nice one Gary.
Great to hear and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I definitely feel disenfranchised when I'm presented with a pie with just a hat on. A pie isn't a pie without the meat being fully surrounded by a delicious pastry.
Indeed.
you could not surround the meat with pastry as the amount of gravy would just make it soggy.
there was only meat in the pie. no onions or anything else.
Yes, not in this case but generally speaking.@@davidsworld5837
It's technically a pie. However it is a Pot pie and should be described as such on the menu.
Im backcountry through and through. Orange chips are the best and apie without sides? Trying to be posh ay it!
This channel gets better and better.
Thank you James!
If there is over 6,000 views, why not over 6,000 thumbs up? You are a great reviewer Gary!!!
Thank you Ricky. Much appreciate you all watching!
Great review as Always! Really like your channel and hope you will get millions of subs , keep being such an honest humble and a good lad as you seems to be, we need more people like you in RUclips.
Thank you my friend. That means a lot - new upload coming tomorrow!
The pie with just a pastry lid is a huge deal breaker for me. Food looks lovely and the starter is really innovated. I love my egg as they've done it.
No problem 👍🏼
I've been there and I totally agree. Personally I think it's overrated although you can obviously do a lot worse. I've found the best pies to be Lancashire/North East, especially from a standard bakery.
Black Country chips are the best. Can't wait for you to try orange chips 😁. Can't believe you've been in my neck of the woods! Please come back!!
Cannot wait!! I'll be back very soon.
I ay lived there since 1989 but in the mid-late 80s my dad used to drive from Wolvo to a chippy in Bilston which was renowned for orange chips, I think they were battered. Do you know if it's still there?
@@simonh6371Probably Majors Chippy
Gary you're rapidly becoming a good reviewing legend my friend 🤤
Haha thanks Kevin 😄
@@GaryEats I obviously meant 'food' 😄😄
We Kiwis are pie fanatics..we love a meat pie. We'd be taking it back cos they forgot the pie bottom !!! Pastry all round is what makes a pie...
I understand your point completely
Many thanks mate. I appreciate that. Have a good one happy New year to you!
Happy new year!
I'm sold on the chips and the "pie" looks generously filled. It looks quality, hearty food.. A pint of Guinness with it and you've got a proper treat.
Oh yes.
Andrew you wouldn't call a pork pie a tart.A tart has pastry on the bottom and a lot of the time the sides aswell
Thank you Andrew. Glad you liked the video and much appreciated for the kind comments and support as always.
@@CheshireCat6639 I remember the manchester tart at school dinners, Never ever saw it anywhere else. But it was deliciious. If you were licky you got seconds.
@@conormacdougal2344 my step mum was a primary school cook she used to bring a left over tray home on Fridays..delicious! Not allowed now...jeeze mad rules these days...
The mixed grill here is underwhelming and overly difficult to eat off the shovel… but the ribs & chips are to die for 🤤… also I don’t rate their pies without a bottom… their frozen take out pies are much better as they are fully encased with pastry.
a pie is NOT a pie without a bottom!
Slab of frozen pastry on top of the filling! Famous since pub pies started looking like this in the 1990's
Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".
@@aclubcalledRAGE ...bollocks!
what's the Mixed grill is amazing you obviously don't know what good taste is
Hi Gary , keep up the reviews. Head down to Sweeney Todd's in Reading to try their traditional pies. They are absolutely amazing and been going for over 44 years, all homemade on site.. Their pies are proper encased and have a bottom. The pie in your review is more of a stew then a pie IMO . Take care William
What do they contain though 😁
Thank you William. Will do!
Delicious. Can I taste one? Lol.
I hope you all have a great time John, please let me know
Gravy looked a little too runny for my liking , i probably would have ordered some mash to soak it up. Chips looked lovely 👍🇮🇪
No problem Jay 👍🏼👍🏼
A pork pie is a classic example of a real pie, top, bottom and sides encasing the filling! Looked very nice tho. Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Lovely with a bit of mustard or pickle
According to Oxford English Dictionaries, a pie is defined as "a baked dish of fruit, or meat and vegetables, with a top and base of pastry.
Indeed Jamie. I have to agree it needs to be encased to be a pie in my opinion.
What about Admiral's/fish pie? Or Shepherd's pie, or Cottage pie?
@@simonh6371Jamie won’t reply
Thankyou , for visiting one of my local favourites , I did the Desperate Dan pie challenge ! very tasty .

@@catharinecarrington2705 Catherine, have you been smoking something?
It always amazes me how so called chefs in the UK can't cook a decent fried or poach egg. If you were ever wanted to begin to work for the Roux brothers you had to demonstrate you could cook a fried or poach egg before you were even allowed next to the pot wash. As it should be if you strive for excellence
That would be a poached egg in uk.
i think Gordon Ramsey adopted this tactic from the Roux brothers too when he started out working for them
Fair comment Andrew. All the best.
The actual story behind the Roux story was , it’s not just if you could cook an egg , they wanted too know how much care and attention you put into the preparation and cooking of it , the reason being if you put a lot of effort into making it perfect then you would be the same with all penetration and cooking .
A pastry topping on a beef stew does not constitute a pie for me.
What about a cottage pie, I’m with you though a pie should be encased in pastry.
Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".
Regardless of if the pies are indeed pies, it's great to see a local restaurant serving quality food doing so well amid a climate of cookie-cutter chains. More power to them.
Exactly!
You're more than welcome my friend. Bubble is lovely!
Thank you very much for the information and the comment
Pastry on a beef stew does not make it pie. A pie is pastry enclosing the meat/veg. chicken.
The meat looked wonderful - as did the black pudding cake.
Enjoy your reviews as you are easy to listen to and not pretentious! Keep on with your happy reviews, and spare a chip for Cameraman.
Thank you Flower. He had one, loved them. Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".
I mean you’re speaking about a pie shop style pie (which I suppose they should do as they’re self styled as a pie place). However a pod isn’t just enclosed… there are countless variations of pie which are only topped. It’s wrong to suggest otherwise
@@xaoc6084 Because you call it a pie, does not mean it is a pie.
@@flower-ss2jt Considering those dishes have existed for well over a century (that’s an understatement) and have been known as pies since their inception, yes they are PIES
@@flower-ss2jt Look up what a pie is because you will see
"Is it a pie?" Well, my wife does a chicken, bacon, and leek pie exactly the same way with just a lid on top. It does us two days. 😋 So you'd have 'er indoors to deal with if you didn't call it a pie. 😂
🤣🤣🤣 that made me laugh.
Not a pie, its a stew in a dish with pastry topping.
You are correct. Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".
@@GaryEats 100%. Love your channel by the way, great stuff.
I would always give it a 10
No problem. Glad you love it.
What a lovely building interior. It looks like an old railway station. Quirky , I like quirky 👍
Their online menu looks very good.
This restaurant was definitely very quirky 🌹
Delighted to see battered steak fries (what they are called in the USA) turning up in Britain, they are FANTASTIC. And the pie looked GREAT!!! America can't make a decent meat pie at all. Sure miss the FABULOUS pies I would get from bakeries when I lived in New Zealand. And the quirky establishment itself is enough to make it MORE than a destination eatery. Super upload, Gary. You're really swatting the ball out of the park (so far) in 2024.
weve had battered chips before america was a thing turning up in britain lol
Thank you so much my friend.
@@1976darby Yeah, you lot would batter a kitten and toss it in the fryer.
Nice to see someone braving the black country and giving a great review. Never tried the pies myself but we used to have a Mad o' rourke's where I live, it always seemed a great place to visit and it's a shame it went. Anyway, thanks again for the great review.
I have to come back all of the time now for batterered chips.
Thanks Gary & Son another honest and great review. You two get around for your supper!! Keep it up lads 😘☕️
That’s very kind, Carol thank you very much. We are getting around.
You're too kind. Thank you and I have DIshoom on the list and I will try to get in there. Do you know which one is the quietest?
@@GaryEats yes, good question. I’d say certainly avoid Shoreditch and Covent Garden as they get really busy. From experience, the Kings Cross location is a good shout as it’s very big and (I think) will be the least busiest by comparison. If you want to try something different, try their breakfast menu. Some great breakfast items with an Indian twist (eg. The Big Bombay), plus it’ll be a lot less busy.
Brilliant review Gary. What a quirky place you found, love to have a visit. Thanks for another stonkingly good vlog. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it has to be encased in pastry for it to be a pie but that's my opinion.
Hi Gary, afraid I do no think it is a pie without a bottom layer of pastry with the filling and of course encased with the top layer of pastry for me that is a pie, the chips looked so Amazing glad you enjoyed it keep up the 👍 work.
I understand your point, Linda however, what about cottage shepherds and fish pies?
Hi Gary - looking forward to your new vids after my two days of travel. / Yep - looks like a great eating experience ! Chips are epic for sure! / Mark,
Thank you Mark. Safe travels.
Been there a couple of times in the past. The fact you need to book just shows how it’s grown in popularity over time. Just looking at that pie and chips made me feel peckish - just before bedtime
Indeed. Sorry to do that to you!
Thank you very much. The cameraman will have a smile on his face when he reads this comment. Yes, apologies. Thank you!
Brilliant, honest review again Gary. Well done mate!
I love the Pie factory and its literally 2 mins away from my house, a proper old school Tipton pub.
Wish you had tried their mixed grill so i could have seen your reaction when they bring it to you on a garden shovel 😂 absolutely bostin' fittle as us Tiptoners would say.

Im in a bit of a dilemma now for my trip down there on Saturday, is it Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory or the Soho Tavern you reviewed the other day 🤔🤔🤔
Chris.
Haha Chris. I would go for the Soho Tavern and make a quick stop off to Mad O'Rourke so you can have a go on them battered chips.
Make sure you eat healthy for the rest of the week though. Thanks mate.
Hi Gary
The pastry reminded me a bit of the old Fray Bentos “pies” in a tin.
Your “pie” had a decent filling unlike a Fray Bentos offering which just had a large helping of thin air complemented by a minuscule amount of some gravy related slop in the bottom.
Those chips looked epic and I’m going for try and recreate them at home😉
Thank you for sharing👌🏻
You’re welcome!

Gary, I used to deliver to here when I worked for Booker. Kitchen was always SPOTLESS. Great landmark
Now that's great to hear. Thank you!
@@swinderbyTbh they freshly cook all pie fillings and starters such as black pudding cake etc.
Very very nice.
Very quirky. Indeed.

Where I come from it's called a Pot Pie. Very popular in Aussie pubs. Gravy needed a bit more body, but the meat and the pastry looked nice. Good review, keep up the good work Gary.
Thanks for watching Andrew!
Amazing to see you visiting the pie factory ❤❤ xxx
I absolutely loved the chips wow xx
Excellent. I don't care if a pie is encased in pastry. Had too many soggy pukka suet ones now. Agree the starter looked poor and those chips looked great. Happy New Year Gary.
Happy New Year Dave.
Good stuff Gary. Really like the look of the place. I have to agree with some of the others in the comments that a pie is something fully encased in the pastry, not just a dish with it on top.
Thanks mate.
Cheers Mark. Enjoyed it!
You needed a pint of Lumphammer to complement the pie. Mad O’Rourkes is a wonderful place - I’ve not been for many a year, but this shows me I need a return visit.
It's great for sure
Wow, you’ve made me really want to try those chips! Maybe you’ll need to try that cow pie challenge now🤣 Great video again Gary!!
In the summer, I may return!
Used to go to The Pie Factory regularly for lunch when I worked in Dudley, great place
I fully agree with you
Hi Gary, I think a pie should be encased in pastry, is it the best pie… my opinion not.. the steak etc looks amazing.. the starter looked so dry. Battered chips looked great and delicious.. Another great review.
Yes I agree. Thanks!
Thank you mate 😄
Now,that’s a good pie and chips and I would happily pay that ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌
If I were to be picky but not critical over the screen,I’d want the pie totally encased in what looks like wonderful pastry….Great find sir.
I have to agree with you Glenda.
The battered chips looked delicious! There is a « chips are chips, fries are fries » t-shirt waiting to be made 😅😉
I call them frips when they are lurking on the real chip fence😂😂
Haha waiting behind the scenes.
Well that's an unusual restraunt, what a good review. THANKS Gary

More than welcome.
Despite being the Pie Factory, the quirkiest thing about the place is the mixed grills. They come served on the head of a shovel. Some people say the Pie Factory is a tourist trap but I think that does it an injustice; the food there is well worth the money.
Might need to give them a go next time!
