- Today I did some experimental gel printing developing a new technique. Graphite transfer technique. Making light weight papers on copy paper, rice paper and light weight black paper for future collage and art journaling projects.

I have accidentally transferred graphite drawings to my gel plate when I put a drawing underneath it to use as a guide for painting on the gel plate, but I never thought to use it as a technique! This is genius.

I had been wondering about using a baren on the gel plate so thanks for showing that. I feel that just using the gel plate as most do seemed to be ok, but I had wanted to do more of an actual print. So, thanks for showing this graphite idea!🙃 I have also seen a video where Oil sticks were used, I forget the brand. They worked nicely as well. It was on the Dick Blick website. So, thanks so much for doing this demo.!!🤗🙃
I have no had much luck with the shive oil sticks I bought on my plate. They seem to have a weird coating and won't write on the plate. Then when I get that off they just make a sticky mess. I have these new kingart gel sticks that I keep buying LOL I am going to try them on the plate soon.

This was fun and informative. I hate when you show us something super fun and I know I won't be home for weeks and get to try it for myself. I was wondering; if instead of activating the graphite with a water brush, you instead used a fine water mist on the plate, and then laid down the deli paper, if that might work. Hmmm? Well, you do encourage us to experiment. TFS
Thank you Carlotta :) I did mist the one I did with stabilo all pencil once I realized it would not transfer like the graphite. It was a watery smeary mess. Of course..stabilo is really reactive to water so maybe the graphite would be less mushy..hmmm.

Have you ever tried image transfer from laser prints on the gel plate. The tutorials here in RUclips make it look easy but I just can't get it to work!!

Looks like you had fun playing. I love the idea of the Beren (?) as I have a bit of arthritis in my fingers and I think this would help. I had a laugh about Snoopy and the Red Barron.

That was fun Shel! The possibilities seem to be endless on the gell plate! I have been meaning to get a baren for a while because my hands and wrists get sore but, I wasn’t sure if it would make that much difference, they aren’t cheap! 💕🇨🇦

Thank you :) I think it is allergies. The mesquite and palo verde trees are all covered in globs of pollen.

Thanks :) The graphite is embedded in the acrylic medium and needs no sealer.

This is cool Shel, thankyou - I will have fun making hand written text backgrounds with this. You might be interested in videos I've posted on using Chinagraph pencils (I think they're called China or grease pencils in US) to make drawings that transfer really well on to gel plates.

Hi Shel, I just came across your video here. I had a bit of an unexpected thing happen. I had put graphite on one side of the paper and then laid it onto the gel plate. It transfered onto the plate and now it won't fully come off. I've tried the various solvents to clean it off but I now have an accidental graphite design on my plate. Do you have any suggestions for how to get it off? I've made multiple transfers. They usually get a bit of it on there, but never fully.
Hello Ursula :) i have a couple suggestions. I use baby oil to clean off powdery things from my plate so you can give that a try. just pour some on and rub it around a bit with a soft cloth. Another idea for cleaning my plate that I use is hand sanitizer. It is good for getting crusty stuff off but it not as harsh as other cleaners. But, my best piece of advice is to not worry so much about staining your plate. It is a tool. As long as the stain isn't lifting onto your other work then just leave it. You probably have a hammer...it is probably rusty...but it still hammers nails right? Just think of the gel plate as one of your art tools.
Which side of the deli paper did you use, or does it matter?
I don't bother with sides on the deli paper. I am not sure I can see a major difference. I do pay attention on some of the rice papers I have. One side is very smooth and the other is bumpy so I use the smooth side usually.
Hi can you help me? I was doing this few weeks ago but the pencils and charcoal (I heard people saying that the more carbon in a magazine image the better the transfer) just sank into the gel plate and would not come back off 😟. I’ve used a variety of brands of acrylic and even the baby wipes can’t lift it 😞
Yes I can :) You can easily get it off using baby oil. Just get a cheap bottle from the dollar store and pour a bit on and then rub off with a paper towel.
I am really freaked out because I cannot get the graphite drawing up off my gelli plate..I have used "baby oil" - soap and water and nearly f**king EVERYTHING and can't get it off my plate..nor can I get the pastel-type crayon drawing out either..WHAT can I do??I am really desperate! in you demo it looked SO easy and I was using the 9B..please help me fix this?? thanks! Hi Cassie. You can try to remove it using gel hand sanitizer. The alcohol in that sometimes help. However, as long as the marks are not coming up into your prints then stop freaking out about it. The gel plate is a tool. Like a hammer. If your hammer has a bit of scuffing on it are gets rusty, do you stop using it? It still hammers right. Well your gel plate still prints even if it gets a few stains. Over time it will even yellow in color. That is the sign of a well love gel plate!
