I really like that you leave your fails in as well. A lot of artists only show the great ones, it makes me feel like a failure when I can’t get it to work and they make it look so easy 😊
Thank you for showing us that not all of our attempts are going to work. I see lots of videos and everyone they try works perfectly. I was so excited to try my homemade Gelli plate for the first time and I never got a good image. I got so disappointed. I’m still going to try again and will try different paint and paper. I was doing magazine pages and none of them worked….
I’m glad that you found this helpful Donna, I thought that showing the fails, there was a lot more that I didn’t show too 🤣🤨 would help beginners feel less discouraged 🤗
Lovely tutorial, love it when there is a Gift, as you put it, thank you for your help in sharing your work.. always fun and surprises on the art journey.
Thank you Susan. I find it very encouraging to see that not everything works as hoped and that it’s not necessarily user error. Looking forward to trying this again. 🤞🏻
Thanks for showing us Susan. 💗 It was reassuring to see the amount of trial and error that’s involved as I had the same experience. 😅 I often found I quite liked the first pull - of the ink onto the image too.
I noticed how a lot of artists keep a journal of techniques they tried. Also thanks for recommending the brand of wet strength tissue paper. I ordered some. Have been trying this with magazines but it was a flop. Will try with laser prints.
Thanks for this Susan. Your teaching style is so friendly, straight forward and informative. It excites me to see you using your own photos, which is something I’m keen to try with mine. I’m not very enthusiastic about using images from magazines. Fingers crossed I get a few good ones 😅
Just discovered your videos ~ great ~ thanks so much, Susan! As others have said, very good to show things that don’t work as well as the successes. Would love to see you talking about pages from the book you showed.
Hi Kate, I would be happy to do a video flip through of my board books to explain some of the techniques if you would find that interesting 😀 Glad you are enjoying my content so far 💙
Thank you, I took pictures of trees myself then used the background remover tool on canva. Unsplash.com is a great resource for royalty free images though
Thanks Susan. So that's an HP colour laser printer is it? I have a mono laser printer but I get the impression that wouldn't be sufficient even though the images would be black and white.@@susanmccreevyartist
Hey! I’m going to hypothesize the reason the pattern tissue isn’t working is how it’s made: one side of pattern tissue is almost glassine, the way it’s pressed and processed. It won’t have the grab that other tissues (or the book paper that grabs the paint so well) have. My guess is you’ll find those old book pages consistently pull all paint (no matter the brand) much better than the tissues - especially the pattern paper. :) Thanks for sharing your wins and losses here - I really enjoyed watching!
Thank you for the fabulous tutorial. Is it possible to use stamps on our gelli plates, and what is the best technique? Do you use a heat gun to set the inks and dry the prints?
So its just matt copy paper not shiny paper? I tried to transwer a bird image - quite high contrast, i thought but nothing came off 😮 I've also heard Amsterdam is the best for transfers.
Hi 👋 my paper is just regular copy paper. I’ve seen other artists ask for a high quality laser print satin finish and this gave good results. I like the Amsterdam paint for transfers, listed the ones I use in the description below. Jane Fasse and Drew Steinbrecher have good tips on image transfer 👍
I think I heard you mention a printer before. I don’t have time to research that. I could get a BROTHER HL-L2320D Mono Laser Printer from someone for under $100.00. Would this be a good printer? Thank you!
Hi Maureen, I have heard that the brother printers are good for laser printing, a few recommendations on the gelli print fb groups. The printer ink is pricey to replace compared to inkjet. You can take inkjet prints to a printshop and ask them to print out laser copy, highest quality satin finish. This would be a good way to do some tests before making a big investment.
Why is your gelliplate not accepting the paint at the top? (When you use your brayer to put the paint on) I have never seen this before. Is something coated on the gelliplate you can’t get off?
Would the pebeo be good enough on its own or does it need to be mixed with a heavier paint ? Ive been trying with system 3 acrylic and not getting a transfer? Wondering if its not heavy enough Thanks
@@susanmccreevyartist thank you yes Susan, this makes a difference, because if someone was working from an original b/w image, they would need to make sure it was not grayscale, and still in RGB on computer, because it's not really a b/w image unless you throw away color info making it a grayscale image. Did you just put it through the printer one time? Some people put it through multiple passes to ink it up, which I think is a ridiculous waste of toner.
Thank you Susan your technique looks doable, however for everyone out there who has never done this kind of technique, BE VERY MUCH AWARE!! this is not as easy as the videos make it look. I wasted a lot of money and time and was not successful. If anything almost traumatized me and made me feel so incompetent. I am renowned for not giving up and have done complicated art to a good standard. In any case all the best of luck.
It is a very trial and error process for sure, I try to show the fails as well as the success to show that it’s not that easy. Thanks for your feedback x

Lovely effects! Thank you for making the video. 💓💓💓
My pleasure 😊
This is one of the best tutorials i have seen. Good and helpful information without belaboring each approach.
Thank you! So glad you found this helpful 😀
Wow 😀 incrideble and i love the tree and branche it good idea .Thank-you so much for sharing 👍
You are welcome Jocelyn glad you are enjoying the videos 😀
Lovely tutorial, love it when there is a Gift, as you put it, thank you for your help in sharing your work.. always fun and surprises on the art journey.
Thanks so much 😊
I love your work so much, you are very inspiring, I have subscribed and await your spring course. Yahhhh, so much fun. Thank you
Thank you so much!
Another enjoyable session. Realised I have several of the products you recommend. Will have a go.
Perfect! Let me know how you get on with yours 😀
Thank you Susan, really inspiring as always ❤
Thanks for the tip about leaving the photocopy to dry! I would have been stumped if you hadn’t told me that when you were trying the other day 😀
Thank you Susan. I find it very encouraging to see that not everything works as hoped and that it’s not necessarily user error. Looking forward to trying this again. 🤞🏻
It can be frustrating to get right I’m there with you guys 😅
Yes I have found transfers very hard. Light touch for transfering image I think?
Love your test book. Love your Scottish accent. Love your work!! Subscribed 😊
Aww thank you! Much appreciated 🤗
Thanks for showing us Susan. 💗

Very nice prints!! 🙌🙌 Enjoying your videos.
Thank you so much I really appreciate the feedback 😀
This was great, thank you! Going to try it myself now.
Thank you for watching! 😀 Best of luck with your experimenting 🥰
Thank you for sharing your process with us!!
You are welcome Vonalda 🥰
They look amazing! Hope to give them a try soon. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I hope they work for you! It’s a very frustrating thing to get to work 😀
Thanks so much for sharing your process with us! This is so helpful... and inspiring as well! 🙏❤
I’m glad you found it helpful Janet 😀

I love the black and teal images, very happy accidents!
Thank you 😊
Thank you 😊
Love your brogue and I know Inverness because of Hamish MacBeth! Just a newbie with the belly printing. So thanks for all the ideas!
Belly printing!? That’s a whole other ball game 😂😂😂 I loved Hamish Macbeth too, I’ve got a wee westie too they are cute dogs 😊
I love trees, thanks for this video
Thank you for watching 😀🌲
Love your work! Where does one get the images like these to Laser print
Thank you, I took pictures of trees myself then used the background remover tool on canva. Unsplash.com is a great resource for royalty free images though
Very informative. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Susan, nice video. Do you print your images on colour laser copier at home or would colour photocopies from the local copy shop work?
Hi 👋 I use my HP printer but before I had one I used to get them printed at my local printers or library 🖤😊
Thanks Susan. So that's an HP colour laser printer is it? I have a mono laser printer but I get the impression that wouldn't be sufficient even though the images would be black and white.@@susanmccreevyartist
HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw
I’ve seen other people just using black and white printers with success too.

Ahhh! I think you might be spot on there 👍😀 will be careful which side I use in future 🙏
@@susanmccreevyartist oh yay! 😄 These little mysteries really make my little art world go 'round. 🤗
Thank you for the fabulous tutorial. Is it possible to use stamps on our gelli plates, and what is the best technique? Do you use a heat gun to set the inks and dry the prints?
Not a good idea to use heat on a gel plate, stamps work well though 😀

Not sure what you mean? If there’s ever paint I can’t get off I use baby oil and that works 👍
Would the pebeo be good enough on its own or does it need to be mixed with a heavier paint ? Ive been trying with system 3 acrylic and not getting a transfer? Wondering if its not heavy enough Thanks
I don’t mix with heavier body, student grade works well for me 😀
This may be a silly question, but how did you isolate your photo to be just the tree on the page?
Not silly at all! I used the background remover on Canva 😀
@@susanmccreevyartist Good to know~~!
you printed in color setting , BEST QUALITY? but you had b/w tones, or switched to b/w filter but still kept at rgb file?
Your getting a bit technical for me lol 😂 I printed a black and white image in colour settings, best quality. Hope that is what you were asking 😀
@@susanmccreevyartist thank you yes Susan, this makes a difference, because if someone was working from an original b/w image, they would need to make sure it was not grayscale, and still in RGB on computer, because it's not really a b/w image unless you throw away color info making it a grayscale image. Hi Jaime, I did actually try putting through the printer twice but the image wasn’t exactly aligned and it ended up like double vision 🥴
@@susanmccreevyartist of course.. very impractical..some internet advice is not great!
