It's quite common for top level weighlifters to go into powerlifting after they retire, like Oleg Perepetchenov or Mikhail Koklyaev. However Chen Wei Ling is probably the only one in history to be Olympic and IPF champion. And without a doubt the only one to do both just one year apart. She was training and competing at the top level of both sports simultaneously, for years. However she technically didn't win the Olympics on the day, she went from third to first after doping bans. And even then I'm still certain no one else has medalled at the Olympics and been IPF world champion in the span of a year, or perhaps at all.

It would be interesting to see weightlifters take part in powerlifting maybe during their off seasons. Using the stiff bars and steel plates might make a difference but they would get an advantage from using a powerlifting belt, proper knee sleeves and wrist wraps. If she could squat 220kgs, bench 80kgs and deadlift 185kgs she would be very competitive for a total medal but there are some great well rounded athletes right now in the 57kgs class so it would be tough.

Imagine beating people (PL) who train the actual lift competitively with your accessory lift.. Squats are not even the priority of WL as the competition lifts are the snatch and the clean & jerk. You have to train these movements aside from squats vs people who just train the squat, bench and deadlift. To add, WL squats are no question below parallel unlike their PL counterparts that sometimes seemed a gray area if it is below parallel (good lift) or just parallel (no lift). Thick lever belts and tight SBD knee sleeves that PLifters use can easily add kgs which aren't used by WLifters when squatting.
Historically, PL was just an offshoot of WL. It was also started by weightlifters. This is why it is impossible to see two lifting sports in the Olympics. It will be too redundant with Weightlifting (the original) being more fast paced, exciting, and mind blowing.
Weightlifters (not just Kuo) can compete in PL just to break a record as they are breaking PL records on a normal training day. Perhaps the flex or prestige on being a WR powerlifter is not enough or worth it for them so they don't bother to even do it once. Being in the Olympics, even if not finishing in the top 3 seems more important for them than winning or becoming a record holder in PL.

She is fantastic and would surely do incredibly well in powerlifting. I will say, though, that one factor that I believe is often overlooked when comparing weightlifters to powerlifters, is the inevitable shift in weightclass that ocurrs between the sports. Powerlifters need significantly more upper body mass than weightlifters, which means that they can carry comparatively less lower body mass at a given weightclass. If a weightlifter wanted to do well in powerlifting they might sometimes have to add 5-10 kg in upper body mass while keeping the same leg size, hence competing at one or two weightclasses above where they are currently at. Said another way, we might have to look one or two weightclasses above to make a fair comparison of squat performance.

Also women are considerably weaker from upper body than men so it would definitely be easier for a woman to transition successfully to PL, especially since the benchpress nowadays rewards more contorsionnism than strength, especially in the women's division ( even though the rules were "patched" in the good direction this year )

yeah this was seen with toshiki. when he competed he put up an insane squat, a pretty good deadlift, but just average bench. now that he’s training more for bodybuilding, he’s easily repping his max bench from his powerlifting days. but i think a much bigger issue is just how strict their form is. they sacrifice absolute weight for positions that translate better to the clean and snatch. which is perfect for weightlifting, but doesn’t go well in powerlifting. many weightlifters deadlift less than they squat because they keep a strict extended upper back position and utilize more leg drive rather than the posterior chain. many also don’t grind out heavy squats. some do, like the chinese, but i’ve seen a lot of weightlifters bail a squat they could’ve otherwise made because it slowed down.

Watching her work out is a treat. Excellent form in every lift she does. Note how deep she goes; all O lifters squat deep--ass to grass--on the back squat and, of course, the front squat. With powerlifters, they go down just past parallel and tend to use a much wider stance. She doesn't, and that shows just how strong she is. IDK what the PL record is for someone in her class in the squat, but if she decided to specialize, she could easily, IMO, set records.

One difference between top powerlifters and weightlifters is the level of governmental support. I know that lifters like Solfrid Koanda doesnt have a massive support system, but in general I think many of the best weightlifters have governmental support through their countrys olympic programme.

Powerlifting is more 'grind it out' whereas Weightlifting is far more explosive movement. Powerlifting is bench press, squat and deadlift. We have all seen Kuo squat huge weight with perfect form, going beyond parallel which is rarely done in Powerlifting. There is one of your videos where she easily deadlifted and shrugged at the top (although she didn't take the bar back down under control as they do in Powerlifting) 165kg. If she practiced deadlifting, I think 200kg would be easily within her reach. I've not seen her bench pressing in any video, so that may be the lift which would inhibit her progress in the sport of Powerlifting. That said, she has great upper body strength, so with some practice I think she would put up impressive numbers in the bench press as well.

Bit unrelated but I think it’s annoying how powerlifters are seen as strong when they move weight a few inches but weightlifting is extremely fast, and vicious and ACTUALLY produces force but it’s less popular than powerlifting(to the point where in the gym people even mock weightlifting but will support certain powerlifters who don’t even care about form)

It's nice to see weightlifters or any lifters lifting heavy. That said, even in squat, many squat attempts by weightlifters would be deemed invalid. The foley of ass-to-grass or deep squatting is that many people immediately consider it as a valid squat attempt, when it is NOT. These are valid squat, in terms of weight training and other sports.
However, powerlifting rules are stricter and technical. After all, that is the sport itself. And yes, powerlifters aren't really the most appropriate gate keepers of such movement. They themselves have skewed the rules and techniques that it looks weird and absurd to regular lifting audience. It nonetheless rules out that the fact that most weightlifters' squat attempts would be deemed illegal or invalid in powerlifting rules. That should be fine. Weightlifters are weightlifting athletes, their sport is weightlifting.

As soon as she puts a 20kg power bar with no whip and metal plates on her back she'll probably squat 5-10% less. That said, with some specific training she'd still be able to take the squat record or at least close to it.
For bench obviously she'd need years of training to catch up to the specialists, if ever, and the deadlift will suffer the most, again because of power bar and plates, no straps and a more convincing lockout required in powerlifting.
If she wants to be a good all around lifter she'll have to bulk up and at the 63s there are freaks like Lya who she's years behind.
So the verdict is: Squat gold and maybe world record
    Middling Bench
    Middling DL
Maybe 4th or 5th if competition isn't too stiff

if she cuts 2kg from her WL weight class to the IPF 57kg she would go against the likes of bobbie butters squatting 185.5KG at europeans in 2022 as well as maria htee squatting 178.5 at commonwealths in 2019 or meghan scanlon squatting 178 at worlds in 2019 :) this doesnt include two untested athletes in stefanie cohen and marianna gasparyan who both squatted 190 and 220 respectively :) putting quo in quite a commanding position squats wise.

When it comes to basic lower body strength, I don't think there is a real difference between olympic lifters and powerlifters. They both take the squat very seriously. If you did a squat only competition, I don't think that powerlifters would excel at that, at all. While a powerlifter's technique might be more specific for this event, they would also hold a lot of useless upper body mass, which would only put them in a higher weight class.

As a former weightlifter and now powerlifter. I just will say that even though they don't compete at it, the squat can't really be called "just an accessory lift" for weightlifters. I don't know all the different methods, but the coaches I've talked to insist that the most important lift on WL apart from the competition lifts of course it's the atg squat

  •  Год назад

usapl 60kg squat record is currently 178kg // ipf 57kg world record is 185.5KG // then the 63kg ipf world record is 213kg and thats by Lya of france whose considered one of the best pound for pound female lifters in the world. The squat would def translates because she hits depth so she would be fine and in contention for a WR if she pushed squat forsure. The lack of bench press would really hurt her total, id imagine her pull could be very good too with some consistent training given her strength base already.
