    Have a Fluval evo 13.5. I actually had an issue with nutrients being too low causing my zoas to not grow or grow very slow. Even caused a hairy shroom to shrivel up. Said simply they do like a bit higher parameters than other sps lps corals.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад +2

      Simply touching a zoanthid or palythoa rarely causes any sort of reaction. When it's most likely to cause problems is when you're fragging them (cutting them) and they get into an open cut or into your eye/mouth. If you wear proper PPE like gloves, eye protection, and a mask while fragging, chances for something bad happening are very very low.

    Informative video, but honestly I feel like that danger warning is pretty unnecessary. I’ve never heard of or seen a single person become sick from them. It’s like creating a video about installing a drier or something and giving a stern warning that a hot drier can burn you. How realistic is the danger posed to someone from a hot drier? About as realistic as the danger from Zoas.

    • @matthewbrstv38
      @matthewbrstv38 2 года назад +4

      I definitely understand that. My concern is not so much from zoas, but that most beginners won't know a paly from a zoa. I have a friend who almost died from palys, not realizing they were toxic. So I'll always error on the side of caution with these corals, just to make beginners aware. But point well made that the risk from zoas is very low!

    • @Arcflash207

  • @Bullshitvol2
    @Bullshitvol2 2 года назад +1

    Zoanthids are definitely NOT beginner corals. Sure, some are, but so is montipora from the SPS category. They are a host for a lot for of diseases, more than any other corals. They also hate changing parameters, which is unavoidable though after you bought them. A single mistake in the beginning (too much light of flow) can stress smaller colonies out so much, they will never recover. Sometimes some polyps just close up and die for no reason, and sometimes whole colonies do that while other zoa morphs look perfectly healthy.

    • @matthewbrstv38
      @matthewbrstv38 2 года назад +1

      Huh, interesting take for sure. I definitely agree about the pests, especially aiptasia, but I've seen beginners have great luck with zoas!

    • @Bullshitvol2
      @Bullshitvol2 2 года назад +1

      @@matthewbrstv38
      "beginners have great luck with zoas" Yeah, luck is the proper cue. But what if they are unlucky?
      A personal example:
      I'm feeding my tank a lot...like A LOT (fish only eat 10% of that food). My water isn't the cleanest (turbidity)... but I still have 0 phosphates and 0 nitrates, even though my skimmer is shut off. Most of my corals were thriving due to organic nutrients, but some zoa strains just melted as soon as I put them into my tank. They were only able to survive after I started dosing additional free phosphate and nitrate simultaneously to the tons of food products I'm throwing into that tank.
      How is a beginner supposed to know he needs to dose nutrients even though he feeds a lot?
      Another case:
      I wanted to reduce my temperature to 23 °C to save electricity and have some buffer in case of hot weather. Everything was was working out great...for a week. Then my Alien Explosion Zoas suddenly closed up. But only them. They only recovered after I increased the temp to 25°C celsius again, but it took them several weeks to look healthy again.
