If a zoa colony often has polyps closed up with lights on then it doesnt like high light so move it down lower or to a shaded spot. And if a colony doesnt have nicely extended tentacles then it probably wants more light and flow so move it up higher.
Hi there! Been considering getting back into marine fish after a 10 year hiatus. These videos have definitely helped me make a decision whether to invest or not! Thank you Reef Dork
Thank you so much for this video, currently a beginner making a zoa garden! I bought a small colony and also attached to other frags onto the rock, hopefully they’ll grow out onto the rock and eventually I can pull the frag off, resell then put a different zoa frag there.
I grew zoas like mad for about 3 years, then slowly they all melted away, I had bottomed out nitrates and phosphates, that caused cyano. Now it's taken over a year to get back to a healthier (not perfect) tank I would try zoas again but the prices seemed to have rocketed.
I just recently got 4 frags... Eagle eyes, Roadioactive dragon eyes, kedds reds, and play boy bunnys, and they had some fruit loops hitchhikers on them
@@deanfielding4411 I meant that there was a couple fruit loop zoas growing on the same frag as the play boy bunnys. So they weren't really "hitchhikers". Thanks for the question (・∀・)
Great little corals, some of mine grow crazy fast, some don't. +1 on the AB+ advice, target feeding it combined with a dip has saved a few corals on me in the past. Great stuff.
Hi Alex, another great video, I gave up on Zoas, every time after a while, they just melted away, I was gutted, yet I have some palsy’s I think they are called and I just can’t get rid of them 🤷🏻♂️ l always look forward to Fridays 👍👍
Hi mate .. love your videos and presenting style! I’m just starting a 30cm high nano with a mariglo 15w led blue/white .. other than zoas what other corals do you recommend for this light/depth combo .. I wish I had a par meter but I’ve spent a crazy amount already on this tiny tank!
@@ReefDork Thanks fella, but what about GSP, Pulsing Xenia, Branching Hammers, Duncans etc .. you've put me off leathers and mushrooms in your "boring corals video" lol
Loving my Zoa garden, but it isn't growing very quickly. Think they are missing the iodine, as this was 0 on my Triton ICP test. Great video as always 👍
Great video 1) How do you test for iodine? I've seen some reefers swear by them and from research, it seems to be a dose old school reefers used to do 2) You touched upon vermited snails..do you have them? How do you deal with them? I heard bumble bee snails help, but also instances where they don't eat them..seems like the vermited has no predators..an alpha snail!
I only go by icp tests for iodine. If old schoolers do something, it's often good! I do have vermetids - i've added bumblebees but I'm not expecting them to do much! Someone needs to discover a vermetids eating nudibranch!
I do love a Zoa! Mine are stretching at the moment. I reduced the whites during the day for more blue and they don’t like it. Another reason for me to get Rads soon 😌
I have a dragon face pipe fish in my nano tank I’m a beginner I’ve recently added a small zoa colony in my tank but the pipefish seems to be bothering them a lot hovering over them they close up and since then half of them haven’t even opened up , I don’t know what to do to treat the coral for them to be happy again and should I get rid of the pipefish ?
The pipe fish won't be interested in the zoas but there might be tiny critters on the zoas he's interested in. Run it through a coral dip and see if anything drops off
Hi Alex, I’m dosing the same ati iodine as you, just curious how much you dose, a day I’m doing 0.1 a day how much are you dosing or are you just making corrections off icps
Interesting, I literally had zoas at the beginning of my reef tank I had bought. They thrived and grew. However, they began dying and I didn' tknow why. I never tested my water before, either, so I got some expensive zoas food and they still didn't survive. I finally tested my water for the first time and realized that everytime the water dehydrated, I put RODI without salt into th etank. So after checking the water for the first time, it was at .011! NO WONDER THEY DIED!
Sorry, but this makes no sense. You’re supposed to top of water without any salt. If you keep adding salt water your salinity will keep rising. When your saltwater evaporates the salt remains. It does not evaporate with the water. That is why you only top off with plain unsalted water.
@@ReefDork oh whoops, too used to actual gardening, i know they aren't actual plants are there any varieties with longer stalks naturally? i really like parazoanthus gracilis and the classic brown/cinnamon palys for their more seperate looking polyps
Don't know what I'm doing wrong , every Zoa I buy nether seems to thrive and spread but just about survive then usually just melt away after a few months. The laser lemons I got from you last year have nearly all disappeared, they were "ok" for months but didn't spread to the rock i placed them on and now have started to melt away.Only about half the polyps left than what I started with .think I'll give up with Zoas full stop.
Actually apart from GSP and Xenia I can't seem to keep any other coral alive for any length of time.I have changed salt,ro unit , light, flow ,tested and tested and tested you name it I've tried it but I can't seem to grow any thing else, even a toad stool shrank and died in my tank!!!.Giving it to the end of the year then I'll throw the towel in get a bigger tank and go fish only.
@@ReefDork Thank you for the reply! So it’s not true that you can poison yourself while handling them? That’s kind of a relief, as I want to start a reef tank and was scared of some texts I read about Zoas.. gave up on planing them for myself.

Arc Woodstock Rainbow 🙂
Hey Alex, let's say one were installing an in-tank sump, where would he place the pump? Intake or outflow?
The return pump? In the final chamber.
Ok so it should overflow into the sump like a standard sump, thanks.

i sort of like the longer stalks, can the plant still spread healthily that way?
Coral, not plant. They're hardy so probably yes, they just won't be their happiest so probably won't show their best colours/growth.

Some palythoas are but you'll only ever know about it if you do something crazy like boil them

When you say dangerous toxins, are we talking dangerous to the other corals in the tank, or dangerous to humans working on the tank?
Deadly, to humans
I have zoa's in my shark tank. Totally fine in 40ppm nitrates!
Hi what are the Zoa at 1:10
Sunny D on the left, utter chaos on the right
What kind of sand you’re using ?
Ati Fiji medium and large grain
'Shrivel up like your todger in winter'

There still a mistery to me.I have 2 stones close to eachother. On one stone ther all open on the other stone there struggling to stay open.Weird
I've had a similar issue in the past - it's worth dipping the sad frag just in case but sometimes this just happens 🤷
scared to try zoa cuz of palytoxin.. anyone want to talk me into buying one?
You're 1,000 times more likely to get struck by lightning!
The toxin is only released if the zoo is cut. Take precautions if you are fragging them.
Just started dosing iodine,can't hurt
And they told me soft coral was bland and ugly
I’ve never been able to keep zoas alive for more then a few months :(
How do you get your acans so fat ! 🤣 do you target feed them ? Look awesome and so do the zoas !
