This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy - a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.
www.gatesnotes...
Climate Change is just too much. There is never any good news. Only graphs that get more and more red and angry. Almost every year breaks some horrible record, from the harshest heat waves to the most rapid Glacier melt. It’s endless and relentless.
We have known for decades that rapid Climate Change is being caused by the release of Greenhouse Gases. But instead of reducing them, in 2019 the world was emitting 50% more CO2 than in the year 2000. And emissions are still rising. Why is that? Why is it so hard to just stop emitting these gases?

And that's how I think we should view climate change.
Not as doom and gloom, but a oppotunity to innovate and improve!
It's just consumerism blaming the people for their byproduct. They emit so much more so let's stop buying from them and just reduce their footprint. Or we can regulate and stop them from being a business all together. Gas powered is just forced on us to keep those in power rich. We wanna have people trade in their car for a replacement that is modern and highly invested in keeping it green. The gov can work with car companies and have them scrap and recycle all those cars for new cars. But that just seems like it's be too much work for them, but if it's for a profit they'll make the sea part and move mountains for that extra penny

And that's where I'd wish my country Germany would have done things different. After the Fukushima disaster, we bailed out of nuclear energy. But as our push for renewables was and is still not advanced enough to replace nuclear (and maybe never will), we upped energy production in our coal-burning power plants. With this we also took away the chance for technological advances in nuclear energy.
I'd like politicians to sometimes stand their ground and do what's best and not what pleases the people most.
Nuclear is the energy option with least deaths per kilowatt by far. And with advancements in reactor technology, there are now reactors running - so called breeder reactors - that can burn the waste of a normal reactors in a way that what's left has a half-life of about 50 years rather than a few 10000. Unfortunately not in my country.
Can you kindly point me to any resources on these renewable nuclear plants? I'm genuinely curious
Closely similar to Italy - again, unfortunately
More nuclear power!!! Fuck solar and wind we need cheep and clean power like nuclear and hydro!!!
@@nafissaleh9942 Nuclear is not renewable per se. It's long term energy just like our sun, only by a fraction of the long term energy our sun is capable of producing. The only thing better than Nuclear energy for long term human survival is to directly harness the power of the sun itself. Which we will do in the future one day hopefully.

it may sound morbid, but the covid-19 crisis... kinda (numbers not very much not so clear) helped the number to stop growing for a while.. The shit still rising up and the effects the constant pumping of co2 have started to show, (which in effect, it also gave some motivation to some companies, not great but better late than ever i guess.) but yes, as morbid as it sound, the pandemic gave us just a bit of time.

Two new variants called "lambda" and the stupid but cleverly named "Delta plus" just showed up in the world, which that it still could help us in some way despite still being a tragedy.. But that doesn't mean that we need to depend on these virus to take the people out, we still need to act out before the population starts rising up again (which, yeah it will rise up sooner or later.) and pressure the companies to act faster..
@@Opossum_queenSo we get a bad thing like the pandemic, and we get more time to solve a bigger problem, climate change, cool I’m up for that if it means I don’t have to be in constant 90 degree weather in California’s desert like areas.

Most of them are from China and India who don’t have a similar government system to America and can’t really be bought into, especially in China.
These companies serve people, with necessities. Stop them and you'll just have now 71% of the people without energy - in other words, people in Middle Ages. Simple to understand, not to solve.
Ok so I'm going to guess that they're a few oil companies in that top 100.
You can't run a modern economy without oil, including the feeding the population part. Without oil you have one modern agriculture and the vast majority of people starves. Is that a viable solution?
Saying things like "but the top 100 companies" is counter productive because it's too big, ill-defined and you can't disentangle the parts we could make positive change from the parts we need to live.

if America goes this route with China sticking to carbon emissions America is screwed and communism influences North America, the reasoning for this is simple, China’s economy will see a significant amount of growth while the us economy stagnates. As a biomedical researcher I have recently read about research which tries to combat plastic waste pollution through directed evolution. Directed evolution is a process where proteins are changed in the laboratory over and over again to become much more efficient to do certain things. In this case, scientists are trying to make PET-digesting enzymes more effective in digesting plastic waste and they are actually quite successful (I'm planning a video about that if you are interested). Although this is only a tiny part of the overall solution, I think that innovative research might save us from the current climate change crisis!
Yeah i read that too. This might be more of a curse than a blessing however. Plastics are used extremely commonly exactly because it does not get degraded by bacteria. If this would not be the case plastic might become far less useful, imagine your computer or telephone falling apart and those are just small things. It might not be smart playing god with evolution.
Maybe the first thing is to innovate and change our ways we get and spend energy , then we can proceed to other ones or both but you know even making people aware of it is already hard enough what more if we talk about these?
one of the coolest things I've read in this comment section! I'm interested in that video

The thing is, nuclear power has advanced a LOT since we just started using it, and i really dont get why we arent using it as much. Nuclear energy is probably even safer than some other alternatives, and efficiency is just next level. I guess people are afraid of the "next chernobyl" but the thing is chernobyl's design itself was fucked, and not only that, it used uranium and plutonium which are extremely unstable. We already figured out how to use thorium in power plants and i think its just a no brainer to not use nuclear energy. And on top of that, its co2 emissions are even better than using solar panels. I THINK coal is just cheaper and thats why we keep using it. We are just rotten nothing more nothing less.
ok, so i researched nuclear energy a bit, figured out that keeping it pumping energy is actually cheaper than coal, but building the powerplants is expensive af. But its more worth it in the long run. Some countries actually are taking nuclear power plants down not because they are against it, but because most of them are old af. But the technology itself is actually insane. We are already figuring out how to reuse nuclear waste, which was the only real drawback to nuclear power. But I find it shocking that we still aren't using nuclear power as much, legit with the technology we have right now there's nothing to worry about. so many pro's not that many cons. Legit we only need to invest in that and were set for a couple hundred years till we have enough electrical storage to use renewable energy (since renewable energy isnt constant, we need huge power storage to have energy at nights for solar panels and at calm days for wind energy). I guess the only type of renewable energy thats relatively constant are dams since u aint gonna be stoppin the water flow, but dams have many drawbacks.

Feels like part of the reason we've been dragging our feet on phasing out fossil fuels and switching to low carbon alternatives is because this topic is SO politicized... how do you get around that? I know so, so many people who scoff at the idea of things like nuclear and solar energy merely because they arent fossil fuels. Its disheartening that a conversation cant even be had because of political dogma
People scoff at Nuclear power mostly because of Fukushima and Chernobyl. But modern nuclear reactors are very safe but countries like Japan are phasing them out due to public disaproval of Nuclear power
Also money
Ironically, fossil fuels contain trace amounts of radioactive particles (because everything does) and when you burn it, these particles go strait up the chimney and out into the atmosphere. A coal/gas plant dumps more radioactive fallout into its surrounding environment in a week that a modern nuclear reactor of comparable output does in its entire commissioned life.
Politicized? I haven't really heard that many opinions from ordinary citizens talking about explicitly _wanting_ fossil fuel power generation. I guess you might mean that stakeholders hold a lot of power politically. But that seems to be a more capitalistic issue. If the issue were any more politicized I have a feeling it would be in the form of holding more politician accountable for hurtful policies that favor the FF industry
It seems like the huge media companies and politicians paid for by oil companies have successfully brain washed them into thinking that this is a political problem rather than an environmental crisis that can easily wipe out humanity and halt their progress.
It’s sad to think that most people who watched this video, already understand and agree with the facts here. Unfortunately, the people who don’t understand will never find this video or simply disregard it.
Most people in power understand this to be true, but simply don’t care. China has a totalitarian government and could easily switch to a carbon neutral economy in a decade if they so desired. But their attitude is basically “it’s our turn to pollute the earth because you did it first.”
It's not that people do not agree, it's that people who actually have a say in what happens don't watch these videos.
They are also the ones in power
@@pedromeneses5661 it's also a lot of complacent choice making of the people from all over the world.

It's what happened to me. I initially disagreed with the points in the UBI video and Meat videos, but those videos made me want to do a bit more research, and I have since changed my mind.
If there's ANY channel out there to change minds, it'd be this one.
I would like to address a misconception about the safety of nuclear power plants. Many people believe they are unsafe and dangerous.
Nuclear power generation causes thousands of times fewer deaths than coal and oil do.
Nuclear accidents are nigh on impossible now due to the strict regulations implemented after the previous nuclear disasters. Even when an accident occurs, fewer people die than you may think. Chernobyl death estimates range from just a few hundred to about 60,000 at the most. Fukushima killed one person from radiation exposure. Compare this to global annual flu deaths which the WHO estimates at 250 000 - 500 000.
Nuclear power is extremely safe and, I believe, necessary to our goal of reaching carbon neutrality.

Then what about solar?
And even still the more energy we produce, regardless of clean or not, the temp will still go up. Energy=heat, so as long as we produce energy and more of it the temp will still go up
yeah nuclear energy is the future. Our technological advancement has basically reduced the risks down to none and its more space efficient than other sources like solar panels or wind turbines.
1 it’s the only realistic way to move off of coal
Thing is it takes like 10 years to build a reactor so it’s too late to beat climate change
People don't want to fight climate change.
In my small village (150 residents) a solar farm was planned. It should have been located on an unused strip of land directly at the highway. It was expected to tripple the villages budget due to taxes. But as soon as these plans were revealed a group of people brought the whole village to fight against it.
Now we still have a huge strip of land directly at the highway that nobody will ever use or look at, the small school will be closed and the 40 year old fire engine won't be replaced any time soon.
M8 millions of people want to stop it but stupid people who don't believe in it or believe its not doing anything won't allow it. And the government knows that but they side with the stupid people.
Were they worried about cows stopping giving milk? I’ve heard it’s true.........................
You should fight unnecessary legislation, so a private person can buy that "useless" patch of land and build a solar plant, or whatever he likes. He would, of course, more likely build a nuclear plant. But then, people would protest.
Bro you live in Switzerland? The scenario sounds kinda familiar XD
Democracy works only with informed citizens
During lockdown in Bangladesh; the citizens could see the Himalayas. The sky cleared in China, this the result of factories, I.C.E cars and businesses running less. This happened in 1-2 years. 28th February; a ICCP conference occured. It is said we need to cut the world's greenhouse gas emissions by 45%. Rather then this happening; it has grown by 14%. Though, there is hope, we have a brief window opened to leap out of. It is not all doom and gloom unless we make it (By producing more Co2). At one point in every species existence, they reach their max population. This could be on the horizon for us. There needs to be more action taken by us. Farms could be cut back on, this seems bad though if we do, nature can re-take. The Netherlands is a very small country; despite it's size. They are one of the top vegetable producers in the world. This is because they utilized their small space and therefore achieved great an accomplishment. Re-planting the rain-forests would help a lot. This world needs diversity to thrive, our planet is delicate. Only 35% of the wilderness remains to this day; 418 Co2 parts per million is in the air. Re-planting nature could seriously impact the numbers. Trees soak up Co2; thus slowing climate change. Switching to a more plant based diet could help us. David Attenborough said "The world can't support a tonne of carnivores, but it can support a tonne of herbivores." The world can live on without us humans; but we can't live without it and that is the reality. We are slaughtering our own planet, and non of us want it. We need to find balance, switch to renewables and eat less meat. (Eating meat is good, but not too much). Even biking to work, school, the park etc can impact climate change. But we can't just blame ourselves. We can look at big countries like USA; India, China etc. Like me, I can't do anything. But big countries/companies can. The ocean is at its peak for Co2 storage, when is the air going to be at its tipping point?

i wish people would get over there fear of nuclear power, because of poorly designed early plants, because nuclear power is by far the best compared to renewables which are not as clean as you would think and ofc fossil fuels.. france has i thnk 70-80% of its power come from nuclear.. germany has around the same ratio but with renewables, ultimately focusing all this attention on wind and solar is completley pointless in my opinion because nuclear is a power house and if only we spend asmuch time focusing on improving there designs instead of fostering and fanning public fear of anything nuclear.. we might actually get some where..... just my opinion
Added information, the fly gas of burning coal and other fossil fuels is 100-150% more radioactive than nuclear waste. Yes the waste stays radioactive for much longer, but it can be contained easier than a gas that can easily blanket an area.
I agree completely, peoples fear for nuclear is misplaced in this day and age. Nuclear is also a great way to help governments transition into using more rentable energy sources. Sadly we rely on the CEOs of coal on petroleum companies to help this conversion which just isn't happening, unfortunately.
Fear of nuclear should go away, yes. Although, nuclear power isn't perfectly clean. There's nuclear waste, and we *really* don't have a good way of dealing with it. Until we can find a way to reduce nuclear waste, nuclear power alone won't be enough to save us.
Necleus power plants are not renewable..... They require uranium, which isn’t that easy. Or to be more exact U-235, which is far rarer than normal uranium. They will eventually run out like oil, natural gas and fossil fuels.

Of course some of those alternatives are just too taugh for some people, but we could be getting used to them gradually, I guess.

I want to point out that when people find ways to use energy more efficiently it often leads to throwing out older, less energy-efficient products. Both the manufacture of the new products and the transportation of the older products are carbon-intensive.
A huge carbon expense that needs to be addressed is that of product processing. If I went to the store and bought canned fruit, they often say that they're grown in a South American country, but packaged in an East Asian country (usually China). Let's say they're from Venezuela - they go over 25000 miles, and over 3 months on the ship. It'd be FAR more efficient in terms of fuel and carbon to pack them in a nearby area.

Nuclear is expensive and time consuming to construct. Financially, it takes a long time to see profit from the investment. Investors naturally want to make money now, not 15 years from now. It's sad, but you can build 3 three natural gas power plants for the same cost, and since carbon tax isn't a thing, the company will profit much more quickly.

Well it's alright even if it's too late! Everything must come to an end eventually, though of course it is not a cry of defeat!
Same
The sad part is, most of those in power who actually CAN make critical steps towards stopping climate change, aren’t doing that. Instead, they’re looking for more ways to make themselves richer
They would rather spend time finding ways to debunk/argue with us instead of trying to help themselves and others do it. That is the definition of procrastination.
You can invest YOUR money into clean energy investments
Flying Llama what of ur broke
and theyre the ones were gonna see hanging from lamp post if our society ever grows a brain and doesnt let that happen but hey Trumps here so we dont gotta fuckin worry about a thing
i'd love to see someone who could stop natural earth cycles while they're at it too
As soon as the permafrost in Alaska and Siberia started melting, it was too late. At that point, even if we stopped all CO2 emissions. Stopped all the cars, trains, ships, non-renewable power plants, it was too late. From that point on, we had to start pulling more CO2 from the air than we add to it.
That was 5 years ago and we have done nothing to reduce the amount of C02 added to the atmosphere to negative values.
Is it too late? It's many years too late and politicians have no desire to upset their pay masters.
No, that doesn't make any sense. Try researching more
@@ComplicatedMoose137 Let me guess. I should 'research' by only watching Alex Jones, and NewsMax and Fox News. Right?
@@BabyMakR just ask chatGPT
@@BabyMakR I’ll help you out - methane emissions account for less than 30% of warming, and less than one third of methane emissions is natural, and even less come from Siberia and Alaska. Even if they never stopped emitting methane (which they will if we cut GHG) the rate of warming would be so small that it would no longer really be a concern. Also, it isn’t too late. Exceeding 1.5c or even 3c isn’t the end of the world. You can always prevent worse warming. Now if you know how math and industries work - the moment that a green technology becomes cheaper than the fossil fuel version, it will immediately take off and be deployed at unprecedented rates. And this is about to happen, if not already. I suggest following scientists on social media if you want actual updates.
We really need to get this video out to as many people as possible, quality stuff.
Agreed. Everyone should know about on how we can reduce carbon emissions! The first step I would suggest however is UNITY. If we can get everyone to work together and take action, perhaps we could finally solve this problem.
Yes
Absolutely
@Burn#Loot#Murder BLM Brahahahaha. Good one. Lets blame it on those 3 countries and proceed to have a clean conscience.
@Burn#Loot#Murder BLM lol USA is no different. It doesn't care either. Developed countries are equally responsible if not more. Just watch Kurzgesagt video on who is responsible for most climate change.

@@butterskywalker8785 specie's extinction is not so much linked to global warming, it's more about their natural environment beeing replaced by cities/crops and the most competitive species killing the others across the world because of boats transporting them

I do agree we need to stop China and their communist ways of destruction of the environment.
Can you imagine thinking this negatively? Wow what a horrible way to look at the world.
Money is fucking great dude. There is a reason why literally every culture that did long distance and large scale trading used it.
This is too optimistic we are already doomed
The truth everyone is afraid of saying.
Oh well..
See, this sounds easy. But as long as we’ve got stupid politicians, it’ll never happen. It’s all about money. And it will be the death of humanity.
