I bought the camera a week ago, so your full review wont influence my decision, looking forward to seeing it though! It's the most feature packed camera I've ever had, so I have no idea if I will work out how to use it fully. It's coming up to winter here, but the weather would make you think it was already, so I'm having a lot of trouble with the camera when it is really cloudy (I'm talking, not a spot of blue to be seen cloudy)! Start zoomed out and all is good, zoom right in and everything just goes way to dark. :-(
FnB If you zoom in first to get your light reading, you base your light reading on your zoomed in calculation and make sure that all the settings on the camera are fully manual, then when you zoom back out it may look a little bright but it’ll be a good average for the intended zoom. If when you find you can’t get bright enough when zoomed in you might have to bring the frame rate down or add a little gain. I find the results perfectly acceptable at 6db of gain. When I get a moment I’ll get back to you further with my experiments on the alternate gammas available that can increase the stops of latitude which you may require in extreme contrast.
Gun Hill Studios Thanks for the help! What i wouldn't mind though, would be you having a look at a video I put up where the light is bad (maybe late afternoon, not night though). I haven't got the video yet, had to many other things to do. People on DVXuser forum don't appear to do sports footage at all (ie. quick panning like you do on the Silverstone Classic video) so they haven't been much help. Not many of them have the camera either i think. There are so many variables (compared to what I'm used to) I'm also having trouble on what would be best to adjust for the most realistic appearance! My old 3CCD you just turned down the: -Sharpness -Color -Exposure -Contrast That stopped it pretending everything was always sunny, and grass was a lush green. Sometimes you want it to look the way it was and not arty. But I will keep working on that. Thanks again for the help.
I know what you mean and there is also a tendency for manufacturers to minimalise the manuals in an attempt to imply everything is easy. Excuss my spelling by the way I dont get a lot of sleep ;-) But yes I totally agree about realism. We do like to mess with stuff a lot at Gun Hill Studios but it is equally important to be able to capture things as they truly are. Im really gonna rinse this camera and I will get back to you about the areas it shines in. There are always short falls and compromises to reach a price unfortunatly but this camera is capable of stunning results and Ifeel the key is in making yourself some presets so you dont have to keep tweaking. Im going to do some colour tests in different white balances and Ill get back to you with my findings
I was wondering if you know if I can set the zoom in and out on my varizoom to slow start and stop on the HC-X1000. I cannot find anything in the manual or in the menu (but I am new to it right now). Rather than have to be super easy with it I am looking to be able to rock the rocker without it popping and looking ugly.
humble apologies for slow response if you need quicker replies checkin at www.gunhillstudios.com i don't always check everything here. Im not sure re the Zoom and Ive recent;y sold mine
hi, looking at some of the comments posted (upto 11 months ago) I guess you've now had plenty of time to use this camera and get to know it very well, I cant see the next review you mentioned anywhere but was just wondering how you've found the camera after nearly a year - ive just bought one and it arrives tomorrow, having watched pretty much every review on this camera I see not every one is a big fan - mainly due to low light performance, but I wonder if they are taking price into consideration? bottom line for me is I already have a Panasonic and wanted to stick with them and this was in my budget, maybe people would have a reason to be so picky if it were four grand for example? looking forward to your view on the camera, cheers, chris
yes I think its easy to moan without considering the price against features. Its a good all around camera although its worse taking the time to really get into some of the settings. Its a great camera if you play to its strengths. Its not great in low light but theres a lot of cameras at many times the price of this that aren't. The biggest issues I had with it was trying to match to other cameras. Oh and don't use more than six db of gain Oh and be aware that the processor has heat sinks that go straight to the outdoors. I would say my only real irritation was the view finder not working at the same time as the eye piece. on the plus 4k motorsport shooting with this level of zoom staggering
many thanks for your reply, looking forward to getting to know this camera, i don't think it has the sound zoom feature of the hc-x900 which i currently use - which is great for motorsport as when you zoom in it increases the mic levels automatically (i use an external mic on this camera...) many thanks, chris
there is a fundimental problem with modern LED lighting regarless of the camera you use in that the lights look different depending on the angle to the LED, a problem we never had with Gels and Tungsten other than that its fine although it is showing its age. There are newer models with better dynamic range and low light perfromance
SouthPhilly28th Yes you could although I would say that you should play to it's strengths. The power zoom, the slow shutter effect and the crisp green screen edit. I would also tend to film further away from your subject to lessen the depth of field on some takes then extreme close up using the width to your advantage. As always composition is everything :-)
+Kevin Salas low light is a weak spot of almost every Panasonic camera I have 4 different Panasonic cameras and low light sequences are really noisy sometimes
Looking forward to putting this through its paces at the Silverstone Classic this year, #4k @panasonicuk @Panasonic ruclips.net/video/wbGLisIG0M4/видео.html

How does it do in a concert with multiple lights moving around and it’s inside a building?
