Don't pay extra for this Subaru Feature - Navigation Tip

- Subaru gives you the option to upgrade to Tom Tom navigation on certain trim levels. However, there is a better option for Subaru navigation that has more capabilities and it doesn't cost any extra. Subaru Apple CarPlay and Android Auto gives you the ability to mirror your navigation from your phone up onto your Subaru's touch screen display. Depending on the year and model of your Subaru, you can connect through a data cable or wirelessly.

Not to change the subject but today I got to drive my new 2023 Impreza in the snow! I ordered the Impreza last year and it came in February. We didn't get any snow. Today I drove it for the first time in about 4-5 inches of snow and it was awesome! Didn't slide or struggle at all! Color me happy! ❤
I always look forward to at least one good snow a year! 😁
I've been driving Subaru since 1979 and I live in Buffalo. The first cars only had front wheel drive and they were great in snow. I've since purchased all wheel drive and all wheel is great as well.
Cool. Did you lease new Impreza?
@@akitkat8157 No I bought it, actually ordered it with what I wanted.
Two points to contend this. First, I like to listen to music or podcasts when I drive. On several long trips I have been streaming music through my phone and using it to navigate at the same time. During this time I got a message in my phone that it is no longer charging because it was overheating. This might not be a problem with wireless car play though. Second, I have been in rural areas where I lost cell coverage and the phone stopped navigating. Both situations I had to switch to the cars native navigation system.
I use a short black cable to connect my iPhone to a usb port in my car, and use maps for navigation. Black cable is less obvious to nosy folk looking for something to steal. Short length better than white standard cable as doesn’t get in the way. And my phone is charging as I drive.
At the very end you mention starting the navigation on Wi-Fi. This is true but you can also download offline maps to alleviate this if you new or suspected poor coverage before leaving.
That's a great point! Forgot about that
That is what I did last year before heading out on a road trip, I checked the carrier's coverage and saved those areas that didn't have service ahead of time. It worked great!
@@alexpmo for your new video ;) use Google and apple maps and HERE We Go maps (commonly used for OEM MAPS) show how to download it to your phone to use in remote locations ...
no cell service needed..
i been using it for well over 5 years and see how most users still don't know it's an option..
How do off line maps work? I have a limited data plan and this would save me the cost of adding data.
@ronpost587 basically Google maps allows you to download an offline map of an area, it usually only uses a few MB, but you will be able to navigate that area even when your phone isn't connected to a network. Also I'm pretty sure the map is saved for a year
With either Apple or Android phones you can zoom to the area you want on maps and download it (click on offline maps in the menu). You can pretty well download the entire country if you want. Just do it on wifi before you leave home and then it doesn't matter if you deviate from the route. Got that map on your phone forever more, connected or not.
Great review and timely for my daughter and son-in-law that as parents of young kids are looking to save money. Purchasing a lower trim doesn't mean you have to skip on the benefits and convenience of navigation.
Heading out for our maiden road trip tomorrow glad I found your video…yes I have subscribed 👍🏻
Thanks for the honest information! Much appreciated.
Great videos! I find it crazy that with Bluetooth tech. in use on my 2021 Outback Limited that you still have to use CarPlay is USB connection. I purchased a cheap wireless CarPlay adapter and am so pleased with the seamless, wireless connectivity now!
Thank you. I like waze better and your visual steps helped me see how to set up care play.
I have the heated steering wheel and sun roof, but cannot find the navigation app! Can you help me? Thanks-Ron
I didn’t really care about the navigation but I LOVE the heated steering wheel function on my 2023 forester.
If it was offered on my 23 Outback onyx at the time, I would have upgraded for the heated steering wheel alone. Great feature to have!
@@alexpmonice. Like your videos. Did you lease or financing your car. ?
Nice feature to have in winter 😊
I have built in Navigation in all my cars either because it was equipped that way in 2 used cars, or it was part of an option package with other features I wanted ('16 Legacy and '23 Ascent). I have never updated maps once I had to start paying for them. I use Google maps with my cars having Android Auto. In my cars without Android Auto I'll use the phone for turn by turn directions, but sometimes have the map up on the built in nav system to provide a larger overview. I find this works well for me.
Everyone doesn't have Apple phones. Sometimes when you're doing a demonstration like this, can you get a friend who has an Android to let you use it to demonstrate any differences? Thanks.
I'd venture to say that Android phones are MORE common than Apple. How about an Android video!
I set up Android Auto on my 2009 Forester which has a Sony touchscreen aftermarket radio. The Android Auto setup is intuitive and so simple, I don't even remember doing it but from what I recall, I just followed the prompts. It really brought my car up to date, it's awesome! When I'm in the car I just press a button and say "navigate to..." and she (the computer) responds verbally and sets the course just like the computer in start trek TOS. She also reads texts and asks if I want to record a response, plus there is a lot of other two way verbal communication available that I haven even begun to tap into yet. The only thing that separates my 15 year old Subaru from a new one is that it doesn't have adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, engine start/stop, and it has a manual transmission. But it does have that interesting thing where it holds the brakes until you press on the gas pedal.
Sure, a new BMW X5 or Range Rover would have multichromatic interior mood lighting and much quicker acceleration but they need that because first, you need some way to justify your $1000 payment, and second, you need to be able to get to the dealer really fast for all the repairs before they disintigrate. The old Fozz is boring and slow by comparison but at least it's still dependable.
Can you show how to use longitude latitude settings?
I like the Android Auto Google Maps. I still have a dash mounted GPS, with lifetime updates, for when we go to national parks or remote areas. I am not sure what Subaru charges for map updates but it was outrageous for my Ford and Toyotas when they needed an update.
We are getting a new Forester Wednesday. I am looking forward to trying this.
Congrats on your new Forester! 😀
Great information - thank you.
2024 Outback Limited since September. The voice command being understood is often comical and just doesn’t work well for me. Now though you have shown me how to better use it with Apple Car Play. Thanks very much. Tried the Tom Tom navigation but just didn’t like it. Still getting used to the quirks of Subaru in general but overall we really love the vehicle. Thanks again for your help in teaching us about our new Subaru.
And just last week we found out how fast the collision avoidance technology works. Though I didn’t think we had any dangerous situation happening, the vehicle thought differently and locked the brakes to avoid collisions. It was a bit embarrassing to me but it certainly worked and it was so incredibly fast.
Any idea where to buy a screen protector for the infotainment ?. Good video , thanks a lot .
Appreciate the candid information! Thank you.
Great video like always Alex. I have a 2018 Outback and never use the built-in navigation, always use Google Maps on Android Auto. I'm looking to get an aftermarket wireless Android Auto adapter and possibly a wireless charging pad/tray for my Outback. What do you recommend? For the adapter I was thinking AAWireless dongle, but don't see a wireless charging tray that would fit in the storage below the radio for the Outback on Amazon. All the charging trays on Amazon are for the Crosstrek and Forrester.
Great! This is very informative.
Alex, can you do a video on how to connect the 2023 Forester head unit to home Wifi so that it can complete the recent OTA touch screen update? Thanks!
What recent touch screen update?
The Subaru Tom Tom Nav option is expensive, but it does offer extra convenience of not having to connect your phone via a cable every time you get in the vehicle. The Wireless connection on newer Subaru's takes care of that inconvenience. You never know when you might need your Navigation for cases when you need a detour around an unexpected accident or construction work zone. Unfortunate that the only way to get a Heated Steering wheel is to also get Nav package, since once you have a heated steering wheel in cold climate areas or snow belts, you never want to go without it! Same might go for moonroof depending on person's personal preference. In summary, Nav package is expensive, but its one of those nice creature comfort options which may be worth it for some people.
I traveled for years using a Garmin then Google maps. Retired now and started using Apple Maps. The Google map is a bit easier to use but the Apple map gives more notice for upcoming turns so I have switched to Apple.
I actually bought my legacy not knowing the car didn’t have navigation. I was very upset. So I have been using Apple car play. I was not impressed. Thank you for your comments on Tom Tom. I am now happy with Apple or Google maps. Thanks again
Happy to help and glad to hear you're enjoying it now!
Good job
I know you don’t want to talk about it but you should cover the weak Subaru Windshield. This still an ongoing issues that Subaru continues to denied and thousands of owners have to paid for broken windshield.
I agree! I purchased a 2024 Subaru Forester Sport in August 2024. Within 3 days, we drove up to the mountains. A rock cracked the passenger side windshield - Chip Repair. 2 days ago, we drove up to the mountains. A rock cracks the windshield pretty sure we need to replace the windshield. The car is 7 months old. Not happy.
Hello maybe u can help me and many others i think, I have a problem on my 2021 outback android out doesnt work, i cant connect, there is a launching error : To use android auto check the vehicle settings and the android device. The application is unavailable doe to no GPS signal or system clock not being set
My wife would agree with you, she does not prefer the Tom Tom system as it has far too many failure points! on her Outback.
We had a '22 Legacy Limited that had Android Auto, but it was a pain to plug in the phone and deal with the cord. We traded that for a '23 Outback Limited which came with wireless Android Auto. I think the only time I've used the built-in nav was when I couldn't get the phone to connect (issue with my phone, not Android Auto). Plus, I play all the songs from my phone, so I don't really need XM/Sirius either.
Apple car play sounds much easier. Thank you Alex for your assistance.
Hi Alex., just started watching your informative videos down here in Oz. We have a 2021 Outback Sport, and due to its dysfunctional technology we deactivate most of it at every start, which is somewhat of a pain. We know about the auto start/stop eliminator, but do you know of any other device or a "hack" that will keep selected items of driver annoyance technology permanently OFF?
many thanks,

Using phone GPS is important to download offline maps in areas with no cell phone service. If you do this, you'll be OK. There are GPS apps that allow you to download entire states, too. Keep the great informative videos coming :)
Great tip!
I have a 2020 Limited XT Outback and I agree the Tom-Tom navigation sucks. CarPlay is the best way to go.
You can save Google maps areas you travel frequently to your phone. No worries about cell service connection ever
Alex, just put my order in for a new (2024) Legacy Limited. Drove one and fell in love with it. Can't wait to get it and do the ceramic coating thing and drive it. However, I've heard a rumor that 2024 will be the last year for the Legacy. True? I hope not as I'd rather have a sedan than a SUV.
I found android auto annoying on my phone so i went back to using the car nav and i think its pretty good on its own
Great advice. We have a 2023 Onyx 2.5, without sunroof or GPS. Great value at about $35K. Only complaint is with optional wireless charger, which heats the phone up too much.
Same here! I love it!
@@alexpmo I have some nice camping set up photos I can send you. Is it safe to share your work email? This is our families 6th Subaru. We even had a 1996 Outback.

On our new 2024 Forester Premium, it seems that the radio has to be on when using Android navigation on my wife's Google phone. We can't seem to turn off the radio portion when we want to just navigate and not have the radio on. What are we missing?? Really appreciate your videos!
I use Android Auto when connected to my phone which automatically connects to Google Maps which is in Satellite mode, so much better.
Even better!
Am hoping I can work this out as my Forester doesn't have navagation
How do you select the Service Menu on 2023 Crosstrek with large screen 11.6 in display please
Can you get the 11.6 inch touch screen display in an Outback without navigation? Great videos I always enjoy them.
Thank you! and yes, I have a 2023 Outback Onyx trim with the 11.6" display without nav. The Touring trim will come standard with the nav and all but the base trim will come standard with the 11.6" display.
Hi Alex. I have a 2023 Forester Sport. Do you know if there’s a way to turn off the flashing over speed warning on the dash. The navigation is quite out of date and quite a lot of speed limits have changed and that flashing is quite annoying.
It’s the current speed limit in the circle in the top left corner of the dash screen.
Do you know of any hidden features for a 2017 Subaru Outback PREZ. Also where is the best place for the bulky owners manual?
I have a low budget phone where I pay $26 a month. So with my current 2023 Honda Accord, I do the old fashion Garmin maps on a bean bag. Is there is a cigarette lighter for power that could be plugged in easy when I need to use the Garmin to get to a location?
Can you please show how to remove the sim card from subaru vehicles and disconnect from the net? I believe it's in the antenna but not positive.
Great content as always. Any tips about the apple car play not connecting from time to time. Restarting the car or phone doesn't solve it. I have a 24 OBW
If all your sound goes down, it may be the amplifier.
Is there a way to add Tomtom nav to a 24 crosstrek limited that didn't come with it? I hate google maps and waze and frequently drive in areas with no cell service. I'd rather use my Garmin than either of those.
I have a 22 Subaru Crosstrek Sport with the 8 inch screen and wanted to know if there's a way to view the Sirius radio stations that you're listening to while using Android Auto? I know I can still use the steering wheel controls to change the channels, but I have a lot of pre-sets and would like to see the stations that I'm listening to without going back to the radio screen.
Hi Alex. Great video thanks. I didn’t know about that feature to hold the speaker button and it will connect with Siri on my phone. I’m assuming I need to have my phone connected and apple car play running for that to work?
Yes, that’s correct. Just need to have your phone connected
Love the Android Auto in my 2024 Outback Onxy. Use it all the time and it was one of the big factors getting it because Subaru had the wireless connectivitiy to the car. I can do calling/texting and navigation all without even looking down at the screen (all from the steering wheel). I do have a question. When we did the test drive, the car we had was showing the speed limit of the road we were on on the dash (instrument panel). Is this from the built in navi tom tom system or is there some sort of phone connection that needs to be turned on? Great video and keep them coming.
I know it's from the built-in navigation system.
Do you have feedback on the Outback moonroof. Do they last the life of the car? Do they start leaking? How do I delete this from my option 8n buying an Outback Onyx?
Hi
I pick up my next new subject on 2.7.24
24 outback wilderness, ill be following
Congrats! Enjoy your new Outback! 😃
My speed limit on the dash is not the same that is on the street speed signs. Would that be because the Navigation needs to be updated?
My question is from what it looks like. The Tom tom navigation fills the screen with the navigation map. Where is with my Android Auto? It is only a small portion of the screen screen Is there a way to change that
So...can you hook up a regular GPS instead?
I have a 2019 crosstrek and I have to plug my iPhone in to the central console to connect. It’s been working on and off. iPhone 14 with iOS 17.2. What can I do to position the phone to use CarPlay
How did you set A/C buttons on the main screen?
I use Apple Maps daily and I prefer over other options.
Great tip as always! Is there a difference between trim levels in terms of cabin noise? I'm considering Outback Wilderness or Limited XT or Premier XT.
OBW owner here. It's quiet, very low road noise but the throttle dead spot is a killer to work with in the city. If you drive it like a CVT so smooth application of the throttle and slow keeping around 2k rpms between 14mph to 26mph it has a lag where you have to apply at least 40% throttle to keep a consistent acceleration and then drop back to 20% to keep a smooth forward momentum. To be honest it's very easy to exceed the OBW capabilities. It's not worth the massive MPG loss which average has been 22mpg. Tacoma's get the same and are vastly more versatile just rough.
Thanks! The 2022 model year spec sheet mentioned sound insulated front glass on the Limited XT and Touring XT (I think Touring is the US equivalent to the Premier), but now says "insulated front glass (deleted)" on the 2023 spec sheet. Regardless of that, I think you'll find that the Outback in any trim level is quiet and insulated well.
@@alexpmo Thanks for that info. As I'm getting older, I find I want more quite and smooth handling of the car. I don't know how I used to drive VW Jetta diesel when I was a young lad. 😅
@@write2nickI have had my 23 OB premier since November 22 and
I was wondering if Android Auto will ever have portrait mode option for the 2020-2022 Outbacks? Alex, what is your take? So far Google and Subaru have been blaming each other.
Likely not
Alex, A useful and informative video. We use a Garmin for two reasons. First, it has free map updates and second, it will work no matter what our cellphone service may be. We can also pack it when we fly to most anywhere and it will still work. That said, using Apple Play of Android Auto with the Subaru’s screen is an awesome idea. You have probably save thousands of people from spending money on what we too agree is a bad option of paying for the manufacture's built-in GPS.
I own a 2023 Crosstrex sport my phone is a tracfone android I paired it to the car bought a short usb cord and use Waze I’m 68 if I can do it you can too.
I use the Waze app to navigate
Why is the wifi disconnected every time my Apple Carplay is connected? I can only use my cell phone data for Carplay.
The built-in TomTom navigation is OK for routing, but horrible for showing you where you are. I do like that it downloads map updates frequently. Regardless, I almost always have Android Auto running.
Towards the end of this he mentions the cell tower availability issue. Here’s the thing: for people who live in remote areas, or who live in mountainous areas, satellite navigation is well worth the added expense.
Yeah, I know you can download offline maps, but that’s a Mickey Mouse work around.
Yep people coming to see me get lost all the time. Cell towers drop out 10 miles from my house. So they can't even call to say they are lost. Then cell phones are not free. I just use a flip phone because of no towers for smart phones. Lower cost is a stang alone gps I still have them.
Can I add Android Auto to 2018 Forester?
Is 2020 ever going to get a full screen android auto 😩
The navigation expires after a few years of owning a Subaru. Right now I get a message saying the subscription has ended; Subaru unfortunately doesn’t do anything to resolve or renew the subscription and so the message comes up every time I get in the car. Annoying.
my wrx 2022 december must be connect with caBLE :(
I have a 2020 0utback and use an android phone. Can not get a full screen for navigation only a half screen not the full screen.
I don't like either because of the lack of features compared to Garmin. My old Garmin has a REROUTE function, so if the road in front of you was blocked, you could tap Reroute and it would offer simple suggestions like a LRRLeft to get around the blockage (flood, accident, construction etc). All the other systems Gmaps, TomTom, Apple only give you choice of major route changes or keep trying to circle you back to where you are at the moment. And they.dont spell route name detour options i.e. South to I-90 OR South to Rte 9, or 16 OR 128 N to US Route 2... only a crude picture without hwy numbers so you have to guess which highway # is highlighted
Unfortunately connection to Android Auto in my outback is hit and miss. A bit dussapointed.
Now how to turn off the constant reminders that the Subaru navigation has expired. I already used apple car play most of the time, so I don’t plan to pay for extension.
I enjoy your videos very much. I have question about my 2022 Subaru Outback , maybe you can help me. When I use Wave or Google Maps, the volume is fine on my Apple phone but when I connect the phone to the Subaru, the volume is so low I can't hear it. Turning the volume up on the iPhone or the Outback doesn't help.
Turn up volume when navigation is speaking if that's what you're referring to.
Doesn't help.@@skeptical2649
LOVE my 2023 WRX, the Tom Tom Navigation is impossible to update and hopelessly outdated. Major fail.
I enjoy you RUclips videos but there are times that I need other information. Does Subaru have a phone numer that we can get other specific information on turning on or off various systems? Bill
Hi Bill! You could try 1800 Subaru 3, but you're better off calling a Subaru retailer and asking for a sales specialist. We're trained to answer detailed questions about the various settings you'll find on your Subaru.
What if you have no cell signal?
how to turn off the start stop function permanently??
On my 2023 Forester if both an iPhone and android phone are connected to the USB ports the IPhone gets priority.
This came with my 2024 Forester Limited. I tried it on a 1300 mile trip to Florida. After three stunningly inaccurate directions, I went back to Waze via Carplay. I did not expect such a severe failure of the Sirius/TomTom system. Subaru needs to remove this feature.
Cool stuff.
Side question, my 2020 Outback Premier keeps giving me notification that the system has an update but I can't get it to connect to my home Wi-Fi...I park right up to the garage and it sees the signal and connects to it, but the download just never starts...it hangs for quite a few minutes then gives an error saying it failed the download....any suggestions for that?
Unfortunately the over-the-air updates aren’t as reliable. You might have to take it to a Subaru store for the update. If you have Subaru Starlink or the warranty, it may be covered with no cost
@@alexpmo is there a way to download the update to a USB drive and then install that way?
@@sibertiger17Yes. I did it. There's information on the Subaru Outback forums. There is some risk doing it yourself, but if someone is comfortable with computers, it's really not that hard.
Just purchased an Outback 2022 and tried Android Auto but it's not full screen as shown in this video. I think my firmware version is not up to date. Can an firmware update solve the Android Auto half-screen issue ?
Yes, an update will resolve this!
Here’s one for you…my Apple Car Play shows in the apps, but unable to connect…get nothing but a Bluetooth/ wifi cable…even stumped the dealer…
I've been using Garmin navigation systems for years - through 4 different Garmin models in various cars. I find it vastly superior to the nav system built into my wife's Toyota. That system looks like an ugly, first-generation design. I use a foot-long suction cup mount on the bottom left corner of the windshield, placing the nav unit in front of the vent closest to (and barely touching) the door. I don't ever have to worry about loss of signal because the entire U.S. is already built in to the Garmin, along with locations of tons of hotels, restaurants, etc.
If you have had a Toyota or a Honda you will know what I mean when I say Tom Tom is by far the best.
My 2023 Forester came with navigation I never use it I use Google Maps or Waze.
The TomTom blows too

Anyone constantly experiences dropped voice during phone calls while using Apple Car Play on 2024 Outback ? Does anyone know how to fix their issue. While talking to someone in phone using Apple Car play, I suddenly stop hearing the other’s person voice after 10 mins or so
My 2024 Forester connects to my phone via Bluetooth.
Why you gotta go and make me mad again that I can't get my heated steering wheel without getting the sunroof and nav?
Being an Aussie my new Outback never understands my voice commands. Yes Tom Tom is very out of date here in Australia.
Have to agree really disappointed with the lack of detail that the Tom Tom displays…I expected it to be so much better
what are the benefits of the tom tom navigation?
None other than basic navigation. It's like watching black and white TV
Absolutely NONE!!
GPS Nav versus using mobile data. If you don't have a good signal, mobile data won't work. GPS is more reliable.
satellite connection vs cellular data. So if you're in a remote area, the tom tom nav is more reliable because it connects via satellite.
Thank you@@alexpmo
Austin Subaru in Austin, Texas, invites you back after a week from your purchase and you work one on one with a representative who will answer any questions you many have about the car's technology and they'll teach you how to do anything you don't understand. They even give you a $25 Visa gift card to use to compensate you for your gas and time to come to the appointment.
personally I find the Tom Tom horrible to the point that i use a Garmin stand alone GPS unit instead in my "21 XT Touring, I"d really like to uninstall the tom tom and install a Garmin system, of course I've been using Garmin since the days of having to understand lat/long coordinates so I"m somewhat biased.
I just use my Garmin.
I was happy with Tom Tom nav but disappointed when Subaru didn't offer a discount to continue after the initial 3 years. $150 per year is more than I am willing to pay for system and map updates!
I don't want or need Subaru built in navigation, sunroof or that maddening "Driver Focus" feature. Good luck trying to find an Outback Limited that doesn't have that package. Almost all of them do and special ordering takes too long. The Limited has everything I want otherwise (the thigh support extension is great). I know from my 2021 Legacy with the package I don't want it. Driver Focus is so irritating constantly nagging at you to pay attention with it's numerous false alerts (and it enables itself every time you start the car), the sunroof started rattling at six months and Tom Tom kind of sucks.
