Thank you so much for this video. I'm planning on changing the spark plugs on my gfs Kia Rio. I am by no means a mechanic wiz, but there is one thing I can recommend, and it is to clean and or vacuum or dust clean the top of the engine before taking the wires out and also before taking the spark plugs out to prevent dust and or other debris to prevent it from getting into the engine.
Great video. 2nd one I came across. The first one said nothing about spark plug gapping tools, disconnecting battery, or cylinder orders. Glad I kept looking. Thanks.
Thank you!!! Was able to replace spark plugs and ignition coils for my 2016 Kia Rio!!! Excellent video. Possible to do a video for replacing the headlight assemblies?
You do what most people don’t, name the size of socket you’ll need. I’m no mechanic. Most of the time when I attempt a project of some kind, 98% of time is figuring out what size socket or wrench to use. Thanks!
Agreed. My favorite videos lay out the tool you’ll need in the beginning including each socket size. It’s nice to have everything ready to go when you start the job rather than searching around after each step
Nice video and you explained everything and made it look simple. I just joined your channel look forward to more video in the future. Keep up the good work
This was extremely informative. Thanks for the information. Should you ever do a vid changing plugs again, could you SHOW how to tightening them to the appropriate torque? Aside from that, you were abundantly thorough.
@@JH-jd8ipNo no you dont ,and ,you should quit offering advice on something you have no idea what you are talking about! You are the guy when changing your plugs you break them getting them out because the heat from the engine made them tighter! You NEVER over tighten plugs! Using your advice may cause lots of people to do that very thing! If there isnt a torque wrench available just ere on the side of caution! They need to be more than hand tight but maybe only a 1/3 turn more!
Thanks for making this video. The check engine light on my daughter's Kia Rio came on. The code indicated it was a misfire in cylinder 4. I decided to change the ignition coil and spark plugs for all 4 cylinders at the same time. All went well on cylinders 3 and 4, however, cylinders 1 and 2 had different looking coils from 3 and 4. The coils in cylinders 1 and 2 were a little shorter and on the lower tip was a tiny spring. Additionally, I could not get access to the spark plugs in cylinders 1 and 2 because there was a funnel-like metal sleeve of some sort in the cylinders that blocked any chance of getting a socket wrench down the hole. The metal sleeve seemed permanent, at least I think so. And at the bottom of the metal sleeve, only the very tip of the spark plug that was in place could be reached. I assume that's where the tiny spring on the bottom of the ignition coil touched. Anyhow, given this, I just changed the coils and plugs in cylinders 3 and 4 and I left 1 and 2 alone. Not sure why the set-up in cylinders 1 and 2 were different. Can anyone offer insight?
Maybe the metal sleeves were the oil seals! Was there any oil around the plugs down in the hole! Was the car new when you bought it? Its possible the sleeves leaked and someone did a half ass repair so they didnt have to take the head off!
Hey, quick question what was happening that told you the spark plugs had gone bad? I have a 2014 kia rio but I don't want to spent a bunch of money on things that aren't broken
On this it was a misfire on one cylinder, but random misfires and poor acceleration can be an indication of bad plugs. You will usually get engine codes as well.
@@PhillipsVision thank you. My kia is turning over but won't actually turn "on" it stopped in the middle of me driving no warning. I'm about to buy some tools and try this
@@PhillipsVision I got a diagnostic tool and I got the code P0420 I think? So it's either my catalystic converter or the downstream censor. Wish me luck!!

They should be replaced every 100k miles according to maintenance schedule. More often for severe service.
The proper ngk plugs which are also rebranded by kia and hyndai don't need any gap adjustment. Just saying why complicate things. Not sure if gapping is even recommended for iridiums.

Lots of fake NGK plugs around. Don't buy them off of eBay sellers. I use Bosch plugs which are pre-gapped.
Need more explanation on how to remove that connector to get access to number 4. Mine does not come off easily like yours! It appears to be stuck, I've tried everything to get it off but nothing moves or works. How on earth is it supposed to come off.
@@MaryWaldroup if you removed the hex screw from the coil pack then you may just need to pry it off. It will probably get damaged so you will need a replacement coil pack.
Looks like a standard squeeze and release. Make sure to put pressure on the lock release then pull. In the video it looks like it's on the right side of the connector.
You said you torqued the plugs down...But you didn't say if you used inch pounds or foot pounds!. Alot of people think these Kia Rio's have actual spark plug wires. They use a coil type system. When I called Kia in Bowling Green Kentucky they said they are 189.00 a piece!. There is no reason to replace these unless the coil itself goes bad. They do not go bad like the typical spark plug wires in cars....P.S....Don't let any Kia dealer replace parts that are not necessary. Dealers will claim you need these coils to be replace when nothing is wrong with them, after 40 thousand miles Martin Kia said I needed to replace my serpentine belt, my brakes, my tires, engine coil, flush and drain my coolant, transmission fluid, bleed my brakes etc etc etc etc This when I had only 40 thousand miles.
the manual says you need proof you got like 400 things done at a kia dealership every 12000 miles to get your warrantee its ridiculous cheaper to buy a new rio
You are probably right on everything you said but when it comes to your timing belt go with what the factory spec says! My kia says 60k mis! Sounds low but if it slips on an interference engine you just bought an engine most of the time!
Not true, there are some really good female mechanics that know their stuff. I think women assume it’s beyond them without trying. My mom used to love to help her dad with his cars back in the 1940’s, and my 10 year old daughter takes more of an interest in helping me than my teenage son.

torque wrench
You torque the plugs the same way you torque any bolt

Hello great video.
Can you tell me what else I can do because I have fixed all issues for the codes I got and the check engine light is still on
Is it ok to use pre gap
You can, but I always double check those just to make sure
Thank you
At 131,304 miles, I wonder if it’s time

pretty easy looking
Thought the spark plugs are pre gaped?
Some say they come pre-gapped, but I always gap them because they are never 100% accurate
@@PhillipsVision Good to know thanks.
Just buy bosch pre-gapped! Ive been using them for yrs with zero issues!
Seconded. Bosch plugs are good, made in Germany. Too many Chinese-made fake NGKs around.
Would the torque be the same for 2011 Kia Rio? (15 ft lbs)
Not sure, but possibly. You may want to check the specs online for confirmation
What about the spark plug wires? Should that be changed
I got lost by 15/lb of torque he talked about when tightening the spark plugs , how do you know or measure that ? 5:22
You need tool called torque wrench, it's a wrench where you can set what torque you need, and when you reach desired torque the wrench clicks
Hey i changed mine out now its idiling alittle rough when i drive and put it in park any ideas??
How are your cables? Did you gap them properly? Slightly out of spec can cause issues.
How many miles/km when you changed the plugs?
Rory Hopkins I believe around 120k
Bro how did you remove that harness thing @2:14 ???

I'm completely stuck on that as well. I can only replace three plugs, cannot get to the fourth. The connector won't budge no way no how !!!
I'm scared to try I'll end up what should be an easy fix making it a job

ceramic insulator damaged on each spark plug, buy yourself a key torque.

You should really research things before you type things you have no idea about
exactly why shell out for a professional if the car is so cheap.
